RAPS Executive Board - Rutgers Association of Philippine Students
Game Instructions
1. Where the Wind Blows (large group)
Everyone stands in a circle with one shoe on
and one off. One person is in the middle. The
RAPS
EBOADin
2014-2015
person
the middle needs to say a sentence
of something that can apply to a lot of people. For example, “The wind blows on people
who are wearing socks.”
 If the person’s statement applies to you, you
must move (wearing only one shoe) from your
spot and claim a different spot (with different
shoes). Try to go to a spot that’s not near you!
 The person in the middle will try to move and
get a spot. If you run out of spots, it’s your turn
to be in the middle.
 Repeat until everyone has had a turn.

Our Mission Statement
To unite the Filipino students within the Rutgers community by
establishing solidarity on the basis of a common heritage, to
educate the Rutgers community on various aspects of the Philippine
culture, to provide information of socioeconomic and political
conditions in the Philippines, and to offer services and programs that
will be beneficial to Filipinos both within and outside the
Rutgers community.
Letter from the Editor
Dear You,
Welcome to Rutgers Association of Philippine Students
(RAPS)! Whether you are a returning member or a new one, we are
very happy that you’re here. We hope that through RAPS, you can
meet new friends and create long lasting memories.
Tonight’s Fall Fiesta is a celebration of Filipino culture, from
the yummy food to the Tinikling performances. Don’t worry though,
you don’t need to be Filipino to join our organization or perform in
our subgroups (which you can read about later in this issue).
If you have any questions, please contact me
or any of our executive board members.
Enjoy your night!

2. Bring Me (small groups)
 Split into teams. Assign who will bring
the item to the game host.
 The host will say “Bring me _______”
which will be a certain, specific item.
 The first team to bring that item wins the
point.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY!

Letter from the President
Dear RAPS,
Welcome to the Rutgers Association of Philippine Students’
General Interest Meeting! This is a celebration of reuniting with old
and current members and welcoming fresh faces into our family.
Being a commuter for most of my college career, RAPS gave
meRAPS
a reason
to 2014-2015
stay on the Rutgers campus. Whether if it was to
EBOAD
attend meetings or hang out with friends, RAPS became my home
away from home. I met people that I can call my best friends today.
This organization offers so many opportunities and interest
groups from modern dance and cultural dance to photography
and graphic design. It was through the RAPS Cultural Dance
Troupe where I really felt the family vibe and wanted to become
more involved in the organization. It was because of the way RAPS
has helped me grow that I decided to become a leader in the
Phil-Am community.
Thank you for choosing to come to the RAPS GIM and
learning more about this organization that I like to call my family.
I hope you have a great time tonight and the
rest of the year. I look forward to meeting you
and welcoming you into the RAPS family!
Sincerely,
Earl Louis Santos
President of RAPS

Tagalog Time!
The word
“Kuya”
came from two Chinese terms:
"ko" to signify elder brother, and "a" as a word
modifier that denotes kinship. For females,
"Ate"
means older sister. In Chinese, the “ko” is replaced
with “chi” and the “a” is added, thereby making it
“achi” or “atse.” Thus, what we believe to be honorific
Tagalog kinship titles is actually derived from Chinese.
-philippineforum.net
With RAPS’ Big/Little Program, you can get
your very own “Ate”, “Kuya”, or “Bunso”! No
shared DNA needed. This mentoring program
is designed to provide underclassmen with a
positive role model that will help them
navigate through the trials of college life. Ask
an e-board member for more details!

RAPS Recap
Here’s a look at our past events!
This fall semester, the Graphics Coordinator (Allison Templo) and
the Webmaster (Caitlin Torres) have teamed up to form a new
subgroup, RAID. Our mission statement is to unite not only artists
RAPS EBOAD 2014-2015
and programmers, but also members who are interested in
design, art, and/or computer science. We want to encourage
members to engage in both the visual and technical aspects
of art as a way to express themselves in the community. Our
goal as a subgroup is to finally give underrepresented, talented
individuals within the organization a chance at the spotlight
whose medium of expression is through coding or through a
pencil of some sort. We will arrange a time and location for
meetings once we have find a convenient time for those
interested. Again, you do not need to know how to code,
draw, or design – as long as you have a desire to learn, join us!

Underclassmen
Representatives
The Underclassmen Representatives
program is a great opportunity to
shadow RAPS’ executive board,
offering extraordinary insight into the
inner workings of a well-established
organization. As a UR, you will be
required to attend a certain amount
of general body meetings and major
events. You will be assigned a variety
of tasks and projects to cultivate
leadership and teamwork within the sophomore and freshman classes.
Becoming a UR is a fabulous segue for those interested in joining RAPS’
executive board in the future! The application and interview process will
be discussed in upcoming meetings. If you have any further questions,
feel free to contact any executive board member.

RAPS Dance Troupe
Walk into an RDT
practice and upon
first glance something strikes you. The
infectious laughter and energy is
undeniable. Dancers, movers, and
music enthusiasts of all different ethnic
backgrounds, colleges, and ages
come together unexpectedly. The
silence is deafening as the team
listens intently on the notes and
instructions given but is broken again
by a burst of laughter. This family of
dancers works hard to grow and promote the art of dance and entertain
audiences in varying arenas. From shows for different RU organizations to
urban dance competitions and even retail promotions, RDT pushes itself
to take on new challenges. RDT offers extensive and challenging dance
training for its members as well as lessons applicable to other areas of life.
Amped and motivated with a few placements under their belt, RDT
hopes to present entertaining sets in the upcoming competition season.
RAPS Cultural Dance Troupe
Hello RAPS members!
RCDT stands for Raps Cultural Dance
Troupe and we are a group of
students who perform Filipino
traditional dance. We’ve performed
at many RAPS events such as Battle of
the Barrios and Barrio Fiesta. We usually
meet on Sunday and Thursday nights.
No dancing experience is needed! The
RCDT Coordinators for the 2015-2016 school year are Alexa Budhi and
Matthew Reyes! Please feel free to add them on Facebook and
message them for questions, or more information about RCDT.

RAPS Acoustic Group of Singers
RAPS Acoustic Group of
Singers, or RAGS for short, is a
place for singers, songwriters
and musicians to get
together and do something
RAPS EBOAD 2014-2015
they love. RAGS members
have a passion for music.
Our meetings consist of
relaxed jam sessions. We occasionally perform at RAPS events,
open mics, and coffee houses. RAGS is a family, and if you love
music, we'd love to have you. RAGS meets on Mondays at
Hardenbergh Hall A3 (College Ave). at 9PM. Follow us on
Instagram @RutgersRAGS.
RAPS Sports
RAPS Sports focuses on offering
our organization the opportunity
to take part within the Rutgers
Intramurals League and other
sporting events. We compete in
sports such as flag football,
soccer, volleyball, and
basketball, often representing
RAPS at St. Peter’s D3 Leagues.
The only requirement to join is
that you have to be a current Rutgers New Brunswick Student and an
active member within the RAPS community. We hope to see RAPS
Sports continue to grow from it’s previous years accomplishments, and
to gain a bigger crowd to support our members playing on the field
and on the courts. We invite you all to come try out a new sport and
become part of one of our sports teams. Within this group you will be
sure to gain a sense of brotherhood/sisterhood with your teammates,
and create stronger bonds with those with whom you will share the
fields and courts with.
