T
he history of the
United States is but
a heartbeat in comparison to
Sitka’s history. The Kiksadi clan
of Tlingít Indians lived in and
around Sitka centuries before
Russians or Americans ever set
foot on the island’s rocky shores.
In fact, the name “Sitka” comes
from the Tlingít name for this
place: Sheet’ka, meaning “the
land behind the little islands”.
The Tlingit people thrived
undisturbed on their paradise
island until 1799 when Alexander Baranov, manager of the Russian-American Company, established a
fort a few miles north of present day Sitka. The Tlingít grew hostile, understanding that submission to
the Russians meant allegiance to the Tzar and slave labor to the fur trade company. Their suspicions
culminated into violence, when in 1802 the Tlingít attacked and destroyed the Russian outpost.
Two years later Baranov retaliated, and the epic Battle of 1804 commenced. For several days, the island
Natives fought to retain control of their ancestral homeland. In the end, the Tlingít were outgunned and
retreated silently. The Russians created a new empire called New Archangel, built in the same footprint as
today’s downtown shopping area. The fur-trade flourished, the powerhouse Russian-American Company
became the most profitable fur trader in the world, and Sitka became the premiere destination on the
West Coast, earning it the nickname “Paris of the Pacific”.
By mid-century, overhunting had diminished sea otters to near extinction, and the Russians’ interest
in the new world went with it. Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million with a transfer
ceremony that took
place in Sitka on
October 18, 1867.
Today, the Alaska
Day Festival
commemorates
the formal transfer
of Alaska to the
United States.
Each October,
Alaskans and
visitors congregate
at Castle Hill,
where remnants of
Russia’s rule lend an
air of authenticity
to the reenactment
of the transfer.

O
ne of Sitka’s strongest distinguishing
features is the cultural fusion of the Tlingít
intermingled with Russian American influences.
This robust duality emanates from the local
galleries, art, downtown architecture, dance
performances, and local museums.
The Tlingít have lived continuously in Sitka for
over 50 centuries. Discover age-old stories of
the Tlingít people at Sitka National Historical
Park (known as “Totem Park” by locals) and the
adjacent Sitka Cultural Center. Here, totems
carved by the masterful hands of Tlingit and
Haida Indians can be seen along a pathway that
meanders through the rainforest.
The Naa Kahídi Dancers include Tlingít
performers both young and old. Together,
they maintain the ancient art of storytelling
through traditional dance. Performances are
held throughout the summer in the Sheet’ka
Kwaán Naa Kahídi, built in the style of a
Tlingít clan house. Intricate regalia and dramatic
movement delight audiences who come to hear
and see songs and dances passed on from one
generation to the next.
Sitka was the cultural and political hub of
Russian America in the early 19th century. While San Francisco was only a sleepy cow town, Sitka’s
opulence had already earned it the distinction as the “Paris of the Pacific”. A casual downtown
stroll will reveal such gems as St. Michaels Cathedral, an active Russian Orthodox Church whose
onion-shaped domes have graced Sitka’s skyline for nearly two centuries.
The New Archangel Dancers take their
name from Sitka’s century-old designation
as the capital of Russian America. The
all-female troupe preserves this heritage
throughout the summer by delivering
spirited dance renditions that represent the
cultures of Russia and surrounding areas.
From the vibrant floral prints of Russia, to
the plaids and braids of the Ukraine, to
the Georgian gowns and earth tones of
Armenian folk wear, the dancers’ costumes
lend both color and authenticity to
remarkable entertainment.

itka is an angler’s paradise. Our proximity to the open ocean provides a
steady supply of fish, yet the islands and bays create sheltered waters and
ideal fishing conditions. Sitka boasts the highest saltwater sport fishing catch rate
for King Salmon in the State. Book a fishing charter and join an experienced
captain on an Alaskan fishing adventure of a lifetime. Salmon, halibut, lingcod,
and rockfish can all be caught on the same day, from the same boat.
Love fly fishing? Join a freshwater guide, and feel the thrill of fishing in
untouched rivers and streams under towering spruce and hemlock trees. Salmon,
trout, char, and steelhead all thrive in Sitka’s fresh waters.
For those who enjoy
competitive fishing, the
annual Sitka Salmon Derby is sure to please.
On Memorial Day Weekend, the derby awards
thousands of dollars in cash and prizes to
contending fishermen.
Fish in Sitka, and experience first-hand what
legends are made of!

Wildlife abounds in Sitka!
O
cean-going charters and tours provide the opportunity to
experience one of the world’s most incredible assemblies
of marine wildlife: humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals, sea
otters, and teeming seabird rookeries. The ancient Sitka spruce and
hemlock rainforest that dominates Baranof Island provides cover
for abundant wildlife year-round, including the brown bear and
Sitka black-tailed deer.
Although whales can often be seen year round by boat,
they practically park themselves in front of Sitka’s harbor
during the spring herring spawn and the autumn
migration. View these gentle giants of the Pacific
from Whale Park:: a high overlook located just
six miles from downtown. In early November the
Sitka WhaleFest celebrates Sitka’s marine life with
special activities and information seminars from renowned marine biologists. Visitors can also view aquatic
wildlife and a salmon hatchery at the Sitka Sound Science Center where special displays and touch-tanks
offer a remarkable hands-on experience.
The Alaska Raptor Center offers close-up encounters with
bald eagles and other birds of prey. The center provides
medical rehabilitation to injured or sick birds of prey,
including bald eagles. Every effort is made to return
these majestic creatures back into the wild; however,
some never recover fully and remain housed at the
center as part of its educational program.
The Fortress of the Bear is a non-profit education
and rescue center with two separate naturalized
habitats for orphaned Brown Bear cubs, complete
with covered viewing areas. Guests have the
opportunity to view resident cubs and learn more
about Southeast Alaska Brown Bears and the heartwarming mission of the organization.

or those longing to experience true wilderness,
look no further! An exceptionally developed
hiking trail system allows exploration among towering
trees that dip into watery estuaries and rise into alpine
meadows. Tours to remote locations allow visitors the
opportunity to explore the landscape on bicycle, car
or all-terrain vehicle.
The quiet channels and coves of Alaska’s Inside Passage
beckon irresistibly, and most visitors – sooner or later –
find themselves drawn to the water. Sitka Sound is well
known for world class sea kayaking, ocean rafting,
diving, snorkeling and underwater exploration
adventures. Sitka’s marine environment is a photographer’s
dream – breathtaking beauty can be found in coastal tidal
pools, abundant wildlife and spectacular Alaskan scenery.
One of the most memorable ways to take in the wild
beauty of Sitka and surrounding areas is by Seaplane.
These tours offer a bird’s eye view of fantastic geological
wonders: the brilliance of the Baranof Ice Fields, the
pristine solitude of an alpine lake, and the gaping crater
of Mt. Edgecumbe Volcano.
Crazy about golf? Then don’t leave without testing your
golfing skills in wild Alaska on a 9-hole course with an
unforgettable view.

here’s
something
deeply inspirational
about Sitka. Whether it’s the
mind bending vistas, clean
air, laid back lifestyle or the
small town friendliness of
the locals – people find that
spending time here feeds
the soul and heightens the
senses. Perhaps that’s why a
surprisingly large number of
artists, musicians, writers, and
theatrical performers live in
Sitka or come back to visit time
and time again.
Art in Sitka began with the
first people. Abundant food
sources and a mild climate allowed the Tlingit to develop highly intricate and stylized art forms. Today,
Sitka’s native artisans are still second to none, with world-class wood carvers, basket weavers, silver
carvers, and traditional robe weavers.
When Sitka was the capitol of Russian America during the 1800s, it became famous for high society
culture, earning it the nickname “Paris of the Pacific”. Sitka purportedly had the first opera house, piano, and
theater on the west coast. Today, fine arts are still thriving in the middle of Alaskan wilderness. The annual
Sitka Summer Music Festival provides world-class chamber music. The festival just celebrated its 40th
anniversary, and has been used as a model for chamber music festivals all over the country.
The Sitka Fine Arts Camp is a nationally acclaimed program that
provides artistic development for youth K-12 in visual arts, music,
dance, theater, writing, and Alaska Native arts. The camp has been
named one of the top ten in the country by the National Endowment
for the Arts. Nightly “Art Shares” by students and faculty highlight the
program to the public.
Whale Fest, Sitka ArtiGras, HomeSkillet Fest, and the Sitka
Monthly Grind are all newer art events that are quickly gaining
notoriety in Sitka and throughout the Southeast Alaska region.
New for 2012: Alaska Arts Southeast recently took ownership of
the former Sheldon Jackson College Campus, a National Historic
Landmark. As a result, they have transformed the campus into a
multidisciplinary arts education campus. The new Sitka Festival
of Arts, Humanities and Natural Sciences is slated to launch in
the summer of 2012.
