Redfish Lodge is THE Place in Texas for Redfish and Trout

W
e returned from Redfish
Lodge on Copano Bay in
Rockport, Texas, in midNovember. Sure, you can catch fish at
a lot of places and with a lot of guides
in the Rockport area. But, if you want
an A+ luxury lodge, with gourmet food
cooked by an A+ Vietnamese cook
(who has a wife preparing incomparable desserts), guides who are uniformly
excellent, first class equipment from
the boats to the rods and lures, a Lodge
with a pool table, a shotgun shooting
course at the end of the peninsula upon
which the Lodge is located, tennis
courts, and a swimming pool, tell me
where you can get these amenities
other than Redfish Lodge— there is no
other comparable place close by.
My wife, Gena, and I went with James
Florez and his fiance, Heidi, on November 12 - 14, 2008. It was a wonderful, memorable trip. I have a scar to
prove it. We used spinning reels all of
the time and the constant pulling back
the line from the spinning reel and
holding it with the right first finger
while casting finally produced a cut
that did not go away for weeks. What

does that tell you? It tells you that we
were casting a lot but not much more
than that. I can tell you the “more”.
The "more" is that we consistently got
our limits of trout and redfish. When
we got our limits we retired for the day
but my Purple Heart finger tells me that
we were casting a lot, and having a lot
of fun—which we did. I recommend
this trip to anyone. You cannot get a
better redfish and trout fishing trip
than this with an A+ lodge and A+ people.

critters. On the other side of the Lodge
is a 500’ lighted pier with underwater
green lights. The Lodge provides all
the rods and some tackle for these
night-time adventures.
If you want to flyfish, no prolem. Just
let the Lodge know ahead of time and
they will provide a guide who specializes in flyfishing and a specially
equipped boat. A fast action 8 to 10
weight rod will handle the job.
All fish are cleaned and frozen and
placed in complimentary bright yellow
coolers for your trip home. The Lodge
has a large store on premises for buying
shirts, hats, sunscreen and similar
items. If you want to have a really special trip with eight family members or
friends you can rent the Ruddy Lodge,
a 3600 sq. ft. lodge that will handle up
to eight guests. It is separate from the
main Lodge, reserved for those wanting
privacy and it operates independently
from the Lodge having its own chef
and food and service staff.

Our guide was Brian Holden, guide par
excellance and also the Lodge Manager. He really knows the surrounding
bays and the best places to fish, although all the Lodge guides cooperate
on the radio to help each other find the
fish. We caught trout and redfish, of
course, but also more than our fair
share of sheepshead and one flounder. Other boats caught flounder, a
small ray and a red snapper. It is even
possible to catch a shark or two. We
used exclusively live shad for bait. All
boats were 21’ to 24’ shallow draft
boats and we rarely fished in water
over six feet deep. Lunch is provided
in the boats, and a typical day is 5-8
hours on the water.
Returning to the Lodge does not mean
that you have to quit fishing. There is a
beach on one side with four sets of stadium lights for those wanting to fish

HUNTING IS MY GAME
A
fter my retirement as a consulting engineer (civil) in 2002, I
have accelerated my hunting
activities. My wife, Janis, accompanies me on many of the major trips
and when she can’t go, I somehow manage
to keep in her good graces with a cruise or
a nice trip abroad.

Actually I began hunting at an early age
with my Dad (rabbits, squirrels, etc.). By
high school I had progressed up to whitetail
deer (still my favorite). Hunting slowed
down in college (studies and girls) and in
my early career years (work, marriage,
kids), but I did manage to have a deer lease
in Mason County in the late 60s. During
this period when the kids were small the
entire family would go to the hunting lease
once or twice a season.

built a 7-acre lake and small house. This
was a great family retreat but with limited
hunting opportunities. Later in 1987 we
purchased a ranch in Lampasas County
near Adamsville on the Lampasas River.
There was fishing in the river and great
deer hunting. Enough said— I was a
“happy camper”!
With the purchase of “Rancho Venado”,
hunting activities picked up; I didn’t realize
I had so many relatives and friends when
fall hunting season began! Each fall I was
hunting 6 or 7 weekends at the ranch but
still found time for other hunting ventures
which continues to this day. In addition to
Texas, I have hunted New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and
Nebraska.
By 1990 most of my lifelong hunting buddies’ interest in hunting had waned. This
was when I joined the Dallas Woods &
Waters Club to meet other sportsmen with
my interests and to learn of more hunting
opportunities—great move!

South Africa, an elk hunt in New Mexico
and, of course, our Texas deer season.
I am now looking forward to a Texas
Spring turkey hunt, have booked a mule
deer hunt in the sand hills of Nebraska for
this fall and a whitetail hunt in Saskatchewan for November 2010, and have an eye
on several of the 2009 fundraiser trips.

consulting engineering firm and for the
next 4 or 5 years worked night and day to

This trip proved to be the crown jewel of

best-known black bass fishing guides on Lake
Fork. See his website (www.bassfishing.org)
where you can view some of the monsters he
has boated. He has been guiding professionally
on Lake Fork for 15 years and he specializes in
finding trophy bass. He is already booking trips

ELK RESCUE IN NEVADA
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- It's not all
checking hunting and fishing licenses. Sometimes the issues are
bigger. Like when a Nevada game

elk that locked horns while sparring

Rough Creek Repast
Dinner was a fantastic, gastronomic
experience. One should consider going
to Rough Creek for the dining alone as
it has consistently been named one of
the best places to dine in all of the
country! Everyone was billed individually so as not to confuse tabs at the end
of the dinner, making for a pleasant and
as economically-friendly dining experience as each individual chose to have.

On Sunday, January 25, 2009, the Dallas Woods and Waters Activities Committee hosted its first dinner to Rough
Creek Lodge and Resort in Glen Rose,
TX. Eighteen attendees met in Preston
Center where they boarded a luxury bus
