Welcome to our 20th Birthday Party!
Over 20 years, 200,000 young Canadians have been impacted by
DAREarts’ all-the-arts programs that ‘DARE’ them to unlock their
potential with Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence. Now
in high school and beyond, many DAREarts graduates are tackling life
challenges and leading their peers to do the same.
Tonight, we support several of these young people with scholarships.
Be inspired by their stories and determination to succeed!
Tonight, we also celebrate The Honourable Murray Sinclair for his
leadership that is cultivating culture for our Canadian Indigenous youth
by encouraging us all to listen as they find their voice.
With your help, we can ‘DARE’ even more young people to find the
confidence, courage and leadership skills that will lead them to ignite
change in their lives and in their communities.

The Honourable
Murray Sinclair
As chair of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation
Commission, Murray Sinclair assembled recommendations for
Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians to move forward together.
Presented in 2015, the Commission informs all Canadians about what
happened in Indian Residential Schools with accounts of survivors,
families and communities affected by the experience.
He also supported a new ballet by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet called
Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation. It explores learning to
accept each other’s burdens as we walk through the past and toward the
future. Together, we learn that without truth, there is no reconciliation.

Event Chair
Murray Sinclair was Manitoba’s first Aboriginal judge and the second
Aboriginal judge in Canada. Early in his career, he led significant changes
in pediatric cardiac surgery and medical error in Canada. He was recently
appointed to the Canadian Senate.
He has received a National Aboriginal Achievement Award in addition
to many community service awards and eight honourary degrees. His
Ojibway name is Mizanay Gheezhik, meaning “the One Who Speaks of
Pictures in the Sky.”
The DAREarts Cultural Award
The DAREarts Cultural Award is presented annually to an individual who has led
the way in cultivating culture for Canadian youth. The medallion was created by
internationally acclaimed sculptor, the late Dora dePédery-Hunt, O.C, O.Ont,
and Andrew Kuntz singularly creates each glass sculpture to hold the medallion.

My community is Kingston and Midland, or KNM. It’s nice I guess unless
you’re hanging around the bad part. My school is R.H. King Collegiate and
I am in Grade 12.
My cultural heritage is Portuguese and African. I prefer African American
or light skin. I’ve had a rough life for the most part: I didn’t have much and
I had to do things for myself but I love my mom and my dad.
My passion is my friends, they mean a lot to me; shout out to Destiny,
Tyler, Jayde, and Meah. My long term goal is to have a child and be the
best father ever.
At DAREarts, I realized I had a choice in how I acted and a responsibility
to be my best self. I started practicing the skills of Discipline, Action,
Responsibility, and Excellence. DAREarts has helped me make friends,
helped me find myself and smile.

communities, at a grassroots level.

My community is Serpent River First Nation and I was born in Toronto
and now live in Pickering Ontario. The school that I go to is Pickering
High. I’m in grade 10. My family has seven people: Joe is my step dad,
Jocelyne Pelletier is my mother, Ayden, Jake and Gage are my brothers,
Rielle is my sister. My heritage is native and Filipino. What I do is dance a
native dance. I have a regalia; it’s not a costume! I eat Native foods.
My passion is to make sure that DAREarts is within me all day every day. I
will make sure that DARE will help me succeed in life. My long-term goals
are to get my G1 on my birthday and finish grade 11 and 12 with my high
school diploma so I can be a lawyer or a police officer.
DAREarts has helped me change my life because I used to be a bully and
they helped me change my way. I now have amazing friends. I used part
of DARE to make my friends: I use R for respect because with respect you
will get respect back so that is how DARE helps me.

My community is Bendale close to the Rouge Valley. It is very family
oriented community. I am in grade 10 and attending Delphi Secondary
Alternative School. My family is made up of my brother Terran, my
mother Nardina Grande and myself. I am Italian. Italians love to cook
food. As a part of my culture, we come together and celebrate various
religious holidays.

Cats, horses, dogs, I really love them all. I feel like I have a special
connection to them. I want to work with them when I am older. As for
other long term goals, I really want to write novels or songs that would
give others a special message of hope or just to help them get over
whatever problems they are going through at the moment. I really want
to make a difference in the world, even if it starts small.

Lukic
I am a grade 12 art major at the Etobicoke School of the Arts. I was born
in Belgrade, Serbia. My parents Dusan Lukic and Sandra Milovanovic
were divorced when I was three. My mom and I lived with her parents
for several years. She married my step father, Aleksandar Jovanovic
when I was in grade 2. My brother Bogdan was born in 2007. We moved
to Canada in 2009. I started the DAREarts program in grade 6 that
same year and graduated from the program in grade 8. I continued my
involvement through volunteering and taking part in the Shakespeare
Camp last summer.
My long term goal is to become an artist (painter/photographer) and an
actor. My current goal is to get an undergraduate degree in either Visual
or Performing Arts.

DAREarts has helped me in every aspect of my life. It gave me the
discipline to excel in what I do. Without DAREarts, I would not have had
the courage to follow my passion for the arts. Without DAREarts I would
not have been able to take responsibility for myself and my well-being.
I would have continued on a path to depression, self-harm and suicide.
DAREarts taught me that I can control my life and that I can take action
to change it for the better. I will forever be grateful.

First Roots Indigenous Program
We are at a critical time in Canada where our Indigenous children must
be given equal opportunity to succeed. For 8 years, DAREarts teams
of artists and educators have been flying into remote Indigenous
communities and working alongside schools and elders as the youths
build their confidence and courage to combat isolation, poverty and
marginalization.

I am 14 years old from Webequie First Nation. I go to high school called
Simon Jacob Memorial Education Centre, grade 9, in my community. I
have two younger siblings: Tanner who is 12 and Eve who is 6. My parents
are Tim and Angela Sofea. I’m close to my dad’s parents, Irene and Enias.
They teach me a lot of things. I only have uncles and many relatives and
cousins here in Webequie. Our culture and language is Ojicree.
My passion is hockey. It’s been my passion since I was 10 years old. I
remember being there practising my skating, shooting and braking; it
took so long, but I got it. I love to play. I would be out till late in the nights,
even after the lights go out. My long term goal is finish high school and
go to college or university and hopefully go play on a women’s team. I
like being active and competitive. I love playing.
DAREarts has helped me with my life challenges by helping me use my
voice and be confident in my ideas and goals. I really enjoy working with
DAREarts staff.
Chief Cornelius Wabasse of Webequie FN explains,
“We have our fair share of social problems here but the
DAREarts program really seems to work with our students…
They want to come to school as a result.”
DAREarts has been invited to other FNMI communities
— but we need your help to get there.

The Paul Semple Scholarship Fund
DAREarts has partnered with family, friends and
colleagues of the late Paul Semple, past Chair of
DAREarts and COO of Noront Resources, to create
the Paul Semple Scholarship Fund. The fund
currently stands at $35,000 and continues to grow.
A first-time $2,000 scholarship will be presented
to Laurentian MSc student, Nicole Valiquette.
Her research in environmental microbiology will
lead to innovative treatment of mining waste. An
equivalent award will support DAREarts programs.
The Crichton Community Leadership
Scholarship
With his family’s annual donation, DAREarts
honours John A. F. Crichton as a Community
Champion of young people reaching for their
potential, whatever their own passion.
The scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded annually
to a DAREarts graduate who has demonstrated
generosity of spirit towards their peers and a
need for funds to further their post-secondary
education.
The Bill Stevenson Writing Award
The late author, William Stevenson, was a
DAREarts Champion Mentor. An annual award that
honours his memory continues DAREarts’ work of
encouraging the art of writing in our children.
He once said,
“Having observed the incredible effect this
organization has had on the children, I cannot laud
enough the value it gives to our society.”

The Patina Prize
With his family’s annual donation, DAREarts
honours its past Chair, the late Richard Patina’s
commitment to DAREarts empowering young
Canadians to ignite change. The Patina Prize
supports DAREarts in Nova Scotia, Ontario, British
Columbia and First Nations. The final $1,000 helps
a DAREarts graduate with their post-secondary
education, presented this year to Dante:
Dante Royale-Scholar
Dante Royale-Scholar, 17, is at Central Tech High
School, Toronto, and will attend Humber College
next year for pre-law; but often, he cannot afford
bus tickets to school. He loves sports and mentors
younger DAREarts kids. This scholarship will bring
him one step closer to becoming a lawyer. “I want
to do pro bono work and help the community.”
“When I started DAREarts in grade 6, I had no idea that it would be the
thing to save me from trouble at school. I learned how to control my anger
because DAREarts taught me about: self-discipline; non-violent ways of
taking action; the responsibility I had to respect myself and others; and, that
I too, was excellent. Instead of feeling bad about being different, I learned
not following and being like others actually makes me a better leader.”
The Headwaters Arts Award
Headwaters Arts in the rural Caledon and
Dufferin County, has partnered with DAREarts
to encourage innovative arts education through
DAREarts. This year’s winner is DAREarts grad,
Holly Newport. “I will use the funds to invest in
continuing my education at OCADU and further
expand my knowledge of production, photography
and how to successfully run my own business.”

summer, she spent 3 weeks performing in Italy.

The JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band is an auditionbased, free-to join, professional level ensemble
for students. Over 10 years, the band has shared
the stage with such jazz luminaries as Al Jarreau
and Guido Basso. Alumni have gone on to the Berklee College of Music,
Brubeck Institute, Humber College, McGill U., New England Conservatory
and U of T’s Faculty of Music.
