Happy spring to all in
Tonganoxie School District!

As the weather begins to warm
up, everyone, not just students,
begins to think about the longer,
more relaxed days of summer.
But before we all head off to
little league baseball games and
cookouts, it’s worth reflecting on
the school year behind us.
This has been a great year for USD
464. Our teachers and education
professionals have put in countless
hours toward ensuring that our
students are well prepared for
their next steps, whether that be
moving on to middle school or their
college and professional careers.
Their focus on ensuring that our
students are learning helps make
this district great and I, along with
my fellow school board members,
cannot thank them enough. As the
parent of two USD 464 alumni, I
can attest to the fact that we have
in our schools truly dedicated
educators.
This time of year is also a great time
to think about new beginnings.

Commencement is approaching
and another group of students will
walk across the stage to begin the
next phase of their lives. I wish
all of them well and hope they
continue to embody excellence in
all that they do.
I also want to wish the new and
returning board members the best
as they continue to strive and
transform our academic programs
to better prepare our students
whether they choose to continue
learning or begin a career. We have
accomplished so much over the
past few years and I trust that the
board will continue to emphasize
educational excellence in the future
as we move forward. I am amazed
at the tremendous leadership we
have with our superintendent and
principals as they lead our staff
in implementing new goals and
developing professional learning
communities within the district.
As my last meeting nears and I
reflect upon my eight years on the
board, I would be remiss if I didn’t
thank the staff, the volunteers, the
students, the patrons for all the
wonderful energy and enthusiasm
they bring to our district. It has
been my honor and my privilege to
serve a wonderful community.

This School Year is quickly coming to
an end.....Summer will be here and
gone before any of know it. GREAT
things are in store for many of us.
Next Year will be special to many
and in many ways. Tonganoxie
School Dist. will have a BRAND NEW
Elementary School.....YEAH! It was a
long time coming. The Elementary
win increase by one grades, Fifth.
This means more Students, more
Teachers and more WORK. What
a great opportunity to those of you
who are looking for something to do
in your spare time. What better place
than in the New Building. It is so
much fun helping the teachers with
their project, which more importantly,
it helps our students learn. It is also
very rewarding to see the happy faces
on the Students faces walking in the
halls, playing in the New Gym, and
singing their hearts out in the Music
Class. Getting Books from the Library
and their very own book at RIF.
The POPCORN IS A PLUS!!!
This will be a very special time to
come and enjoy volunteering for the
Tonganoxie school district. Please

2 Now Accepting Applications for Early Childhood Peer
Models for the 2015-2016 School Year!

Peer Model students are typically developing children who reside in the Tonganoxie or
Basehor‐ Linwood School District boundaries and are included in our preschool classrooms
for children with disabilities. All children benefit from multiple opportunities to interact with
their peers, and learn appropriate social behavior and play skills from one another.
Currently we have 2- and 4-day programs at Basehor Elementary and Tonganoxie
Elementary. We have a 2- and 3-day program at Linwood Elementary.
A peer model student must go through a developmental screening to ensure they
demonstrate age‐appropriate skills in the areas of play, social, behavior, speech, language,
and motor. Additionally, all peers must speak fluent English and be toilet‐trained.

The Elementary
PTC put on the
Spring Sock Hop!
TES staff
and students
participated in an
awareness day for
4p-/Wolf-Hirschorn
Syndrome
Last Friday, April 24th, the
Elementary PTC put on the spring
sock hop! It was a fun night of
dancing, hula hooping, snacking
and just enjoying hanging out
with friends.
The PTC has
sponsored this event for the past
several years to bring kids and
families together for an evening
of fun and entertainment. Food
items are also collected for the
Good Shepard food pantry.
Thank you for supporting the PTC
throughout the year!■

in Seattle over Spring break. Diane
was selected as Kansas Health
Teacher of the year in 2013-14
and Central District SHAPE America
Health Teacher of the Year. She
presented on a variety of Health
topics for teaching Elementary
Health along with the Secondary
Health Archers of the Year. ■
Miss Sandhoefner’s second graders
have been learning about plants,
animals, life cycles, and habitats in
science. For a writing project they
each chose an animal they wanted
to read and learn about. While
discussing their project a student
suggested they read their reports
to the kindergartners. This created
an audience for the second graders
which in turn created motivation
and a lot of hard work.
To begin their writing project second
graders read their non-fiction animal
books. As they read they used
alphaboxes to write down
important key words they wanted to
share with their audience. Then they
were able to use these key words
to write fact sentences about their
chosen animal.
The second graders have shared
their reports with Miss McCandless’s
kindergarteners (pictured). They
plan to share their stories with
Miss Nicholson’s and Mrs. Smith’s
kindergarteners. ■

TES 4th Graders
finally learned the
answer to the age
old question “Why
do we have to learn
all of this stuff
anyway?”.
TES 4th Graders finally learned
the answer to the age old question
“Why do we have to learn all of
this stuff anyway?”. On Friday,
April 10th more than 40 parents,
friends and community members
came to school for the 1st
Annual TES Career Fair. These
amazing
volunteers talked
to 4th Graders about their jobs
and explained how what the
students are learning in school
now will prepare them for these
jobs in the future. Students were
able to interview a newspaper
reporter, a KBI Special Agent,
and Archaeologist, a Dental
Assistant, a court reporter
and many, many more! It
was especially fun to see the
excitement on the kids faces
as they got to talk to someone
who they wanted to be just like
when they grow up. Now the
students will begin a Career
Research Project in which they
will continue learning about their
favorite profession and create
either a brochure or an essay
to show what they learned.
The students will then get to
dress up and give a speech to
other students about what they
learned. Thank you so much to
our volunteers for showing these
kids how important education
and training is in order to
succeed in “the real world”. ■

College Art Day
Our annual visit to Highland
Community College for Art
Day proved to be a grand
success. Our very
talented students
walked away with
more ribbons than
ever before. Our Art
History Team won
third against several
large
schools.
One
student,
Josie Baker, was
even awarded a
scholarship based
off of her work! We
had
students
competing in the
hand building clay
challenge,
wheel
throwing challenge,
self
portrait
challenge, sidewalk chalk
challenge and various workshops
all day. These students are
certainly excited to jump in
there and try new things! Please
congratulate these students if
you see them! ■

The Chieftain Stars
Dance Team is
gearing up for their
5th annual Evening
with the Stars 5K
Run.
Dance Team will host a garage sale
from 8am to 3pm in the parking lot
of the field house by the high school
football field. That same day, the
cheer team will have a pie in the
face booth downtown. So there are
plenty of ways our patrons can help
support our dance team and cheer
squad! ■
The Chieftain Stars Dance Team
is gearing up for their 5th annual
Evening with the Stars 5K Run. The
fund-raiser will be Friday June 26th
at 8pm, at (and around) the High
School buildings. The entry fee is
$20 for the first person and $10
per additional family member. As
always, baby-sitting will be provided,
so bring your kiddos to cheer you
on! For registration information
