A TIMELINE
1859: The discovery of gold on the Horsefly
River by Peter Dunlevey starts the Cariboo
Gold Rush. The junction of Bridge Creek and
Little Bridge Creek is a favourite resting place
and watering hole for fur traders traveling the
Fort Alexandria, Fort George, Fort St. John
and Fort Kamloops circuit. The original stopping house is known as Bridge Creek House.
1863: The Cariboo Wagon Road from Yale
north to Soda Creek is completed. William J.
Roper pre-empts 320 acres a few miles north
of Bridge Creek, and builds a log roadhouse
(108 Hotel) north of the road.
1864: Coaches, mule trains and freight
wagons move passengers and supplies along
the 480-km route, a 52-hour voyage. Bridge
Creek House, 100 miles from the jumping
off place on the route to fortune (Lillooet),
is renamed 100 Mile House. These coaches
travel up and down the Cariboo for 50 years
until 1915, the end of the stagecoach era.
1899: Sydney
Stephenson sets up a saw
mill on Bridge Creek in 100 Mile House to
process the abundance of timber available in
the areas as a result of land clearing for agriculture. It is located beside a waterfall, and
powered by a water-driven turbine.
1908: McNeil House is built at 105 Mile

1912: The Marquess of Exeter buys the
15,000 acre 100 Mile House spread. C.G.
Cowan of Kamloops manages the property for
the Marquess until 1930 when the Marquess’
21 year old son, Lord Martin Cecil, moves to
Canada to assume control.
1918: The PGE (Pacific Great Eastern)
begins building their railroad from North
Vancouver to Squamish, and onward through
to Prince George, connecting the Cariboo to
the coast. The highest point on the line was
Lone Butte where today one of the only two
remaining water towers in the province exists.
1932: The Lodge is built by Martin Cecil
to house the cowboys who work on the 15,000
acre ranch. The lumber for the lodge comes
from the small sawmill Syd Stephenson had
erected a mile or two away on Bridge Creek.
1944: The Jens brothers begin a small
sawmill out at Canim Lake. Abundant stands
of timber throughout the South Cariboo draw
dozens of port-able sawmill owners in the late
40’s and 50’s.
1949: In order to establish dwellings in the
100 Mile House area, the Jens brothers enter
into a leasing agreement with Lord Martin
Cecil. The lease agreement proves to be the
first of many from the 15,000 acre estate,
which included all of what is now the District
of 100 Mile House.
1951: Construction and paving of Highway
97 begins, over most of what was the original
Cariboo Wagon Road. Communities such as
Forest Grove, Lone Butte and Lac la Hache
are bigger than 100 Mile House at this time.
1965: The town of 100 Mile House incorporates when the lease property is offered for
sale to the tenants of the estate.
1966: The 100 Mile House Hospital opens.
1969: Block Brothers (H&R Block) pur-
chase the 108 Mile Ranch and develop it
into a resort community. Today, the 108 Mile
Ranch is one of the largest subdivisions in
the South Cariboo with a population of over
2,600.
1980: 100 Mile Free Press newspaper office
burns down, most records and newspaper
archives are lost.
2003: The South Cariboo Recreation
Centre opened in time for the Class of 2003
Graduation.
2004: West
Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. buys
the Weldwood Division Sawmill at Exeter
Site.
2010: The New Library, in a beautiful log
building, opened on Birch Avenue.
