TIPS FOR HANDLERS
1. Coastal Custom Canines, Inc. property is not securely fenced.
It is strongly recommended that prior to running your dog, you
have good “recall” control over your dog, as the dogs will be
off leash.
2. Handlers should wear comfortable, sturdy shoes (no sandals
or flip flops, please!) and be physically able to hold and
release their dogs, as well as catch them.
3. Handlers may carry toys or treats on their persons to assist
with retrieving their dog at the completion of their run.
SUNDAY
4. Dogs will be brought to the start line on leash and released
only upon a verbal signal (“Tally-Ho!”) from the Huntmaster.
Dogs may be released by hand, folded leash or using a
traditional lure coursing slip lead,
5. The Huntmaster will instruct the handler to “Retrieve your dog”
upon completion of the run. The handler is expected to
promptly secure the dog and leave the field with the dog on
leash.
6. Handlers are advised to warm up their dogs prior to their run
and walk them for about 10 minutes afterwards.
7. Coursing Ability is a physically demanding sport so please
make sure your dog is in good shape. If you are not sure,
make an appointment with a veterinarian to get an opinion.
8. Any person, upon reasonable complaint, may be asked to
leave the grounds of the test by the Field Committee and may
be disciplined by the AKC. Children must be under control of
their parents or guardian(s) at all times
Field and Equipment Information: A battery-powered, continuous loop machine will
be used. The lure will consist of white plastic bags. The field is mowed grass and
basically level. The entire course of 600 yds. will be run for the “big dog” class and
one loop (300 yds) of the course will be run for the “small dog” and “flat faced dog”
class. Please refer to “Eligibility and Rules” for details on class eligibility.
Neither Langley Kennel Club (LKC) nor Sight hound
Organization of Tidewater (S.H.O.T), its members, nor
Coastal Custom Canines, Inc. will be responsible for any
accidents at this trial.


All entries must be one year of age or older on the day of the test.
Each dog requires an individual entry form for each event in which it
is entered.
Entries will not be accepted without fees, signatures or the
“Agreement” found on the Official AKC Entry Form.
Bitches in season and lame dogs will be refused entry and, if
presented at inspection, will be refunded entry fees.
Mixed breeds must be spayed or neutered to be eligible to run. AKC
registered dogs with breed disqualifications may be entered.
Coursing is an athletic activity that can tax a dog’s physical strength.
Dogs that are overweight and/or out of condition may be at greater
risk for injury and exhaustion. The Inspection Committee has the
authority to disallow a dog’s entry into a test, and in such instances,
applicable entry fees will be refunded.
Battery powered, continuous loop lure machines will be used. The
lure will consist of white plastic strips. Backup equipment will be
available.
Exhibitors should follow their veterinarian’s recommendation to
assure their dogs are free of parasites, any communicable diseases
and have appropriate vaccinations.
The Huntmaster is responsible for field safety and therefore he/she is
in complete charge of all dogs and handlers on the field. In service to
this responsibility, he/she has the authority to stop the lure in any
potentially dangerous situation and signal the handler to retrieve a
testing dog.
Any decisions made by the event’s officiating judge(s) regarding the
performance of an entered dog shall be final. Full discretionary
power is given to the judge(s) to withhold any and all qualifications
for lack of merit. The Judge(s) is responsible for ensuring
compliance with the AKC Regulations on the field.
No entry fees will be refunded if the event cannot be started or
completed by reason of riots, civil disturbances, fire, extreme and/or
dangerous weather conditions, an act of God, public emergency, act
of a public enemy, strikes or any other cause beyond the control of
the Club or its members and representatives.
Persons exhibiting conduct detrimental to AKC/PKCLC/any
dog(s)/other person(s) will be asked to leave the trial site.
The event-hosting club, its agents, members, representatives,
volunteers, etc., assume no liability or responsibility for any loss,
damage or injury sustained by exhibitors, handlers, or to any of their
dogs or property and further assumes no responsibility for injury to
children or spectators before, during, or after this event

CHAPTER XV COURSING ABILITY TEST REGULATIONS
Dogs can go directly to the Inspection Committee and a Run Order List will be posted.
January 2010
Section 1. Purpose. The purpose of the AKC Coursing Ability Test is to provide all dogs and their
owners an enjoyable, healthy activity in which they can participate. Dogs run singularly and are
required to complete their course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a maximum
amount of time. This is a pass – fail event. Based on the sport of lure coursing, Coursing Ability
Tests will serve as an introduction to the sport for all eligible dog owners.
Section 2. All applicable administrative regulations governing Lure Coursing Tests shall apply to
Coursing Ability Tests unless specifically addressed in this chapter.
Section 3. Eligibility to Enter. Coursing Ability Tests are open to all dogs at least 12 months of
age that are individually registered with the AKC, recorded in the Foundation Stock Service
(FSS) program, individually registered with a foreign or domestic registry organization whose
pedigrees are acceptable for AKC registration, dogs granted a Purebred Alternative Listing
(PAL) number, dogs with AKC Limited or Conditional Registration, or dogs enrolled in the AKC
Canine Partners program. Dogs with breed disqualifications are eligible to enter. Females in
season may not enter. A dog may enter only once per event. (An event is defined by an event
number.)
Section 4. Clubs Eligible to Hold Coursing Ability Tests. Any club licensed to hold AKC Lure
Coursing events is automatically licensed to hold a Coursing Ability Test. At some point in the
future after an initial start-up period, any club licensed to hold companion events may apply to
become licensed to hold Coursing Ability Tests. The start-up period will be decided by the
Performance Events Department.
Section 5. Inspection Committee. An inspection committee consisting of at least two persons
who are members of the field committee shall inspect each entry for lameness, fitness to
compete and females in season. Inspection shall take place prior to any form of wrapping being
applied to the dog. In the opinion of the inspection committee, any entry found to be lame, unfit
to compete or a female in season shall not be allowed to enter and entry fees shall be refunded.
Section 6. Making Event Application. Licensed clubs may make application to the American
Kennel Club to hold an event on a designated form downloadable from the AKC website at
www.akc.org/pdfs/events/lure_coursing/Coursing_Ability_Application.pdf. Paper or e-mail
applications will be accepted. No on-line event application process will be available. Approval
and close out correspondence would all be done via e-mail. Events may be either stand-alone
tests or may be held at the conclusion of a club’s Lure Coursing event. In either case the
Coursing Ability Test must be applied for as a separate event. If a club is concerned that entries
may be more than can be accommodated, the club may state a numeric limit in the premium.
The application fee shown on the form must accompany the application. A club may hold up to
eight Coursing Ability Tests per calendar year. A club may hold no more than two Coursing
Ability Tests on the same day. If a Coursing Ability Test is held at the conclusion of a Lure
Coursing event, the club may use the same premium however both event numbers must appear
on the entry form.
Section 7. Eligibility to Judge. All AKC approved Lure Coursing event judges are approved to
judge a Coursing Ability Test.
Section 8. Course Design. The course shall be basically rectangular in shape with turns no more
acute than 90 degrees. The total length of the course shall be no less than 600 yards and
should be as close to 600 yards as is possible. The lure will consist of plastic strips. Depending
of the size and type of dog, the dog will run either the full course or a 300-yard course. The 300yard distance shall be clearly marked. Safety is of utmost importance. Many of the dogs running
the Coursing Ability Test will not posses the agility of a sight hound and this must be a
consideration in the design of a course.
Section 9. Distance and Maximum Time. Dogs run singularly. 300-Yard Course. This distance is
for dogs shorter than 12 inches at the withers and / or brachycephalic (“flat-faced”) dogs. A dog
must complete this course in less than 1 ó minutes. 600-Yard Course. This distance is used for
all dogs that do not run the 300-yard course. A dog must complete this course in less than 2
minutes. If there is a question which course a dog should run, the judge will decide.
Section 10. Passing Performance. The Coursing Ability Test is a pass – fail event. In order to
pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within the
maximum amount of time for the course length. The judge keeps the official time and decides
the merits of the dog’s performance.
WHAT MUST MY DOG DO TO PASS THE C.A.T.? The Coursing Ability Test
(C.A.T.) is a pass/fail test wherein all entrants always run singly. This is to say they
run once, and they run alone. Because safety is of the utmost importance, the C.A.T.
takes into consideration the individual dog pursuing qualification and therefore has
two different course lengths to accommodate the type and size of the entrant. In
either case, dogs will chase a lure made of plastic strips.
DOGS LESS THAN 12” TALL & “FLAT FACED” DOGS. Any entrant that is less
than 12” tall at the withers and/or brachycephalic will run a clearly marked 300-yard
course that is basically rectangular in shape with turns no more acute than 90
degrees. For a 300-yard course, a dog must complete the test in less than 1 ½
minutes. All dogs in this class will be wicketed.
DOGS MORE THAN 12” TALL. Any entrant that is taller than 12” at the withers and
not brachycephalic (flat faced) shall run a clearly marked 600-yard course (or as close
to 600 yards as possible) that is basically rectangular in shape with turns no more
acute than 90 degrees. For a 600-yard course, a dog must complete the test in less
than 2 minutes.
In order to pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and
without interruption within the maximum amount of time for the course length.
The judge keeps the official time and decides the merits of the dog’s
performance.
If there is a question which course a dog should run, the judge will decide.
CAN MY DOG EARN AN AKC TITLE FOR COURSING ABILITY? Three titles will
be awarded for dogs that pass the Coursing Ability Test the required number of times.
These are suffix titles that will appear on a dog’s pedigree with a higher-level title
superseding a lower level title.
Coursing Ability (CA) – Awarded to a dog that passes the Coursing Ability Test
three times under at least two different judges.
Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) - Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test ten times.
Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) – Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 25 times.
Coursing Ability Excellent 2 (CAX2) – Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 50
times. A higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional 25 passes.
Section 11. Ribbons or Rosettes. A club holding Coursing Ability Test shall offer a ribbon or
rosette to each dog that receives a qualification toward a Coursing Ability title. Each ribbon or
rosette shall be at least two inches wide and eight inches long and shall bear on its face a
facsimile of the seal of The American Kennel Club, the words “Coursing Ability Test Qualifying”,
and the name of the test-giving club. Ribbons or rosettes shall be orange in color.
Section 12. Titles. Three titles will be awarded for dogs that pass the Coursing Ability Test the
required number of times. These are suffix titles that will appear on a dog’s pedigree with a
higher level title superseding a lower level title.

times under at least two different judges.
Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) - Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test ten times.

Coursing Ability Excellent 2 (CAX2) – Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 50 times.
A higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional twenty five passes.
Section 13. Submission of Results. All necessary forms for recording results will be
downloadable from the AKC website. Event forms/booklets that are not easily downloadable
can be requested by e-mail to the PE Department ([email protected]). In many cases clubs will
have these forms/booklets as a result of holding lure coursing events. The applicable recording
fee shown on the Event Secretaries Report must be submitted at the time results are mailed to
the Performance Events Department.

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS


Weather in November is very unpredictable – expect anything
from warm to rain to cold – bring rain gear, layers of clothing,
hat, gloves, sunglasses and a chair. Also remember to bring
stakes for your shade cloths and canopies!
You may also need to bring a coat or sweater for your short hair
dog
WHAT ARE PRE-ENTRIES? ~ Entries made before the closing date. However even
if your entry is mailed in time yet due to the failure of the postal service, it is not
received in time for the Test Secretary to have it at the Event, then you will have to fill
out day of entry forms on the day of the trial. Always have your dog's registration
materials with you when you go to a test.
SLIP LEADS ~ There is a type of collar for coursing called a slip lead, which is worn
only to control the dog prior to "release". The collar drops away as the dog is
released to chase the lure and they run without anything around their necks that could
be dangerous.
***NO CHOKE COLLARS OF ANY KIND WILL BE WORN WHILE TESTING***
*ENTRIES MAY WEAR A FLAT COLLAR WITH NO TAGS*
SNOODS ARE PERMITTED TO BE WORN BY DOGS
WITH LONG EARS.
The Dog Sport Photographers, 714 N. Fifth St., Hampton, Va.

INSPECTION~ dogs will be inspected by a designated Inspection Committee
consisting of at least two persons who are members of the Field Committee and who
shall inspect each entered dog for lameness, fitness to compete and female estrus (in
season). Inspection shall take place prior to any form of wrapping being applied to
the dog. In the opinion of the Inspection Committee, any entry found to be lame, unfit
to compete or in season shall not be allowed to enter and the applicable entry fees
shall be refunded.
ROLL CALL ~ is the time, prior to the commencement of coursing, by which you are
supposed to have your dog ready for inspection by the Inspection Committee. At roll
call the dog is examined for lameness, and breed disqualifications (where applicable).
Bitches are examined to see if they show any evidence of being in season. After roll
call the list of passed hounds is taken to the Field Test Secretary so that the run order
can be prepared.
RUN ORDER LIST ~ this is a posted list of the running order for the dogs participating
in the event. ~ Always check the record sheet after the Roll Call to confirm your dog’s
Run Order.
