The GAHCC Establishes Site Selection Committee
The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
(GAHCC) is searching for an optimal location for its
chamber offices.
The following is an interview with Mari Flores, Director
of Finance and Site Selection Participant describing the
purpose of this committee.
ALICIA MALDONADO (AM): What is the GAHCC
looking for in a new location?
MARI FLORES (MF): Our lease in expiring on December
2010, and we are looking for a more central location that
would be accessible to our expanding membership. We
also would like to have a conference/board room that
could accommodate our 21 Board Members for our
monthly board meetings.
AM: Who is on your site- selection committee?
MF: There is a mixture of Board Members and Members
At-Large and the committee has a total of seven
representatives. We have an Architect, Realtors,
Bankers, and Small Business Owners.
AM: What will the site selection committee process
include?
MF: They will be visiting Hispanic Chamber offices in
Houston and San Antonio to get a feel for existing
Chamber sites. They will then use their experiences and
knowledge of the Austin area to come up with some
location alternatives by the December time-frame.
AM: In additional to the
more central location and
larger Board Room, with
other specifications will
you be looking for?
MF: From a square footage
point of view, we are looking
for a minimum of 5.000 sq.
ft. ideally; 7,500 sq. ft. will
allow the chamber to grow
strategically without having
to relocate from a new
location any time soon.
AM: Are you looking for
assistance from your
general membership during
your site selection search?
Mari Flores
Director of Finance and
Site Selection Participant
MF: Yes. In fact, the committee has also discussed the
possibility of reaching out to Los Tejanos (former GAHCC
Board Chairs) and ask for their assistance in locating an
ideal Chamber site. Our Tejanos continue to provide
assistance to the GAHCC and the community at-large.
For more information, please contact Mari Flores at
(512) 462-4303 or [email protected].
FROM THE COMMITTEE CHAIR
“We feel that it is important for the Chamber to establish a site selection committee to
focus on finding the best location possible, where we can continue serving Hispanic
businesses in Austin. I lead a committee of talented individuals who have real estate
experience, from all aspects, and who have a wide network of people. This network
of people could possibly assist the Chamber with meeting its goal of finding a new
location over the next 9 months. Ideally, we would love an opportunity to purchase a
building. This scenario would allow the Chamber to continue expanding it’s services,
freely and continue to contribute to the economic well being of Austin, Texas.”
Anna Sanchez
Chair of the Site Selection Committee.

The GAHCC Ambassador Program
The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber Ambassadors are the goodwill “arm” of the Chamber and thus are charged with
extending the hand of friendship to new, current and future members alike. The Ambassadors promote retention by
assisting members in maximizing their Chamber membership, welcoming new members and attending ribbon cuttings and
other Chamber events overall. The Chamber also relies on the Ambassadors to serve as a communication link between
the Chamber and its members by relaying information to and from members, identifying member concerns, and garnering
support for the Chamber. An Ambassador of the Month is awarded each month and is recognized in GAHCC Noticias
e-newsletter and monthly Power Networking Breakfast. Additionally, one lucky Ambassador will be awarded the Ambassador
of the Year and will be recognized at the GAHCC Annual Banquet.

Emerging Enterprises helps cultivate the Color Factory
Fifteen years ago Gilbert and his wife helped her father open
his own business and Gilbert had his first taste of
entrepreneurship. This initial taste sparked his thirst for
business, so Gilbert and his wife embarked on their own
entrepreneurial journey. They were two artists with the
passion to create and the heart to give back to the community.

I learned the importance of creating a
process, a plan, and
an execution strategy.
I also learned that
mistakes happen and
success is built on
how we manage and
minimize their effects.

a good product or service. The support and advice combined
together gave me the confidence needed by all successful
entrepreneurs; I thank EE for that confidence.”
The excitement of starting a business certainly did not come
without fears. Gilbert’s three main fears were: giving up the
security of a steady paycheck, supporting his family while
starting a business and how he was going to raise the
start-up capital for equipment and general expenses.
His creativity and passion took form in The Color Factory,
a total identity group specializing in creating and communicating an image and branding. The company’s services
include; logo designs, apparel branding, silk screening,
embroidery and specialty/promotional items.
Gilbert explains how the incubator relieved many of his fears:

we can call on. Herb [Herberto Ochoa] has vested unbiased
interest in our success. Sometimes having someone tell
you what you need to hear instead of what you want to hear

Represented by President/CEO Andy Martinez and Board Member

Live in Austin – Give in Austin
By Brittany Brunson, Media and Education Programs
The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce encourages
its members to get involved in their community. Below are three
great ways to be able to give back through community service!
* Eastside Memorial Seeks Employment for Students
Eastside Memorial High School is kicking off a program that
allows Juniors and Seniors to leave school early to go to work.
Their goal is to find these students a part time job of 10-15 hours
per week. The program calls for year round employment in a
paid position, preferably. If your business is looking for part
time help, this is a great way to hire a motivated employee while
giving a student the chance to learn more about the working
environment. Carl Higginbotham, a teacher at Eastside Memorial
High School, states that you can, “Help prepare a student with
valuable workplace experience and in doing so, open the door
for a future career”.
If your business can provide part time employment for these students, please contact Mr. Higginbotham at [email protected].
* Join the GAHCC Education Committee – Plan for the Future of Tomorrow’s Workforce
The GAHCC Education Committee was formed because the Chamber knows that an educated workforce is essential to a
successful workforce; its purpose is to support educational initiatives for the GAHCC. Part of the responsibility of the Education
Committee is to plan and implement the Eastside Memorial High School Mentorship Program. If helping implement educational programs sounds like the right volunteer opportunity for you, please feel free to join the Education Committee at the
next meeting on July 9th from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the GAHCC Conference Room.
Please contact Brittany Brunson at [email protected] or (512) 462-4313 if you are interested in joining the Education
Committee.
* GAHCC Education Committee’s Eastside Memorial High School Mentorship Program Seeks Mentors
Make a difference in someone’s life – mentor a high school student! The EMHS Mentorship Program will be kicking off
another year with the beginning of school in August. This year’s curriculum includes the Girl Scouts Ropes Course, to teach
teambuilding; a trip to Half Price Books, to emphasize the importance to reading; and a visit to Texas A&M in College
Station, to give the students a chance to visit a college campus.
The time commitment for a mentor is:
• 2 independent lunches a month, 30 minutes each
• 1 group lunch a month, 30 minutes
• 1 Saturday field trip a month, 3 hours
If you have more questions about this incredibly rewarding program, please contact Brittany Brunson at (512) 462-4313 or

The GAHCC Education Foundation Presents the 2nd Annual
Education Summer Concert with “Don Yojan y La Frescura”
By Linda Medina, Education Foundation
The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce Education Foundation, in partnership
with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation
Department, will present “Don Yojan y La
Frescura” at the 2009 Summer Hillside Concert
Series. The concert will be held on Tuesday,
July 14th at the Pan-American Recreation
Center, located at 2100 East 3rd Street, from 6:00
p.m.-9:00 p.m.
A mix of Latin Urban Rythms with the unique
touch - only diversity can bring - is what makes
Don Yojan & La Frescura the up - and - coming
band of the year.
The United States, Mexico, Panama and Honduras
are the four nations and respective cultures that
forged these men into the fine musicians and song writers they are today. As they were growing up, they all decided they
would live a life free of drugs and full of accomplishments. During their relatively short careers as musicians they have
already had the privilege of playing SXSW, one of the largest and most recognized music events around the world; “El
Festival Internacional Cervantino,” Mexico’s largest display of arts and music; and Austin City Limits Music Festival.
Targeted towards high schools with large Hispanic populations, this one-of-a-kind summer music series is designed to
embrace the Hispanic culture while promoting the importance of education and staying in school.
Last year over 500 Austinites packed the Oswaldo A.B. Cantu Pan-American Recreation Center in East Austin as top
Billboard recording artist Chingo Bling, music stars Jay Capone and Trampia, as well as NFL football stars Marcus and
Michael Griffin all shared their inspirational stories while motivating students to stay in school.
In addition to the performance by “Don Yojan y La Frescura”, the Austin Community College Mobile Go Center will present
college related material and assistance directly to students and their families. Mobile Go Centers are part of the College for
Texans Campaign to support the state’s effort in closing the educational gap by enrolling an additional 630,000 Texans into
college by 2015.
