Celebrating25 Years!
TIGER MAPLE CHEST WITH PANELED SIDES
T
Nicely figured tiger maple, strong ogee bracket feet, substantial crown moulding and
paneled sides are a start. Add inlay on the drawer fronts and secret drawers and we have
a Kinloch classic. We designed the brasses and had them cast in England.

wenty-five years have passed incredibly fast. Our shop now has windows, heat, and a roof that
doesn’t leak. We still work with many of our original customers and have added their children
to our list of patrons. We have worked hard on understanding design. What works, what misses.
The furniture we are making is not a copy or a reproduction, but an original work. Frequently based
on furniture of the past, we admire the old details, then we add our creativity so that each Kinloch
piece is unique. We believe this adds additional value to our work, which makes it much more
desirable today and extremely collectable tomorrow. We cannot compete against the lore of the
antique, so our work has to be better crafted, better designed, and we must use better wood.
T
We have collected lumber for thirty years, and so we have an impressive selection. We have
the proper wood to make a project jump! Bubinga boards 56" wide, figured mahogany boards up to
48" wide, curly cherry, 6" x 6" fiddle back mahogany bedposts, huge mahogany crotches, pearwood,
and rosewood, just to brag a bit.
In addition to good design and impressive wood, we have worked to become great craftsmen.
There is much we learn from the past and we apply those lessons to improve our work. Our finishes
through the years have been many. We are talented enough to match any age finish a customer would
like. We have learned that less coloring and finish creates a more comfortable finish. Lightly stained if
needed then thin brushed on coats of shellac. Finally, rubbed out and waxed with lots of old-fashioned
elbow grease. If protection from a damp glass is needed, then we add a couple coats of varnish.
Our shop and showroom are open to visit. The showroom is a Victorian house filled with our
furniture which is all for sale – not samples, but “I want this one...you can have it.” The furniture is
set off by oriental rugs and art on the walls. Walking through one sees the range of Kinloch’s work.
We get bored doing the same things – so we don’t. Federal inlay, carvings...well you will see in the
catalog what we do. The shop is clean and has that lovely woodshop smell. Accurate woodworking
machines, interesting rough lumber, projects being crafted and finished and antiques being restored,
are what you’ll see. Some customers visit their commission many times as it is built, so that they can
see and understand all the neat joinery and intricate decisions that go into their piece. We make
what our customers ask. We design what our customers need. We are also able to create pieces that
we are passionate about, then feature them in the showroom.
Come visit, wander, look and touch, search for the secret drawers and the hidden chocolate
Kinloch coins.
We look forward to the next twenty-five years. It is exciting to think how far we have come,
how much fun we have had, how many people we have made happy. Almost everyday we have a
feeling that today we created something special. We thank all our customers.
Celebrating25 Years!
A well-designed clock
is complete with a great
dial and movement.
Our clock movements
are made locally.
Starting with brass and
steel sheet stock, each
part is handmade except
for the bell, which is cast
in England. Each dial
is unique and many
times incorporates
a customer’s favorite
flowers or images.

TIGER MAPLE TALL CASE CLOCK
T
This tiger maple clock is not a copy or a reproduction; it is an original Kinloch design. We
have used our twenty-five years of experience to design a truly great Chester County clock.

WALNUT STEP-BACK CUPBOARD
W
A very prominent antique dealer saw our cupboard and exclaimed that he wished to purchase the
original cupboard from which we had reproduced our design, as he had a customer who was looking for
an amazing cupboard. We accepted the compliment that our cupboard was amazing, but had to explain
our design was an original Kinloch creation, not a copy or reproduction.
Kinloch designed and locally crafted rat-tail hinges, hand-blown glass, and very pleasing shellac and
wax finish.

An eighteenth century design revisited using bookmatched crotch mahogany
tops and matching drawer. The legs are carved from quited mahogany.

Graceful turnings, wonderful wood and a shelf to store books
make this a darling end table.

MAHOGANY BOW FRONT CHEST
M
We have made many Charleston influenced designs. This chest with its curved drawers of equal size,
intricate inlays, simple hardware and swelled corners is just a charmer. Simple, yet the more you look,
the more neat details you see.

PAINTED CHEST
P
Design that is not too sophisticated; wear marks
in the right places and a painted surface that looks
200 years old. But there’s more – the top drawers
flip up, the bottom down, so that a TV, computer,
or stereo equipment can be hidden.

MAHOGANY CARVED BED
M
Amazing carving, with a single board crotch mahogany headboard. Each bed we make starts with what mattress
is being used. Not just queen or king, but how thick? Some mattresses are 7" thick and some 22" thick. Without
planning for the correct mattress, you can end up with the bed way too high and covering the headboard completely.
Therefore to design your bed, we start with which mattress is being used and design a bed that works for you.
We based the carvings of this bed on the Cadwalader furniture made in Philadelphia in 1760s – some of the best
carving that was done in the 18th Century.

BUBINGA TABLE WITH ZEBRAWOOD BENCHES
B
Kinloch does contemporary design, too – and we think very well. Single board figured Bubinga top.
We have boards up 56" wide. The bases on the benches and table are ebonized mahogany. The benches
are Zebrawood and the seats are sculpted so they are very comfortable. This table went to Manhattan,
and wouldn’t fit in the elevator. Bubinga is very, very heavy. We were glad to have four people to help.

MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD
M
We visited Charleston to study the sideboard that we thought was a good starting point for our
Charleston sideboard. Then we worked out the design, adjusting shapes of ovals, and thickness of legs,
inlays, orientation, and use of figured wood. Certainly not a copy, but a Kinloch created sideboard,
brings together the great works of 18th Century Charleston and Kinloch Woodworking’s knowledge,
talent, and design sense.
We had to bend the brasses to fit the curve of the drawer.

Little details do make a difference. The shapes of the mouldings, the choices in woods for the inlays,
and the precision of the craft show Kinloch’s commitment to quality and design.
PAINTED WASHSTANDS AND BARBER’S POLE

We do have fun. Matched pair of washstands. Painted Barber’s pole on stand with gold-leaf ends.

BARBADOS CABINET
B
Mouldings carved with shells and shell
finials add to the Caribbean spirit of the
cabinet. Mahogany and mahogany crotch
veneers along with a highly carved door
make this cabinet jump! We designed the
cabinet for a house in Barbados.

LIBRARY BREAKFRONT
L
Original design was published in Thomas
Chippendale’s Director 1762. We changed
the feet and added inlay and used very
nicely figured mahogany. The cartouche was
missing, so we designed and carved flowers
in a basket, based on Philadelphia and
Charleston ideas. We just visited this cabinet
on Long Island and the customer said he
thought his cabinet was “the finest piece
we had made.”

WALNUT LINE AND BERRY CHEST
W
A nice diminutive sized walnut chest with arched top drawers. The sides are paneled, as well as the back,
also in walnut. Proud mouldings with substantial bracket feet. The inlay on each drawer is proportioned to
the drawer size. Working locks on each drawer, cast brasses from England, and even a large secret drawer.
Exceptionally delicate inlay. The line is maple. The tulips are quarter-sawn sycamore. The berries are
Osage orange, red cedar, and butternut.

MAHOGANY AND BIRDSEYE MAPLE DESK
M
A light, delicate Federal design. The dark mahogany and mahogany
crotch are balanced with the whimsical birdseye maple. Reeded
legs, hand-blown glass, and custom hardware make an elegant desk.
Fall-front is lined with gold tooled green leather.
Pull the top drawer out, and inkwells and secret compartments await.
Mahogany with birdseye maple tops and lined with pacific cloth.
The hardware was created at Kinloch. Each drawer a different season.

TIGER MAPLE LADDERBACK ARM CHAIR
T
Trestle tables work well because no one gets a
leg. Our table has an amazing bookmatched top,
breadboard ends and 42 hand cut lambs tongues.
An original Kinloch design.

Most ladderbacks are uncomfortable. So we made
ours wider and deeper, and changed the angle of
the back to the seat, so our chair is comfortable.
Real rush seat. Lovely turnings, especially the
finial on top, the rear legs, and the bulbous front
stretcher. Highly figured tiger maple, and yes,
the chair is comfortable.

GALLOPING DRAGON RESTORATION
G
Contemporary can be fun. We enjoy working in
many styles and have the design and craftsmanship
background to execute neat stuff.

Kinloch also restores antiques and furniture
that is worth fixing correctly. This carousel
creature was rescued from the Brandywine
Creek after a flood. It required lots of work,
and our client wanted it painted, as it
was new. Carved in England by Arthur
Anderson in 1915. It is now the highlight
of a child’s playroom.
