FINE EUROPEAN DINING SINCE 1980
At Crumpets Restaurant
& Bakery, we strive to
make your dining experience enjoyable and delicious. Chef Francois Maeder has brought his
European cooking skills to San Antonio so
that you can enjoy the taste, without the
travel. Surrounded by live oak trees, decorative ponds, and running waterfalls, you'll
enjoy our fresh seafood, pasta, beef, and
chicken for lunch or dinner every day.
Among our many recognitions, we have
been voted one of Esquire's 100 best restaurants, not limited only to only San Antonio
Restaurants.
RSVPs are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 12. Contact Rebecca at 210-296-4133
or [email protected] to reserve
your spot.
Reservation policy: reservations or cancellations must be made by the stated deadline (usually 5 p.m. the Wednesday before each luncheon). Anyone needing to cancel who does not do so by this deadline will be responsible for
the full cost of the luncheon.

Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna
Landvik The women of Freesia Court are convinced that
there is nothing good coffee, delectable desserts, and a strong shoulder can’t fix. Laughter
is the glue that holds them together—the foundation of a book group they call AHEB (Angry
Housewives Eating Bon Bons), an unofficial
“club” that becomes much more. It becomes a
lifeline. Holding on through forty eventful
years, there’s Faith, a lonely mother of twins
who harbors a terrible secret that has condemned her to living a lie; big, beautiful Audrey, the resident sex queen who knows that
with good posture and an attitude you can get
away with anything; Merit, the shy doctor’s
wife with the face of an angel and the private
hell of an abusive husband; Kari, a wise woman
with a wonderful laugh who knows the greatest
gifts appear after life’s fiercest storms; and finally, Slip, a tiny spitfire of a woman who isn’t
afraid to look trouble straight in the eye.
Available from Amazon in hardcover and paperback (for pennies), for your Kindle, on audio
cassette, and from your San Antonio Public
libraries (www.mysapl.org): available on-line
or for download.
We generally meet on the4th Tuesday of each
month from 11am to 1pm. Meeting place and
details TBD. Contact Lauren Fredregill at [email protected] for more information.

Bring crafting ideas to Craft Circle
Spouses’ Club Bike Ride?
By Joy Kellner, Craft Circle Coordinator
By Rich Arnold, Biking guru
The Craft Circle is the trendy name for the Craft Club because a circle
is round and has no end and that is how long a crafter of any kind will
be your friend.
To piggyback on my article from the last spring
issue on the cycling opportunities here in San
Antonio, I am organizing a ride. Here is my vision…We gather as a group to do a short segment of the Salado Creek Greenway. We meet
here at my house (2441 (111) Artillery Post Rd) at
0830 on 18 Sep. I’ll do a quick safety check/
add some air. I can put 3 additional bikes on the
back of my truck. At 0900, we depart for the
trailhead on Seguin Rd which is accessible outside the Schofield Rd gate. That should put as at
the trailhead at 0920 if you want to drive/ride to
meet there. We do a 3 mile or however long out
and then back. Load up bikes, and back to my
house. Sound like fun? Yes. Sound like
work? Yes. Let’s do it!!! If interested, shoot me
an Email at [email protected]. If successful, we can build on further dates and adventures.
The Craft Circle meets the third Thursday of the month and during the
day between 9am-2pm, depending on the craft. If craft opportunities
cannot be coordinated on that Thursday then as long as there is minimum required participation met it can occur on another day. As the
Craft Circle Coordinator (the CCC, lol) I will canvas our members and
their talents first to be presented to those of us willing and wanting to
try new crafts.
For the month of September, we will have a crafter get-together at Joy
Kellner’s residence, 483 Wheaton Road, Fort Sam Houston at 9am,
September 20th. Bring anything portable you are working on or just
come with any kind of craft ideas, socialize and hear about what Craft
Circle plans to do for the upcoming month of October and November.
Please let me know you would like to attend by contacting Joy via
email at: joyfulmi@sbcglobal.

Tech Corner: Tech nirvana, and important security tips
By Rich Arnold, Webmaster
The big events this month are a supposed announcement of a new Kindle Fire, introduction
of the iPhone 5 along with iOS 6, and possibly a
new iPod Touch and new iPAD mini. With
Windows 8 and its hardware set to roll out in
October, you will no doubt be bombarded for
your tech dollar not only from industry but
your kids!!
While these times seem like tech nirvana with
the roll out of so many devices coming out
along with fast LTE and WiFi pipes to feed
them, look before you leap. Figure out how you
would use the device or devices. My wife has
an iPhone and iPad. She loves both but absolutely loves her iPad because it does what she
wants a device to do. I have an iPhone and I try
to visualize myself with an iPad (or any
Pad). The pads obviously have a large viewing
screen, but my iPhone is with me all the time. I
don’t have to go back and forth between devices
and wonder where my pad is. So, I don’t see
the cost benefit tilting towards putting out
money for another device.
If you decide to upgrade, the Thrift Shop will be
happy to consign your electronic devices. Look
up on Craigslist what you might be able to get
for an item. You’d be surprised at the market
for older iPod Touches. If the device is too ancient or broken, don’t throw it in the
trash. Best Buy and other electronic stores will
take them free for recycle.
I also want to touch on security. Recently, my
wife’s Hotmail account was compromised. We
tried to trace it back to where the breach occurred but couldn’t (which was a bit frustrating). So here are some lessons learned to take
from it.
1. Many places have you log in with an Email
address. Well, what is the first thing you think
of for your password? The password associated
with that Email address. Don’t use it! Your
Email account should have its own password. Use a different password for sites that
have you use your Email address as the login/
User ID.
2. Always be mindful of any Email you receive. A hacker’s quickest way to outsmart you
is to make you think that it is someone you
know. With that in mind:
a.
Be very wary of Email without a
subject line.
b. Be very wary of Email with a
hyperlink and no “obvious” verbiage from a
friend to describe what it is. You should know
how your friend writes. Never write or believe,
“Check this out” for a link that is in an Email.
c.
Do not open attachments from
anyone you don’t know. If you send an attachment, make sure you describe what it is.
d. If you unwittingly clicked on a
link or opened an attachment, change your
Email password as a minimum and consider
your financial (bank) passwords too.
3. If you receive a suspect Email from a
friend, contact that friend ASAP. They may not
know that their account has been compromised.
4. If your account has been compromised,
change your Email password ASAP. Monitor
it. Try and find out who bogus Email has been
sent to and have someone (your spouse or
whomever), Email out a warning to them.
Hackers are out there looking for the “low
hanging fruit.” Keep your device software
patched. Use vigilance and common sense
when online. Don’t rely on firewalls and antivirus software as the first line of defense but
as the last line.

The Spouses’ Club Thrift Shop celebrates its Grand Opening
The Thrift Shop at Fort Sam Houston is open! We
had a wonderfully successful Grand Opening on
Saturday, August 18, with General Theresa Carter
giving a few opening remarks. We celebrated with
cupcakes, punch and lots of door prizes. Kelly and I
want to thank all our volunteers who worked so
tirelessly to make the Thrift Shop Grand Opening a
success! We would love for you to come shop and/or
volunteer! We will be open on every Wednesday,
Thursday, and the third Saturday of each month
from 9am -2pm. We will be accepting fall and Halloween decorations beginning September 19.

New this year is a Lunch Bunch sub-club group for those
members who have little ones not in school or part time in
school (if it fits your schedule), not that we are excluding
members without lil’ buddies.
The Lunch Bunch will meet at local fares that have kid
menus and reasonable prices (and if it has a play place even
better, but it may not). It is a chance for those members who
cannot make it to the general meeting/luncheon due to
childcare constraints, but would like to get caught up and
have a meal with grown-ups too. Since I am spearheading
this group, it will fall on the third Thursday and we will meet
at places at 11am to eat. No RSVP required, whoever shows
up great, so don’t let me eat alone. For September 20th
Lunch Bunch will meet at the McDonald’s on Broadway at
11am in the Play Place.

know you’re coming (not required) or want to know more
