MIKE VADIE ATTORNEY AT LAW
Residents of Katy Protest Potential “Ardenwood Park” Planned Development
At the City Council meeting on June
27th there was a Public Hearing to receive
comments from residents concerning a
Proposed Ordinance of the City of Katy,
Texas amending Zoning Ordinance No.
621.
The ordinance reads as follows:
“An Ordinance of the City Council of the
City of Katy, Texas Amending the Zoning
Ordinance of the City of Katy, Texas
Ordinance No. 621; Creating “Ardenwood
Park” planned Development District, and
approximately 204.36 acre tract single
family residential and commercial use
development located South of Clay Road,
East of Katy-Hockley Road, West of KatyHockley Cut Off Road and North of Morton
Road; Allowing for future subdivision
of tracts of land within the “Ardenwood
Park” planned Development District…”
This would allow the land to be rezoned
from a Residential-1 designation to a
planned development district. The rezoning
would open the way for new residential
and commercial development to be built.
The development named Ardenwood Park
would have 374 homes and a more than
47-acre strip center with mixed retail.
The proposed development constructed
by
the
Houston-based
developer
Ardenwood Group is going to be situated
near Hunters Terrace neighborhood in Katy.
Between 100 and 150 residents attended
the meeting to vent their frustration and
concerns with the proposal. Residents’
comments to City Council included:
• The new development would make
traffic problems worse
• Create the potential for flooding
• Would attract criminals
The residents feel that the City Council
elected officials have not done a thorough
investigation into all the potential
ramifications of the proposed development.
More than 14 different speakers addressed
the council, with some speaking twice.
Berzin “Fred” Bhandara, a representative
for the developer, took the podium to
address the concerns stating that they want
to be good neighbors.
History:
The Council decided to continue the
hearing at the July 25th meeting. During
the July 25th meeting, again there were
more than 100 residents present to present
their concerns.
On Monday, July 25th there were so
many residents present, many had to stand
both at the back of the room, as well as in
the council chamber doorways and lobby.
The same speakers from the previous
meeting again came forward to voice their
concerns and presented the council with a
petition signed by more than 200 residents
asking the council to reject the Ardenwood
Park PDD. The speakers went on to say
that it was clearly a Houston plan and
that this PDD should not be a model for
Katy. The residents would prefer a strictly
residential community that did not include
commercial property.
A few speakers made not-so-veiled

threats to any council members who chose to vote in favor
of the Ardenwood Park PPD.
One Hunters Terrace resident that was against the
opposition stated that they were acting like a mob by
implying that if the council did not vote their way, they
would be voted out in the next election. Several residents
took offense to this statement, voiced their displeasure,
and tried to shut the resident down. The resident then
continued, stating this was exactly what he meant.
When Bhandara went to the podium to speak, he stated
his group was willing to go back to the drawing board and
make more changes, but that didn’t mean that they should
throw “the baby out with the bathwater.” He continued
to say that he realizes that drainage is a big issue and
promises they will do everything in their power to make
sure this neighborhood drains correctly. He also stated
that they intended to include more detention ponds in the
new neighborhood, where Hunters Terrace does not have
one.
Next:
Councilman Durran Dowdle suggested the
representatives from the Hunters Terrace area and the
Ardenwood Group sit down and work their differences
out.
“[The residents] should be part of the discussion,” said
Dowdle. “Let’s move forward and continue this hearing
and find an applicable agreement for all parties.”
The only difference in the two city council meetings
was that the parties concerned – Ardenwood Group, the
developer, and the residents dissatisfied with the PDD as
it was presented – have agreed to sit at the same table
and hash out their differences. This is the first time the
residents have been invited to work with the developer to
find a solution to their concerns.
No details of the negotiations have been worked out as
of this time. Stay tuned as news develops on this story.
Tax-Free Weekend
August 5-7
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds shoppers
the annual sales tax holiday is scheduled for this Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5 – 7.
The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school
supplies and backpacks priced for less than $100 from
sales tax, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they
spend during the weekend.
Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be
purchased tax-free can be found on the Comptroller’s
website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.
This year, shoppers will save an estimated $92 million
in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday,
which has been an annual event since 1999.
Starting this year, all Katy ISD students, both new
and returning, will be using InfoSnap to register online
for the 2016-2017 school year. New student registration
opened on Monday, July 18th. Returning students can
update their information starting Monday, Aug. 8th. Visit
www.katyisd.org/registrationfor more info and be sure to
share with fellow Katy ISD parents.

The Katy Cruisers Gold ’07 is a highly competitive select softball team made up of
girls born in 2007 and 2008 from all over the State of Texas. These girls had to battle
back through seven loser bracket games on the final two days of the tournament in win
or go home fashion.
These girls proved that they are the undisputed #1 8U team in the nation. Teams
from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Texas were
all present and had a shot at the title. Throughout the year it was a general consensus
that there was one tournament that really mattered in 8U and if you wanted a shot at
the title, you'd have to meet at the beach. The Katy Cruisers Gold '07 had one goal in
mind...mission accomplished.

Infectious Enthusiasm, Beliefs, and
Respect for Coaches and Players Are
Making a Difference in Just Three Years
Coach Tony Tademy came to Tompkins High School
as its first Athletic Director/Varsity Head Football Coach
in 2013. Before Tompkins Tademy was an assistant
football coach for Duncanville High School in 2012.
Prior to Duncanville he served as the linebacker coach
for seven years at Texas Christian University. With more
than 27 years of high school and collegiate coaching
experience, Tademy’s record includes one high school
state championship, a 2010 Rose Bowl win and six
additional college Bowl wins.
In two short years the Falcons have flexed their athletic
wings. The Lady Falcons soccer team made the playoffs
in their second season, sweeping through the first two
rounds, with their biggest win over Westside, district 206A runner up. The Falcon varsity football team sampled
6A football and went 0-10 fielding only 35 players. Its
second season, last year, the Falcon’s turned some heads
with wins over Seven Lakes, Terry and Mayde Creek.
This year the Falcons have a reported 300 plus players
ready to begin football practice.
Tademy’s infectious enthusiasm, beliefs, and respect
for his coaches and players are making a difference in
just three years.
He is originally from Jacksonville, Ark, where he
played linebacker for the Jacksonvile Titans. “We won
the first state championship my senior year,” recalls
Tademy. After graduation he played for the Louisiana
Tech Bulldogs.
“I remember when I was playing college football, and
it was time to get in the real world. The pros didn’t want
me. Coach (Dimeco) Childress at East Tennessee State
asked me if I ever thought about being a college football
coach. No I hadn’t, but I knew I had to do something in
life. I couldn’t just go home and lay around the house.
After a 24 hour wait, Tademy decided he wanted to be
a coach, and landed an assistant job at Virginia Military
Academy. After several other coaching stops, he landed
the linebackers coaching job at TCU. While there he was
with the Horn Frog team that was ranked number 5 in
the nation, and later when the TCU played in the Rose
Bowl.
“When I was in college (TCU) it was 100 percent
business. It was about winning football games. My goal
as the linebacker coach was to be the best coach I could
be, to do my job, not have any problems in my room, and
to be the best assistant coach the head coach could want.
I recruited my area. I was close to my football players.
They were like my sons.”
“We played in the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State. They
beat us and we were 12-1. We coaches were disappointed
that we lost, but we were 12-1, a dog gone good year. We

US Olympic Table Tennis Team Makes a Stop in Katy
Team hopes to win first US gold medal ever in Table Tennis
By Tom Behrens
Going into this year’s Olympics the USA has never medaled in the badminton, handball, rhythmic
gymnastics, table tennis and trampoline. This year in Rio, members of the U.S. table tennis team—Tim
Wang, Kanak Jha, Yijun Feng, Yue Wu, Lily Zhang and Jiaqu Zheng—hope to be the first table tennis
medalists for the U.S. The six athletes were in Katy recently meeting the public and signing autographs
at the Houston International Table Tennis Academy.
Tim Wang, has been to the Olympics in 2012 and 2016, and is a three time National Champion. Jha
is the 2016 National Champion, ranked No. 272 in the world, and also the youngest male Olympian
in the history of the Games. He is 16 years old. Yijun Feng, is the 2015 National Champion and 2016
North American Champion. Yue Wu is a 2015 Pan American Gold Medalist (singles and team) and
2016 North American Champion.
Lily Zhang is a three time National Champion, 2016 National Champion Bronze Medalist, a 2014
Youth Olympic Games Bronze Medalist, a 2014 World Junior Championships, 2015 Pan American
Gold Medalist (team), and 2015 Pan American Bronze Medalist (singles).
Jiaqi Zhen is the 2015 National Champion and 2012 National Collegiate Table Tennis Champion.
Massimo Costantini, the U.S. table tennis coach has been coaching table tennis for almost a quarter
of a century. He has been coaching in the United States for the last six years. He is originally from
Italy.
“Three of the athletes are from California, one from Houston, one from New York, and one from
Atlanta,” explained Costantini. Tim Wang is from Houston, and just recently opened Houston Intl
Table Tennis Academy (www.facebook.com/HITableTennis/). “They all qualified for the Olympics
through two qualifiers, the U.S. Trials, held in Greensboro, NC and the North American Trials, which
was held in Toronto.”
In Rio the players will compete in men’s and women’s singles and men’s and women’s team
competition. “People think of table tennis as an individual sport,” said Gordon Kaye, CEO of USA
Table Tennis. “We are trying to take a team approach as we get ready for the Olympics. We spend time
together at training camps and different fundraisers.” Prior to leaving for Rio, the team has traveled
across the US demonstrating their skills in matches and signing autographs.
Tim Wang says his table tennis strength is his backhand shots. “The ball can travel up to 100 mph
going back and forth between the players. You can control the spin and speed just like in regular tennis.
There are so many variables that you can put on the ball.”
Yijun Feng, Atlanta, GA, will be attending the University of Georgia after he returns from the
Olympics. He says his strength is also in his backhand and his ‘unique serve and playing style.’ He
prefers the Pencil Hold over the Shake Hand grip.

Wang, Kanak Jha, Yijun Feng, Yue Wu, Lily Zhang and Jiaqu Zheng) were at
the official opening of the Houston Intl Table Tennis Academy. The Academy
is located in Katy (www.facebook.com/HITableTennis/). Several hundred
people were present for the table tennis demonstrations and to meet the
Olympians. Photo Credit Tom Behrens.
In the Pencil the player’s thumb and index finger are wrapped around the front of the racket, while
your other three fingers provide support on the flip side. Users of the method say this grip gives the most
precise control of the racket angle, and having all five fingers involved near the racket surface provides
a closer sense of touch with the point of contact.
Lily Zhang of Milpitas, CA, says she started playing table tennis when she was around 7-8 years old,
as did all the other members of the team. She won a bronze medal in the Youth Olympics in Nanjing,
China, 2014.
“The opening ceremonies at the games is a huge honor,” said Wang, “walking into the stadium with
other athletes from our country, and other athletes from other countries—the best of the best of the
entire world—a huge, huge honor.”
Olympic Table Tennis matches begin Aug. 6.

Katy Contemporary Arts Museum Announces
Fundraising Efforts for New Building in Katy

through September 4th. Photo by Srini Sundarrajan.
Ana Villaronga-Roman, founder of
the Katy Contemporary Arts Museum
(KCAM) recently announced plans for
a new building. After negotiations for
purchasing the historic building that
houses the three year old museum broke
down, it became necessary to seek
other options. The lease on the former
lumberyard building runs out at the end
of 2017.
Fortunately for Katy, property has been
leased at Avenue A and George Bush Drive
next door to Multiplicity, with construction
expected to start before next spring. Filo
Castore, principal of DLR Group in
Houston and the architect chosen for the
project says, “DLR Group is thrilled to be
part of the team that will bring the KCAM
vision to reality. KCAM is more than an
art venue. It will be a regional catalyst
that will elevate the human experience
through art, design, collaborations and
community dialogues.”
The new building will be modular in
design. It is a new concept and will give
the museum the flexibility it needs to a to
provide a unique environment complete
with roof garden, the first in Texas, which
could be used for hosting special events.
“A 20-year lease on the land will ensure
that KCAM can grow into a world-class
museum”, said Kevin Douglas West,
KCAM Board of Directors President. The
community is invited to put their names
on the Wall of Heroes, a special wall
for donors to be honored. The historic
building that currently houses Fort Bend’s
only art museum, if a purchase agreement
can be negotiated, would be used for a
community gallery, art classes, workshops
and studios for local artists.
