Spring 2005
Katy ARTreach brings the therapeutic arts and art-related activities to
the Krause Childrens Residential Treatment Center.
T
he Krause Center is a residential treatment facility in Katy.
It is home to 60 children ages 1117. These children come from all
over Texas and are placed here
by Childrens Protective Services
(CPS) or the juvenile justice system. The children receive treatment
for a range of behavioral or emotional issues stemming from the effects of physical and sexual abuse,
abandonment and neglect. The
center provides individual therapy
and counseling as well as an integrated year-round educational program provided by Trinity Charter
School. These programs are designed to help these children ease
back into society with the goal of re-entering the public school system once they return to their families, or are placed in new foster
care homes.
Katy ARTreach is supporting the centers Expanding
Horizons Program. This
program is designed, as the
name implies, to expand a
childs horizons, by providing
a variety of creative activities
the children would not otherwise experience. Katy ARTreach is Expanding Horizons
through Art by bringing in
visual art, drama, music and
dance to the center.
Katy ARTreach brings in educational and entrepreneurial
art programs that teach valuable business concepts and technical skills in silk screening, printmaking, computer graphics, mural painting and ceramics. The program also incorporates weekend and after-school activities special
events and inspirational speakers.
On The Go!
Another aspect of the Expanding Horizons Program includes
field trips to restaurants, museums and Katy area businesses.
The program relies on generous volunteers and in-kind donations of time and services.
Resources are being developed through Katy ARTreach
and Lutheran Social Services
with support from the Krause
Centers Volunteer Organization (KVO). To volunteer or

Services Announces
Educational Partnership
with the Trinity
Charter School and
Katy ARTreach
L
utheran Social Services is partnering with Trinity Charter School
and Katy ARTreach to provide
high quality educational services
to the children at the Krause Childrens Residential Treatment Center
and the other three LSS treatment
centers in Texas. Each year the
treatment centers serve nearly 550
children with severe emotional and
behavioral problems, most stemming from past abuse and neglect.
The majority of the children are
refereed to the treatment center
from the child welfare and juvenile
systems.
Often children enter the Krause
Center one to three grade levels
behind. Several reasons contribute
to this situation; they come from
abusive and/or neglectful homes where education was not a priority. They have
not been encouraged to attend school, much less study their homework. Also as
the child welfare system investigates and addresses the abuse and neglect they
have suffered, the children are uprooted from their homes and moved to various
foster care settings before they are admitted to the center. That means they have
changed schools several times, often in the middle of the semester.
LSS believes a quality educational experience is integral to the overall treatment of the children. With year round school, individualized learning programs
complemented with one-on-one tutoring and self-paced academic software. The
arts are an important part of this program. LSS expects childrens academic performance to improve one or two grade levels before they are discharged from the
centers. This will better prepare them to succeed when they attend public schools
after placed in foster homes or returned to their families.
Katy ARTreach is partnering with LSS to develop the Krause Centers Arts in
Education program through the Trinity Charter Schools Fine Arts Department.

A Work of Heart
Giving Back The children of the Krause
Center worked together to create an
original work of art that they donated to
the Katy Heart Association. The painting
raised $1500.00 to help fight heart disease in children.
The Children at the Krause Center Experience Summer Camp
For the first time since the Krause Center opened in Katy 1997, the children living here
were treated to an experience most kids coming from happier backgrounds often take for
granted: Summer Camp!
Summer Camp at Krause found the children immersed in Art, Drama, Dance and Creative
Writing workshops and Bible Studies, as well as Basketball and Swimming activities, for
the entire month of July. These activities are components of the Krause Centers Expanding
Horizons Program.
The camp was organized by Katy ARTreach and the Krause Volunteer Organization (KVO).
Numerous other organizations in Katy played key roles in helping to provide a wonderful
experience for these special children in need. The Second Baptist Church of Katy organized
the bible studies, and the Ken Lay YMCA provided the lifeguards and swimming lessons,
as well as the basketball and sports activities. National Charities League Azalea Chapter
brought in games and yoga classes. The Cinco Ranch Area Art League (CRAAL) provided
teaching support, and the Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center helped to make the summer extra special by issuing three full scholarships to theater arts camp at their Houston
Community College location at Katy Mills Mall.

Katy ARTreach Honors Volunteers with
Presidents Volunteer Service Award
Award is a Prestigious National Honor for Volunteer Service
Presidents Call to Service Award
Honoring Americans Who Make a Difference by Volunteering
Every day, millions of Americans
volunteer, using their time, talents,
and compassion to make a difference
in the lives of others. By mentoring a
child, caring for an elderly neighbor,
teaching someone to draw or read,
or bringing food and clothes to those
who need them, Americans are helping to foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility for generations to come. It is through these
acts of kindness and decency that we
are able to demonstrate the true character and compassion of our country.
Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service to others. It encourages
a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make volunteering a
central part of their lives. The Presidents Volunteer Service Award is a Presidential recognition program for Americans of all ages, who contribute a significant amount of time
to volunteer service. The program recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have
achieved a certain standard measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month
period.
Established in 2003, the Award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups
and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering. As one of hundreds of Certifying
Organizations participating in the Award program, Katy ARTreach offers the award to recognize the outstanding achievements of its volunteers.
Katy ARTreach is currently accepting nominations for the Presidents Volunteer Service
Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunteer service. Last years recipients
include Diane Covert, Terri Bieber, Kim Ginn, Rhonda Murphy, Joni Speegle and the National Charities League Azalea Chapter. During the course of one year, these volunteers
donated a combined total of 6000 hours to Katy ARTreach and community organizations
including: Katyville Medical Care Center, Katy Christian Ministries Domestic Abuse Center, The Pregnancy Help Center, K.I.S.D. KEYS Mentoring Program and the Krause Childrens Residential Treatment Center.
Nominations for the prestigious award are accepted via email to [email protected].
Individual or groups may apply.

Encouraging Youth towards Success
Katy ARTreach mentors also work with children on the brink of
success as part of the Katy I.S.D. KEYS Program (Keep Encouraging Youth towards Success). These ARTreach programs utilize
successful art experiences, exhibitions and awards as a way to
build self-confidence and self-esteem in preschool and elementary
aged children.
Katy ARTreach will be expanding its Mentoring through Art program serving children at risk through the K.I.S.D. Mayde Creek
KEYS Program to include Junior High beginning fall 2005.
