CLUB CLOSURE
The Club will be closed
August 1 - 8
Reopening August 9.
The Clubhouse, driving
range, card rooms, locker
rooms and some entry
points will be closed.
The Fitness Center,
Tennis Center and
Golf Course will
remain open.
May is here, and it is officially the off season at Gleneagles!
The off season is an enjoyable time of year for the members
that includes many events and activities, but also includes some
quiet time to unwind after a jam-packed season. The off season
also means reduced guest fees for golf, the opportunity to
enjoy other local clubs through our reciprocal golf and dining
programs, summer leagues, and lots of sunshine.
As in previous summers, the club will be closing from August
1 to August 8 for annual maintenance. This week-long club
closure allows our staff to complete important maintenance
projects that would otherwise create a significant impact to
member services. Members will receive information in an
upcoming club statement regarding available member services
for that week.
The summer operating schedule begins May 1 with lunch
served daily and dinner offered on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
and select Tuesday and Saturday evenings. The golf courses,
Tennis Center, and Fitness Center will offer a full operating
schedule throughout the summer. There will be events held
at the club to celebrate every summer holiday this year, from
Mother’s Day to Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Fourth of July,
Labor Day, Halloween and more.
The Board of Governors and Management team is
continuing to refine the proposed Phase II Healthy Lifestyle
renovation concept. Members will begin receiving additional
information, including a comprehensive member brochure, in
coming months.
We send our best wishes for an enjoyable and healthy
summer! See you around the Club!
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President
Kraig Spina, General Manager
Full details will be
mailed with your
statement soon.

Food for thought...
As we shift into the off season gear, it must be mentioned again
Nick Jolly
that the past season has been a tremendous success and many
assistant
thanks go out to all of the members for the terrific support at all of general manager
the events. We are looking forward to a wonderful off season that
we know will be just as successful.
Pub Night is one of your favorites and it will be offered twice in the Grille this month
on the 3rd and the 15th. Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 8, so we invite you to join us
for a special a la carte dinner to celebrate the lovely ladies in your family. Don’t forget to
join us in the Lounge for complimentary live music on the 11th and 25th!
Memorial Day festivities begin on Saturday, May 28 with a cocktail party and dancing
to the sounds of Top Notch Trio, and on Monday, May 30 we will have a steak cookout
with all the trimmings.
I am sure most of you have had the pleasure of meeting our new Executive Chef
Jeffrey Terentieff. It is truly an exciting time in Food and Beverage for Gleneagles
Country Club with many changes in store for you. This summer, Chef will be hosting
our Cooking Demos with two being held this month: May 3 and May 17. The first one
features Healthy Lifestyle choices and the second one is for those of you that enjoy
entertaining. It will give you many ideas for small plates for parties. They will be held
at 2:00 pm in the back of the Waterfall Room. Reservations will open two weeks prior
with limited space available.
Our International staff members will soon be departing for the season. Once again,
they have done an outstanding job complementing our wonderful full-time staff who
will continue to take care of you through the summer months.
Please be sure to make reservations for all your evening dining so that we can staff
accordingly in order to provide the best service possible in the dining room. Keep in
mind that if we do not have 50 reservations 48 hours prior, it is our policy to cancel
dinner. The summer dress code starts May 1, please refer to page 9 for details.
Once again, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for your continued
support through the season and wish everyone a safe and healthy summer.
Cheers!

Thank you to our golf members for such a special season!
From meeting many new members to seeing new winners in
events and watching members making new friends, it has been
one to remember! We hope that those members who are leaving
have a safe and healthy summer.
As the summer approaches, the members who are staying
at the club will be getting ready for some great times playing
in events such as South County, Summer Swingers, South Palm
Ladies and the Challenge Cup.
Thank you to all of our Golf Committee members for
their efforts this season, it does make a big difference. The
maintenance crew will be busy doing their summer maintenance
programs which will get the golf courses ready for next season.
Please call any of the golf professionals if you have any

PRO GOLF TIP
SUMMER GOLF
As we move into the summer, we
all know that it is important to stay
hydrated and eat a proper balanced
breakfast. It is also a good idea to
bring some snacks with you to make
sure you have energy throughout
the round. Make sure you have a
wet towel or stop to pick up a cold
towel, it really helps! A floppy hat to
cover your ears and the back of the
neck as well as proper sunscreen for
the day as well. If you wear a glove,
always have a backup and rotate
them throughout the round to
extend the life of the glove. – Joe

initiated the inclusion of men and
women of all abilities into his group
and is very helpful in welcoming these

volunteers his time to the appreciation
of many players.

What a year at Tennis! The courts have never been as full with
events and social play as this year. Many league teams had banner
years and the social events where booked to capacity.
Pickleball continues to make a splash on the courts with more
and more players becoming hooked on this fun and social game.
Over 100 members have participated in the Pickleball
Orientations the last few weeks and found that after 20 minutes
of guidance, they were ready to play a game.
Any tennis members who have not taken part in previous
orientations and would like to explore Pickleball are welcome to
call the Tennis Pro Shop to schedule a personal orientation with
Tennis & Fitness Director, Mike Puc. Open Pickleball play for all

It was a great year in league tennis with fun and excitement for all. Exceptional

FITNESS
Highlights of a Great Season!
Your Gleneagles Fitness Center launched a wide variety of
new programs during the past season to promote a healthy
lifestyle among our members, and we want to re-cap a few of
the highlights.
• We brought two new people on board to enhance our
Healthy Lifestyle initiative. Maureen Buchbinder, our nutrition
consultant, presented a Nutrition Awareness workshop with
over 85 members in attendance. On five different occasions
Maureen greeted members at our restaurant buffet to offer
KAREN MIKUS
advice on healthy selections from our buffet. Maureen led the
fitness supervisor
‘Weight Loss for your healthy life’ club for eight weeks. Lillian
Craigs-Dino, dietician consultant, held monthly workshops on
nutrition as it effects your health, including your immune system and weight loss.
Many of you attended Lillian’s exceptional workshops.
•
•
We took the Fitness Center outdoors with our moonlight walk and yoga by
moonlight. Yoga mats were placed on the putting green in front of the waterfall,
the final touch – battery operated candles between mats. A moonlight walk was an
alternative choice for the evening. With glow sticks and the moonlight to guide
the way, members strolled gate to gate. We are happy to report the sprinklers did
not go off during the activities.
Our first ever 5K Healthy Heart run/walk race had more than 90 members in
attendance. A big thank you to all our volunteers. After the race, members met
back at the pool deck for refreshments. After the final race tally, 30 members in
six age categories received trophies.

We organized a visit to Swank Table, a farm-to-table dining extravaganza where
members traveled by charter bus to an organic farm to enjoy a dinner prepared
from local ingredients by famous chefs from area restaurants.
•
And we launched our Healthy Lifestyle Newsletter, which has been published 3
times this season. We’ve had so many wonderful comments about it, and we look
forward to many more issues to come. The next two issues will deliver in May and
August.
•
For Fun and as a way to bring all the events together, the Fitness Center held a
monthly Bingo contest. Each winner of the monthly drawing won a $75.00 gift
card.

GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB
Gleneagles Participating in
2016 CMAA Marathon Golf
Gleneagles Country Club is proud to be participating in
Marathon Golf, a unique event hosted by our local chapter
of the Club Manager’s Association of America where local
country clubs unite to raise funds for local charities including
Toys for Tots, The Special Olympics, SOS Children’s Villages,
The George Snow Scholarship Fund, The Unicorn Children’s
Foundation, Florence Fuller Child Development Centers, The
First Tee Palm Beach/Treasure Coast and Place of Hope. The
concept is simple: Golfers team up to play as many holes as
possible in one day, having generated pledges for each hole
played.
The Gleneagles team is being organized by Assistant Director
of Food & Beverage Regan Samaniego and will also include
Executive Chef Jeff Terentieff, Head Golf Professional Paul
Crespo and Assistant Golf Professional Matt Grobstein.
Members can participate by making a per hole pledge, or
a flat donation. 100% of all proceeds are donated to CMAA
Charities. Members who make a per hole pledge of $1.00 or
more will be entered into a drawing for incredible prizes.
The team will be teeing off on our very own golf courses
on May 29. Be sure to check the club’s Facebook Page for live
tracking.
The last day to make a per hole pledge is May 27. Donations
can be billed to your member account. Pick up a pledge form at
the Concierge Desk!

ACTIVITIES
April concluded the Computer
Club season after a very busy exciting
year which had lots of new “how-to”
workshops and Open Meeting programs.
Hopefully you attended one or more and
as a result now find your digital experience that much more satisfying.
We learned how to sell our “surplus” stuff on eBay and trade-in our digital devices
for the newest ones at a modest cost. We explored the “World Is Totally Mobile - Are
You?” and gave away “selfie sticks” at the Lifestyle Expo after showing you how to use
one. Not to be outdone, Gleneagles C.C. bought a drone and took a “selfie” of the
Pickleball opening (April cover) from at least 100 feet in the air. Ours was only five foot
but we can’t all own a Drone. That’s it… we’re going to make a fortune selling Drones
for “selfies.” Maybe the new Gleneagles RC Flying Club can help?
We continue to have Help Days on the first Tuesday and third Monday of each
month, so visit our website and make an appointment. You’ll get some answers and
be glad you did.
As the summer approaches, a few reminders about security! Never give personal
information, user names or passwords to anyone unless you know exactly who you’re
dealing with. Microsoft does not call you about your computer having problems… just
hang up! Public spaces, like coffee shops, malls, our Lomond Hills or Strathearn open
computers, are not the place for you to do sensitive personal things that require your
passwords or other personal information. Others may be “listening.”
Watch the Computer Club website for current information and have a healthy
summer. See you in the fall. http://gleneaglescomputer.org.

At the Bridge Table by marty tolep
Many declarers have a natural urge to win tricks as cheaply as
possible, but this is not always the right policy. This hand from a
recent team game illustrates my point (see box at right).
At both tables South played in three no trump and received
the lead of the five of hearts (4th best). The three was played
from dummy, East produced the eight and at one table South
won a cheap trick with the nine. The jack of clubs was allowed
to win the next trick. West took his ace of clubs on the second
round and played the two of spades to the jack and king.
Seeking a way into dummy, South tried the effect of leading
the jack of diamonds but there were no takers. On the next
round of diamonds East captured dummy’s queen with the king
and returned a heart. South then found he was unable to make
more than seven tricks.
Readers of bridge books or those taking bridge lessons will
have realized that South should have won the first trick with
the ace of hearts in order to preserve a later entry into dummy
for the long clubs. At the other table, South was not so greedy.
He won the heart lead with the ace, knocked out the ace of
clubs, won the spade switch and played another heart. West was
unable to deny him access to dummy and the declarer had ten
tricks without needing to risk the diamond finesse.
Bottom Line: Don’t be miserly with your high cards. A cheap
trick is no bargain if it denies you a later entry.
*The Rule of Eleven: 11-5 (4th best) = number of card higher
than five in dummy, in declarer and the other opponent’s hand.
As the season draws to a close, I wish our snowbird neighbors
and friends a safe journey home and my best wishes for a healthy
and joyous summer. To year-rounders, see you at the tables.

GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB
First and foremost, thank you to the entire membership for such an
overwhelmingly warm welcome here at Gleneagles! I’ve had the privilege of
meeting many of you during my first few weeks here and I truly appreciate all
the kind words. I look forward to spending as much time as possible in hopes
of meeting each and every one of you.
As season has come to a close, my staff and I look forward to using this
slower time to really focus on enhancing the Gleneagles Food & Beverage
operation throughout the summer and into next season. I’ve made some
gradual changes to all three lunch menus as well as dinner and the bar bites
in an attempt to not only excite the members for what’s to come, but also
to create a better culinary “culture” within the kitchen. To be able to make
this process successful, as I challenge my staff each and every day, I ask the
same of you! Challenge yourself and your family or guests to try new things!
Take the time to read through the menus and see what fantastic dishes our
team has created. These properly created, planned and executed meals are
professionally put together with taste, texture, and visual appeal all in mind
and are meant to be enjoyed that specific way. There will always be a proper
balance between these items and traditional club fare however I challenge
you to let me expand the way you think about country club food!
As I continue to work with our management team here at Gleneagles, I
look forward to working with you as well. Comments, concerns, and requests
are always welcome and I thank you again for already making me feel like part
of the family.
Bon appetit!

members to experience our club as well. A copy of the current reciprocal list
for both dining and golf will be available at the Concierge desk. We have a few
new additions this year, so be sure to check them out!
