Coast Newsletter - Coast Volleyball San Diego
August, 2009 Volume 4 Next month Vol 5 College preview NCAA Coast Coast Newsletter Samantha Cash is Big Money at the High Performance Championships! Samantha “Sami” Cash of Canyon Crest Academy and Coast 17‐1 helps her Youth National Red team to win it all. The High Performance (HP) Champion‐
ship is a national team program that as‐
sembles US teams of various age levels with the nation’s best players and brings in foreign national teams to compete on American soil. This year the HP champion‐
ships were in late July in Fort Lauderdale, FL and included national all‐star teams from Italy, Puerto Rico, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. Sami’s youth team (16s) played up a division competing in the junior age division (18s) and went unde‐
feated for the entire tournament. The USA Youth Red went 6‐0 in pool play and went through the semis without dropping a set. After defeating Canada in five hard fought games several of the USA team players were interviewed. Virginia Common Wealth University bound Ciara Brown was the starting setter for USA Red and said “Sami was fantastic…
she worked hard and put herself in the offense on every play. She carried the load and put constant pressure on our opponents.” Summer Local Program is a Hit! In the program’s first year both Coast teams go undefeated at their first tour‐
nament. 16 Rob‐‐ The High School Summer Local season has been a great four‐weeks of skill development, team training and fun! “In this short amount of time our team was able to learn a 6‐2 offense and execute it during their first tourna‐
ment in which they were undefeated. We are currently learning two types of defenses and are eager to implement them in our final tournament.” ‐‐Rob Lisama 14 Tom‐‐ “The Coast 12's Summer Local team competed in their first tour‐
nament at Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club (SVVC). We played San Diego VBC and SVVC in our pool. With only three teams in our pool, each match consisted of three games played to 25. Our playing schedule required us to play six games back‐to‐back. Our team rose to the challenge, got hot, and won all six games. This was even more special because this was the first organized tour‐
nament for several of our team’s players. We had a great time.” ‐‐Tom Braski Player of the Month: Daniela DeKervor Daniela DeKervor of 15‐
Davis is August’s Player of the Month. Daniela, who will be a sophomore in the fall at La Jolla High School, has par‐
ticipated in several beach workouts and six Coast camps. One coach com‐
mented, “This kid has com‐
mitted to being great! No one has worked harder this summer!” Back to School Tryout Camps Fall Local Team “Want to play on a club team this Fall?” Coast Volleyball has great team pro‐
