The International School of the Algarve awarded by Portimão’s town
hall
The Sports Club of the International School of the
Algarve has been presented with an award by the local
town hall of Portimão for its constant contributions to
the development and promotion of sports in the region.
A special reward was attributed to Mr. Jorge Amador, a
teacher at the International School of the Algarve for
his dedication and constant effort in the promoting of
sports.
Mr. Amador humbly attributes this merit to the support
structure offered by the school, which makes these sort
of activities possible and firmly believes that without
this support, such results would be impossible to
achieve.
A shining example of this success is Carolina Ferreira
who was also awarded with a prize by the local
authority for having gained more than 50 national and
international titles for roller speed skating.
The 15 year old athlete has been a student at the
International School of the Algarve since pre-primary
and began her skating career at the school when she
was only 6 years of age. The School sports club
(CDEIA) has supported and nurtured this talent since.
The International of the Algarve
teaches students good health habits
The school’s nurse is teaching students how to be
careful about their hands’ hygiene, mainly before
meals.
Filipa Magalhães showed the effect of hand cleaning
absence on health and well-being of people by using
and infrared bulb and mentioned some problems,
caused by not washing hands properly such as, gastric,
breathing, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing and the flu.
More initiatives to improve the pupils’ health are
taking place throughout the year.

The International School of the Algarve students on the International
Mathematical Olympiad
The thirty-third edition of the International
Mathematical Olympiad held in Portugal, is taking place
on this school year of 2014/2015.
Three students from the International School of the
Algarve have been selected to be part of this
competition, they are, Vasco Escudeiro, year six, junior
category, Leonardo Bonelli, year nine, A category and
Marcos Pessegueiro, year twelve, B category.
This event, annually organized by the Portuguese
Mathematical Society, is directed to the students of the
second and third cycles of the basic education, and also
for the ones attending the secondary level.
The mathematical exercises appeal to the quality of
reasoning, creativity, and imagination of the students,
having logical rigor, clarity of exposure and elegance on
the resolution of problems, as important factors to
determine the qualifications.
The intellectual development inherent to the student’s
age, and the maturity that resulted from further
implementation of matters, divides the competition in
two levels, A and B.
There is, also, another category, called “Pré Olimpíada” for the students attending the year seven.
As the regulation book refers, one of the main
objectives is to determine premature vocation to
mathematics and science.
Most of the previous winners have followed successful
careers all over the world.

Third term The Spring Sports Festival in Carcavelos, includes girls football and boys basketball, where the Chess
School also take part.
During this term, tracking and other outdoor will take place at the natural reserve of Cazorla.
Meanwhile the national school sports championship will be taking place.
You can have fun without hurting
yourself
The International School of the Algarve nurse Filipa
Magalhães set out with one objective this morning. To
educate and inform students about risk prevention
and to promote healthier life habits.
This initiative was aimed at teaching students to have
a defensive attitude toward unnecessary accidents,
taking into account that most accidents occur
between infancy and the adolescent years.
Using fun and games within a safe environment,
children were made aware of the importance of
accident prevention whilst encouraging vital skills
which could prevent future casualties.

Year 12 students produce an educational video about an important health
issue
The International School of the Algarve’s year 12
class has produced a video showing the problems
caused by the ever growing and common disease,
diabetes.
The project was produced as an entry to the
“Ciência em cena” competition promoted by the
Calouste Gulbenkian foundation to encourage
students to inform colleagues, parents, friends and
teachers about the problems caused by the disease.
The idea to participate originated at the school as
part of its mission to educate students on how to
lead a healthy life-style.
“Ciência em cena” , was launched by “ Maratona da
Saúde” and “Gulbenkian Descobrir” as a
competition to involve students in promoting ideas
about health and science.

From the yellow belt rank to the orange (7ºKYU):
Henry Santos, Henrique Bressan e Pedro Paraíso.
All the students achieved their goals, and were
congratulated for their technique, persistence and
discipline during the examination.
Karate originated in India, and then later evolved in China approximately 12 centuries ago, and KYU is a
Japanese term used in martial arts to define various levels of experience. The colours and the meanings change
depending on the style being used.
Primary School students visit Lisbon
Primary school science students from the International
School of the Algarve recently went on a field trip to
Lisbon.
The pupils visited the “pavilhão do conhecimento”
where they conducted experiments with electric
circuits, magnetism and optical illusion, putting what
they learned during school activities into practice.
The trip included a guided visit to Lisbon’s Oceanarium
where details of all the species on exhibition were
explained as well as interesting facts about the animals.

Students, teachers and parents celebrate Carnival
Maintaining tradition at this time of the year, the International School of the Algarve brings parents, teachers and
students together to celebrate Carnival.
The event was attended by the entire school community, the national and international sections; students
paraded and presented several themed choreographies of music, “sevilhanas” (Spanish local dancing), movie
theme songs, theatre and cinema.
After the parade, a group of 9th grade students presented a special version of Olympus: Council of the Gods,
(Symbolising the importance of Portugal’s trip to India).
A festive day which included various activities including “EIA’s got talent”, Zumba classes with ex-student

Science during Carnival
Feelings and expressions
The Science Department of the International
School of the Algarve celebrated the 2015 Carnival
differently this year by conducting experiments to
attract and motivate students to learn and
understand chemical and physical reactions.
Filipa Magalhães, International School of the Algarve’s
nurse has been conducting a social exercise where
students are encouraged to value sentimental expressions.
The aim is for students to value the effects of feelings and
develop personal expression.

will include students of different ages and various classes.
The aim of the department was to combine science
with creativity.
Students created designs with shaving foam and
food colouring, testing the concepts of
hydrophobic and hydrophilic substances.
In another experiment, a glove was brought to life,
observing the reaction between vinegar and baking
soda.
The year 7 students did various experiments to prove
whether the effects of the reactions were chemical or
physical.

Happy Chinese New Year
Good nutrition for a healthy living
Pre-school students of the International School of the Algarve
celebrated the Chinese New Year today with various activities.
A paper lamp was created as a symbol of ancient Chinese
culture. Our little students showed great interest and attention
during the construction of this iconic Chinese symbol.
The Chinese New Year is a reference to many eastern
countries that follow the traditional calendar, different from
the one followed by the west. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar
and takes into account the position of the sun and the moon
phases. The Chinese New Year begins on the night where the
new moon is closest to the day when the sun passes the
fifteenth degree of Aquarius.
Chinese New Year relates every New Year to one of twelve
different animals. These are said to have accepted Buddha’s call
for a meeting. The twelve which attended, as gratitude, were
turned into Chinese astrology signs by the religious teacher.
This is the year of the Goat.
Eating habits play a key role in growth, development and health of children, preventing diseases related to poor
diet, like obesity among others.
Good nutrition during different stages of child growth (childhood, preadolescence and adolescence) helps to
maintain optimal health, increasing learning abilities and contributing to better school performance. Creating
a healthy eating habit at these early stages, will make it easier to follow through into adulthood.
The International School of the Algarve focusses on healthy eating, following rules and appropriate parameters
to provide full meals with a variety of ingredients from all food groups, every day of the week.
A strong emphasis on physical education shows the schools concern for the physical and intellectual balance of
students.
The school aims to set a good example, showing that meals can be both tasty and healthy. The quality of food
eaten at school has a huge impact on health and well-being, considering that young people spend so much of
their time at school where a substantial amount of their diet is consumed.

Measuring the quality of air
Studying the human body
Science students of the International School of the
Algarve dissected a pig’s heart during a practical
exercise. This helped students understand how the
organ functions, as it is similar to that of a human being.
The human heart is muscular and roughly the size of a
large fist. The atria has a smooth inner wall. The
muscular wall of the ventricles is connected by chordae
to atrioventricular valves and is wrinkled in
appearance.
The heart acts as a double pump, with the left side
sending blood to the entire body and the right to the
lungs by contracting and relaxing the atria and
The purpose of today’s science class of the ventricles. The period of ventricular contraction of the

the school. Students observed how lichens being
present in trees can be indicators of a low level of
pollution in the atmosphere. Lichens are organisms
made up of both a fungus and an algae, these are called
biomarkers and can be found on walls, rocks, tree
trunks and considered a good sign of the quality of air.
In less developed countries where technology is less
accessible, the abundance of lichens serve as indicators
of the quality of the surrounding atmosphere. The
students concluded that by the amount of these
organisms presented on trees around the school, the
quality of air they breathing is good.
My favourite pizza
Year 5 students of the International School of the Algarve designed
their own pizza brand, creating their own logos and advertising posters.
This was followed by making a pizza, with students choosing their own
ingredients and toppings.

Commemorating International
Mother Language Day
Carnival celebration in Almancil
The International School of the Algarve recently
celebrated International Mother Language Day,
commemorated on the 21st of February.
The students presented themselves in their own
mother tongues and talked about events and
curiosities of their cultures of origin, with a
questions and answers session in the end with other
participants. The initiative is intended to value the
various nationalities present in the school.
The International Mother Language Day was
proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 and has its origin in
the Language Movement Day which is celebrated in
Bangladesh since 1952, when a group of students
demonstrated for recognition of their language
“Bengali”. They became victims of police brutality
and dozens of young people lost their lives defending
their mother tongue.
Students, parents and teachers also gathered to celebrate Carnival at the International School of the Algarve,
Almancil site.
The joyous day was enjoyed by children of all ages and
even included a pancake race.
Reading Club in English
The celebration aims to promote multilingualism
and cultural diversity in a world where there are
approximately 6000 languages, many of which are
becoming unknown. To counter this trend,
UNESCO promotes learning of native languages as a
way to fight illiteracy.
With approximately 280 million speakers,
Portuguese is the fifth most spoken language in the
world and is not at risk. It is the third most used in
the Western Hemisphere and the most widely
spoken in the southern half of planet earth.
On the other hand, English is the third most spoken
language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and
Castilian (commonly known as Spanish).
Recent estimates conclude that English as a second
language is used by 470 million to a billion people.
The Year 1 and Year 2 children from the national
section have had the opportunity to read English books
since the middle of the first term.
This activity promotes the development of their pronunciation recognising special sounds in print and it also
extends their vocabulary.
It is a weekly reading session at lunch time with Ms.
Costa and students Claudia Strydom and Joanna Connolly.
