Innovative Solutions to High Rise Structures...
To deliver an innovative approach to high rise development, MLM have a team with internationally recognised expertise
in structural design of complex High Rise Structures, providing unique, value engineered solutions to buildings throughout
the world, in particular the Middle East, South America, Europe and Asia.
Page 5
Understanding High Rise Economy...
We strive to maximise client benefit in reaching for height to:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Achieve economies of scale
Maximise useable floor area
Use commodity materials wherever possible
Simplify through repetition of form
Squeeze the structure/services sandwich
Optimise floor plate occupied by services and transportation risers
We design complete structural frames and have particular expertise in:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

Understanding High Rise Economy...
We are expert in the effective use of international codes of practice including:
• American Standards
• British Standards
• Euro Codes
Technology is the key to innovation in design and construction. First class structural analysis promotes real structural
integrity by exposing potential solutions which might not be obvious or simply intuitive. We enjoy transforming intractable
problems into practical solutions; and making expensive structures affordable.
Computer technology and high speed communications are essential for the timely delivery of high quality engineering.
Continual investment in BIM and 3D technology enable us to maintain consistently high levels of productivity to respond
to our client’s needs.
Our designs make best use of modern construction methods while bringing the maximum benefit from construction materials. We keep our capability sharp through our value engineering commissions and our work with specialist contractors.
Through our work in post-tensioned concrete, tall buildings and design of deep basements we consistently deliver thinner,
longer-spanning floors, higher net/gross floor area ratios and less costly, more timely underground solutions that create
value.

Our Values
At MLM we all share the same values.
They are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
We do what we say we will do
We deliver on time
We do a good job
We continuously improve what we do
We work together in partnership
We communicate completely and with respect
We aspire to be “great people to work with”.

for the team in London. He has a
passion for engineering design and
ensures a ‘hands on’ involvement on
all projects. He has a specialism in
design and construct work and has
developed strong relationships in this

to his unique approach to risk and
opportunity management and value
engineering. It is also attributed to
his general approach to creating
simple, elegant and cost effective
solutions to complex structural
problems.
Rob believes that his team should
be equipped with the very latest
tools and training and in this way,
he can offer his clients the optimum
structural solutions. All designers
therefore have access to state of

Queensland Road, London
MLM have provided Structural, Civil, Geotechnical Engineering
and Building Control services to this mixed-use development
consisting of circa 650 apartments and 22,000m2 commercial
space.
The commercial base of this new development connects
the podium level around the stadium (designed to cope with
60,000 football fans) via large floorplate leisure uses to a more
intimate Queensland Road to the South. Four residential towers
above step down from the mega-scale of the stadium, providing
generous sunny roof terraces to the penthouses. This new
piece of city is completed by a sinuous terrace of housing with
more commercial space at street level which mediates between
the new infrastructure of the stadium and the neighbouring
Victorian terraces.

Air Traffic Control Room,
Muscat International Airport
MLM were asked by air traffic control room specialists Tex ATC
to assist with the structural design on the Air Traffic Control
Room of Muscat International Airport.
Structural challenges included dealing with columns in the
room that were reducing important 360° visibility. The 85m
high concrete tower also needed to withstand extremes of
temperature, 85mph winds and the occasional earthquake
without losing the integrity of its fully glazed, 4m high envelope.
Our services included:
• Advising on optimal structural form to acheive efficiency
while maintaining buildability, transportability and
compatability with tight constraints on visibility and
accommodating building services
• Preparing a detailed calculations package for presentation
to the client and providing support during a rigorous
checking process
• Advising on detailed design of bespoke steelwork details

BIM
We utilise the latest, most efficient design and draughting packages. We have embraced using sophisticated and industry
changing Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology.
We recognise that excellent project visuals aid project understanding, but we know that BIM technology is about more than
creating a 3D building model. BIM technology allows us the tools to bring together a range of information about a project’s
physical and functional features across its lifecycle.
We also understand that BIM technology is constantly evolving and we are committed to updating our processes to fully
realise the potential of this powerful information technology.
