October 24, 2015
My soul magnifies the Lord
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
Because He has regarded the lowliness of
His handmaid;
For behold, henceforth all generations
shall call me blessed;
Because He who is mighty has done
great things for me,
and holy is His name;
And His mercy is from generation
to generation.
In this month of October, which is dedicated to the
Holy Rosary, let us consider this beautiful prayer as a
means for us to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by
meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation.

My Sisters and Brothers,
Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” The
blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” So, what
do you want the Lord to do for you? We have many needs
and many wants. It is OK to ask for them all, but in the end,
nothing is more valuable than being able to see - to see what
matters, to see what our real blessings are, to see the way
God sees. It is the most important thing that Jesus came to
teach people, and in the end, the most valuable lesson we can
learn. Definitely Jesus calls us to love, to love God and to
love one another. However, unless we see who God really is,
and who we are as people created in God’s image, although
altered by our humanity and flawed by our sinfulness, we
will never be able to love the way Jesus taught us.
This weekend we celebrate the sacrament of the Anointing of
the Sick at all our liturgies. Certainly we put our trust in
the healing power of the Lord, but we know that God works
through the faith, prayers and compassion of the community.
This is an opportunity for us to be reminded of how
important it is for us to continually pray for all the sick and
suffering of our parish. Look at the sick list in this bulletin,
and know that there are many, many more that we may never
even be aware of who need our prayers. I would ask you to
look over the sick list and if there is anyone who no longer
needs to be on the list to please call our office and let us
know. We will pray for people as long as they need us to, but
often people get better and are back to good health and we
never are aware of that. I read over the list every week and
pray for each and every person, as well as for the health and
wellbeing of our entire parish family. I encourage you to do
the same.
We also celebrate Priesthood Sunday this weekend, and pray
for an increased response to God’s call to serve the Church
as ordained, religious or lay ecclesial ministers. God knows
we need more dedicated servants who respond to the call to
serve. This coming Tuesday all the priests of the diocese will
be spending a very important day together with the bishop to
address the growing shortage of priests in our diocese, and
what that will mean for all of our parishes. We welcome a
seminarian, Cameron Popik, to our parish this weekend to
share a few thoughts about his response to God’s call. Please
pray for all those who are in formation for ministry and for
an increased response among all people to consider serving
the Church. Do not be reluctant to encourage someone you
notice who may show signs of a vocation. Many ministers in
the Church will acknowledge that the two main sources for
helping them to discern their vocation is their family and
their parish. Perhaps we should be asking God, “What do
you want me to do for you?”
We continue to respond to opportunities to reach out to the
poor and needy. For the next two weeks we will be
collecting coats, hats and gloves for the poor as the cold of
Winter approaches. Most of us have more than we really
need or even could use. Go through your closet and help
keep someone warm. Also, please remember to bring back
your blue bags for the Food Pantry. I am still amazed (and
annoyed) by the number of blue bags that are never returned.
Thank you to those who have been filling them and helping
us to keep our shelves stocked. These may seem like small
ways to reach out to those in need, but small things done
with love make a big difference.
It seems like we just started the month of October and we
are already looking at November next Sunday. Let me just
share with you a few things to keep in mind. First of all,
don’t forget to set your clocks back next weekend, and think
about a good way to use that extra hour we get at this time
of the year. Next Sunday we celebrate the feast of All Saints,
so it will be good to all be together for our Sunday liturgies.
Monday is the feast of All Souls, and we will celebrate our
annual Mass of Remembrance at 7:00 pm that evening. This
is always such a special and moving liturgy where we
remember all those who have gone before us, and by name,
all those whom we have had the privilege of celebrating
their passing into eternal life this past year. I strongly
encourage you to come and share in this very special Mass,
and to give us the names of your loved ones in our Book of
Remembrance or on the All Souls envelopes so that we can
pray for them throughout the month of November. Please
also remember the PTU Christmas Craft Boutique that will
take place in our school on Friday evening, November 6th,
and Saturday November 7th. I often hear from people who
go to many of these kinds of boutiques that ours is among
the best. Congratulations to our PTU and all those who
organize and volunteer at ours, and congratulations and
thank you to our over 100 great crafters. The big winners are
the children of our school who benefit from these proceeds.
And of course, before we jump into November, we need to
celebrate Halloween. We invite all our children and their
families to the rectory for a little trick-or-treat that Saturday
evening between 6 and 8 pm. It is always a pleasure to
welcome you to our home and spend a little time with you. It
is such a fun night.
Enjoy this last week of October. Make the most of God’s
wonderful gifts and continue to pray for the vision to see
how good our God is. Thank you for all the good that you
do. God bless you. Be at peace,
In God’s love,

The meaning behind my chalice
Happy Priesthood Sunday!
On this day we celebrate Priesthood and its Eucharistic
ministry of joy, celebration, forgiveness and mercy, I
thought that it would be fitting to explain to all of you
about a great piece of art that ties into the heart of my
ministry. This piece of art is my chalice. It seems that over
the months I have been here, many people have asked me
about my chalice and the meaning behind it!
One exciting part of entering into ministry once one is
called to the priesthood is choosing a chalice to use when
celebrating Eucharist. The chalice I chose was not manufactured in a factory, it was not picked out from a catalog,
nor was it used before by anyone. This chalice was hand
made by my cousin by hammering silver and by using the
art of mokume gane to form the stem of the chalice. The
chalice itself takes the form of an olive tree, with the
wrapping tree branches and gold leaf around the cup of the
chalice. But why the olive tree design? It all ‘stems’ from a
prayer experience I had on a 30-day silent Ignatian retreat
last summer.
I was praying with Christ at the Garden of Gethsemane. In
the midst of the garden, Christ asked that the cup be taken
from him. In imagining the scene, in the midst of his uncertainty and fear, I saw Jesus grasp on to the olive tree and
pray that beautiful prayer of surrender that “Father, not my
will, but yours be done.”
Every time I celebrate Mass and grab a hold of the olive
tree chalice, I hope to be called back to Christ’s beautiful
prayer of surrender and trust that he made in the midst of
Gethsemane and live out what he prayed, that not my will,
but God’s will be done in my life.
So as you see me grab a hold of the chalice at every
Eucharistic celebration, pray that I can continue to
surrender to God’s will and allow God’s will to enter into
this community in a new way, each and every day of our
lives.
All I can say is that I have been filled with great joy and
thanksgiving as I have been blessed to enter into this life of
surrender, this privileged life of priesthood! And if that
wasn’t enough, the icing on the cake is that I get to enter
into priestly ministry here at St. Gabriel! Thanks be to
God!

LITURGY CORNER
During the month of November, the Catholic Church remembers in a special way the Faithful
Departed. Confident that they now share the fullness of the resurrection in heaven, we lovingly
remember their lives and continue to be embraced by their love. On Monday, November 2 at
7:00pm, we will celebr ate the Feast of the Commemor ation of All the Faithful Depar ted
(All Souls). We r emember in a special way all those who died fr om St. Gabr iel Par ish
over the past year in this touching All Souls Mass of Remembrance. This is a very beautiful liturgy and one in
which we invite the whole parish community to come and pray and support all of those who have lost a loved one in
this past year. As Catholic Christians, Jesus calls us to console those who mourn.
We also invite you to write the names of your deceased loved ones in the Memorial Book that will be in the
Gathering Area throughout the month of November. Your loved ones will be prayed for throughout the month of
November.

Music Notes …
Adult Faith
"Master, I want to see." This is the blind man's answer to
Jesus in this weekend's Gospel. Today Jesus still asks
what we want of Him. Our "blindness" may keep us from
seeing the needs of others. It may keep our hearts blind to
loving even when it's difficult to love. Our blindness
might even keep our hands from serving each other. Let's
keep our prayer one of opening our eyes to seeing as Jesus sees. "Open my eyes Lord. Help me to see your face."
From "Open My Eyes."

Teal Pumpkins …
When we think of the traditional Halloween pumpkin it is
grinning and orange, but there is a new movement to display a symbolic teal pumpkin for Halloween. The Food
Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization is
encouraging displaying their teal pumpkin to indicate
households that will be offering nonfood items to trick-ortreaters with food allergies. An estimated 6 million
children have food allergies in the US. Halloween treats
frequently contain ingredients that cause allergic reactions
such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk and egg. Ideas for nonfood treats include glow sticks, bouncy balls, pencils,
erasers, stickers, mini Slinkies and more. The TEA L
PUMPKIN PROJECT and the Teal Pumpkin Image are

(FARE). For more information and ideas visit their website www.foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkin-project
