On the 14th of April some of our
members
(mainly
committee
members), met for a social evening
at the Streatham and Marlborough
Cricket Club which is now our new
home. It was so nice to be back in more convivial
surroundings after a few years in the wilderness,
since the selling of our clubroom. I do hope, as we
move towards the summer, that more club members
will come along on the second Monday of each month
when we can hopefully sit outside in the sunshine
and enjoy a pint. Those in attendance were Jayne,
Jules, Dave Haggart and Dave King, Steve Valentine,
Bill Wright, Roy Boy, Alan Rowe, Mike Peel and myself.
I was in fear of getting withdrawal symptoms, with
the Herne Hill Good Friday meeting moving to the
Lee Valley Velodrome. My fear was unfounded as an
alternative meeting took place at Herne Hill thanks
MEMBERSHIP
to the Friends of Herne Hill. I arrived with Alan at
DAVID HAGGART
388 Elmers End Road about 10.30am and the meeting was well under way.

There were the usual ‘jumble’ stalls and also
Kent, BR3 3HG
refreshments to add to the ambience.

Amongst the events were junior and juvenile racing, boys and girls, various
disciplines. It was intended to have veterans and ladies racing but
unfortunately this was not well supported and did not go ahead, although
Brian Dacey and Roly Crayford were there in hope of getting in some racing.
There were also ‘penny farthings’ racing and finally a ‘come and try it’ session.
A pleasant morning and early afternoon was enjoyed (albeit a bit chilly) by
quite considerable body of spectators, and the De Laune were there in force.
Jayne and Jules, Steve Valentine, Bill Wright and the golden oldies for their
annual fix, Roy boy, Mike Peel, Alan, myself, and Brian Dacey. We also met
up with an old member from the mid 70’s, Glen Heath, who got in a ride or
two on the track.
On the racing front, I said I was dusting off the cobwebs and might beat
‘evens’, well not quite 30.04! I followed this up the next two consecutive
weeks with 29.08 and 28.56.so getting there. Alan did 28.41 in the
Brighton Mitre (hilly) ‘10’ on Easter Saturday, which I thought would be a
vets record but on checking I had overlooked that Roy Boy did a 25.45 at
age 75. Keep going Alan!
By the time you read this (if you receive hardcopy DLNs), our club ‘15’ will
have taken place and we will look forward to our open ’10’ on Saturday
afternoon, (Isle of Grain course 31st May). We have a great prize list in
celebration of our 125th year, over £800. The event secretary is Jayne, so
please come out and help her with the marshalling duties, and if we are
over booked with volunteers, please come out anyway so we show a great
presence in this our first 125th celebration promotion- the cakes are great!
Think that about covers it for this month.

I hope that you will join us on this 125th year celebratory ride. My intention
is to encourage some of our racing members to join us, along with other
club members who have never been to Newnham, which was the village home
of our founder. The basis of the route is to travel around De Laune
countryside, along country lanes which are as quite as they were in the
fifties, passing various abodes of the families the De Launes married into.
I have yet to work out the exact route but it should be around 35 miles,
so that we can be back at the George by 1.00pm for a ploughmans and a
pint.
For those less active I am hoping Kav will take you on a short walk up to
Sharsted Court and along the path to Doddington Church which is the
resting place of many of the De Laune family.
I have checked the Cycling Time Trials handbook and there is no racing that
day in the south, being Bank Holiday weekend, so no excuses you racers,
with the exception of a couple of you who I know are on holiday.
Please make the effort to attend, you won’t experience such quite lanes
anywhere else in the Garden of England.

As promised last month here are the other two photos sent to me by Alured,
of his grandparents. The one on the left is familiar to many of you, for it was
given to us by Margaret and it used to hang in our clubroom in Choumert
Road.
PAST PRESIDENT'S PORTRAITS
Margaret by
Charles Goldsborough Anderson
Alured by
Earnest Stafford Carlos
Charles Goldsborough Anderson. (1865 – 1936)
I could find very little about Charles, who painted Margaret, except that he
was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland on 6th Nov1865. He married a Mary
Moberley in 1895 in Lewisham. Mary was born in Erith on 20th July 1867
and died 22nd July 1944, Charles died 16th Feb.1936.

Earnest Stafford Carlos 1883-1917
Earnest Carlos was a South London artist, his most famous painting is
‘The Pathfinder’ which he presented to Baden – Powell. If you recognise it
there is a good chance you have followed ‘Coronation Street’ at sometime,
as a copy hangs in the ‘Barlow’ household at number one.
The Pathfinder
Earnest was educated firstly at St John’s the Divine Middle Class school
Kennington, then on to Lambeth Art School and finally to Royal Academy
school in 1901 for 3 years, then a further 2 years.
He was to become a soldier and also founder of the 107th London Troup
which became the 21st Camberwell Scout Group and many of his paintings
are of scouts.
Earnest had first volunteered to join the army in 1914 but was rejected on
medical grounds so he became involved in social work in St George’s
8
Camberwell and St John’s the Divine in Kennington, not that far from the
De Laune Institute.
Eventually Earnest was accepted into the army and served in the 4th East
Kent Territorial (based at Canterbury) as a 2nd Lieutenant. Earnest joined
the Buffs in March 1917. He had previously been in the 16th London Regiment
(Queen’s Westminster Rifles)* into which he volunteered in 1916 and was
subsequently commissioned. He died in France on 14th June 1917, killed by
shell fire in the evening of that day whilst leading his platoon. He is buried
at Chester Farm Cemetery, Zillebeke.
The portrait of our President is dated 1916, and Alured was in the 24th
(County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (The Queen's), and
serving as Hon. Colonel. Their
Headquarters were at 71, New Street,
Kennington. The De Laune Institute was at number 22 New Street (now
Braganza Street). I think we can conclude from all this that Alured and
Earnest were acquainted prior to the commissioning of the portrait.
*In the Great War two of our club members, who lost their lives, Frank Reed
and Percy Tibbles were both serving in the 16th Battalion, Queens
Westminster Rifles, and another member, Arthur Williams, died whilst serving
in the Buffs (East Kent).
Thank you once again Alured for sending the photos to us and I hope the
above will be of interest to you.

For clarification on what constitutes a record, see the following criteria.
1/ Existing age records can only be broken, in either an Open Event,
Association Event to which our club is affiliated and Club Event. Private
events run by other Clubs are not eligible.
2/ To break a record the rider must either beat the existing record for their
age or next eldest age record, if one exists. CTT Vets Standards apply if
no club record exists at your age or older, thus you would be establishing
a record rather than breaking one.
3a/ Should 2 riders improve on a record on the same day, at the same
distance, and are the same age, the second rider to finish must beat the
first rider’s time for them both to claim a record.
10
This might sound obvious but confusion can arise if they were riding different events.
3b/ This would also apply if a current age record is broken but an older
rider goes quicker at an earlier time on the same day.
EG.
. Clare at age
43 does 24.00 and is first to finish, then Sally does 24.09 ten minutes
later, and whilst she has beaten the old record of Jill’s she has not beaten the new record now standing to Clare, that is if Sally is also age 43.
However if Sally is older than Clare then she would also have a claim. Obviously if Sally was first to finish both her and Clare would have broken the
previous record held by Jill.
If this is as clear as mud my best advice is to make your claim to your
new TT secretary, Alan Rowe or to me, as I will be doing the recording, and
we will do the rest.
Good Luck to all you ladies.

Rather a quiet time at the moment with no club committee meeting since
January except the AGM in March.
Next committee meeting is scheduled for
12th June in our new meeting venue of Streatham & Marlborough Cricket Club - a
contact made by Tony that seems to fit all our needs. Our first meeting was
on 14th April and I understand everyone was suitably impressed with its location
(opposite the old Grove Tavern, Lordship Lane).
Unfortunately Tony & I could
not attend having had a previous commitment, we are given to understand that
the beer is cheaper than that in local hostelries so a win/win for all. Having looked
back through the club's history this is not the first time we have joined forces
with a Cricket Club - we had a similar arrangement in 1930 with the Malvern Cricket
Club.
Subs and donations continue to come into David and myself on a regular basis,
in fact I believe almost every member has been encouraged to part with money.
I will be taking funds from the Memorial Fund Interest pot this year to offset
commitments made at the AGM of £5,000 to Herne Hill Velodrome Trust to help
fund some restorative work to the perimeter grounds of the track.
This is in
addition to the £1,000 set aside for Herne Hill on an annual basis for 5 years this will be our 3rd year in the sequence. There is also a spend on new racing
strip of just over £5,000, to cover and an approximate spend of £2,000 for
coaching led club runs.
There are plans afoot to substantially increase the
prizes on offer in the 10 and 25 time trials together with a free gift for every
entrant to these events. In this 125th Anniversary year for the club there may
be more - so watch this space.
All the changes to official personnel within club can now be found on the website,
kindly updated by Mike Peel.
You will notice however that we do need a new
Tony offered his services in 2013 but only for one year - if
you feel you can undertake the role please come forward and make yourself known
to any of the committee listed. There is a general outline of the duties elsewhere
in this DLN.
I have not yet submitted the our claim to HMIC to recoup just a little more
income from our donations, awaiting some paperwork from a couple of members
to ensure I have all the official documentation before making our claim.

ON
THE JOB OF CLUB SECRETARY.
General Guidelines for Role of:
14
Hi All.
The time has come to think about our club run to France.
The date will be Saturday the 7 June. The format will be
the same as previous day trips. Leave your car at Dover
(Dover Harbour have a multi storey Park) and take your
bike on the 08.25 ferry to Calais. We have got to be at
the harbour by 07.25 to book in.
This will be a new route missing out the cobbles and the
big hill. We will go direct to Guines for our coffee or Beer
stop. We then carry on to Ardres for lunch at the La
Fregate Restaurant. Total mileage approx. 35 miles.
We will return on an early evening ferry. (All times to be
confirmed) and perhaps a glass of wine in Calais. As you
know our club will be part supplement the fare. It would
be better if I knew how many people would like to go so I
can get a block booking. Please let me know if you are
interested.
