VINTAGE DAY COMING
JUNE 4th
Candler Field Museum will re-create The Sights and Sounds of the 1920s at the
Annual VINTAGE DAY MUSIC FESTIVAL on Saturday, June 4th. The airfield and
museum are located just off Hwy 362 in Williamson GA. Activities are scheduled
from 11 am - 5 pm at this family-focused event that includes an invitation to dressup in period costumes; see the display of old cars and vintage planes; and enjoy the
old-fashioned food and music. This year’s event will be a music festival along with
an airplane parade of flight. Admission fee is $10 per car with all proceeds going to
support the Candler Field Museum Youth Program.
This year we will start off the afternoon with the Freedom Belles who will arrive on
the DC-3. This singing group will present WWII era music at the airplane and then
move into the hangar to continue their songs. They will entertain again during the
afternoon along with the Bonnie Ridge Blue Grass group. A Parade of Flight will
begin promptly at 1 PM. This will consist of a continuous parade of aircraft that will
pass by the audience while the announcer explains the significance of each
airplane. VINTAGE DAY best represents the Museum's continuing efforts to recreate the Original Atlanta Airport as it was in the 1920s. People who lived in the
1920s experienced a fascination with the emerging technology of both the
Automobile and the Aeroplane. Barnstorming, air shows, and flying circus events
were popular forms of entertainment for families before TV. Food and refreshments
will be available all day including Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Brats, and a 1920’s Blue
Plate special along with a full menu at Barnstormers Grill. Airplane rides in our
vintage Waco biplane will be available all day.
This year we will conduct a raffle of a 1928 Colt .380 automatic nickel plated pistol
with tickets priced at $20 each. We will also raffle off a handmade aviation related
quilt with tickets priced at $5 each. Raffle Tickets can be purchased by visiting
Barnstormers Grill or by calling the museum office at 770-467-8318.
The raffle drawing will be held at 4:15 PM, and the day will end with the flying of a
1917 Curtiss Jenny. This Jenny is one of only 6 remaining in the world. The Jenny
will drop candy bars attached to parachutes for the kids to pick up. This is a
reenactment of the early days at the original Candler Field when Doug Davis would
drop candy bars from his airplane.
The Candler Field Museum is a living museum located in rural Williamson GA where
old aeroplanes still fly, antique cars still drive and the sights and sounds of the
1920s era come to life every day. For more information about the museum or

YOUTH PROGRAM UPDATE
AERONCA CHAMP FIRST FLIGHT
A significant milestone was reached on April 6, 2016. The Aeronca Champ restored
by our Youth Program members flew for the first time. Here is an account of the
day courtesy of volunteer Jim Hoak.
Since all of you don't get to the CFM-YAP shop for every session, we have two pieces
of good news to pass along for those who haven't heard.
Fellow student Kanyika Mswia passed his check ride and obtained his Private Pilot
Certificate in a Diamond Aircraft on Tuesday ( I hope I have the date correct ), April
5, 2016. CONGRATULATIONS to Kanyika.
Another milestone happened on Wednesday April 6, 2016 at Peach State Aerodrome.
Mr. A.C. Hutson, one of our able mentors took our Aeronca Champ for a Test Flight
at the beginning of our Wednesday evening shop session. It looked and sounded
great and A.C. said it handled well. We have a few squawks to work off and then
our CFM-YAP students can start building flying time in this aircraft.
For those who are relatively new to our program and may not know the history of
this project, here are some basics:
This "Basket Case" ( read many piles of loose parts ) aircraft came to us from the
widow of a retired Delta Mechanic late in 2014. Under the guidance of project
Manager Dave Holec, mentor A. C. Hutson who helped with his previous Champ
building experience, and all the rest of the mentors and all the students, this
airplane is a great accomplishment for our program. Of course we need to also
mention the great engine overhaul / rebuild by Mr. Don Swords.
We all learned many skills in putting this aircraft together. Congratulations to all of
us!

This airplane will now be used solely to teach young people in our program how to
fly. Each member of the program who enters our flight training program will
receive 20 hours in this airplane prior to going into the Cessna 172 or Cherokee to
complete their Private Pilot license. It is our goal to teach these young pilots to be
aviators in the truest sense of the word. 5 hours of the 20 will be solo time for each
student.
Rachel and Doug Dumas have started a blog page on the Youth Program
keeping everyone up to date on happenings at the Youth Hangar. Please

EAA YOUNG EAGLE DAY
April 23rd, EAA Chapter 468 hosted a Young Eagle Day at Peach State
Aerodrome. The weather was just about perfect. The Chapter carried over 30 kids
for an airplane ride. For many it was the first time they had ridden in an airplane.
Founded in 1992, the Young Eagles program has dedicated nearly 25 years to giving
youth ages 8–17 their first free ride in an airplane.
It’s the only program of its kind, with the sole mission to introduce and inspire kids
in the world of aviation.
Today, the Young Eagles program worldwide has flown nearly 2 million kids with the
help of EAA’s network of volunteer pilots and ground volunteers. Our local Chapter
468 has been active in the program since inception.

COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE
WWII HERITAGE DAYS
The Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force hosted their annual WWII Heritage Days Event on April
30th. Volunteers from Candler Field Museum staffed a booth during the weekend. It was a very worthwhile and
entertaining weekend for hundreds of people who visited the CAF Hangar located on the Peachtree City, Georgia
Airport. A number of WWII veterans were honored during the weekend. Numerous airplanes were on display
including the C-47 pictured below. This airplane was named "Placid Lassie" and it was actually flown during the
D-Day invasion. WWII D-Day paratrooper James "Pee Wee" Martin was also on hand to discuss his experiences.

Todd Thaxton, and Michelle Thaxton.
RUNWAY IMPROVEMENTS
You may have noticed that our runway at Peach State Aerodrome is a bit more
narrow than before. This is a temporary situation while we complete the
installation of a sprinkler system. As a matter of fact, we are almost ready to test
the system. During this phase we have moved the runway markers in a few feet to
provide a safer operation. The distance between the cones is 50 feet. We should
be able to move the runway markers back to the 100 ft width within a couple of
weeks. Please bear with us while we improve the smoothness of the runway. If you
happen to stray past the markers you should not have a problem. There are no
open ditches, etc.
FLABOB AIRPORT TO HOST
ANTIQUE FLY-IN
Flabob Airport, our sister airport located in Riverside, CA, will be hosting their
annual Flying Circus this coming June. This is a great event that is growing each
year.

Candler Field Museum to foster the camaraderie of Delta pilots, Clipped Wings,
Pioneers, and friends. Fly or drive your airplane or special car and we will place it

DC-3 A MOVIE STAR AGAIN
On April 18th, Ron Alexander and Connie Bowlin flew the DC-3 Candler Field Express
to Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Georgia. The airplane was used in several
scenes for an upcoming movie titled "Hidden Figures." The movie description
copied from comingsoon.net states:
"Hidden Figures" is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P.
Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae)brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind
one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into
orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around
the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and
race lines to inspire generations to dream big."
Extras waiting for the next scene to be filmed.
Keven Costner is one of the stars in the movie.

NIEUPORT 11 PROGRESS
In a joint venture between the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and the Candler Field
Museum, a Nieuport 11 will be restored to flying condition. The replica was built by
Gordon and Kay Bainbridge in the 1960’s and flown at Old Rhinebeck until an
unfortunate accident thirty years later.
Craftsmen at Candler Field will bring the Nieuport back to life. It will remain on
display in Georgia for a period of three years before returning to Old Rhinebeck. It
will be powered by the original LeRhone rotary engine. Anyone interested in
assisting with the restoration should contact Brian Karli at the museum.
Please CLICK HERE to view progress on the restoration.
DATA PLATE COLLECTION
By Brian Karli
The Candler Field Museum was fortunate to receive a large collection of aircraft
data plates from the Jack Barbery estate. Over fifty data plates were collected
over a period of many years by Jim Hester of Bowie, Maryland. More were added
when Jack Barbery purchased the collection in 1986. We will feature a couple of
these data plates in each newsletter along with the story that goes with each one.
Curtiss C-46 serial number AC-44-78739
This particular C-46 was delivered to the USAAF in 1945. Several years later it
flew for Riddle Airlines.
More stories in the June issue.
