Highlight:
Beat Generation
Jack Lorenz served as principal of
Ridgewood High School from 2006 to
2011, and even in such a short time he
had a big impact. Lorenz was a leader and
a visionary on many fronts.
Some of his initiatives included the special
education “S.A.I.L.” program, the Learning
Commons, Backwoods, and the Global
Classroom experience.
One of Lorenz’s favorite expressions was, “You have to win the
students’ hearts before you win their minds.” His accomplishments and efforts on behalf of Ridgewood High School will not
soon be forgotten.

dan Iannone, present to a local girl scout troop to help teach
them promotion techniques for selling homemade brownies
in order to help them earn their business badges. As part of a
project for DECA, Constant and Iannone taught the local
troop how to buy supplies, make the brownies, as well as sell
them. The Entrepreneurship Promotional Project is a thirtypage chapter project for DECA which involves teaching skills
of entrepreneurship to others. The RHS team will present
their project at the DECA State Competition in February.
On December 1, Dr. Daniel Fishbein ordered the flags to be
flown at half-mast in honor of Jack Lorenz’s service to the
district and in memory of his passing. Additionally, RHS observed
a moment of silence during morning announcements
in remembrance of Lorenz and his contributions and dedication
to Ridgewood High School.
He was an educator in every sense of the word, and will be
deeply missed by his colleagues and friends at RHS and across
the district.
Please keep his family in your thoughts during this trying time.
Ridgewood High
School DECA is raising
money for the nonprofit organization,
The Seeing Eye. The
Seeing Eye breeds,
trains, and provides
seeing eye dogs to
those in need. New Jersey and RHS DECA aims to raise
enough money to donate a seeing eye dog to someone who
cannot afford one, with a goal of $600.
RHS POLICY CORNER: Attendance
Please donate to our campaign during this holiday season.
No donation is too small, and anything you can give will help
give someone in need a helper and true companion.
Students and parents are notified in a timely and systematic manner
if a pattern of absences is leading to loss of credit. An appeals procedure is provided to hear appeals by the student and/or parent(s) in
loss of credit cases. Absences are displayed using the Skyward Family
Access portal. We also use a phone calling system to relate absence
information to parent/guardians. The phone messenger will contact
the primary number that is listed in Skyward.
To donate please go to www.gofundme.com/hskppk
Thank you so much,
RHS DECA
Every absence is recorded and promptly reported to parents. For an
absence to be excused, a parent or guardian must call the Attendance Office (201-670-2800) on the day of the absence stating the
reason for the absence. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher to make up work that is missed.
Absences will be considered unexcused if a student fails to follow the
absence procedure or if the reason is deemed to be unacceptable. If
an absence is determined to be a cut, the student will receive no
credit for work missed in the class and disciplinary action will follow.

A Window Into Ridgewood High School
A student in Jen Landa’s Acting I class is tasked with
acting out a death scene, as part of a theater game
called Mimed Death. Students were each given a
death scene to act out and the rest of the class had
to guess what killed them.
New York City Rescue Mission
Students in Jim Donnelly’s English classes donated over one hundred and fifty dollars to the New York Rescue Mission charity,
which provided Thanksgiving meals to homeless residents of
New York City. The money sent by the Ridgewood High School
English classes was enough to provide seventy-two meals to
those in need during the holiday season.
Donnelly’s classes first heard about the charity through their
weekly in-class readings of the Wall Street Journal. The classes
use the newspaper as part of their lessons to learn about current
events and journalistic writing.
Students in Caroline Richards’ and Julie Gordon’s’
English 9 class read novels pertaining to the hero’s
journey in the comfort of the new Learning
Commons.
The Ridgewood High School Marching Band performs at the University
of Oregon’s pep rally as part of the Progressive Legend’s Classic of
college basketball on November 24 and November 25. The event took
place at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Classic has
become one of the nation's most anticipated early-season college basketball tournaments, and it was an honor for the Ridgewood High
School Marching Band to be selected to play as part of the event.
