October Luncheon To Feature Real Estate Overview
How global and National Trends may Impact Real Estate Markets
D
r. Mark G. Dotzour is the Chief Economist and Director of Research for the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He earned his Ph.D. in
the Department of Finance at the University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and served as Associate Professor of Real Estate and Finance at Wichita State University for 10 years. As Chief
Economist, he is currently doing market research to monitor how global and national trends
are likely to impact residential and commercial real estate markets.
He has been at the Real Estate Center since August 1997. Since then, he has published
91 articles in magazines and given almost 1,200 presentations to more than 195,000 people.
His research findings and comments have been published in the Wall Street Journal, Money
Magazine, USA Today and Business Week, and he has been a guest on the Jim Lehrer
NewsHour on PBS.
Dotzour regularly makes presentations at national and state conventions. His audiences
include residential and commercial real estate brokers, bankers, Chambers of Commerce,
economic development organizations, homebuilders, construction and engineering firms,
CPAs, wealth managers and foundations.

Fall is in the air, and it’s so hard to believe
we’re entering the final quarter of this year. Not only
will we enjoy some cooler weather the next few
months, but it’s our last opportunity as business people
to make this a banner year for our organizations. At the
Chamber, we’re in the final stages of completing 2013
goals and projects, drafting 2014 budgets, orienting
new members of the Board of Directors, and planning

Congratulations to the award recipients at our September Tourism Luncheon who represented three successful conventions: the Region 10 Catholic Youth
Ministry Conference, the Texas High School State Gymnastic Meet, and the Texas
Taxidermy Association Annual Conference. We received outstanding comments
on ‘Texas Country Reporter’ Bob Phillips’ remarks. Also, many thanks to our luncheon sponsors Coldwell Banker Patterson Properties, the San Angelo Lodging Association, and Fort Concho/Texas Forts Trail.
The Chamber Board adopted a position this month to support Proposition
6 on the Nov. 5 ballot that would transfer $2 billion from the State’s Rainy Day
Fund to provide financing to communities and regions for water projects in the
State Water Plan. More information soon.
September highlights also included the debut of the Chamber’s annual
magazine Portraits of San Angelo, the CVB’s new 2013-2014 Visitors Guide and
updated color rack brochure, a “Members & Muffins” new member orientation,
and September’s Brown Bag Lunch featuring Charlotte Anderson on creative marketing strategies.

During the luncheon, the Convention & Visitors Bureau recognized the Region 10 Catholic Youth Ministry Conference, the
Texas High School Gymnastic Association State Meet, and the Texas Taxidermy Association Annual Conference for the
economic impact they generated by bringing their convention groups to San Angelo.

From the Mailbag: THANK YOU! The HSU students thoroughly enjoyed our fam tour this past weekend; our visit to
San Angelo was great! Several of the students commented
how much they enjoyed visiting with you (Pamela & Lucie) at
Fuentes. We had a good tour of the Fine Arts Museum, enjoyed floats at the Sassy Fox and had some shopping time
downtown, learned about Concho pearls from Mark Priest and then toured
Fort Concho. Thank you for your gracious and warm hospitality and for all of
your assistance.

Your Chamber is guided by 19 volunteers who make up the Board of Directors. Each month we feature a different board member perspective to better
acquaint you with the men and women who serve in these leadership roles.
Jeff DeLoach
I grew up in Jackson, Tennessee and attended the Community College there for two years while working in the
mailroom and transportation department of the local newspaper. I continued my education at Memphis State University while working at the local newspaper in Memphis (an EW Scripps paper) – and later earned a bachelor degree in
Accounting and one in Finance from Roosevelt University. I left Memphis to join a Chicago-based audit firm that audited
newspaper circulation numbers. I traveled throughout the US, but spent one and a half of those three years as an auditor in Texas (San Antonio and Houston). In 1987, I became an audit manager based in Chicago, where I also met and
married my beautiful wife Laurette. In 1993 I rejoined EW Scripps and in 2005 landed back in Texas at the Corpus Christi
Caller-Times, where I was the VP of Advertising and Circulation. In December 2009, I became Publisher of the StandardTimes, and we have loved living here in San Angelo.
San Angelo has been a real blessing for me and my family for a number of reasons – but I will only take the
time to share one. Laurette and I home schooled our 3 children – ok let me correct that, Laurette home schooled our
children! In the fall of our first year here, we had 3 in high school, a freshman (Joey), a junior (Cara) and a senior (Adam). Because San Angelo has two
great higher-education institutions (Howard College and ASU), we were able to have Adam and Cara attend Howard and ASU through the dual credit
programs offered in Texas (and Joey is doing that now at Howard as a HS Senior). This higher-education opportunity has been an awesome blessing for
our family – not many towns the size of San Angelo can say they have two state institutions the caliber of Howard and ASU.
My wife and I have both been involved in the community and we love it here. I am active on several boards including the Chamber where I
also serve on the Executive Committee, and Laurette has been particularity involved with the Girls Home and House of Faith. One of my primary objectives for the Standard-Times and gosanangelo.com is to help our residents celebrate the good life we have here in the Concho Valley by reminding them
in our publications of the good things happening here, along with doing our part at the paper to help San Angelo grow economically. Hopefully you have
witnessed some of this through our expanded special reports and sections over the last few years. As you may know, the Standard-Times has been serving the Concho Valley since 1884 (129 years), which was 3 years prior to San Angelo being founded in 1887, and we plan to be here serving San Angelo
and the Concho Valley for another 129 years.
Laurette and I love San Angelo and are very proud to call it home!!

Chamber Membership—Still A Great Business Investment

years, business people are naturally evaluating expenditures and working to make the most prudent decisions for

are members of their local chamber garner greater
consumer credibility, trust, and loyalty than those that
are not affiliated with the local chamber of commerce.
With belt tightening being the norm it is important to note
that wage earners at all levels expressed greater confidence, awareness and patronage likelihood. Income earners from $20-40,000 annually stated that they are 64 percent more likely to patronize chamber members, those
earning $60-80,000 are 86 percent more likely and those
earning more than $100,000 per year are 77 percent more
likely to purchase goods and services from chamber affiliated businesses. This competitive edge is also evident by
region, age and gender.
Taking this notion a step further, the study found that the
greater the level of involvement of the company in the local chamber (i.e. serving on the board, sponsoring events,
etc.) the greater the benefits. A company that is highly
involved with its local chamber sees consumers that are
12% more likely to think that its products stack up better
against its competition and 19% are more likely to think
favorably of the company in general.
Finally, there are two keys to receiving the benefits of local chamber membership. First, a business has to be a
member. Second, businesses must work internally and
with their local chamber to make customers and potential
customers aware of their affiliation. In short, membership
in the local chamber of commerce is not a luxury item; it is
an absolute necessity for all businesses seeking to navigate
difficult economic waters.
Using the restaurant industry as an example the impact of
membership is evident. The Shapiro study revealed that in
chain restaurants patronage frequency, favorability, and
purchase intent are all directly related to involvement in
the local chamber of commerce.
