International Financial

(IFRS), a single set of
global accounting standards,
the Malaysian Accounting

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is shown
in table 1.

YBhg Dato’ Lukman Ibrahim, GCFO, DRB-HICOM Berhad,
delivering his keynote address during the FRS 139 Briefing session
FRS 139 and its complementary accounting standard FRS 7 list the requirements for
presentation and disclosures applicable to the DRB-HICOM Group beginning with
financial year 1 April 2010. Both are complex standards that affect accounting policies,
processes, documentations, people, technology infrastructure and statutory reporting
including presentation and disclosures.
Their implications are a greater use of fair values on financial instruments within the
Group (i.e. investments, loans, receivables, payables and borrowings previously recognized
at cost). Simple investments (both quoted and unquoted) are also marked-to-market while
derivatives are measured at fair value and no longer seen as off-balance sheet items.

S
uzuki Malaysia Automobile Sdn Bhd (SMA) unveiled the
latest SX4 Sport Crossover with new improved features
recently. Since its introduction in 2007, the SX4 has become
a best-seller in Malaysia and is very popular among young
professionals. SMA is confident the improved features add more value and
dynamism to an internationally-acclaimed car already renowned for its fun driving
performance and exuberant styling.
The new exterior features are auto-retractable side mirrors with signal indicators
plus newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels and front grille. Its new interior features
include new meter cluster with integrated information display, newly designed
auto air conditioner control panel, front seat armrests, illuminated audio controls
and improved audio system with dashboard centre speaker and auxiliary socket.
There are also new performance and safety features. With increase in horsepower,
its maximum output is now 110PS (82 kW)/5,600 rpm [previously 101PS (75
kW)/5600 rpm]. The maximum torque has increased to 150 Nm/3,800 rpm [140
Nm/4,000 rpm before]. The model has rear disc brakes and gives a more comfortable ride
due to improved suspension and a lighter chassis for better fuel efficiency.
With the newly-improved SX4, SMA hopes to increase the Suzuki brand presence in Malaysia
and aims to sell 600 units in 2010. SMA is supported by a strong network of 29 authorised
3S dealers nationwide.

Taffeta White
8th Generation
CIVIC
The Honda 8th Generation Civic has sold over 30,000
units in Malaysia. Currently enjoying 40% market share
in the non-national mid-size sedan segment year-todate, this best-seller has maintained the No. 1 position
in its segment for the third consecutive year.
Since March 2009 its 1.8L and Civic 2.0L
models have come in Taffeta White and Honda
Malaysia aims to sell 600 units monthly, with the
Taffeta White colour comprising 30% of sales.
Honda Malaysia forecasts that the 8th Generation Civic
model will contribute close to 20% of total sales for
2009 nationwide. This achievement means more than
40,000 units of Honda Civic (7th & 8th Generation) have been sold in Malaysia
since 2001.
Mr. Toru Takahashi, Managing Director and CEO of Honda Malaysia, said the
other two siblings of the 8th Generation Civic, the Civic Hybrid and Civic Type-R,
have sold over 200 units each in the country.
Since its introduction, the Honda Civic has won multiple awards for its stylishness,
performance and fuel efficiency. It was named 2006 Car of the Year by NST
Ambank Group in the overall car and family car category and 2005/2006 Car of
the Year by Autocar Asean in the overall and mid-size sedan/hatchback.
The new Taffeta White variant joins the colour line-up which includes Crystal
Black Pearl, Alabaster Silver Metallic, Sparkle Gray Pearl and Bold Beige Metallic.
HONDA Malaysia Cars RON95 Compatible
According to Mr. Toru Takahashi, Managing Director and CEO
of Honda Malaysia, all Honda cars require a minimum RON91
and any number above the minimum RON is safe and will not
affect the performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle.
For Civic Type R, RON97 is recommended because of its high
performance engine. A higher RON produces more power for this
performance sedan.
A
ll models distributed by Honda Malaysia are compatible with
petrol RON95 (Research Octane Number 95), which has
replaced RON92 since 1 September 2009.
Honda Malaysia assures all Honda drivers that RON95 should not affect
any model distributed by its authorised dealers except for Civic Type R.
When fuel with lower RON is used, engine knocking happens,
resulting in reduced performance and fuel efficiency. To prevent
engine knocking, all models from Honda Malaysia are equipped
with knock sensors, detectors that signal engine operation to
slow down the ignition timing (spark plug action) in case of
engine knocking, which would consequently affect the vehicle’s
performance and fuel efficiency. Knock sensors can also run on
fuel with a minimum octane number of 91.
For models distributed before 2001 or by non-authorised Honda
dealers, owners are advised to cross check the vehicle’s minimum
RON requirement by referring to their owner’s manuals.

RB-HICOM Berhad’s integrated
automotive complex in Pekan
celebrated its 25th anniversary on
12 December 2009.
The occasion was graced by HRH Sultan Haji
Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah Ibni Al-Marhum
Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mu’adzam
Shah, The Sultan of Pahang, HRH Sultanah
Hajjah Kalsom binti Abdullah, HRH Tengku
Abdullah Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah
Al-Musta’in Billah, the Crown Prince of Pahang
and his consort, HRH Tunku Azizah Aminah
Maimunah Iskandariah binti Sultan Iskandar AlHaj. Also present were the Prime Minister, YAB
Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak,
YABhg Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor and the Chief
Minister of Pahang, YAB Dato’ Sri Adnan bin
Haji Yaakob.
Group Managing Director of DRB-HICOM
Berhad, YBhg Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil
said the complex has invested almost RM746
million to construct two automotive plants, a
PDI centre and a plant for military vehicles and
armoured trucks. The entire complex has rolled
out nearly 500,000 vehicles of over two dozen
makes by September 2009.
The original single plant has grown to a fourplant complex and become a significant player
in developing the national automotive industry.
Known for its production lines of renowned
marques like Mercedes-Benz, Isuzu, HICOM
Perkasa, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Daewoo and Ssang
Yong, it is one of the country’s five automotive
hubs along with those in Shah Alam, Gurun,
Tanjung Malim and Bertam.
YBhg Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil added
that it has not been easy for DRB-HICOM
to achieve this status as owners of world-class
marques expect global quality standards. “The
Mercedes-Benz (C, E and S Class) assembled in
this complex is on par in terms of quality with
the cars manufactured in Daimler AG’s plants
in Germany due to our strict adherence to the
standards set by Daimler.” He elaborated that
the Pekan integrated automotive complex has
special skills to assemble world class marques
as well as manufacture defence vehicles for the
army. “There is also a robotic arm assemble line
– the first in the east coast, for Suzuki.”
The 96-hectare complex is the main component
in Pahang’s automotive industrial park that
will expand to 400 hectares to make Pekan the
national automotive hub under the East Coast
Economic Region (ECER) initiative.
In 25 years, DRB-HICOM’s automotive
complex has helped accelerate the development
“Its achievements are not
only in making vehicles for
well-known producers like
Isuzu and Suzuki but also
for Mercedes-Benz which has
given an opportunity for it
to assemble various models,
including the S500 Class
which has the highest value.”
– YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib
bin Tun Abdul Razak
in Pekan and spurred automotive related
downstream activities in the surrounding areas.
Since 1984 the complex has generated RM5
billion in revenue. In 2008, it contributed
about RM442 million in excise duties and taxes
in Pahang and this is expected to increase to
RM525 million for 2009.
About 70 per cent of its 2000-men workforce
comes from Pekan and many of their
offsprings form the second generation working
for the integrated automotive complex.
According to YBhg Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Khamil
Jamil, the Group’s world class automotive college
will enrol its first batch of students in 2010 and
enhance the status of Pekan as the premier
automotive hub in the region. Its campus will be
located in Pekan and will be taking in about 140
students for a six-to 18-month long automotive
industry course.
Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak
praised the achievements of DRB-HICOM
saying, “Its achievements are not only in making
vehicles for well-known producers like Isuzu and
Suzuki but also for Mercedes-Benz which has
given an opportunity for it to assemble various
models, including the S500 class which has the
highest value.”

An Example in Environmental Learning
More than 15 participants from eight member states of the
Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and Asia
Pacific Countries such as Singapore, Cambodia, Bhutan
and Lao PDR, visited Honda’s Pegoh Plant in Alor Gajah,
Melaka, recently.
The site tour was aimed at learning the recommended
waste management practices and systems during the
Environmental Management & Pollution Control
training course conducted by the Environment Institute
of Malaysia (EiMAS).
According to Encik Azhar Abdul Wahab, Senior General Manager at the Honda
manufacturing plant, Honda Malaysia has stressed the green factory concept since
its inception in 2002. Encik Syahril M. Azmi, Manager of the Constant Velocity
Joint (CVJ) Department, who is also the Environmental Representative of Honda
Malaysia, led the delegates on a factory tour and showed them its practice in managing
waste disposal.
Honda Malaysia’s green initiatives to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide include
recycling waste water for generic cleaning purposes; drying up high moisture waste
prior to disposal; and processing excess food into organic substances for fertiliser.
Other programmes are a mist collector and a recycle and collection centre.

HONDA Malaysia’s Environmental School Talks
Trees are cut down in the name of development and construction,
reducing the habitat of animals who then face extinction as their natural
environment is destroyed. One such species fast losing its home and
critically endangered is the Sumatran Rhino.
Since the start of the Save our Sumatran Rhino campaign in 2007,
Honda Malaysia has visited 36 schools in Klang Valley, Penang, Johor,
Malacca and Kuantan. To date, Honda has reached some 7,000 primary
4 and 5 students with its environmental message.
Using the shy and elusive Sumatran Rhino, a creature unique to Malaysia
and Borneo, Honda Malaysia continues its crusade to raise awareness on
caring for the environment and living in harmony with Mother Nature.
In addition, the company’s essay and photo contest titled “Environment
& I” last year received almost 620 entries from schools. Many fun
interactive games such as Save the Sumatran Rhino roadshows, “Nature
Quest” online game contest and “Save the Rhino’s Home” contest were
also held to motivate children to learn more about the environment.
More information is available at Honda’s website, www.honda.com.my/
rhino/.
In early September 2009, Honda Malaysia gave talks at four schools to
increase awareness about environmental conservation and Sumatran
Rhinos, to more than 500 students from SK Seri Mutiara, SK Rapat
Setia, SJKC Yuh Hua and SK Tasek in Ipoh.
There were exciting and interactive activities with visual presentations,
footages of Sumatran Rhinos and on-the-spot quizzes that focused on
what students can do to help the environment in their daily lives and
to make them more proactive in doing their part in improving and
conserving the environment.
The project is part of Honda’s long-term commitment to the environment
along with its corporate social responsibility programme “Honda Dreams
Fund”, a non-binding scholarship to support underprivileged students to
pursue higher education and skills training.
Honda Malaysia Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Toru Takahashi said,
“We are committed to the caring and preservation of the environment,
and will continue to nurture the younger generations’ love for the
environment. These students are our future leaders and will inherit the
Earth. It is our responsibility to educate and encourage them to be more
environmental-friendly. To ensure Mother Earth stays beautiful, it is
of utmost importance that we inculcate the love and sense of urgency to
protect Mother Nature when they are at a young age.”
