WHY TOURISM, UH –
VISITORS, MATTER
Chamber Marketing Update
The recent news that Washington State’s
Tourism Office will close July 1st as part
of the Governor’s massive budget overhaul
comes at a time when tourism has never
meant more to the continued survival
of so many of our Island’s small businesses. While some of us may question
whether we might be “at capacity” those
few days in mid-July when our sidewalks
seem crowded, we can’t overlook the fact
that they also bring much-appreciated
spending and are a great reminder that
tourism, uh- visitors, bring vital dollars
into our local economy.
These visitors also provide an undeniable
stimulus that buoys our local economy.
Whether they shop, dine, rent kayaks, or
ride the Chilly Hilly, they have a direct impact that results in job creation and small
business growth as our local businesses
thrive.
So what does all of this mean to your business? Consider the following statistics
from last year’s Washington State Tourism Commission’s report to the Department of Commerce:
Tourism is a major industry in Washington State: According to Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) produced,

The all-day interactive trade show, with more than 60 exhibitors,
speakers, health screenings, fun demonstrations, and other unique
aspects, was held on Saturday January 29 at Woodward Middle

The event – in its sixth year - drew 700-plus attendees and featured
a wide array of interesting presenters.
Our thanks to keynote speaker Dr. Jonathon V. Wright, Medical
Director of the Tahoma Clinic in Renton, for his popular discussion
on the natural ways to boost your immune system, healthy aging
processes, and innovative ways to stay healthy during the winter.
Dr. Wright’s speech was complemented by Dr. Deanna Minich,

ARCHITECTURE
LAND PLANNING INTERIORS LANDSCAPE DESIGN
What kind of services do we provide?
Land Use and Site Planning: In today’s world of stricter land use codes and environmental regulations, you need people with experience in land use planning and site planning. Whether you are developing a large commercial site or building a home on a small
lot, we can help. We will look at the overall feasibility of the project. Then we work
with you on developing a Site Plan that is feasible and suited to your project needs.
Pre-design and Programming: Before design begins, we work with you to fully understand your goals for the project. We look at your space needs, project budget, time and
scheduling needs and code issues. We identify the opportunities and constraints that influence the project. We help you develop your building program before design begins, so
we know we are on the right track toward creating a project that works.
Architectural Design: If you ask us if we have ever designed the kind of project you
have in mind...our answer will probably be “yes”. But we regard each project as a fresh
opportunity for artful and technically excellent design solutions. The design begins with
your dreams and goals. We know that your environment will be an important resource
for you, whether it’s your home or place of business. As the design develops from conceptual sketches to a full set of drawings and specifications, your choices and concerns
are reflected in the design. We know your budget is a driving force and we evaluate
costs along the way. Like you, we expect excellence.
Landscape Design: Your outdoor surrounds are part of your environment and we see
the landscape as an integral part of the overall design. Your goals for your landscape are
where we begin. From the private residential garden to a 20-acre park, we use our
knowledge and design skills to create vital outdoor places.
Construction Administration: The success of your project from beginning to completion is our goal. During construction we are there, on site, on a regular basis, observing
the work in progress, reviewing project materials and shop drawings and evaluating options for proposed design changes. Our Construction Administration Services result in a
building quality with better value for you.

who share his vision to implement sustainability practices in the
restaurant — simply defined as “a way of producing and consuming food that ultimately promotes the continuous well-being of
ourselves and our planet.”
Local Harvest’s goal is to deliver delicious cuisine to your table
using a small carbon footprint. All of the dishes are reflective of
the eclectic surroundings of the Pacific Northwest and around the
world.
The menu includes gluten-free and vegetarian options. In February, gluten-free flatbread dough was introduced on the menu as a
choice for guests seeking a gluten free option.
Owner and Executive Chef Daniel Miller is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America located in Hyde Park, New York.
Local Harvest Restaurant is opened Tuesday-Saturday for lunch
from 11:30am-2:00pm and for dinner from 5:00pm-9:30pm.
Call 206-842-2006 for reservations. For more information visit

Chef/Owner Daniel Miller was Lisa Marie Presley’s private
chef. He has prepared dinners for Bob Hope, Dan Marino, and
President George Bush. Now his domain is Bainbridge Island.
He and his superb staff at Local Harvest Restaurant are committed to serving you exciting, mouth-watering dishes, using
produce from local farmers, with a dedication to practicing and
promoting environmental and social stewardship. Whether they
are braising organic short ribs for demi-glace, sautéing organic
spinach in sesame oil, or baking gluten-free pizzas in their wood
stove they and their staff want you to walk away knowing that
you will return time and time again..
Located in the Pavilion on Madison Avenue, Local Harvest
Restaurant opened July 2010. The restaurant’s menu constantly
changes to reflect the seasons and freshest ingredients. Many ingredients come from local farms, all of their meat is grass-fed and
raised without hormones or antibiotics and all of the fish is wild
and line caught. The restaurant makes their own bread, including
their flatbread dough.

I have been a psychotherapist for over 20 years on Bainbridge and
in Ballard. I see individuals, couples, families and teens. My practice is heart-centered and down to earth. I am very eclectic; trained
and certified in many models, including: EMDR, Somatic Transformation, grief counseling, “transition counseling”, hypnotherapy,
birth and pre-natal trauma and more. I use a collaborative approach,
minimal jargon and believe that my client is the expert on him or
herself. I am there to help, make suggestions and support. I love
my work. I am dedicated to it and I honor and respect the courage
it takes to embark upon a path of healing and self-discovery. I have
done my own “work” and believe that should be a pre-requisite for
counseling others. You can find me at: [email protected]
