Early Years - Nelson`s Journey
Early Years
Purple Picnic
Nelson's Journey is a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people
throughout Norfolk.
Based in Norwich, we were founded in 1997, since which time we have helped thousands
of children between the age of 0 to 17, who have experienced the death of a significant
person in their life e.g. parent or sibling. We aim to improve the emotional well being of the
children and young people we support.
Our Service
We Provide
• Increases self esteem by enabling children
and young people to meet others who
have been bereaved.
• Provides education about causes of death
and the events surrounding the funeral.
• Assists families in talking more openly.
• Enables children and young people to
express and understand emotions.
• Provides children and young people with
opportunities to remember the person
who has died.
• 1 :1 work with children and young people
• Therapeutic residential weekends, activity
days and NJ clubs
• Support and information for families
• Guidance for professionals working
directly with children and young people
• Training for professionals e.g. teachers,
police and NHS Staff
Stats to get your teeth into
Here are some of our biggest stats from 2015:
601 referrals made to
Nelson’s Journey from
family members, friends or
professionals supporting
bereaved children
44% increase (compared to
2014 figures) in the number
of referrals received where
the cause of death has been
reported as suicide
94% of children and young
people who attended
a Nelson’s Journey
therapeutic activity day or
weekend reported they felt
better about themselves.
The valuable contributions you raise during your Purple Picnic will
mean we are able to continue our work supporting bereaved
children and young people living in Norfolk. Thank you.

Nelson could visit you!
Purple fun
Remember to let us know when you plan to
hold your Purple Picnic as one lucky school
will receive a visit from our friendly mascot
Nelson the cat.
We have included a Nelson the Cat Face
mask for all your children to enjoy colouring
in. Just add string so they can use it
throughout the day!
Teddy bears picnic
This is perhaps the most classic theme for a
children’s picnic. Why not ask the children
to bring in their teddies for a special
fundraising picnic. Perhaps you can charge
to have the teddy as a ‘guest’ at their picnic
to start the fundraising total off?

You will also find in this pack Nelson’s
Treausre Map, this is a great way to raise
money quickly, simply charge parents/carers
a suggested £2.00 per square to guess
where Nelson has hidden his treasure!
Food with feelings
A great way to get children understanding
how the children we support feel, is
to incorporate ‘feeling faces’. Ask the
children what a sad, worried, scared or
happy face loks like? They can design and
create different emotions on biscuits, or
sandwiches before eating them!

me going through a hard time”

breathe again”
“I realised that I have been taking

friends and helped me realise I
didn’t kill my Dad, the cancer did”
It’s because of people like you we
are able to continue this vital work!
“Nelson’s Journey
let me see my
daughter’s
smile again”

Where is Nelson's treasure?
Nelson has hidden his treasure somewhere on the map overleaf, but can you guess where?
For a suggested £2 a go, guess which square Nelson’s treasure is hidden in. Make sure the
organiser chooses the winning square before you start selling them! We suggest the prize
to be 10% of the takings, if you would like to donate all of the money collected why not buy
a box of chocolates to give to the winner? Perhaps you know a baker who would like to
donate a cake as a prize?
Design your own treasure map, or use the
one we’ve created on the next page

Fundraising ideas
Bake our day Hold a bake off event, charge
people to enter and give the winner a prize
or a certificate, why not sell your cakes
afterwards to add even more money to your
fundraising pot.
Pump up the jam Create a Dance-a-thon
event. Whether it be a silent disco, a concert
or why not Zumba your way to fitness, get
sponsors and don’t forget to gift aid your
sponsorship.
Make a splash You will always find people
who want their cars washed, charge them a
fee and wash cars in your lunch break or at
the weekend.
Students vs teachers Have a quiz against
a teacher and run a sweepstake on who
you think will win. Perhaps the winner gets
to take a class instead of the teacher one
afternoon?
Bitter sweet challenge Fill a large jar with
sweets and ask people to guess how many
are in the jar. The lucky winner gets to
keep all of the sweets! Make it even more
appropriate and choose purple sweets.
Picnic games Whilst having your picnic,
why not host your own games, it could be
anything from playing cards and chess, to
Wii/Xbox tournaments or if you are feeling
active how about a game of rounders,
cricket or football?
Food eating competition Fancy being the next
Man VS Food? (or Woman for that matter).
Challenge yourself to eat a huge plate of
food against the clock or perhaps take on
the dry cracker challenge?
Be a real smoothie Waxing, cutting and
shaving hair. These are all great ways of
raising peoples eyebrows... often the more
you have to get rid of, the more people pay
to see it disappear!
Nelson's treasure Utilise Nelson’s Treasure
Map (included in your pack) as a fun activity
to raise additonal funds .
Colour in this fun cat mask
and once complete cut out,
tie string through the holes
within the doted area and
wear your mask with pride
at your picnic.
