MOUNTAIN VIEW’S OVERTIME FITNESS OFFERS GYM SPACE FOR THE YOUNGER SET
By Amber Cleave
T
he generation raised in
a virtual world of iPods,
Internet, video games and
digital cameras now has gym that
caters to real-world concerns.
“Overtime Fitness is like a
sports club exclusively for teenagers,” said Patrick Ferrell, CEO
of the company, which recently
opened its gym at 1625 N. Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View.
Ferrell, a Los Altos Hills resident,
said his teenage daughter was the
inspiration behind the fitness
center. Tired of hearing about
harassment at the all-ages gym his
daughter was attending, Farrell
decided to open a gym where teens
could work out in a comfortable,
safe and fun environment.
According to Ferrell, Overtime Fitness does everything
in its power to make the young
adults feel comfortable. Through
a survey Farrell conducted with
Bay Area teens, he determined
that girls do not feel comfortable
showering or changing publicly.
So, in Overtime Fitness’ serene
and spa-like girls’ locker rooms,
he installed showers with double
curtains so the girls have complete privacy while they shower
and change.
The fitness center offers all the
old-fashioned athletic equipment,
but with a twist: Treadmills with
individual televisions have several
channels picked through teen surveys, such as MTV, MTV2, Fox,
ESPN, ESPN2, Comedy Central
and E; bicycles with graphics that
display a virtual course, as well
as the ability to race other bikers
and track individual progress; a
giant four-sided rock climbing
wall with four different levels of
difficulty; and a physical video
game arcade supplied with DDR,
Kilowatt and Trazer. They’re all
virtual games that require physical exertion.
Ferrell said of the altered
machines, “In a way, I acquiesced
to children and their love of video
games and television. I said, ‘Fine,
you can have it, but there’ll be no
couch potatoes around here.’”
The fitness center does more
than help teenagers stay active in a
comfortable environment; it also

promotes their general well-being

conjunction with Stanford’s wellness groups — that cover a range
of topics, including steroids, sleep

health and athletic topics like hiking, warming up and skin care.

How to be merry in
cold and flu season
POOR DIET A BIG REASON
FOR WEAKENED IMMUNE
SYSTEM DURING
THE HOLIDAYS
By Flavia Kreis
A
utumn is here and so comes
the sneezing, coughing and
aching. As we all know,
during the fall and winter our
body’s immune
system starts
to suffer from
various forms
of flu and cold
viruses.
Did you ever
ask yourself
why this is hap- Flavia Kreis
pening to you
every year? And why do you have
to feel so miserable?
First, I’ll give a quick description of how the immune system
works. Most people have heard
of white blood cells, and that
these attack invaders in the body.
White cells are actually a combination of three main types of
cells, called B-cells, T-cells and
macrophages. Each has a different function, and collectively
they make our immune system
a well-armed defense against
invaders.
When B-cells come into contact with an antigen (an antigen
is some form of toxin, bacteria,
or foreign blood cell in the body),
the B-cells grow larger and divide
into more cells which secrete specific antibodies that latch onto
the invader. These antibodies
cannot destroy the invader, but
they make its life more difficult
by preventing it from entering body cells. Because a virus
requires body cells to reproduce,
this seriously hampers its ability
to propagate itself.
Next we have T-cells. These
come in three kinds: T-helpers, T-suppressors, and NK
(natural killers). The NK cells
can produce toxins which will
destroy an invader. T-helpers
help the B-cells fight more
invaders, while T-suppressors
stop everything once the invader is destroyed. So T-cells in
essence fight by helping B-cells,
by actively trying to destroy the
invader, and by stopping things
once the battle is won.
And at the end, the macrophage cells swallow up and digest
what is left of the invader, which
is waste material.
What prevents the immune
system from working effectively?
Digestive problems caused by
bad food choices. The categories
of these are: sugars, bad fats, caffeine and alcohol.
The next question is, when do
we have these foods the most?
Holidays! That means the holiday season, which starts around
Halloween and ends the beginning of the New Year.
Throughout this period, most
people on and off have more
desserts, candies, fattening
foods, caffeine and alcohol.
This means the immune system
will be busy fighting internal
toxins created by us rather than
fighting a real invader like a
virus or a bacterium. On top of
this internal turmoil, we might
have some emotional stress created by meeting with family,
holiday preparation, travel, and
so on. And stress also weakens
the immune system.
How do we escape such a fate?
We must organize ourselves by
taking an appropriate supplementation — examples include
digestive enzymes, probiotics,
vitamin C, and echinacea — by
reducing our exposure to bad
food, and by minimizing stress
in the healthiest ways possible.
As an additional suggestion,
avoid mental or verbal conflict
with friends and family members.
Instead, start a conversation that
all people can relate to. Go out and
do something together as a group,
something everyone likes to do,
such as walk the dog, take the kids
to a park, or play a board game. Be
positive and merry! After all, what
are the holidays about if not for
love, sharing and tolerance.

BACKS BEAR THE BURDEN OF BAD HABITS, AND PAIN IS USUALLY THE RESULT
By Dr. Barry Hansen
Q:
A:
Why is back pain so common? More importantly,
what can I do about it?
Low back pain is not one
thing; it’s
many things,
from
occasional muscle
strain from
lifting something heavy to
osteoporosis or
thinning of the Dr. Barry Hansen
bones, which
can cause small crush or painful “compression” fractures. Low
back pain is one of the most frequently encountered complaints
in a primary physician’s office.
Fortunately, most cases are easily
treated with rest; medication for
pain, inflammation and muscle
spasm; and some physical therapy.
Many cases of acute low back are
completely resolved in a few weeks
and the discomfort may actually be gone in a few days, but the
actual healing takes longer.
If your doctor recommends
surgery, be sure to get two surgical opinions as well as an opinion
from a physical medicine specialist
before undergoing back surgery.
The surgery, even in the best hands,
may be difficult and may cause
scarring of tissues, which can eventually adversely affect the mechanical properties of your back.
Q:
A:
I’m pretty fit and not overweight, so why does my
lower back still give me pains?
Acute back pain can occur
in someone who has never
had much problem with their
back. They may not be overweight
and they may actually be in
very good physical condition. The
problem has to do with how we are
built. Low back pain occurs much
more frequently than upper back
pain because your upper spine
is stabilized by your rib cage and
the muscles surrounding them.
Your lower back, however, is all
by itself. Its range of motion when
you bend forward is much greater
than that of your upper spine.
It has no other boney support
around it. While it is bigger and
thicker than your upper spine, it
also has to support more weight.
All this causes increased mechanical stresses which result in torn
muscles, ruptured discs and ligaments, and occasionally fractures,
even in healthy individuals.
around our abdomens. That “spare
tire” tends to hang down in front
and your lower back has to support
all that extra weight. It is under
constant tension just while you’re
walking around. When you bend
over, the burden on your back
increases. If you pick something
up, it intensifies. At some point,
the muscles of your lower back
will not be able to stand the strain
and they will tear, just like a piece
of paper. This causes inflammation of all the other surrounding
muscle fibers, which in turn causes
spasm, stiffness and pain.
Q:
A:
Do our spinal discs actually tear?
Unfortunately, yes. When
we lift something and twist
to the side to set it down, the
excessive pressure on our spines
may cause an actual tear in one
of our discs. These discs separate
each of our vertebrae and are built

like donuts (forgive the junk food
analogy). They have a firm outer
rim and a soft center for cushioning the weight and allowing some
flexibility of our spine. The outer
rim can and will tear, sometimes
causing the center to protrude.
There is not extra space around
the spine, so very often the protrusion will push on a nerve, causing
pain or weakness in the back and
legs. Even if nothing gets pinched,
the disc is now flatter than before,
which changes the mechanical
properties of the back, making
recurrent injury more likely and
more common.
Q:
A:
What’s the best way to prevent chronic back pain?
It is the same silver bullet
as for so many other
health issues. We need to lose
excess weight, keep our abdominal muscles strong through exercise (because they help stabilize
your lower spine), and learn to
lift things correctly with our legs
— not our backs. If you don’t
take corrective steps and keep
re-injuring your back, the pain
can become chronic.

reast Cancer Awareness
Month is over, but Dr. Cindy
Russell didn’t give up her
inquiry at the end of October.
Russell, a plastic surgeon with
Camino Medical Group in Mountain View, has for several years had
an abiding interest in breast cancer
and whether it is linked to harmful
environmental toxins. It was performing reconstruction for breast
cancer survivors — and observing
the survivors themselves — that
caused her to become interested in
finding the source of the disease.
“I observed younger and younger women coming into my office,”
she says, “and I had a curiosity
about why that could be.”
Russell’s research and experience, which includes sitting on the
county’s Environmental Health
Committee, led her to the conclusion that toxins in the environment
were in part causing breast cancer
and other cancers in women. And
she believes that these toxins are
coming from substances used in
all aspects of everyday life, including cosmetics, perfumes, air fresheners and cleaning products
“What we don’t realize,” she
said, “is that indoor air pollution
is as bad as outdoor.”
In a series of lectures for Camino Medical Group, and every
day with her patients, Russell is
trying to spread the word about
environmental toxins.
“The best thing to do is be
informed, and take a precautionary approach,” she says.
She pinpoints several chemicals,
commonly found in products
across the mainstream market, as
being particularly harmful.
Phythalates are on the top of her
list. Commonly found in makeup
products, nail polish and plastics,
these chemicals act like estrogen
once they are ingested into a
woman’s body. For several years
now, scientists and doctors have
known that too much estrogen can
cause breast cancer.
Dioxins, found in certain brands
of pesticides, as well as chlorinebased solvents and bug and rodent
killers, concern Russell as well, and
she cites recent studies showing a
possible link to dioxin exposure
and numerous maladies, including
Parkinson’s disease, sterility and
birth defects.
She also targets petroleum-based
solvents, found in cleaning products, as worrisome because they
contain small amounts of known
carcinogens and don’t biodegrade
once they are in the ground. She
recommends using “vegetablebased, biodegradable products.”
In Russell’s medical practice,
you won’t find any products that
are petroleum-based. She says her
office is equipped with soaps and
air fresheners that are “citrusbased products that don’t contain
any synthetic ingredients.”
The ‘smart consumer’
approach
Russell urges a “smart consumer” approach, and says there are a
number of “green” pesticides and
cleaners on the market. She also
notes that pest control companies
increasingly offer environmentally
safe versions of their chemicals.
Russell’s research led her to
align with a San Francisco-based
organization, the Breast Cancer
Fund, which has been researching
environmental toxins for years.
Kevin Donegan, spokesman
for the group, says that there are
“close to 100,000 chemicals in use
that haven’t been fully tested” for
their effects on human beings.
Harmful chemicals, such as
phythalates, get stored in a
woman’s body fat and can also
be transmitted to a child if she is
breast feeding, he said.
However, Donegan points to several positive examples of improved
understanding of so-called environmental toxins. Around the
country, states are imposing stricter standards on the beauty industry’s use of chemicals and toxins,
as a way to make up for the federal
government’s traditionally loose
regulation of the beauty industry.
California made an important
step in that direction when Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a
landmark bill this fall, the California Safe Cosmetics Act, requiring companies to notify the state
when they use chemicals linked to
cancer and birth defects.
Additionally, nearly 400 beauty
companies have signed a “Compact for Safe Cosmetics,” which
is a pledge to eliminate hazardous
materials from their products.
OPI, the nail polish industry’s bestselling brand, agreed in August
2006 to remove all dibutyl phthalates, known reproductive toxins,
from the company’s products.
Both Donegan and Russell recommend education as the best
way to prevent exposure to the
thousands of hazardous chemicals on the market.
