A Message from Lisa Thompson, MPP of Huron-Bruce
2015 marks a special year for 4-H members and provides members and
alumnus alike with a unique opportunity: To reflect on both the 100-year history
of 4-H in Ontario, and to consider the ways that our involvement with the
organization has shaped us personally.
As a Huron 4-H alumnus myself, I know that its
impact on my life has been lifelong and inspiring. I
am a former member of several beef and lifestyle
clubs, including the Blyth-Belgrave Beef Club. In
addition, I have participated in three 4-H exchanges,
the 4-H Leadership Camp and the National Careers
Conference in
Winnipeg. These experiences, along with the
countless others that 4-H has given me, have made me
very proud to count myself a part of the 4-H family.
So grateful have I been for the opportunities 4-H
has provided me, that I decided to do all I could
through my personal and professional lives to give
back. As an OMAFRA employee, I had the
opportunity to support the 4-H programs in Peel and
Halton Regions, as well as at the provincial level. I
have also had the privilege of serving with the Ontario
4-H Foundation and am a Past Chair.
As a MPP, I continue to be a strong advocate for the engagement of youth in
agriculture and rural Ontario. My Private Member’s Resolution, which received
all-party support during its second reading, encouraged the Ministry of Education
to include a mandatory component in the grades 9 and 10 Guidance and Career
Education Curriculum on agri-food career opportunities.
I would like to offer my most sincere congratulations to all of you on the
completion of your 2015 projects, and to the award recipients as well. I encourage
all Huron 4-H members to be proud of their involvement and to take advantage of
the opportunities that 4-H provides. I will always pledge my head, heart, health,
and hands to the service of my community.

A Message from Paul Gowing, Warden, County of Huron
On behalf of Council and the County of Huron I offer my sincere and heartfelt
congratulations on the 100 years celebration of the 4-H Program in
Ontario.
Huron County is a leader in numerous areas. Breathtaking
coastline, lush countryside, beaches, quaint towns and villages are
major attractions for tourists and newcomers. Outstanding regional
theatres, museums and cultural activities combine with unique,
established events to draw visitors from all over the world.
However, we should not forget the wonderful local grown
food – from our farms to your tables. Huron County is the most
agriculturally productive County in Ontario. We produce more
agricultural products than each of the four Atlantic Provinces in
Canada. Since our population is only around 60,000, this is no small
achievement and something to be very proud of indeed. Plowing matches and Agricultural
Fairs have been a part of this agricultural progress and history for well over a century. They
have evolved from farmers showing off their ploughing
techniques; to preserving the art and skill of match plowing. They also advance the skills
involved, promoting the safe and efficient use of farm machinery, and encouraging improved
farm productivity and yield efficiency through proper seedbed preparation and soil
management. And of course, we cannot forget the 4-H Program which has come a long way
since the Department of Agriculture donated 12 purebred eggs, potatoes and seed to
Manitoba youth to raise and grow in 1913.
4-H has a long history of helping youth "learn by doing" and has been a part of the
agricultural culture in Huron County for many years. When youth are thoughtfully guided
through the “do-reflect-apply” process, there is tremendous potential for positive youth
development and growth. 4-H focuses on teaching new topics and life skills development
and learning in a relaxed setting.
But without volunteers, the 4-H program would not be possible and would not be the
first class grass roots organization of leaders building leaders that it is. Your time, energy,
ideas and enthusiasm in teaching our youth is both commendable and greatly appreciated.
Without your mentoring, the youth of Huron County would not see beyond themselves
and or how their actions affect personal relationships, their community and society as a
whole. Your commitment to Huron County’s youth development enables them to meet the
challenges of tomorrow and to reach their full potential. For this, we as a community are
forever in your debt.
Best wishes and continued success to the 4-H program for the future and thank you for
inviting me to your celebration.
