THE STORY OF
In March 2013, nightlife expert and host of Spike-TV’s Bar Rescue,
Jon Taffer, entered struggling Garner restaurant and bar,
Characters Quarters. Taffer, along with Celebrity Chef Brian Duffy
and renowned mixoligist Russell Davis, transformed Characters Quarters
into MoonRunners Saloon - a prohibition-era themed restaurant and bar
with exciting menu items and specialty moonshine drinks. The process
was filmed and shown to a national TV audience in the Season 3 episode
of Bar Rescue ‘Characters Assassination’.
The new prohibition motif has been a big hit in the area since it’s launch.
On one wall hangs a picture of an infamous moonshiner and native North
Carolinian, the late Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton. In the corner are souvenir
flasks and Mason jars with the restaurant’s logo – all for sale. And
a moonshine cask sits behind the bar, with sneaky design features such
as hidden compartments for dispensing liquor that give the restaurant a
speakeasy feel. MoonRunners Saloon is now recognized as THE place to go
for moonshine and specialty moonshine-infused cocktails.
Jon Taffer has listed MoonRunners Saloon as one of his Top 10 Toughest
Rescues and Bar Rescue and has since come back to Garner to film
a new episode titled “Back to the Bar.”
