From the Pastor
My first words of the Easter season are words of gratitude to all those who
worked so hard to ensure that the rites of the Triduum and Easter Sunday were
celebrated with dignity and grace. I am so grateful, first of all, to the priests who
presided at each of the major liturgical events last week. Father Simon led all the
priests in the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday in which
Christ’s command to love one another was symbolized in the washing of the feet of
twelve of our parishioners. Father Simon also presided at the beautiful and moving
Stations of the Cross on Good Friday afternoon. I led the faithful through the
Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday evening. And Father
Campana had the great privilege of celebrating the most beautiful of the Church’s liturgies, the Easter
Vigil, where catechumens and candidates were baptized, received into full communion with the Church,
confirmed and received their first Holy Communion.
Such splendid liturgies depend, however, on more than just the clergy. Paul Scavone, especially,
puts in countless hours preparing servers, worship guides and the settings for the Rites. Queen of All
Saints Basilica itself provides a spectacular environment in which to celebrate the sacred rites. It’s a real
church, as many visitors tell me when they visit. They can hardly keep from falling over backward as they
look up at the high ceiling. Our church also provides also a wonderful acoustic for the prayers and songs of
the liturgy.
That acoustic was superbly used by the cantors, several choirs and musicians of the Basilica under
the able direction of Dr. Ken Sotak and Paul Scavone. Those who participated truly experienced the
gradual movement from the promising celebration of the Last Supper through the sorrow of Christ’s
Passion and Death to his triumphant Resurrection on Easter Sunday morning. This is precisely what’s
supposed to happen at these rites: the faithful are to experience for themselves and within the community of
the church each of the distinctive elements of the Paschal Mystery.
The other ministers of the liturgies also made significant contributions to their beauty and integrity.
Sister Anne Kathleen and her helpers prepared the decoration of the Basilica and all the various implements
that are needed in the liturgies. The lectors carefully prepared their readings so that they could proclaim the
word of God with confidence and conviction. The extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion faithfully
attended their assignments and contributed greatly to the smooth and efficient distribution of the Eucharist
to the thousands who attended the liturgies. And all of the ushers made all those who came to celebrate the
Easter mysteries at Queen of All Saints Basilica feel warmly welcomed.
Each of the three days of the Triduum began with the respective Morning Prayer of the Church’s
official prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. The entire school community participated in Morning Prayer of
Holy Thursday. In fact I was very pleased with the number who attended each day. And on Saturday
morning, after Morning Prayer in the Basilica and the Easter egg hunt on the school playground, the
Basilica welcomed the families of the parish and their Easter baskets to be blessed before sharing the first
meal of Easter together in their homes.
On Easter Sunday itself, thousands flocked to the Basilica in the beautiful sunshine to mark the
Lord’s Resurrection. They were greeted warmly and treated to a spectacular display of sights and sounds.
After having welcomed so many, I collapsed after the last Mass as I’m sure many of the others responsible
for our liturgies did as well. I am so very grateful that we here at Queen of All Saints Basilica appreciate
good, well-planned and carefully celebrated liturgy so much that we are willing to spend a great deal of
effort and resources ensuring that our prayer is worthy. I hope it will always be that way. Happy Easter to

The Canonizations of Pope John XXIII & Pope John Paul II
Where Were You?
Something to think about…….
This weekend we celebrate the canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. This marks a historic
moment for the Catholic Church worldwide. While each has had an enormous impact on the global Church,
interestingly both also played a role locally, in the Catholic Church of Chicago, and directly with Queen of All
Saints.
In 1979 Pope John Paul II visited Chicago and, among other things, said
Mass in Grant Park. Countless Chicagoans were touched by this moment,
and a number of Chicagoans, among them Sister Anne Kathleen and
Monsignor Pollard, had a direct role in helping bring a part of the
Chicago community together to take part in the Grant Park event.
Twenty-seven years before that it was Pope John XXIII who, on March
26, 1962, approved the recommendation of the Congregation of Rites
in Vatican City and signed the official decree conferring the title and
privileges of a Basilica on our own Queen of All Saints, as of that
moment, Basilica.

Religious Education Classes
This Sunday is the last class for students attending the Sunday sessions of Religious Education.
We will be ending this last session with a closing prayer service in the gym at 10:00. Parents are most

Due to the 1st Communion Bread Celebration on Tuesday, April 29th, the last class for the
Tuesday sessions of Religious Education will be May 6th. The closing prayer service will be held in
the Basilica at 5:30. Students with perfect attendance will be awarded their certificates at this prayer
service.
We are saying good-bye to some of our faculty this year. Although they are leaving us, we are
assured that they will continue to leave their mark on the future Church. They are:

The class who brought in the most boxes of cereal per capita was Mrs. Michelle Ramirez’
Tuesday 1st Grade. They will be awarded their end of the year pizza party in recognition of their
achievement. Also, this day is a very special day in the history of the Church. We recognize the
canonization of two modern day Popes: St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II. We will celebrate these
two remarkable men during our prayer service.
RE Registration for 2014- 2015
Registration for the coming school year is now underway. All forms for registration may be
found on the parish website. Simply download all forms and bring them to the RE Office. Be sure to
register before Thursday June 12 to receive the Early Bird discount. Families are asked to pay a
minimum of $75 at the time of registration. Since this is the Year of Strong Catholic Families, we are
hoping that many of you would consider volunteering in the program. I promise you that your
rewards will be great.
Treasure Island Vacation Bible School
We will be beginning registration for Vacation Bible School this week. Watch for flyers and
posting on the parish website for details. The event will be held the week of June 23.

Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new
members into the Body of Christ. The Sacrament of Baptism
for infants is celebrated on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each
month at 1:30 PM. Please come into the rectory to schedule
the baptism for your child. Prior to the baptism, the parents are
invited to attend a baptismal preparation session. If an adult or
a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should
be made with one of the priests.

wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a
Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints
Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic
Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints
Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage
in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the
parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of
marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before
the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

teachers of the apostles, the communal life, the breaking of
the bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42-47).

God has given us an undiminished inheritance, safeguarded
