Celebrating a Joint
Success Story
The year 2009 comes in with plenty of ceremonial occasions. Both nations, the Federal Republic of
Germany and the People’s Republic of China celebrate their 60th birthday. The two countries can
be very proud of this anniversary and their development over the last decades. Today, China and
Germany stand among the three biggest export nations in the world. A position they could not have
achieved without their extensive bilateral co-operation. Germany and China have become mutually
indispensable business partners on the global market over the past six decades. However, the roots
of trade relations between the two countries exceed their stately existence by far.
In ancient times, people from Europe and the Far East utilised the legendary Silk Road for their
first commercial relations. The discovery of a seaway in the 16th century enabled tradesmen to
transfer goods between Europe and the Far East on a larger scale. A further big step forward for the
intercontinental exchange was the establishment of an air path. This succeeded primarily in 1926
when Lufthansa managed to finish off its first flight from Germany to China.
The outstanding milestone in the recent history of Sino-German commercial relations is
doubtlessly China’s opening for global trade starting in the late 1970s. The well-known Canton
Fair in Guangzhou can be seen as a symbol for this. It has been China’s first exhibition facilitating
international companies to present their products. Today, the semi-annual event is the country’s
biggest tradeshow and exposes the largest product variety. The 106th Canton Fair is right around
the corner and starts on the 15th of October. Let’s hope that China uses this opportunity to further
facilitate free trade and ease the travel policies for foreigners.
The Canton Fair also underlines the importance of South China and the Pearl River Delta in
particular. The region known as the "world’s workbench” has blossomed into one of the key driving
factors for the Chinese economy. During the course of this, more and more international companies
invest in the region and establish new branch offices. Being the GCC chairman in this dynamic
business environment is a great honour, and I am very much looking forward to exercising my new
office and participating in the further economic growth of this exciting place.
Enjoy reading!
