Arts Center is in the historic railroad freight depot
on Lakeville St. in central Petaluma. The Arts Center

A Professional Approach to Painting

Build a solid foundation of professional techniques not
covered in most art classes. Starting with concrete methods
for creating good composition and color harmony, learn
painting techniques used by illustrators and designers.

William Eaken has created illustrations for clients like Lucasfilm,
Saga and Paramount Pictures. He has taught painting throughout
his career, most recently at Sienna Ranch in Lafayette.
Paint or Draw from a Clothed Model

Draw or paint from a live clothed model in a noninstructional open studio. Appropriate for all ages and
skill levels. Drop-in okay. Bring your easel and medium of
your choice. Oil Painters: Only Gamsol allowed in studio
(no turpentine or other alternative solvents).

Expand your range of watercolor skills. Improvise with dry
and wet materials. Explore dynamic compositions and
layers of color. Experiment with pouring and blending
colors directly on the paper to create the illusion of light.
Paint from nature, including wild animal and unusual
garden themes. For all skill levels. Students purchase
materials from list provided upon registration.
Susan St. Thomas teaches painting classes at art centers and
colleges throughout the Bay Area. Her watercolors have been
widely published and exhibited internationally.
Painting with Pastels

Fee: $90 Materials Cost: $20
Discover the thrill of working with pastels. There is no
other medium with pastels’ vibrancy and subtlety of color.
A great medium for expression, whether still life, landscape,
abstract or experimental. Learn about different types of
pastels and paper, and the use of fixative. Examples of
styles will be presented along with technique and composition. Class includes individual work time and one-onone instructor assistance.
Katherine Plank has been painting and teaching art for the past
25 years.
The Path of Photography, Part I:
From Light to Consciousness

Light is our brush! Learn skills and craft for both traditional
and digital photography. Brief presentations of the history,
influences and directions of photography will be integrated
with assignments that concentrate on light and how to
use it. Gain insight into the spirit of making photographic
art, as you pursue your individual vision and style.
Note: Students should have a basic understanding of
photography and the camera they are planning to use in
this class. Beginners are welcome!
Lino Block Printing on Paper & Fabric
C at h e r i n e R i c h a r d s o n
5 weeks: Tuesdays, Oct 12-Nov 16, 6:30-8:30 pm
(No class Nov 2)
Fee: $90 Materials Cost: $50
Make an original design on paper or fabric using a
carved linoleum printing block you create. In the style of
wood-block printing, easily transfer a design onto a lino
block, a material similar to an eraser and easy to carve.
Once the carving is complete, discover how to use it to
print on paper or fabric using water-soluble inks.
Catherine Richardson is an award-winning artist, currently
adjunct faculty at Santa Rosa Junior College. She was awarded
the Sonoma County Emerging Artist Award in 2006.
The Path of Photography, Part II:
More From Light to Consciousness

This class will build upon Part I but can be taken on its
own.
Explore what it is to be a creative person and how to use
creativity to enhance life and make better photographs.
Build your photographic skill set and acquire more tools.
Learn to connect with your subject. Note: Students
should have a basic understanding of photography and
the camera they are planning to use in this class.

3 weeks: Mondays, Sep 13-27, 6-9pm
Fee: $95 Materials Cost: $35
Pique Assiette is an old art form that uses china, broken
crockery, baubles and glass to create mosaics. You’ll
mosaic a stepping stone, which can also be used as a
tabletop. Learn how to design your project, cut glass,
china and tiles and set the pieces in mortar and grout.
Bring plates, saucers, tidbits, shells, and treasures to
include in your project.
Sueann Bettison Sher has been a clay and mosaic artist for more
than 20 years. Her work has been shown throughout California.
Fused Glass Tile Making Workshop

1 day workshop: Oct 2, 10am-1pm, artist’s studio in Napa
Fee: $50 Materials Cost: $15
Create fun fused glass tiles in the artist’s Napa studio.
Design, cut, assemble and fuse different types of glass
while learning about the properties and history of glass.
Note: Fused tiles need to be picked up at a later date as
it takes 24 hours for the kiln firing process.
Fused Glass Plate Making Workshop

1 day workshop: Oct 9, 10am-1pm, artist studio in Napa
Fee: $50 Materials Cost: $15
Design, cut, assemble and fuse different types of glass to
make a beautiful fused glass plate at the artist’s studio in
Napa. Note: Fused plates need to be picked up at a later
date as it takes 48 hours for the kiln firing process.
Patti Wessman has spent more than 30 years working in clay
and the last decade working in glass. She has received a
number of public art commissions and has both glasswork and
ceramic tile murals in public spaces.
Giant Puppet Construction &
Mask Making

mask makers $10
Create colorful giant puppets and masks that can be
used for Petaluma’s El Día de los Muertos procession.
Sculpt faces out of clay and learn how to apply paper
maché to the forms. Bring fabric, house paint, newspaper, brown paper bags and Styrofoam chips.
Kat Lilith apprenticed with the Wise Fool Puppet Intervention in
2001 and has been teaching community giant puppet construction
workshops ever since.
Murray Rockowitz is well known among collectors of fine art
portrait photography. He brings his years of experience in
photography and life into the classroom to inspire, teach and
learn along with his students.

This information-packed workshop takes the artist
through the most common mistakes made and pitfalls
encountered
when submitting work to juried exhibitions. Learn why 20
percent of entries are disqualified before the juror ever
sees the work and how to increase your own odds.
Making Art in a Series
Creative Sewn Book Bindings

4 weeks: Sundays, Oct 31-Nov 21, 1-4pm
Fee: $100 Materials cost: $15
Easily learn four different bookbinding techniques.
Using provided papers and thread, make several small
pamphlet books in the first class. Next, learn Japanese
stab binding, commonly used for photo albums or poetry
chapbooks. Session three covers long-stitch binding,
incorporating folding techniques and segments bound
together through a soft cover with a spine. Enhance these
books with beads and embroidery stitches. Finally, learn
Coptic binding, a chain-stitch exposed spine structure.
Emily Marks is a bookbinding and paper art teacher. Her work
has been in exhibits throughout the country as well as internationally.
Household Nicho/Shrine Making

1 day workshop: Sunday, Sep 26, 1-4pm

In this one-day workshop, create a beautiful shrine for
your home or garden to remember those you have loved,
whether human or animal. Nichos are small shrines or
remembrances made of objects that can be collected
like gems, rocks, shells, photos, jewelry, feathers, beads,
nails that remind you of the one you wish to remember.
Kristine McFarland a.k.a. Bella la Vida is an artist who by day
works in the world of auto racing and by night creates colorful
shrines in her studio to help others honor the memory of their
loved ones. Kristine will be a featured artist in a book on Day of
the Dead by Renee Mallett to be published in 2011 by Schiffer
Publishing.
Improv Comedy

What makes some improv scenes work, while others fall
flat? Come and find out! Develop your improv chops. Let
go of preconceived ideas about comedy; learn how to set
the scene and become a character. You’ll be amazed at
what makes improv comedy truly funny.
Hilary Moore has been acting, teaching and directing improv
in Sonoma County for many years. She currently performs and
directs with Petaluma Readers Theater.

Mark Edwards has been teaching art in the Bay Area for 20
years including the EXCEL program at Sonoma State. He has
illustrated three children’s books.
Creating a series of artwork serves many purposes for
the artist: examining personal experience, making a
statement, reworking a technique, mastering the art of
creating gallery-quality work, or simply practicing your
craft. Examine the work of professional artists who have
successfully created art in series and examine the benefits of creating your own work that way.

Learn Photoshop CS5 from an Adobe Certified Expert
(ACE). Gain a solid understanding of Photoshop in an
easy to follow lecture format, with lots of demonstrations.
Learn how to import and organize your digital images.
Discover how to color correct, retouch digital photos,
work with layers and masks, adjust exposure, dodge and
burn, use RAW files and much more. No prior knowledge
of Photoshop is needed. Experienced users will also benefit from the many tips, tricks and practical exercises.

short hours, you’ll learn how to build a working website.
Follow along with the lecture/demonstrations as we set
up our account in WordPress, choose a domain name
and add a design to our site. See how easy it is to add
text, images and movies. Learn how to create new pages,
add a photo gallery and even incorporate a blog. No
technical experience required.

Make holiday gifts for family and friends while you
explore the wonderful world of clay! Make boxes, candlesticks, picture frames, pots, plates and bowls while you
learn ceramics. Then make your creations shine with
texture and glazing techniques. All work will be fired on
site in the Arts Center’s kiln in time for holiday gift giving.
Sueann Bettison Sher has taught ceramics at Petaluma
Montessori School, Lehman Elementary School, and the Sonoma
State EXCEL program.
