ITINERARY
BLD = BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER
JULY 21 - BELIZE CITY
Upon arrival at the airport you will be transferred to
the Tropical Education Center at the Belize Zoo. The
Tropical Education Center was developed based on the
belief that education and awareness are fundamental to
wildlife conservation. The Belize Zoo and the Tropical
Education Center was started in 1983 as an effort to
provide a home for a collection of wild animals which
had been used in making a documentary about tropical

JULY 22 - YAXHA
Depart for Guatemala in the morning and arrive in Yaxha
in time for lunch. Afternoon visit at a school to meet the
students and teachers. Arrive at El Sombrero Ecolodge in
time for dinner. The ecolodge promotes the development
of local communities by sustainably managing the natural
resources at the Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park
which is where one season of the popular CBS show
“Survivor” was filmed. The site is the third-largest known
Classic Maya site in all of Guatemala. Yaxha was at its
height of importance between A.D. 300-900 and has a
twin pyramid complex, nine acropoli, and more than 500

JULY 23 - YAXHA
Visit Guatemalan green schools and complete service
learning projects with local students and teachers.

JULY 24 - TIKAL
Full day visit to Tikal which contains some of the most
fascinating archaeological remains of the ancient Maya
Civilization. Tikal National Park is the largest excavated
site in the American continent and is comprised of 222
square miles of jungle surrounding the ceremonial center.
If time permits, visit several sustainable forestry projects
including a nut tree cooperative in Ixlu and wood artisans
in El Remate. Overnight at El Sombrero Ecolodge. (BLD)
JULY 25 - TOBACCO CAYE
Early departure for Belize and Dangriga. Transfer by
boat to Tobacco Caye. The largest Marine Reserve in
Belize, SWCMR covers an area of over 117,000 acres in
which Tobacco Caye is situated. Surrounded by some
of the world’s richest biodiversity, Tobacco Caye will
be your base for marine exploration. The Belize Barrier
Reef wraps around Tobacco Caye, providing safe and
convenient access from shore. Late afternoon snorkel off
the end of the island. Later, there will be a night snorkel
for all of those who are interested in stepping off the
dock into a nocturnal world of cephalopods, moray eels,
arthropods, and echinoderms. Overnight at Tobacco Caye

JULY 26 - TOBACCO CAYE
Start the day off with some mangrove snorkeling. Then,
visit Man O’ War Caye Bird Sanctuary, a governmentmonitored bird sanctuary and nesting site for the
Magnificent Frigate. This is the only nesting site in
Belize for the Brown Booby and is also home to Whitecrowned Pigeons. Lunch will be on Southwater Caye,
then you will visit Carrie Bow Caye and the Smithsonian
field station which allows immediate access to reef
environments, seagrass habitats and mangrove islands.
Go for a snorkel on the reef upon return to Tobacco
Caye. Overnight at Tobacco Caye Lodge. (BLD)
JULY 27 - BELIZE CITY
Early morning snorkel from the island, then have some
time to shower and get ready to depart. Travel by boat
to Dangriga and then head to the Tropical Education
Center, stopping at Blue Hole National Park en route.
The Blue Hole was formed by the collapse of an
underground limestone cave. Take a night tour of the
Belize Zoo this evening to experience the activity of
the many nocturnal animals at the zoo such as jaguars,
margays, ocelots and kinkajous. Overnight at Tropical

JULY 28 - FAREWELL!
Hike in the savannah forest at daylight followed by
breakfast. Depart for airport in time to catch your flight
home. (B)
