2012 NCAA Championships
The University of Arizona men’s golf
team seeks its 28th appearance, and
24th in the last 26 seasons, at the 2012
NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.
The 2012 NCAA Championships will
be held May 29-June 3 at Riviera
Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.,
and hosted by USC. Riviera Country
Club is a par 71, 7,279-yard layout. It
marks the first time the legendary
facility, which opened in 1927, has
hosted the NCAA Championships.
The top five teams and one individual from each of six regionals –
Greenboro, N.C., Athens, Ga., Ann Arbor, Mich., Bowling Green,
Ky., Norman, Okla., and Palo Alto, Calif. – will qualify for the
championship event. Arizona, which has posted 10 top-10 NCAA
Championship finishes since 1988, has earned a postseason berth
in 22 of 23 seasons since the regionals were instituted in 1989.

2011-12 University of Arizona Men’s Golf
Q&A With Coach Rick LaRose
What are your thoughts on the roster
as the spring season opens?
“I think out top seven or eight guys pretty
much know who they are right now based
on what results we’ve had. Obviously,
you’ve got Erik (Oja) and Juan Pablo, who is
almost certainly one of the better players in
the country. He and Erik are pretty strong at
the top, and I think Tucker Wadkins may be
one of the best young players in the country.
Trent Redfern, nobody’s got a bigger heart
and nobody works harder and nobody’s a
better player to have on your team. He’s a
great team guy and he’s kind of a good
leader, and that’s a pretty good nucleus.”
With such a youthful roster, how much
importance is placed on patience?
“Patience is everything, especially for the
freshmen. It’s a different way of life (in
college); it’s playing harder golf courses,
more pressure, everything you do really
matters, and that takes an adjustment period.
You have to be patient with them, and they
have to be patient with themselves. That’s
the hardest thing. In golf, the variables are
so different. Weather, the bounce of the ball
– you never know.”
“I’m pleased with our guys. I think we may
have the makings of one of the best young
teams in the country, if not the best, young
team in the country. With the recruits we
have coming in, this team’s going to be
together for a while, and it’s going to get
tougher and tougher for guys to make that
lineup. I’m pretty pleased with the way it’s
going.”
Isn’t it true that college golf is a
tougher game than people realize?
The schedule streches over the entire
year.
“Golf is tough. You’re out there by
yourself, and you have to take care of your
own business. Your teammates can’t come
and pick you up. It’s harder to pick up your
teammates in golf. You have to learn to take
care of your own business and the team will
work out. It’s tough when you have
individual sports like that to get that camaraderie, to get the chemistry, and that’s part of
what we’re doing. Once that clicks, it makes
things a lot easier for everybody.”
Please talk of Juan Pablo Hernandez’s
development:
“I can tell you exactly when he turned the
corner. Back at regionals last year, we
needed a birdie coming in, and on the
hardest hole in the golf course, he hits it to
within two feet with a long iron, and that
puts us in the NCAA Championships.”
From that point on, he gained confidence.
He’d done it, he got over the hump. This fall,
he played exceptionally well for us. He went
to Australia to play for the Australian Master
for the Amateurs, playing with the Mexican
squad, and you can tell that he had some
confidence in what he was doing. He’s
played with the best in the world, and he
knows that he can hang with them. He’s a
fiery guy and I love it. He’s got some heart in
him, and he’s shown it. I think it all goes back
to that shot he hit on No. 18 at Tucson
National last year. I think that may be the
spot, and I hope he gets better and better,
and I think he can win.”
Please talk about sophomore Erik Oja:
“Erik is getting better. He’s a great team
player, he’s a great person, and he’s got a
lot of heart. I think the potential is incredible.
Physically, he’s got some talent. His putting is
getting better, and I think that’s one of the
things he needed to work on. He’s right
there.”
“We’ve got four or five guys who talentwise are very similar, and hopefully they’ll all
develop into superstars. Right now, we
need them all to play well, because we’re
kind of a blue-collar group. We have to get
everybody to get it together at the same
time.”
Please talk about junior Trent Redfern:
“He’s raised the level of his game, He
works hard at his game. He certainly doesn’t
appear to be a superstar, but he’s a worker,
and he works hard every day. He’s gotten a
lot better, and you couldn’t ask for a better
leader to have on your team. He’s got a
great attitude, he’s a great student, just a
gem. He’s been like the glue that’s held
everything together, and I can’t say enough
good things about him.”
Junior Juan Pablo Hernandez
2011-12 University of Arizona Men’s Golf
What’s the importance of internal
competition within the roster?
“It makes everybody better because
everybody wants to play. You have to take
that as a challenge and prove that you are
good enough to make it.”
“Golf is an international game, and the
talent-pool as quadrupled in the last ten
years, and that counts international,
domestic. It’s a whole different animal that
we’re dealing with, and a lot of different
people are good. It’s unbelievable how good
they are. Now, the best players are still as
good as they were, but there are so many
more really good players now. College golf
Sophomore Erik Oja
is tough, there are thousands of better
players, and you see it every week.”
Do the aspirations for this team change
without a senior on the roster?
“Our aspirations are the same. We want
to win every event we play in, win our
conference championship, and we want to
qualify for NCAA Championships, go there
and win. Those are our goals every year.
We set high goals, because that’s what we
want. Over the last 34 years, I don’t think
there’s been a team at the University of
Arizona that hasn’t been ranked nationally
on a consistent basis. We’ve always
maintained high standards. Nothing has
changed. You’ve got to work harder at it
today than you’ve ever hard.”
How much personal satisfaction do you
take when a team comes together:
”It means the guys are getting better and
they’re learning. We are always striving to
get better. The idea is that they listen and
learn and get better as players, and get
more competitive as people, and that’s
where I get the satisfaction. I’m happy for
them because I know success means a lot
to them. That’s what we’re after. We’re in
search of excellence.”
“You have to understand what it takes to
win, and once you do succeed, you have to
be proud of doing what it takes to win, not
just that you participated, but that you
succeeded.”
“The lessons they learn today will be
valuable later in life. They are studentathletes who are here to learn and grow as
people. We want them to have a great
experience and get degrees. We want them
to learn something about life that they can
take to their communities, to their families,
and make them great people. The lessons
they learn on the course have a lot to do
with that, but we can’t just make it about
wins and losses.”

Coaching Staff
Rick LaRose
University of Arizona Director of Golf
Head Men’s Coach
34th Year at Arizona
Entering his 34th season at the helm of the Arizona
golf program, Rick LaRose, director of golf and head
men’s coach at Arizona, has established Wildcat golf as
one of the nation’s finest collegiate golf programs.
Year-in and year-out, the hall of fame coach has his
charges in the national rankings, near the top of the leader
board and in the hunt for the national championship.
LaRose has guided Arizona to 24 NCAA postseason
appearances in the last 25 seasons, and 23 berths in the
NCAA Championships in that span.
Beginning in 1987, LaRose led UA to a streak of 21
consecutive appearances at the NCAA Championships,
the fifth-longest streak in NCAA history. Additionally, the
Wildcats have qualified for the NCAA Regional 22 times in
23 seasons since the format was introduced in 1989, and
Arizona’s six regional championships rank third nationally.
The 2011 spring season was one of serious improvement for the Wildcats, as the squad collected six top-five
finishes in 10 starts, including a win Feb. 8 at the Anteater
Invitational, and saw its scoring average drop considerably. Arizona’s countable stroke average for the spring
was 8.64 strokes lower than the fall figure. Individually,
that improvement boils down to 2.16 strokes per man. As
head coach Rick LaRose said following the NCAA Regional, “I couldn’t be more proud of this team. We played
our hearts out.” How far did the club come in 2011?
Arizona was 78-38 in the spring in head-to-head competition prior to the NCAA Championships after finishing the
fall with a 10-33 mark. Further, Arizona carded its low
tournament total of the season, an eight-under 844, when
it mattered most —at the NCAA Regional — to tie for
fourth place.
As a testament to his outstanding golf legacy, LaRose
12
was inducted into the Golf Coaches
Association of America’s Hall of Fame
on Jan. 22, 2003. He surpassed 6,000
career coaching victories in February
2011.
Now in his 39th season as a
Wildcat head coach, LaRose began
coaching at the UA in 1973 as the
head coach of the water polo team
and swimming coach. He has
coached four different teams at the
University of Arizona during his
tenure, and all four of these programs have been ranked in
the top-five nationally, while producing All-American
athletes on all fronts. LaRose is only coach in collegiate
history to win both a men’s (1992) and women’s (1996)
NCAA golf title, and has consistently produced winning
programs and individual golfers who have been among the
country’s elite.
Prior to taking over the golf program in 1978, he
guided the UA water polo team to four NCAA regional
championships and three fifth-place finishes at the NCAA
Championships. His teams were never ranked out of the
top six nationally and had five All-American performers
and one United States Olympian. His record as water polo
coach was 154-37-2 (.803). As the Wildcat swimming
coach, he helped guide six U.S. Olympian swimmers, 20
All-Americans and one national champion.
His golf teams have been nationally ranked in the top
20 in 26 of those 33 seasons, including a string of eight
consecutive years that the Cats were ranked in the top
three. Further, the team has been the nation’s No. 1 team
13 different times, most recently during the 1997-98
campaign, when it was ranked No. 1 for the majority of the
season.
With the double-duty as the head coach for both the
Arizona men’s and women’s programs (1996-98 and part
of 2010), he led the women to the 1996 NCAA title and
each squad was ranked No. 1 during those seasons. He
also had a hand in coaching two-time NCAA Women’s
Golfer of the Year and 1996 national champion, Marisa
Baena.
LaRose’s teams have won two NCAA titles, seven
NCAA regional championships, four Pac-10 crowns and
three Rolex Match Play titles. In addition to being the only
coach in college golf to coach both a men’s and women’s
NCAA championship team, he is also the only one to
produce both a men’s and women’s Rolex Match Play and
Pac-10 championship teams. His finishes at the NCAAs
not only include the 1992 men’s and 1996 women’s titles,
but six third-place, two fifth-place and two sixth-place
efforts.
Since 1978, LaRose’s golf teams have won 61 men’s
tournaments and 19 women’s tourneys. He has also
produced seven national players of the year, 11 Pac-10
Players of the Year, 68 All-Americans and 112 all-Pac-10
Conference performers. On the national front, he has had
a hand in coaching two United States Amateur winners
(and three runner-ups), five United States Walker Cup
2011-12 University of Arizona Men’s Golf
Coaching Staff
players, a pair of Ryder Cup golfers, a U.S. President’s
Cup performer and three United States Publinx champions. Eighteen of his pupils have also represented the U.S.
in international collegiate competition.
His guidance has left a mark on the University of
Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, as 16 individuals from his
water polo, swimming and golf teams have been inducted,
as well as his 1992 and 1996 national championship golf
squads.
His players have also left their mark on the professional tours, with such players as Jim Furyk, Robert
Gamez, Mike Springer, Larry Silveira, Manny Zerman,
David Berganio, Ted Purdy, Rory Sabbatini and most
recently Ricky Barnes carrying on the UA golf tradition in
the pro ranks.
His athletes have also excelled in the classroom, as
there have been 12 All-American scholars, a Rhodes
Scholar, a Walter Beyers NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship winner, seven Top Student-Athlete of the Year selections at the UA, and a graduation rate of over 80%. He
has also produced two-time Honda Award winner, as
Baena won the 1996 and 1997 awards, which signified the
Athlete of the Year in women’s golf.
In addition to his student-athletes, LaRose has earned
his share of national recognition. The 1992 Golfweek
Men’s NCAA Coach of the Year, he received the same
honor for the women in 1996 following its NCAA title. He
has also been the NCAA District VIII Men’s Golf Coach of
the Year twice and the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the
Year five times (four men/one women). He won the 1977
Coach of the Year award for water polo and was a fourtime NCAA District VII Water Polo Coach of the Year.
LaRose, a native of Delmar, N.Y., graduated from
Bethlehem Central High School, where he won letters in
swimming, baseball and golf. He went on the attend
Brockport State University in Brockport, N.Y., and earned
a bachelor’s of science degree in 1968. He was a threetime NCAA All-American swimmer there, swimming the
backstroke, freestyle and individual medley. An all-around
athlete, he won three SUNY Conference swimming titles
as well as the 1967 New York Collegiate Golf championship and was a member of the 1966 SUNY Conference
cross country title team. He was inducted into the
Brockport State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
After his time at Brockport State, he completed
graduate work at UC-Irvine and the University of Arizona,
where he graduated with a master’s in education. He was
selected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and is a member of Phi Delta Kappa. While at the
UA, he has taught physical education and supervised
student teachers in the College of Education. Prior to his
days in Tucson, he taught elementary, junior high and
high school in Tustin, Calif., where he got his start in
coaching swimming, water polo, baseball and basketball.
His Tustin High School and Fountain High School
water polo teams were always among the best in Southern California, producing 10 All-Americans and five CIF
champions. He was also the head coach of the Southern
California Aquatic Club with his teams placing in the top2011-12 University of Arizona Men’s Golf
10 at both the AAU Short Course and Long Course
Championships.
He later played professional fastpitch softball for the
Tucson Rattlers of the American Professional League,
which won the World Championship in 1976. He has
played in three ISC World Championships and was
selected an ASA and ISC All-State player.
An acclaimed golfer as well, he has qualified for and
played in the United State Amateur Championship and the
United States Mid-Amateur Championship. A member of
the Arizona Golf Association’s Gold4water Cup team, he
won the 1996, ‘97 and ‘98 Dogwood Invitational Senior
Amateur titles as well as the 1998 Porter Cup Senior
Amateur championship.
A member of the Arizona Golf Association’s Board of
Directors, he also serves on numerous advisory boards
and golf associations throughout the country. For all his
work with the UA and in the Tucson community, the
Tucson Conquistadores have honored him three times
with their Sports Achievement Award.
He formed the University of Arizona Eagle Club, which
is a booster organization for Wildcat golf, upon taking over
the UA golf program in 1978. Through this group, the
Wildcat Golf Tournament is held each year as a fundraiser
for Arizona golf. With the help of its corporate sponsors Pepsi and Golden Eagle Distributing - the tournament has
become one of the finest of its kind and since its inception, it has raised over $1.7 million for the UA golf program.

Andy Barnes
Assistant Men’s Coach
Fourth Year at Arizona
Former Wildcat All-American Andy Barnes returned
to the program on Aug. 25, 2008, as an assistant
coach.
Since joining the program, Barnes has helped the
Wildcats amass two tournament victories, 16 top-five
finishes and earn three NCAA Regional appearances —
including a runner-up finish in 2011 — and two NCAA
Championship berths.
Individually, five UA players have claimed individual
medalist honors, five have earned all-Pac-10 honors and
one was an All-American. Additionally, the countable
stroke average for UA’s junior varsity squad has fallen by
more than a stroke since Barnes joined the program.
Barnes, an Arizona letterman from 1995-99, played
and caddied on the highest levels of professional golf. He
spent six years on the Canadian Tour, including fully
exempt status in 2001 and 2002. Barnes played in
multiple PGA Tour events, including the 1999 United
14
States Open and the 2003 Tucson
Open, and also played on numerous
mini-tours around the country. He has
qualified for more than a dozen
Nationwide Tour events in his career.
Barnes also has extensive
experience as a caddie. Most
memorably, Barnes was on the bag as
his brother and fellow UA alumnus
Ricky won the 2002 United States
Amateur Championship. He has
continued to caddie for Ricky off-andon since then, and most recently has caddied for current
PGA Tour professional Charley Hoffman.
As a player, Barnes posted a 74.28 stroke average
during his four-year collegiate career. He still ranks fifth on
the UA career rounds played list with 169. His best
season was 1997-98, where he posted a 72.37 stroke
average en route to first team all-Pac-10 and honorable
mention All-America honors. Barnes also was an
honorable mention all-Pac-10 pick in 1999 and
participated in the 1998 U.S.-Japan Collegiate Golf
Championship.
Barnes, 34, received his degree in sociology from
Arizona in 1999. He is married to former UA softball player
Erika Hanson.

Countable Single-Season Scoring Average
The scoring average listed takes into account the total number of countable
rounds played. It differs slightly from traditional team scoring averages due
to the fact that the Pac-10 Championships currently uses a format that counts
five scores per round instead of the usual four. The average listed is the
average score per player per round. Please note that events, rounds and
strokes are listed for reference only.

every coach, every player,
everyone strives for,” LaRose
said. “It’s a pinnacle, a real
team effort.”
Senior Harry Rudolph, the
1991 California amateur
champion, led the Wildcats with
a second-place finish at 10under-par 278, while junior
Manny Zerman was a stroke
back in third place. David
Berganio, the ‘91 U.S. Publinks
Champion, took 13th at 286,
while junior Rob McIver shot a
293 and senior Jim Furyk closed
his collegiate career with a 294.
The Wildcats
showed their mettle
in the brutal stretch
of the closing holes,
which included the
16th, a 460-yard par4; 17th, a demanding
243-yard par-3; and
the 602-yard par-5
finishing hole.
Berganio was
particularly
impressive in the face
of these three tests.
He holed a 60-foot,
three-level birdie putt
on the 16th, rammed
a 20-footer to save
par at the 17th and
curled in a five-footer
to seemingly wrap
things up on the final
hole.
“Those last three
putts were all from
the heart,” Berganio said. “I
knew I had to help the team. I
knew I had to make birdies down
the stretch.”
LaRose and his squad hit
some clutch shots down the
stretch, but they made no secret
of their love for the New Mexico
course. “I would like to play here
every day,” LaRose said. “It is a
course where great shots are
rewarded.”
The Wildcats had enough
great shots to go around in
putting together a complete
team effort. “This was the closest
team I have ever been on,” said
Zerman. “We wanted to win.”

Tucson/University of Arizona
Tucson, Ariz.
The University of Arizona
Situated in the heart of Southern Arizona, Tucson is a city of
stunning contrast and diversity. From the broad desert valley of
world-famous saguaro cacti to 9,000-foot mountain forests of pine
trees and snow, the city stands at a crossroads geographically and
culturally.
In the metropolitan Tucson area, a population of just over one
million is spread along a main valley floor of some 20 miles between
Rincon mountain ranges to the east and the Tucson mountains to the
west and into the foothills nestled against the backdrop of the Santa
Catalina range to the north. On any of the 350 days of sunshine per
year, the Santa Rita Mountains can be seen some 65 miles to the
south between Arizona and Mexico.
It’s just a 40-minute drive to the top of Mt. Lemmon, the southernmost ski resort in the United States, affording winter activities on the
same day as a round of golf or any myriad of recreational opportunities in the area. Outdoor activities are the norm with hundreds of
miles of hiking and biking trails, highlighted by Sabino Canyon which
showcases the beauty of the desert with river-guided trails leading
into the mountains.
The Sonoran Desert provides a unique setting. Far from the
Saharan sand dunes that most first-time visitors expect, the desert
boasts a wide range of wildlife and vegetation. An afternoon drive
through the Saguaro National Park with its world-famous display of
saguaro cacti highlights the unique beauty of the area. The unique
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, with its rich collection of desert
wildlife and vegetation, is another popular visitors’ destination.
Tucson is a two-hour drive from Tombstone, a two-hour drive from
Phoenix, four hours from Mexico’s Gulf of California coast, 70 miles
from border city Nogales and within hours’ drives from several major
international bird-watching areas. World-class astronomy facilities
on four nearby mountain ranges also attract visitors and specialists
alike.
In addition to its natural attractions, Tucson features a wide range
of cultural experiences. From the first Native American inhabitants to
the earliest Spanish settlers to its current inhabitants, each group left
an indelible mark on Tucson. Native American, Mexican and American
Southwest influences are prevalent throughout the city. The Mission
of San Xavier del Bac, located just nine miles from campus on the
Tohono O’odham Nation, is one of the original missions built by the
Spanish missionaries, and the artist colonies of Tubac and Bisbee
are within a few hours drive as well.
Continuously settled for more than 12,000 years – the oldest such
settlement in the United States— Tucson has grown from a small
Native American village into one of the Sunbelt growth cities of the
21st century. It is one of the premier astronomy and optics centers in
the world, an important health sciences hub and home to a renowned research institution in the University of Arizona.
Tucson has held fast to its small-town ambience, despite
explosive growth. Historic sites compete with new resort-minded
centers for nighttime entertainment and shopping, and the University
constantly holds the center of the city’s attention with its athletics
and cultural activities.
Phoenix is a two-hour drive to the north and is home to NBA, NFL,
NHL, Major League Baseball and WNBA franchises. Further north lie
international attractions like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, the Painted
Desert, Monument Valley and Lakes Powell and Mead. Las Vegas is
only a seven-hour road trip away, as are other Pacific beach cities;
San Diego is less than six hours away.
The nights are always cooler in the desert after a splendid sunset
or a mid-afternoon dousing from a summer monsoon. That’s when
Tucson’s small-town attitude and big-city potential reveal themselves
in the nighttime entertainment. From cultural events at the UA’s
Centennial Hall or the historic Fox Theatre, to the hot spots for a
youthful population, there are activities to engage most any interest.
The melding of the city’s diverse influences makes Tucson an ideal
choice as a home, a vacation spot and a business magnet. With a
population that includes college students, families of all backgrounds
and thriving groups of young professionals and retirees, Tucson is a
city with something for everyone.
Founded on 40 acres of land donated by a saloon-keeper and two
gamblers, and funded by a $25,000 consolation prize in Tucson’s
competition for the Territorial capital, the University of Arizona rose
from the desert floor of the true old West. Nobody wanted it, and
fewer believed it would last. Fortunately, they were wrong, and the
bet laid down by E.B. Gifford, Ben C. Parker and W.S. “Billy” Read on
Nov. 27, 1886, has paid off into one of the finest research institutions in the world.
When the first 32 students arrived at the only building on campus
in 1891, they began a tradition that has now entered its third century.
The hitching posts for horses required to reach the edge of town
may be gone, but “Old Main” remains as witness to the University’s
growth into a 400-acre Research I institution with nearly 200
buildings, more than 39,000 students, and a faculty and staff of
12,000.
Arizona’s first university is the largest employer in Pima County
and among the top 10 in Arizona with a payroll of half a billion
dollars. The UA offers more than 325 degree fields in a dozen
different colleges and another similar group of specialized schools.
The University of Arizona is one of the top 20 research universities in the nation and has played a part in groundbreaking projects
ranging from the exploration of Mars to the development of new
cancer treatments and pioneering breakthroughs in heart transplantation. UA’s observational, theoretical and space astronomy
programs have been ranked No. 1 in the country by the National
Science Foundation (NSF) and recent other rankings placed 17 of
the University’s graduate programs among the top 20 in the nation. In
addition, the Nobel Prize, three Pulitzer Prizes and the National Medal
of Science have been bestowed upon Arizona educators.
Not to be forgotten, the University’s undergraduate programs
continue to flourish. The NSF considers Arizona to be one of the 10
universities that best integrates teaching and research for undergraduates. The NASA-funded space grant program pays undergraduates to work in laboratories alongside faculty, and the
Undergraduate Biology Research Program includes 43 departments,
involves 240 faculty sponsors and funds 140 undergraduate
researchers annually. The Eller College of Management and the
McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship are rated in the global top 10 by
Finance Times. The University was named in an Elite 50 list of
institutions for academically-minded athletes in 2009.
UA’s top-notch programs develop top-name graduates who have
continued on to success in their respective fields. The UA boasts a
laundry list of graduates who have significantly impacted society.
From the late U.S. Congressman Morris K. Udall to Joan Ganz
Cooney, founder of the Children’s Television Workshop, to Emmy
Award winning actor/comedian Garry Shandling, UA graduates have
made their mark on the world.
The UA also plays host to the world, with students representing all
50 states and 130 countries. Nearly a quarter of the student body
consists of under-represented racial and ethnic groups, and the
campus is located in one of the most diverse locations in the country,
with the influence of Native American and Mexican cultures evident
throughout the Tucson community.
The University of Arizona is in its third century of service with a
continued commitment to providing support to its undergraduate
population. Recently completed and current construction projects are
testaments to the fact that the UA is dedicated to continued
progress. The Integrated Learning Center, located underneath the
grass Mall in the middle of campus, provides a home base for
freshmen, with classrooms and offices for easier access to faculty
and staff. The Student Union embraces the ambience of the
Southwest with shaded terraces and open-air walkways, and
provides numerous services such as the bookstore, technology
center and varied restaurants that serve the UA community. The
SALT (Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques) Center enhances
aid to students with learning disabilities.
This commitment to excellence ensures that the University of
Arizona will continue to grow from its auspicious beginnings as a
single-building outpost in the desert into a world-renowned center
for knowledge and research well into the next century.

The Pac-12 rises above the rest, upholding its tradition as the
“Conference of Champions” ®, claiming an incredible 180 NCAA team
titles over the past two decades, including nine in 2010-11, averaging nearly nine championships per academic year. Even more
impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success, with
championships coming in 27 different men’s and women’s sports.
The Pac-12 has led the nation in NCAA Championships in 45 of the
last 51 years and finished second five times.
Spanning nearly a century of outstanding athletics achievements,
the Pac-12 was the first conference to reach 400 championships in
2010-11. With the inclusion of CU and UU, league teams have
captured 442 NCAA titles (302 men’s, 140 women’s), outdistancing
the next closest conference by nearly 200.
With the additions of Colorado and Utah, Pac-12 members have
won 302 NCAA team titles on the men’s side, 89 more than the next
closest conference. Men’s NCAA crowns have come at a phenomenal rate for the Pac-12 - 16 basketball titles by six schools (more
than any other conference), 52 tennis titles, 44 outdoor track & field
crowns, and 26 baseball titles. Pac-12 members have won 25 of 42
NCAA volleyball titles , 37 of 42 in water polo, and 22 in swimming
and diving. Individually, the Conference has produced an impressive
number of NCAA men’s individual champions, as well, boasting 2,019
individual crowns.
On the women’s side, the story is much the same. Since the NCAA
began conducting women’s championships 30 years ago, Pac-12
members have claimed at least four national titles in a single season
on 22 occasions, including 2010-11. Overall, the Pac-12 has
captured 140 NCAA women’s titles, easily outdistancing the SEC,
which is second, with 77. Pac-12 members have dominated a
number of sports, winning 23 softball titles, 19 tennis crowns, 13 of
the last 21 volleyball titles, 14 of the last 22 trophies in golf, and 12 in
swimming & diving. Pac-12 women student-athletes shine nationally
on an individual basis as well, capturing an unmatched 616 NCAA
individual crowns, an average of nearly 21 championships per year.
The roots of the Pac-12 Conference date back over 95 years to
December 2, 1915, when the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) was
founded at a meeting at the Oregon Hotel in Portland, Ore. The
original membership consisted of four schools - the University of
California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of
Oregon, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). All
remain members of the Conference.
Pacific Coast Conference play began in 1916 and, one year later,
Washington State College (now Washington State University) was
accepted into the league, with Stanford University following in 1918.
In 1922, the PCC expanded to eight teams with the admission of
the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of
Idaho. In 1924, the University of Montana joined the league roster,
and in 1928, the PCC grew to 10 members with the addition of UCLA.
The Pacific Coast Conference competed as a 10-member league
until 1950. During that time, the league’s first commissioner was
named. Edwin N. Atherton was Commissioner in 1940 and was
succeeded by Victor O. Schmidt in 1944.
In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and the Athletic Association of
Western Universities was formed and Thomas J. Hamilton was
appointed Commissioner of the new league. The original AAWU
membership included California, Stanford, Southern California, UCLA
and Washington. Washington State joined the membership in 1962,
while Oregon and Oregon State joined in 1964. Under Hamilton’s
watch, the name Pacific-8 Conference was adopted in 1968. In
1971, Wiles Hallock took over as Commissioner of the Pac-8.
A decade later, on July 1, 1978, the University of Arizona and
Arizona State University were admitted and the Pacific-10 Conference became a reality. In 1986-87, the league took on a new look,
expanding to include 10 women’s sports. Thomas C. Hansen was
named the Commissioner of the Pac-10 in 1983, a role he would hold
for 26 years until 2009. He was succeeded by current Commissioner
Larry Scott, who joined the league in July 2009.
Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men’s sports and 11
women’s sports. Additionally, the Conference is a member of the
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in four other men’s sports
and three women’s sports.
Director of Athletics Greg Byrne
Greg Byrne was named Arizona’s 11th Director of Athletics in
March 2010 and officially assumed the reins on May 3, 2010.
In his short time with Arizona, Byrne has led the charge on new
fundraising initiatives and member expansion for the Wildcat Club. Under
his leadership, the Wildcats have seen construction completed on a
new men’s basketball lockerroom, implementation of a new video board
for the south end zone of Arizona Stadium and the beginning stages of
a north end zone football facility.
Prior to Arizona, Byrne was Mississippi State University’s Director of
Athletics, where he was the youngest top athletic
administrator in the Southeastern Conference and the
youngest to lead an athletic program at the NCAA Division
I-A level. He started out his career at MSU in June 2006
as Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs.
He has been around successful athletic programs, and
the director’s chair, literally all his life. He is the son of
long-time athletic administrator Bill Byrne, currently the
Director of Athletics at Texas A&M University.
Byrne, however, has made a name for himself in intercollegiate
athletics. He had 15 years of professional experience prior to assuming
the AD’s position, a resume that shows progressive growth in both
responsibility and achievement. He has been directly involved in raising
over $160 million in gifts during his career in athletics.
A native of Pocatello, Idaho, Byrne earned his bachelor’s degree in
1994 and his master’s degree from Mississippi State in 2009. Byrne is
married to the former Regina Misa of Junction City, Ore., and the couple
has two sons, Nick and Davis.
