WORDS FROM PROFESSOR
June, 2006
Staying in Shape
Part of training in any martial art, is staying in shape! In order for the student
to be able to master the techniques of KAJUKENBO, one must be in shape. If
the joints and ligaments are not strong enough to handle the twisting and
movements that are required to perform the techniques, the student will
suffer injuries. Part of being a warrior is having your body in proper condition
to defend yourself as well as your love ones at any time. This means training in
a cardio and strengthening program on a regular basis. The strengthening
1
exercise’s taught in class are enough, if the student does them daily. It would
benefit the student to start jogging or some type of cardio program to build up
his or her wind so they would be able to fight for long periods at a time if
needed.
Professor Yuson finishing the
Honolulu Marathon
Professor Yuson was an avid runner and ran the Honolulu Marathon almost
every year. In 1986 he came to Ohio and completed the Glass City Marathon
with Professor Blevins and Sensei Behm. He believed in testing his body and
mind on a regular basis. So learning the techniques are not enough, one must
be in proper condition to be able to perform them at top speed. A student can
not depend on the class time to keep them in shape. Most martial art studio’s
only train two to three times a week, so there is no way a student could stay in
shape working out two to three time a week. The training time with your
Sensei is where a student learns. The students off time is where they work on
their techniques and stay in shape. So if you are suffering from frequent
injuries, ask yourself if you are in shape?

FLORIDA
PROFESSOR BLEVINS
The Professor has been home for a month now and has the Florida boys back
into their training full swing. He will be working on doing some promotions
upon his return from Kentucky and Ohio. After two and a half years only three
of the Professors students have stayed strong and waited for his return.
Scott Condon, Randy Lee and David Snook. This shows a great deal of
commitment on their part and all three should be congratulated. The
Professor is getting ready to make his journey to Kentucky and Ohio, where he
will spend time with both clubs.

LUA O KAIHEWALU
Olohe is doing fine and in good health and continues to teach his art of Lua all
over the United States. Professor Blevins continues to train in Olohe’s art and
plans to pass this art to hisYHK students. Professor Blevins corresponds with
Olohe regular and is making plans to either bring Olohe to Florida or travel to
California to train. Olohe does several seminars a month, and is still going
strong. Olohe has written his first book on Lua and will be out soon (Kaihewalu
Lua).
Kaakoo-Loa
Hawaiian word – Kaakoo-loa (staff), the Hawaiians had only one word for the
staff, and it didn’t matter what length it was, it was known as Kaakoo. The
Kaakoo was used for blocking and striking much like the Japanese staff, but
with a few differences. Even while using weapons, the Lua warrior would
always try to break or dislocate the joints or bones of his enemy.
