2014 MBB Annual Report
Mercy Beyond Borders
2014 Annual Report
June 2015
Dear Friend,
Each year this report allows me to step back and survey the
significant improvements that YOU are making possible in
the lives of women & girls in Haiti & in South Sudan.
2014 was the best of years; it was also the worst of years….
Ethnic violence continued to wrack SOUTH SUDAN,
displacing two million people (1/4 of the population). The
“new normal” now includes political insecurity, hunger,
danger on the roads, & skyrocketing inflation. We’ve had
to relocate some of our programs and we’ve mourned the
deaths of our Scholars’ relatives murdered by bandits.
Despite those external forces, we gifted St Bakhita
School with a new Toyota, convened 83 young women for
leadership training, documented the success of 91 of our
women entrepreneurs, and graduated our first cohort of 15
MBB Scholars from universities (all are now fully employed
in S. Sudan).
In HAITI we dealt with chikungunya, a malaria-like illness
also known as break-bone disease because of the joint pain
it inflicts, that hit all of our staff and many of our Scholars;
we had to drop 20 Scholars who failed to make an adequate
transition from small mountain classrooms to rigorous high
school academics; and we wrestled with landlords, building
renovations and voodoo curses. Still, we were able to host
our first immersion trips of high schoolers from the States,
we opened a 2nd boarding lodge for our Scholars, and we
implemented a Scholars’ volunteer program in the local
communities.
What made it the BEST of years?
YOUR ongoing support.
YOUR encouragement.
YOUR engagement in our mission of “forging
ways for women and girls in extreme poverty
to learn, connect & lead.”
We are so grateful!
Sister Marilyn Lacey, Executive Director

THANK
YOU
You can feel very proud
of what you accomplished
in 2014 in partnership with
Mercy Beyond Borders:
You’ve saved girls from early marriages.
You’ve enabled women to become literate.
You’ve supported women’s micro-businesses.
You’ve sent young women to universities.
You’ve sheltered vulnerable girls.
You’ve encouraged a generation of leaders.
TOGETHER WE’RE LEARNING. TOGETHER WE’RE CONNECTING. TOGETHER WE’RE LEADING.
WHAT YOU DID
IN SOUTH SUDAN
• Kept 671 girls in St Bakhita Girls Primary School
& replaced their 18-year old vehicle with a new van
• Gave 130 women HS & University Scholarships
• Taught literacy to women in 5 rural villages
• Provided leadership training for 83 Scholars
• Graduated 15 young women from universities
• Gave training & loans to 91 businesses run by women
WHAT YOU DID
IN HAITI
• Awarded 103 high school scholarships to girls
• Opened a 2nd Boarding House: safely lodged & fed 44 scholars
• Conducted a leadership week for 30 top scholars
• Hosted immersion trips from US high schools
• Sowed the seeds of “pay it forward” volunteerism
• Taught computer skills to all Scholars
Rosi Claire, pictured here (below on right) with
her mother and Sr. Marilyn at their mountain home
in northern HAITI, is a double amputee. Facing a
future with legs made of wood, she imagined herself
only as a basket-weaver by the side of the road.
Thanks to YOU, she participated in our computer
classes and discovered a world that did not require
strenuous physical work. Totally enthused, she
is now heading for a career in Information Tech,
supported by an MBB Scholarship.
Raila Philip was orphaned by the civil war in S. SUDAN as a very
young child and airlifted for safety to St Bakhita Girls Primary
School, a thousand miles away. YOU supported
her all the way through nursing school.
She graduated several months ago and
immediately returned to her home
region, the Nuba Mountains, where she
is now employed as a nurse in the only
hospital in the region. Raila is one of our
first MBB Alumnae, working in an area
still being bombed, but oh, so happy to
be helping her people.
Take these stories.
Multiply by 1,677.
That’s how many lives you’ve
impacted directly this past year.
When you include all the members of their
immediate families, you get a feel for how
your generosity ripples outward, giving
HOPE to thousands.
WHO YOU ARE
Women. Men. Children. Donors in Australia,
Canada, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand,
The Netherlands and the United States.
Dreamers with global hearts. People of
hope and vision. Change-makers.
YOU’RE AMAZING!
WE THANK YOU, ONE and ALL.
LEARNING
“There is no investment more effective
for achieving development goals than
educating girls.”

The power of an educated girl! The impact
of a literate woman! MBB believes world
peace hinges on gender equity in education.
Your donations fund that vision at every
level, pre-school through university.
From Haiti, Rose-Mirtha speaks to our
donors: “Because I am an MBB Scholar
wonderful things are now happening in my
life, things I could never have imagined,
such as being in high school or participating
in a leadership camp. I am an orphan raised
by an aunt who had no money for my
schooling. The day I got this scholarship
was the happiest of my life: I danced.
I sang. I expressed my joy in every way….”

CONNECTING
“It’s wonderful to see our Scholars from
14 different tribes making friends with one
another across those old barriers. These
women will build peace in South Sudan!”
–Sr Edvine Tumwesigye,
MBB Scholarship Coordinator
We convene our Scholars for Leadership
Weeks every year. Besides the excitement
generated by going “off-site” to a training
center to learn new skills, these times
together allow the young women from over
a dozen tribes to form lasting friendships
across traditional barriers. Susan Ikanga
(yellow shirt) vows to be the “next Malala”
by promoting girls’ education in S. Sudan.
