VASSS Wooden Racquet Tournament Results
Scott Patton felt
Main Draw
confident leading up to the
2014 VASSS Wooden Racquet Tournament. Patton
had won the event two
times prior, with Shirley Tran
in 2010 and the following
year with Dale Sprowl. He
also had an incredible partner in Kori Schillereff who
has been playing the best
tennis of her life. Patton’s
confidence was justified,
as he and Schillereff beat
Eric Crook and April Reddin
31-22 in the final to give PatChamps: Scott Patton, Kori Schillereff Finalists: April Reddin, Eric Crook
ton his third Wood Racquet
victory in 5 years, and SchilBack Draw
lereff her first ever.
The Wood Racquet
Tournament is always a favorite amongst members. It
features a one draw format
that is handicapped, meaning any level team can win
it! And of course, we require
all members to play with
wood racquets, beckoning
back to the days of McEnroe
and Borg, when tennis was

more about finesse and
creating angles. This year,
we held the event on February 15th and had 10 more
competitors than last year!
As for describing
the action on the courts,
intense would be an understatement. Patton showed
that he may be better with

a wood racquet as he carved
the ball all over, hitting drop
shots one minute, then
pounding back hand returns
the next. Steve Joyce and
Valerie Grady also played
remarkable, with Grady
showing her athleticism in
some dominating net play.
The event saw Eddie
Prom and Rob Prendergast
win the back draw, beating
out Eric Tobiessen and Randy
Daniel 31-28 in a gut wrenching match. This was the first
time Eddie has played with
a wood racquet in over 30
years, so it was quite the
achievement. He was thrilled
with the win, as he was seen
dancing the night away to
karaoke in our Pub Party
afterwards.
While the action was
intense on the courts, it was
equally intense in our best
dressed contest! The female
award went to Marie Brown,
sporting a classic blue coat,
authentic white Wimbledon
style dress and white shoes
to match. For the men, Scott
Patton pulled out his pink
pants for victory. Not many
men could pull that off.
It was nice to see
such enthusiasm. Thank you
to the 18 teams for coming
out and playing! -Adam

VIEWPOINT BY CRAIG
As an American athlete, is there a tougher way to becoming
financially secure than being a professional tennis player? After experiencing the pro tour and looking at the hard facts, no other sport comes
close to the difficulties that tennis players must endure with finances.
Bobby Reynolds is the last American man ranked
in the top 200 with a 179 world ranking. His total prize
money so far this year is $10,318.00! Based on this dollar
amount, he is projected to make roughly $65,000 this year.
Over the past 10 years, the average earnings for
a man ranked around 200 is just over $100,000. The minimum salary
for an MLB player is close to a half a million bucks. Plus there are over
900 baseball players in the league. The wide income and opportunity
disparity is true for the NFL, NHL, NBA and golf. The 200th best tennis
player in the world makes about as much as a successful businessman,
and only has 10 years to do it. In tennis, only the select few make the
disproportionate.
I saw how hard it was during my playing days on the ATP Tour. I
reached a career high of 319 in the world in singles in 1993. At that time,
I was the 26th highest ranked American player in the world. My earnings
for that year were roughly $30,000.00 and I had 50k in expenses.
But this should not stop our talented youth who dream of making it big in tennis. Money does not buy you happiness. If you want to
be happy “Follow your dreams, work hard, practice and persevere.” I do
not regret trying to make it on the tour for one second.
In 2013, Bobby Reynolds was asked how he felt about the
experience of playing at Wimbledon (after loosing to Djokovic), “It was
amazing and I loved it. You know, I’ve watched so many matches at
Wimbledon growing up. You don’t ever really think it’s possible to make
it. To keep going this long, to be able to tell my kids that I got to play on
Centre Court against the guy who is No.1 in the world. You can’t put a
price tag on it.”
Tips from the Tennis Director, Ross Townsend
* If you are a player short when setting up a doubles match, you
should confirm with the Court Director ‘who is going to fill the
match’. If it’s agreed that the CD’s will fill the match, assume the
match will be filled. You will be notified ahead of time if the CDs
were unable to fill the match.
* If someone asks the CDs to fill a match for them, it would not
be too polite for that person to moan about his new found playing partner. This hardly ever happens here, of course, but it has
happened. We all know that if we don’t want to accept the CDfound fill-in - we find our own fill-in.

Love-Fest at NBTC: Feb 13th, 2014
Helen McKinnon and Cathy
Christina recently held a
"love-fest" round robin to
celebrate the love with their
NBTC tennis friends.
“We wanted to express the ‘love’
by making it mandatory to wear red or
pink” said Christina. “We had over 50 balloons and we decorated the tennis courts
with love themed items including lips and
hearts. We really wanted to express our
love with good friends.”
Prizes were awarded for the best
dressed, most aces, person who rearranged their schedule the most, and
more! Thanks Cathy and Helen!
SUPER BOWL PARTY!
We had a fantastic time celebrating the
Super Bowl together with all our NBTC
friends. Also, Happy Birthday to Mary
Ann Strout, who celebrated her birthday
in style during the game!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TONY CHRISTOPHER
We spotlight film producer Tony
Christopher who recently completed a
project entitled “The Arctic Expedition”
Long time NBTC
member Tony Christopher
has spent 26 years in the
television and film industry
running production and
distribution companies. He
was one of the producers of
the first End Hunger Telethon
and eventually moved into
media. He has done work
for NASA, Nissan, Pepsi, Cox,
Warner Bros, and others.
Tony is about to
complete a “passion project”
entitled, “THE ARCTIC EXPEDITION” in which he tells
the story of climate change
through the incredible backdrop of the Arctic. I had a
chance to sit down with him
as he relayed his epic journey
to me.
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
My film documents the Arctic
related to Global Warming and Climate Change.
The reason the Arctic is of
great interest to the science
community is because of its
relevance to the rest of the
world. It is widely believed
what occurs in the Arctic
eventually occurs in the
Southern Hemisphere.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU
WORKED ON THE PROJECT?
Over 6 years! Even before
filming, I spent a year to negotiate the rights to the project and prepare for the epic
journey to the Arctic. Finally,
on December 3rd, 2008, I left
Newport Beach. Five plane
rides and a helicopter lift
later, I landed on the Amundsen in the Canadian Arctic
with 40 below weather. It
was definitely a huge climate
shock coming from Newport
Beach.”
LOOKING BACK, WOULD
YOU CHANGE ANYTHING?
No, I would not have
changed the experience for
anything. The Coast Guard
and the scientists worked as
a cohesive team for a common goal. The Amundsen
was an amazing vessel and
the Arctic is a spiritual place
unlike any other I have ever
seen. Given the chance, I
would go back tomorrow.
The only drawback to that
part of the world was it was
impossible to play tennis!
WHAT IS THE AMUNDSEN?
The Amundsen is a 330 foot
Canadian Coast Guard ice
cutter and is the world’s
most state-of-the-art floating
laboratory. 26 countries and
more than 250 scientists participated in this historic $70M
project. Each of my three
visits lasted approximately a

KARAOKE - FEB 15TH NEXT PUB PARTY: Mar 16/23
GARETH’S TAKE
This month we talk about a topic dear to my heart:
COURT MANNERS.
We’ve all done it. You flub the sitter into the bottom of the
net or shank the soft mid-court ball into the back fence with
the open court beckoning. If you’re from the southern lands,
you may say, “Aye Dios Mio!” The northerners may say, “Dang
nab it!” If you’re from Australia, you might let out a little bit of a choice,
“F&$%^# H$*!@!”.
Well, thanks to the contributions of our members, now you can get your
frustrations out without coming afoul of fellow players, spectators, and
umpires alike. With these proven techniques, you will maintain your stellar
on court image.
Top 5 Politically Correct actions after flubbing a shot:
5. “C’mon [insert YOUR name]!”
*Careful to use YOUR name and not an opponent.
4. Silence is Golden
*If you have to, launch the offensive ball into orbit.
3. “Fudge!”
*Other variants include Fudgical, Mother Fudge, or Farfignugin.
2. “Mother of Pearl!”
*Made famous by the Judgie.
1. “Fjolla!” / “Inte ens din mamma gillar dig!” / “Skitstövel!” / “Sug en
grodkuk!”
*Very creative! Always a plus to use a foreign tongue.
Just remember that nobody likes a potty mouth, especially here at
NBTC. Just remember that what you do in life echoes in eternity, so think
wisely after your next flub or shank.
IMPROVEMENTS
NBTC has made a number of improvements in the last few months
and also has quite a few enhancements on the way.
Already, we have replaced a few
of the aging Elipiticals and both
treadmills in the gym. Also, you
may have noticed we repaired the
TV in the far corner of the gym.
Lastly, we fixed the reverse osmosis water dispenser in the court
directors office.
On the horizon, look for our annual
“Spring Cleaning,” which will include repainting the walkways and
pool deck, enhancing the landscape, and resurfacing of a few of
the most needed courts.
Spring is always an exciting time
around the club and we are glad
to have you as members to enjoy it
with us!
YOUR HEALTH
Last spring, I started my first ever vegetable garden plot. I remember having a fascination with seeds and
plants when I was a child. But, I come from the O.C. and
have been programmed all my life to think that we buy
fruits and vegetables from the market.
And so my first tomato of the season sat on my kitchen
table. This wasn’t just any tomato. It represented all the work,
discipline, and knowledge obtained to produce it. Day-afterday I checked the tomatoes for disease,
hand-watered them, and laid out a special
homemade nutritional brew. I picked off
a number of hornworms that would have
destroyed the entire crop if left unabated for
more than 2 days, and I watched the entire
process from seedling to full size plants
unfold.
I’ve never tried to grow anything in my life. My idea of
“farming” was the trip to Ralph’s or Trader Joe’s. To me, produce
was the shiny apples and too perfect lettuce you get at the market.
Where did it come from? Why should I care? Some other poor soul
had to do the “work” and plus, I’m paying $.99 for a perfect tomato.
I had lost the connection to my food.
I have always heard that tomatoes straight off the vine
were infinitely better than store-bought. So, as I bit into my first
tomato, I realized all the work was worth it. This was the best
tomato of my life. And throughout the season, every crop was the
best thing I’ve had in my life, from the kale, swiss chard, carrots,
tomatoes, peppers, watermelons, corn and the
peas. Peas were probably my favorite crop all
year. I got huge production with very minimal
pest problems, and the incredible flavor was addicting. I was hooked! I wasn’t using advanced
techniques, and it didn’t take a lot of work.
Seeds, water, and a little TLC made my garden explode with staggering yields. What amazed me
the most was how much food I was able to grow
in such a small space.
And here I was, late in the season, spraying home-made
soap onto my kale plants to kill pests, de-weeding my strawberry
patch, and making sure to control the powderly mildew on my
tomatoes and really enjoying it! The tomatoes in nature didn’t
resemble those perfect tomatoes in the market, nor did they
taste anything like them. Some of the most tasty tomatoes I had
last season were some of the most imperfect. Now, I am forever
changed on my idea of food, my respect for Mother Earth and all
the local farm people who work so hard in getting the food onto
our store shelves.
As we enter the growing season, I encourage all of you to
start your own small garden. Even a small 4-by-4 foot plot will yield
a sizeable amount of vegetables all season long.
TENNIS TIPS
Scott Davis started his illustruous tennis career
from an early age, winning 24 U.S. National Junior Titles.
In college, Scotty continued to dominate, winning two
NCAA team titles, in addition to capturing All American
Honors three times. As a pro, Scotty reached a career
high of #11 in singles and #2 in the world in doubles.
Davis won 3 singles titles, 22 doubles titles, and won the
1991 Australian Open Doubles Title with partner David
Pate. We are extremely lucky to have Scotty both as a
tennis pro here and a contributor to our newsletter.
“Get Closer to Net” by Scott Davis
If you find that you are not putting the ball away
when you think you should, maybe it’s because you’re
too far away from the net. There are two ways to hit
winners when at the net. 1.) Move your feet when the
opportunity presents itself to close in on the higher,
floating ball 2.) Simply stand closer at the beginning of
the point and be ready to attack anything within reach.
Someone once (or was it 100 times) asked me, “ When
are you too close to the net?“ and my answer is always
the same, “ If your opponents are not lobbing over you,
then you’re not too close to the net.” On the other hand,
if more than two lobs have landed over your head then
try backing up a bit....
I hope this helps you win some more points and
have some fun on the courts.

The Unique Rules of Tennis
Some pretty strange things can happen
on a tennis court. Here are a few unique
situations and the proper application of
the rules of tennis.

What happens if your opponent

If it is a deliberate action, made to

activities of tennis, it is a hindrance.
You must call the hindrance immediately.
