Bullying is a big issue
Bullying happens every
day in schools across the
country and in our own
community. The results can
be devastating. Not only can
bullying lead to depression
and poor performance, but it
can even be fatal. Don’t let
your kids be a statistic.
Look for warning signs.
Kids won’t always come
out and let you know what
they are dealing with on a
daily basis. Look for telltale signs like a change in
sleep patterns or appetite, a
change in mood or behavior.
Is your child becoming more
irritable or isolated? Does he
or she seem more hopeless
or worthless? Things can
escalate to the point where a
child does start talking about
killing themselves, saying
things like “You won’t miss
me” or “Everyone will be

(The sod and mulch were
for all of Constitution Park,
not just the rainforest.) The
sod and the mulch were contracted. If we were to have
contracted the installation of
the plant materials instead
of completing it in-house,
it would have cost another
$10,000. It was also our
staff that spread all of the
sand for the waterfall with
a Bobcat. That took staff
about two weeks altogether
to complete,” said Petty.
Phase 2 will either involve

better off.” Their grades
may plummet. Teachers
may notice changes in the
classroom. Your child may
start giving away their possessions and things that were
important to them in the past
may suddenly not be.
Of course, all of these factors could be from various
things happening in your
child’s life, including drug
usage. Always keep a keen
eye on what your child does
and where he or she goes,
and who your child associates with. Make sure you
have access to all of their
online accounts and social
media. These days bullying
comes in the form of not only
verbal and physical attacks,
but also cyber ones, including sexting.
If you think your child is
suicidal, call the National
Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK
(1-800-273-8255) or visit
online at www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org for more
information.
In addition, Broward
County Schools has created
a 24-hour hotline called Silence Hurts 754-321-0911).
Call this to report any bullying taking place to prevent
anything from happening to
escalate the situation. If you
hear or see of something, say
something. The life you save
could be your child’s.
Students, that goes for you
as well. Don’t stand for this
type of behavior. If it has
happened to you, it could
happen to your friends too.
Just because you dealt with
the situation doesn’t mean
the bully won’t do twice
as much to his or her next
victim. Also, report any
bullying to your parents and
teachers immediately. Ignore
the bully and do not engage
him or her, but report it.
