Tennessee River Museum displays history
Taking a tour through the Tennessee
River Museum takes a visitor back in time
to the early days on the Tennessee River.
Hundreds and hundreds of years before
Savannah was a city, Native Americans
lived on the same river bluff where the
museum is now located.
Mound building Indians built impressive mounds protected by a parapet or
wall. From artifacts unearthed in Hardin
County, it became clear that at some point
the Indians left this part of the country. Why
they left or where they went are questions
unanswered.
“The museum has something for everybody. There are artifacts from ancient
times, Native Americans, pioneers, Civil
War and riverboats,” said Tennessee River
Museum Board Chairman Kent Collier.
The Mound Builders exhibit allows
visitors the opportunity to touch a variety
of items used by the ancient people during a typical day. Pottery, tools, weapons,
jewelry, games and more is available at
individual stations, along with educational
videos.
Located throughout the exhibit are large
canvas renderings by artist Becky Carter
show many aspects of Indian communities.
The site of the Tennessee River Museum is in the old post office in downtown Savannah. It
houses rare and interesting objects associated with the river and the area.
The center of the room houses a re- said Collier.
Another exhibit is about ferries, decreated dig, with archaelogist’s tools,
scribing the importance of the ferry for
artifacts and dog skeleton.
“Pet dogs were found along with people transporting citizens across the Tennessee
in the mounds,” said Collier. “We have River. Ferries in Hardin County were used

last ferry in Saltillo was closed.

were actually a variety of colors over the At that time, the land was basically uninspan of time as seen in the strata levels,” habited, with records describing how few
Indians lived here at that time.
Other displays include “Trail of Tears,”
with two lifesized models of a Native
American man and woman depicting their
journey from Tennessee to Oklahoma.
“Two Trail of Tears routes crossed here at
Savannah,” said Collier, as he pointed to a
display map. “A land trail and a water route
both brought people to the banks here.”
The exhibit has displays of handwritten
receipts where a United States soldier had
purchased food for the Indians and also
passage on the ferry for each of them.
Other displays contain items from the
Civil War. Among its prize exhibits is one
of the most complete collections of Shiloh
artillery projectiles.
A short video features artillery demonstrations by re-enactors of a cannon being
loaded and fired.
In one display case is a rare Jenifer
saddle, popular with both Northern and
Southern officers. Fewer than 20 such
pieces are said to exist. This display includes rifles from the Civil War period and
through the support of the community is
now owned by the museum.

Main Street program gets crowds downtown
Main Street Savannah, under the direction of C. Seth Sumner, strives to keep
downtown a thriving, vital part of the
community. Sumner works on combining
several events together so there is something for everybody to enjoy downtown.
“We really want to work with as many
special events and organizations in town
as we can to try and make their events
even bigger,” he said.
In the past year, the Main Street program has hosted several events deemed
successful.
In October, Main Street had a downtown arts fair called Happy Fall Y’all,
which featured a chilli cooking contest,
live local music, and children’s contests
such as pumpkin painting. This year’s
festival will be Oct. 12.
Treat Street, held on Halloween, Oct.
31, turns Main Street into a trick-ortreater’s dream. Downtown businesses
extend their hours and hand out candy
to Savannah’s pint-sized superheroes,
witches, princesses, and ghosts.
On Nov. 9, a Veterans Day parade rolls
through downtown, a tradition Sumner
hopes to continue.
As the Christmas season approached,
Main Street got into the spirit of the season
with the Merry Little Shopping Spree.
Patrons to downtown stores were able to
enter to win a $500 gift certificate to the
shops courtesy of the Main Street program.
The winner was announced at the
Main-Street-sponsored Christmas by the
River. Sumner hopes to make this year’s
event even bigger. Plans for a skating rink
and snow machine are in the works for
the Dec. 7 event.
“I’d really like to see Court Square
covered in snow,” said Sumner. “It’s got
a fun, family-friendly environment and is
something cool to do with the family you
probably wouldn’t normally do,” he said.
Sumner said one upcoming event
should draw large crowds- the 35th annual Bluegrass Festival. Usually held at
Wayne Jerrolds River Park, it is moving
to downtown Savannah for the first time.
“We’re really excited about joining up
with Wayne Jerrolds,” said Sumner.
The downtown portion of the festival
is set to begin Saturday morning, July 6,
on Court Square and continue all day
long. Free Savannah sausage dogs will
be available that morning to bluegrass
fans and the Savannah Arts Commission
will have handmade, local goods for sale.
For more information on the Savannah
Main Street program or upcoming events,
contact Sumner at 925-3300.

Kids of all ages like to play in Hardin County
Children in Hardin County have the
chance to play a variety of sports in programs sponsored by both the city of Savannah and county organizations. Kids
can start playing when they are barely
out of diapers at age three and continue
as long as they are able to take the field.
They can also find a sport for every season
of the year.
Savannah’s Department of Parks and
Recreation, which is directed by Larry
Arendall, serves an estimated 1,200-1,300
children each year in seven different sports
for both boys and girls.
Arendall believes that the sports programs are a boon for area children. “We
want to keep them involved in some type
of sport, no matter what kind. Sports
gives them an outlet and gets them off the
couch. We want to keep them occupied so
they are less likely to make bad choices ,”
he commented.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is jointly funded by the city and
county and benefits all kids who live in the
area. Arendall says that studies show an
estimated 70% of children involved in the
leagues live in the county. “Both of our local governments back the Recreation Department’s efforts to promote sports, and
support us in our mission to provide sports
opportunities for all youth in the area,” he

Spring and summer months find children on the baseball or softball field. Children can begin playing t-ball in Savannah
at age four. The department has softball
teams that extend up to age 12 for girls.
Savannah Youth Baseball, Inc. offers
Dixie Youth baseball for children ages
5-10, with Dixie O-Zone being made available to 11 and 12 year old athletes.
The department also sponsors football
teams in the fall of each year. All grades
1-6 participate in full contact football.
Each team also has a cheerleading squad
to cheer them on.
Another popular sport for kids is soccer, which is a co-ed league held in the fall
for children ages 4-12.
There are basketball leagues for athletes in grades 1-5. The basketball leagues
play in the winter months.
The Parks and Recreation Department
offers Babe Ruth baseball for boys ages 1315. Hardin County has three sets of ball
fields, the Hank DeBerry Four-Field Complex, the Savannah Dixie Youth Fields,
and the City Park. All are maintained by
the city.
When youth leave the city programs,
Hardin County High School also boasts a
full sports program. The Tigers have football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, soft-
ball, golf, bowling, cross country, track,
tennis, trap shooting, cheerleading, and
dance teams. These teams have been honored for their achievements both on and
off the field over the years. They have advanced to the highest level of competition
in state tournaments and have been honored for their sportsmanship.
There are also sports programs at the
three area middle schools. Hardin County
Middle School, Pickwick Southside, and
Savannah Christian Academy all offer a
variety of opportunities.
Even after athletes graduate high
school, they do not outgrow the programs
offered by the city of Savannah. There are
softball leagues for both men and women.
According to Arendall, Savannah is the
only city in the area that offers organized
leagues for adults. There are nine men’s
and four ladies’ softball teams playing on
Monday nights.
Crump also sponsors sports for kids.
Crump has t-ball, softball, and baseball
teams for ages 3-12. Around 250 children
play on their teams.
Contact Information: Savannah Department of Parks and Recreation may be
contacted at 731-925-5595 and you can
also check them out on Facebook. Applications for programs are available at Savannah City Hall.

Museum showcases life of famed sheriff
This summer people will travel hundreds of miles to visit a home and museum
in the small town of Adamsville in the
southwestern corner of Tennessee.
They are making a pilgrimage to the
home of Buford Pusser, a man seen as a
folk hero in the classic mold.
“We have visitors from all over the
country,” said Buford Pusser Home and
Museum Curator Julia Stevens. “A lot of
them are current law enforcement officers
who were inspired into the line of work
by watching the Walking Tall movies.”
Pusser won fame as a young sheriff–elected at the age of 26–who reputedly would not be bought or beaten by
criminals.
With fists, guns, raw courage and determination, he smashed a vicious vice
and gambling ring that was terrorizing
and corrupting McNairy County. His
crusade, accomplished at the terrible cost
of disfiguring wounds, the murder of his
wife, and possibly his life, was dramatized
in the book “Walking Tall,” followed by
the movie bearing the same name.
Two other films were made about
Pusser’s life. He had been cast to play
himself

himself in a fourth movie when he
met his death on U.S. 64 in August 1974.
Pusser was born in Adamsville of hardworking, church-going, strict parents.
After graduating from high school
Pusser joined the Marines but was discharged a month later because of asthma.
Returning to look for land, Pusser and a
friend went to one of the illegal gambling
houses clustered around the Tennessee
and Mississippi state line.
Out $300 at the dice table, Pusser
noticed the dice were loaded.
When he asked for his money back, he
was brutally beaten, knifed and thrown
in a ditch to die. He managed to crawl
back to a highway where a trucker picked
him up. It took 200 stitches to put him
back together.
This incident opened the “Walking
Tall” movie. In the film version, Pusser,
armed with a hickory stick, returned to
the joint, beat his tormentors and got his
$300 back. He was charged with assault
and armed robbery, but was tried and
acquitted.
“I had to do something about it,” he
www.courieranywhere.com said later. “The county sheriff wouldn’t
do anything. I didn’t realize then that he
was on the syndicate’s payroll.”
Pusser’s pride and inner hurt were too
great for him to just walk away from the
situation so he decided to run for sheriff
and succeeded.
When the syndicate found they
couldn’t beat him, they tried to buy him.
He was offered $250 a week to “play
along.” Pusser replied by confiscating two
new cars filled with illegal whiskey, then
was offered $500 and later, $1,000 a week.
“I just smiled and walked away,” he
said.
He lived with violence and death for
the next six years while he was sheriff.
During his terms, he was shot eight times
and stabbed seven. On two different occasions he was forced to kill in self defense.
It seemed Pusser was invincible until
the night of Aug. 21, 1974.
He had received good news that
day. At a Memphis press conference it
was announced that Pusser would play
himself in the upcoming movie, “Buford
Walking On.”
He’d also been to the McNairy County
Fair where he played carnival games and
rode rides with his daughter Dwana.
Dwana and Buford said their goodbyes
at the fair and went home in separate cars.
Page 47
The totaled out frame of Pusser’s corvette rests in the garage of the home.
She was riding with some friends.
On the way home in his new 1974
Corvette he passed Dwana’s vehicle. As
he approached a curve, the ‘Vette left the
road and struck an embankment. Pusser
was thrown from the car, which burst
into flames.
Dwana was first on the scene. No one
knows for certain what caused the wreck,
but some believe his car was sabotaged.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol ruled the
wreck an accident.
Now his legend lives on through the
museum that was his Adamsville home
for so long.
Inside the museum, visitor’s will find
family photos, intact bedrooms and
bathrooms and even grade school report
cards. The totaled out frame of Pusser’s
Corvette rests in the garage of the home.
“One of the coolest features of the
museum are the patches that officers bring
with them to leave at the museum. We
have hundreds of them,” said Stevens.
Tours of the museum are available

Hardin County has something for
every outdoor enthusiast to enjoy.
From boating, fishing, hunting, or just
wildlife watching, it’s all here. Hardin
County is a unique blend of middle
and west Tennessee geography which
makes for gravel bottomed creeks and
rolling hardwood covered hills in the
east and muddy bottom streams and
fertile agriculture ground in the west.
This allows sportsmen and women the
opportunities to wade fish a clear stream
or to duck hunt a cypress/tupelo swamp
all within a short drive of each other.
The
most
apparent
outdoor
opportunities in Hardin County are the
Tennessee River, which is referred to as
Kentucky Lake in the Tennessee Wildlife
Resources Agency’s (TWRA) fishing
guide, and Pickwick Lake. Both offer
year round fishing for a wide variety
of species of Tennessee fish. Catfish,
Sauger, Largemouth and Smallmouth
bass, Striped bass (Rockfish), White bass
(Stripe) and Crappie are the most fished
for species in both the river and lake.

move on to the when, where and what
they are biting on.
Catfish can be caught year around
but the peak months are March through
June, September and October. Most are
caught by “bumping bottom” which is
nothing more than drift fishing from a
boat and maintaining contact with the
river bottom with your bait. Channel
catfish and blues are both caught using
this method. The river is the main
producer of catfish especially around
the Savannah Bridge, the Pickwick Dam
tailwater and the Cerro Gordo, Shiloh,
and Coffee Landing areas. Most are
caught using cut bait or night crawlers.
Pickwick Lake also holds some catfish
that are willing to bite a hook. June
and July are good months to try night
fishing the lake. Try along the drop
offs and channel for blue and channel
catfish or cast out for flatheads along
the rip rap using live bait or crank
baits. Trot lines, limb lines and jugs are
also popular methods to take catfish.
If you do choose to use trotlines, limb
lines or jugs, all must be labeled with
either your name and address or your
www.courieranywhere.com TWRA Identification number. This is
a 9 digit number found on your fishing
license. Sport anglers are limited to 100
hooks per person on a trotline and no
more than 25 jugs. Trotlines, limb lines
and jugs must be checked at least once
every 24 hours. Also catfishermen are
only allowed to take one catfish over 34
inches per day per fisherman. There is
no limit on catfish under 34 inches from
the Kentucky Lake (River) or Pickwick
Lake.
Sauger are probably tied with catfish
in terms of popularity with fishermen.
Every year, we as TWRA Wildlife
Officers check hundreds of anglers from
the end of November to the first of
March, who are willing to brave freezing
temperatures and nasty weather for a
chance to take home some of Tennessee’s
best tasting fish. Sauger are caught using
the same “bumping bottom” technique
as for catfish with some adjustments.
Instead of a circle or bait hook, a large
buck tail jig armed with a stinger hook
and baited with either a minnow or a
fluke is used. Popular colors for the jigs
are pink, chartreuse, and purple. Sauger
tend to congregate in the deeper holes
along the river especially around River
Heights, Cerro Gordo, Eagle’s Nest
Island, Shiloh and below Pickwick Dam.

must be at least 15 inches before being

Bass are another popular species
found in the county. Three species of
Black bass are commonly caught in
both the lake and the river. Depending
on the time of the year most spotted,
smallmouth, and largemouth bass are
caught on plastics and crank baits. There
is no length limit on spotted bass and they
can be differentiated from largemouth
bass by the jaw not extending past the
eye and the presence of a tooth patch
on the tongue. In largemouth bass, the
jaw extends past the eye and they lack a
tooth patch on the tongue. Largemouth
and smallmouth must be at least 15
inches on both the river and Pickwick
Lake before being kept. Smallmouth are
generally caught right below Pickwick
Dam, off the humps and around boat
docks on Pickwick. Smallmouth are
identified by the lack of a horizontal
band down the midline. Also they are
bronze to brown in color with vertical
pigmentation on the scales. The daily
limit per angler per day is 5 black bass
total in any combination of the 3 species.

Striped bass are commonly caught from
