Ryder Cup player.
FORE WORD
As a native of the north-east of
Scotland I admit to being biased but
I truly believe we have some of the
world’s finest and most memorable
golf courses in this area – courses
which, played once, just have to be
played again and again.
Two especially close to my heart are
the charming riverside course at
Banchory on Royal Deeside where I
learned my trade as a professional and
the magnificent links at Carnoustie,
venue of my Open Championship
success in 1999.
The superb new Trump International
Links is attracting visitors from all
around the world but we also have
a marvellous variety of links and
parkland layouts all within very easy
reach of Aberdeen – the Granite City.
I am thrilled to now have my own
golf centre on the outskirts of the city
where you can learn the game, hone
your skills and play the picturesque
nine hole layout. If I’m not on tour I
might bump into you there!
The region is so full of history - great
old (and new!) golf courses, ancient
castles, malt whisky distilleries and
some of the most breath-taking
scenery – it is also a very modern area
with Aberdeen recognised as the Oil
Capital of Europe.
With Royal Aberdeen, the world’s
sixth oldest club, playing host to the
Scottish Open for the first time in
July, there has never been a better
time to visit.
It’s a wonderful place to stay and
play - come and see it and enjoy it
for yourself. I promise you won’t be
disappointed.

A Tale of
One City
Top: Aberdeen’s cobbled Shiprow
in the heart of the city centre.
Above: Aberdeen’s stunning Marischal College.
The granite building has acted as the headquarters
of Aberdeen City Council since 2011.
Below: The sunken Union Terrace Gardens, located
just off the city’s main thoroughfare, Union Street.
Aberdeen, well known as the Granite
City and the Oil Capital of Europe,
houses a diverse range of attractions
and activities, from museums and
galleries and areas steeped in history
to the bustling shops and beach
esplanade. It is the perfect blend of
old and new.
The fascinating history of Aberdeen
can be seen throughout the city, with
the Maritime Museum on Shiprow
showcasing the city’s long relationship
with the sea and the historic roots of
the North Sea oil and gas industry,
and the Gordon Highlanders
Museum allowing visitors to uncover
the stories behind one of the British
Army’s most celebrated regiments.
The deep history continues down
to the busy harbour and along to
Footdee, or ‘Fittie’, an ancient fishing
village dating back to 1398.
The city is also rich in culture and art,
with Aberdeen Art Gallery boasting
one of the finest collections of artwork
in the country, including exceptional
work by Monet, Ramsey and Damien
Hirst.
With Aberdeen also hosting an
array of productions and exhibitions
at world-class venues including
His Majesty’s Theatre, visitors can
experience the strong heritage and
diversity of the city.
5
To the north of the city lies the
charming Old Aberdeen, a former
burgh and the approximate point
of first settlement of Aberdeen. The
area is also home to the University
of Aberdeen, founded in 1495
and the fifth oldest university in
the English-speaking world. Robert
Gordon University is the newest
addition to the city’s education
institutes, and recently underwent a
modern development on the banks of
the River Dee.
In line with Aberdeen’s contemporary
endeavours, there is a lively social
scene in the heart of the city with
two bustling shopping centres, Bon
6
Accord and St Nicholas as well as
Union Square, and a wealth of shops
the length of Aberdeen’s Granite
Mile, Union Street, and vibrant
restaurants and bars throughout.
For those more interested in sport,
Aberdeen is home to Aberdeen
Football Club, recent champions of
the Scottish League Cup, with their
home ground Pittodrie Stadium
located near to the attractions of the
beach.
With such diverse offerings, Aberdeen
city caters for all desires and gives
visitors a flavour of tradition, heritage
and culture with a modern twist.

CASTLES AND COASTLINE
(AND NOT A HOBBIT IN SIGHT!).
Top: The popular ruins of Dunnottar Castle, located
just south of the coastal town of Stonehaven.
Below: The Cairngorm hills are popular with snow
sport enthusiasts throughout the winter months.
Spanning nearly 2,500 square
miles,
Aberdeenshire
blends
unspoilt coastlines, stunning glens
and countryside with a number of
charming towns and villages that help
make the area one of Scotland’s most
popular and welcoming regions.
Encapsulating part of the Cairngorms,
miles of farmland and five stunning
rivers in the Dee, Don, Deveron,
Ugie and Ythan, Aberdeenshire is
the perfect mix of town and country
that is packed full of things to do and
places to see for those visiting the area.
At the heart of the region is its people,
who will welcome all-comers in their
distinctive Doric dialect and will
always be on hand with suggestions
and help if required.
Visitors to Aberdeenshire will be
spoilt by the range of distilleries, golf
courses, mountains, hills and beaches
there are to visit - with something to
do all year round.
Throughout the winter months,
the snow slopes of the Lecht and
Glenshee provide perfect conditions
for those looking to partake in a
spot of snowboarding and skiing.
For the more adventurous type, 24
Munros provide plenty of hillwalking
opportunities along with the chance
to spot some of Scotland’s rarely seen
wildlife in its natural habitat.
11
The coastal towns around Banff and Macduff provide
stunning views across the North Sea with the village of
Pennan a particular favourite with visitors. Pennan was used
as a location for the 1983 film Local Hero. Inland, rolling
farmland dominates the countryside with the quiet town of
Turriff home to the Turriff Show, Scotland’s largest two day
farming event.
Royal Deeside and the towns of Braemar, Ballater and
Banchory sit in the south west of the region and is a popular
haunt of the Royal Family throughout the summer months.
Home to the stunning Balmoral Castle, Crathie Kirk,
Crathes Castle and the Royal Deeside Railway, the area is
packed with fascinating stories of history and heritage.
12
To the south of the region is Stonehaven, a popular coastal
town with a bustling harbour. Further north along the
coast lie Fraserburgh and Peterhead, home to some of the
best beaches for surfing as well as the largest fishing port in
Europe, with fresh seafood at a number of restaurants in
plentiful supply.
With the Glen Garioch distillery in rural Oldmeldrum
and with monthly farmers’ markets in the thriving town
of Inverurie, Aberdeenshire’s strength very much lies in
the uniqueness of its many towns that can be found in all
corners of the region.

Designs

designed by Alister MacKenzie, creator of Augusta.

The mere mention of The Augusta
National provokes images of glorious
blue skies, picture perfect green grass
and vivid flowers in bloom. It is the
American golfing dream.
The inspiration behind that US
landmark is the celebrated golf course
architect Alister MacKenzie, and the
good news is aficionados of the sport
do not need to travel far to experience
at firsthand his expertise.
MacKenzie made his mark on a
number of courses in Scotland –
with Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire
benefiting from his legacy. The grand
old Hazlehead course in Aberdeen’s
west end is the undoubted jewel in the
Granite City’s golfing crown.
The classic MacKenzie blueprint,
with its tree lined fairways and
tantalising layout, may not have the
same worldwide profile as Augusta,
but for generations of Aberdonians
it remains a special place. Crucially,
it also remains open to all, as part of
the Sport Aberdeen network of public
courses.
Naturally for a region skirting the
North Sea, links golf is the alternative
for the more cosseted challenges of
Hazlehead and the plethora of inland
clubs.
17
MacKenzie gave Duff House Royal his
special treatment, putting the coastal
town of Banff at the heart of the
north-east’s golf trail. The Duff House
design was based on the original work
of James Braid, another of the most
skilled and imaginative architects
Scotland has ever produced.
Braid’s work can be found at Royal
Aberdeen, where the championship
Balgownie links has been put to use
for leading amateur and professional
tournaments. Braid built upon the
original design by Archie and Robert
Simpson – with the nearby Murcar
Links Golf Club undergoing a
similar evolution through the input
of Archie Simpson then Braid during
its formative years. Murcar is another
of the championship courses upon
which the region’s finest players have
honed their skills in unforgiving but
hugely rewarding surroundings.
The subtle nuances of good design are
not a distant memory for Aberdeen
18
and Aberdeenshire, with the creation
of the Trump International Golf
Links at Menie utilising the best in
modern techniques and modelling
to fulfil the owner Donald Trump’s
vision for a timeless classic. Many
other new courses have been built to
cope with demand in the area, with
golf booming both in leisure terms
and competitively.
Whether old or new, whether
parkland or links – Aberdeen and
Aberdeenshire has something to
tempt golf connoisseurs from far and
wide.
Top: The 8th hole at Royal Aberdeen... a
fine example of James Braid’s work.
Above: Archie Simpson - contributed to the
design of Murcar Links
Golf is a major activity in our area and there
are courses to suit golfers of all abilities.
Some of Scotland’s finest links courses adorn
the region’s fringes, while nestled in the midst
of breathtaking scenery are some of the
country’s most spectacular parkland courses.
This is a world renowned destination which
we will be delighted to show you.

As well as boasting wonderful golf
courses, Aberdeen’s stunning scenery
is also home to an abundance of
castles and attractions which reflect
the rich history of the north-east. With
more castles per acre in Aberdeenshire
than anywhere else in the UK, the
area holds Scotland’s only Castle Trail
encompassing 17 of the region’s most
remarkable sites, ranging from cliff-top
ruins to royal residencies and grand
fortresses.
Dunnottar Castle, perched upon a
dramatic cliff top on the outskirts
of Stonehaven, is one of the area’s
most prominent attractions, with
William Wallace, Mary Queen of
Scots, and the future King Charles II
all having graced the ruins with their
presence. This spectacular setting has
also been popular with national and
international filmmakers, providing
the backdrop for a variety of notable
productions including the 1990
version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet
starring Mel Gibson and the upcoming
remake of Frankenstein with James
McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. The
castle also inspired the setting for
Pixar’s recent animation Brave.
Another of Scotland’s most renowned
retreats is Balmoral Castle which has
been a Scottish residence of the Royal
Family since 1856 and is nestled in the
striking scenery of Royal Deeside. The
royal roots of this area date back to
Queen Victoria and her family during
the Victorian era, and continue
through to today with Queen
Elizabeth and her family enjoying the
area during the summer months.
Villages along the valley, such as
Ballater, Braemar and Banchory,
attract visitors from around the world
Top: The distinctive Crathes Castle,
near Banchory, Aberdeenshire.
Below: Loch Muick, a stunning two mile long
freshwater loch in Aberdeenshire.
Royal Deeside
with their deep cultural heritage,
enchanting scenery, and plentiful
activities including walking, cycling
and wildlife watching.
Dating back 900 years, Royal Deeside
also boasts annual Highland Games
which are hosted throughout the
local towns and feature Scotland’s
finest pipers, dancers, and athletes
who compete in ancient sports such
as tossing the caber. The most famous
is the Braemar Gathering which is
regularly attended by members of the
Royal Family and Her Majesty the
Queen.
With the north-east of Scotland
offering such a wide range of historical
and cultural experiences, visitors can
have just as much fun exploring the
countryside as they can on the golf
course.

Whisky Chasers
Synonymous with Scotland, whisky and the ancient art of its creation encapsulates the spirit of the
country perhaps more than any other product. Home to many of the world’s most famous distilleries,
Scotland has been producing single malts for generations, with the malt whisky trail continuing to be
one of the most loved visitor attractions that the country has to offer.
22

Bottom Right: A worker sorting out the casks at Glendronach distillery by Huntly, Aberdeenshire.
Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are
home to nearly 20 distilleries, offering
visitors to the area a range of malts that
although are made by almost the same,
historic process, are completely different
in colour, taste and feel. From the
sweet, toffee and vanilla notes of Royal
Lochnagar produced in the shadows
of the neighbouring Balmoral Castle,
to the fruitiness and fragrant finish of
the Glen Garioch malt, made in the
quiet, rural town of Oldmeldrum, the
choice is vast, offering visitors an insight
into the history and processes behind
the area’s rich heritage of whisky
production.
Aberdeenshire is also home to a
burgeoning craft beer and brewing
scene with Ellon-based BrewDog
leading the way with its unique brand
of beer and marketing that has seen
it become one of the country’s, if
not the world’s, most popular new
brands of beer. A pub dedicated to
BrewDog’s products has also recently
been established in Aberdeen for those
looking for something a bit different to
the norm.
The idea of drinking whisky with food
may seem outlandish to some, but the
north-east produces some of the finest
fayre that is simply too hard to resist.
Leading the way is the Aberdeen Angus
breed of cattle, with the meat renowned
for producing succulent steaks that can
be found on the menus of many a
restaurant throughout the area.
With busy harbour ports in Aberdeen,
Fraserburgh and Peterhead, the region
stocks a plentiful supply of fresh
seafood, with coastal towns such as
Stonehaven, Buckie and Banff home
to some of the north-east’s finest fish
dishes and restaurants.
For those looking for something
a bit sweeter, the Deans of Huntly
shortbread, or the famous Mackie’s
ice cream makes for the perfect after
dinner accompaniment.
For the more adventurous eaters who
like to take matters into their own
hands, Aberdeen is home to leading
chef Nick Nairn’s cookery school that
gives people the chance to hone their
skills alongside picking up a number of
hints, tips and recipes as they go.
With various farmer’s markets
being held across Aberdeen and
Aberdeenshire throughout the year,
there is definitely no lack of variety and
choice when it comes to experiencing
the best food and drink that the
north-east has to offer.

Local
Heroes
The north-east of Scotland has produced
many fine golfers through the decades.
From the formation of the Society of
Golfers in Aberdeen in 1780 through
to the modern day there has been a
marvellous love affair with the sport.
It took more than 200 years for the
dream of the founding fathers of
that organisation to be realised
and for an Aberdonian to
claim his place at the sport’s top
table. In 1999 it happened,
the city finally had a Major
champion to call its own.
Paul Lawrie was the man
who made it happen,
the individual with the
determination and guts
to go all the way. His victory
in the Open at Carnoustie
in 1999 marked an
unforgettable moment in his
home city’s sporting history.
European and British golf
endured barren years at the
very highest level following
Lawrie’s win at the Open in
1999. Padraig Harrington was
the man who officially broke
the drought when he won the
Open championship in 2007
but arguably it was Aberdeen’s
very own Richie Ramsay who led
the way.
Harry Bannerman
- the city’s most successful
golfing export before Paul Lawrie.
Photograph courtesy of Aberdeen Journals.
25
Above: Paul Lawrie acknowledges the crowd after another successful round of golf.
Left: Aberdeen’s Richie Ramsay contemplates his next shot.
When Ramsay brushed aside a long line of home favourites
to win the US amateur championship in 2006 it was a shot
across the bows of the Stateside stars. Ramsay is part of the
next generation of continental players. His qualities brought
him the US amateur title at the age of 23.
The magnitude of the Aberdonian’s achievement is best
demonstrated by the length of time which had elapsed
between his momentous victory and that of the nation’s last
winner in the tournament – a whopping 108 years. Since
then he has gone on to be a winner on the European Tour,
following in the footsteps of Lawrie.
Lawrie and Ramsay lead the charge in the modern game, but
they follow a well trodden path from the north-east to the
fairways and greens of the world stage.
The glamour and glitz of the Ryder Cup on American soil
are as far removed from the biting cold and howling winds
of north-east links golf as it is possible to imagine. For Harry
Bannerman, the two worlds came together in glorious
fashion in 1971 as the Aberdonian lad went head to head
with the finest the US had to offer and strode away with his
head held high.
For Bannerman, the Granite City’s most successful golfing
export prior to Paul Lawrie’s heroics in the 1990s, the Ryder
Cup match at Old Warson in Missouri that year proved to be
a defining moment in a long career as a club and tournament
26
professional – with his points haul including a momentous
draw against the legendary Arnold Palmer in the singles.
Bannerman was part of a generation of talented north-east
players, with brothers David and John Chillas among
those to join him in turning professional. Both played with
distinction, with John proving vintage is no barrier to success
with his maiden European Seniors Tour victory in 2003
whilst in his 50s.
The region has also produced a string of amateur stars,
including Walker Cup veteran Sandy Pirie and Elaine
Farquharson-Black – a winner of the prestigious Helen Holm
Trophy as a 19-year-old in 1987.
The following decade saw Aberdeen’s Scott Henderson
win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for
his impressive debut on the European Tour – following
illustrious names such as Tony Jacklin, Sam Torrance, Nick
Faldo and Sandy Lyle through to Jose Maria Olazabal and
Colin Montgomerie before the more recent additions of
Thomas Bjorn, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter.
Henderson’s emergence demonstrated that the conveyor belt
of talent continued to function well, something which rings
true today as the next batch of young hopefuls make their way
in the sport and fly the flag at the highest level for Aberdeen
and Aberdeenshire.

THE GOLFERS GUIDE

Inchmarlo Golf Club
www.inchmarlo-golf.com
Strung out along the valley of Royal Deeside
are many excellent golf courses, and sitting
under the watchful eye of Scolty Hill on the
outskirts of Banchory is Inchmarlo.
Although a youngster in comparison to many
of its Deeside neighbours, Inchmarlo is a
treasure that is not to be overlooked.
Opened in 1997 and designed by Graeme
Webster, the 9-hole Queen's course is
beautifully laid out and provides a real test for
players of all ages and abilities. None of the
holes are more than 350 yards, so Queen's is
not daunting in length but the mixture of
burns, ponds, trees and drystone walls mean
club selection and ball control are vital.

Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club was founded in 1888 on
the Udny links and is set against a dramatic backdrop of
the Ythan Estuary, the North Sea and the ever-changing
dunes of the Forvie National Nature Reserve. It is
situated just two miles up the coast from Trump
International Links, Scotland.
The course has enormous variety with every hole
presenting a different challenge and great fun to play.
The course was ranked as the number 32 fun course
in Great Britain and Ireland by Golf World Magazine
in 2013. A true hidden gem.

The course has matured into one of the more popular parkland
courses in the North East of Scotland having been blessed with
natural features, the principal being the Findon burn which,
lined with mature broadleaf trees, crosses five of the holes on
the first nine influencing either tee or approach shots.
Visitors returning after several years are constantly in awe of
the tree lined oasis that has not only matured dramatically
after the planting of over 20,000 trees many years ago but our
greens and fairways, particularly approaches, are held in the
highest esteem by all that play them.
There are four measured courses ranging from the yellow
course at just over 5700 yards to the black course at 6670
yards - choose to match you and your visitors capabilities.
As well as a large practice ground, there is also a driving
range and short-hole pitching area. Buggy hire is
available at modest rates.
Our glass fronted Clubhouse, having just been subjected to
a refurbishment, sits overlooking a number of holes giving
a truly panoramic view of the scenery and the perfect place
to relax after a round of golf.

Murcar Links has undergone alterations over the years, which has
stretched the layout to 6516 yards. Originally designed by Archie

There can be some wicked bounces off the crumpled fairways and there are burns
and the odd blind shot to contend with. The signature hole is considered to be the
seventh – a 423 yard par four which is ominously called Serpentine. From a high tee,
the drive is over a twisting burn with a ravine on the right and heavy rough on the
left with towering dunes everywhere.

The 18-hole course is spread over several terraces and follows the natural
contours of the river bank offering a fair test to all golfers. Challenging
par 4s test skills to the full, while the par 3s and 5s provide particular
interest - the latter tantalisingly reachable in two with a good drive. The
greens are meticulously kept and well-guarded.
Players can’t fail to be inspired during their round by the panoramic
views of the Dee valley with the imposing Grampian Mountains in the
distance. With careful management Peterculter has matured into a course
which is a joy to play.
