returned; today - otter.
Over the next few years, developers have plans to build thousands of new
homes between us and I-75. We, as a community, need to do everything we can
to make sure that South Venice remains a vibrant, attractive community to
homebuyers. This means supporting the Water Quality Task Force as well as the
Friends of the Beach; joining the monthly Neighborhood Cleanup and the Waterway Trail Cleanup. Volunteer for a Committee and
show up at an SVCA meeting.
Bring problems and concerns,
but try to suggest a solution
or two as well. It is in all of
our best interests for each of
us to chip in and invest some
time, some money and some
sweat in this community.
Change takes time, it takes
patience, and it takes effort but in the long run it is, and
will be, worth it - from all of
us. Just ask the otters.
South Venice Waterways pilot program moves
forward with County’s help

On Friday, September 5, volunteers working with Sarasota County staff, completed a critical step in the pilot program that may ultimately restore natural life and
flora to Siesta Waterway. when they hydro-seeded the sloping bank along Siesta
Drive. The County hopes to expand the process to more waterways throughout
South Venice.
Before the seeding began, the group
planted two 100-foot lengths and a
swale along Siesta Drive with native
plants. The day before, County workers
prepared the site with their "chain mixer" which combined mulch and dirt
and other organic material together.

International Coastal Clean-Up Day at beach and ferry

On Saturday, September 20, 2014, local volunteers joined area Boy Scouts and participated in the International Coastal Cleanup,
sponsored by Keep Sarasota County Beautiful. Throughout the United States, and other countries as well, volunteers cleaned up
their coastal areas.
Most notable in South Venice were the Boy Scouts led by Brett Thomas, Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 26 and Committee for
Venture Crew 26, and a South Venice
resident. Brett was joined by adult leaders Joe Schemenauer, Brian Cronin,
John Carter and Pam Bargdill. Black
Water/Blue Water Tours brought a trailer of kayaks.
The Friends of the Beach made lunch for
the volunteers when they returned from
their cleanup. The Friends of the Beach
rock!!! (More from Cherry on page 4.)
In spite of the rainy weather, eight
scouts, two non-scout youth and five
leaders were joined by six volunteers
from the Friends of the Beach. They
cleaned 2.5 miles of shoreline.
Here is what they found:
In all they collected 493 pounds
of trash to make a total of
1,312 pounds they collected in
their two clean up efforts this
year—in April and September.
Frankly, there are no words to
describe people who litter our
precious water and land. Without these hard working, conscientious volunteers, all that
TRASH would still be floating in the water
and along the endangered mangroves at the
shoreline. In addition, the hazard to the
critters is unconscionable. Thank you to everyone who participated in this important
event.
We don’t inherit the earth from our parents;
we borrow it from our children.

Book Club

Just formed last Spring, the South Venice Book Club now meets monthly
at the Civic Association the Fourth Tuesday of the month from 3:00 pm
to 4:30 pm. We’ve been on hiatus since May, now but we’re ready to get
going for another season! Our first meeting will be Tuesday, November
11 at the SVCA at 3:00pm. We’ll be discussing the book we’re currently
reading—One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan Tropper—and choose
titles for our next few months’ reading. Everyone is welcome to join us;
hope to see you there!

Thank you to the eight Friends for pitching in and
providing lunch to our local Boy Scouts who cleaned
up the Ferry area as part of the International

I would like to thank the FOB members who donated their personal funds and time to serve a well
deserved LUNCH to our the Scouts. Thanks to Bob
and Donna Pietras, Harriet and Doyle Phillips, Betty
Ann and John Rigg, Rebecca Star and Joan Giovinazzo. By the way, the Troops
ate three to four Hot Dogs each—they sure earned them! We served up 72 Hot
Dogs along with Potato Chips and Cold Water to 27 Scouts. Thanks to all.

help with the planting of this new area and installing boulders that were found
nearby. Luanne has deemed our plantings around the Ferry House area all
"Florida Friendly”. Luanne also donated several plants for this area.

CEMENT CURBING AROUND PLANT
BEDS IN FRONT OF FERRY HOUSE
(below left):
The FOB contracted Curb Effects out of Port Charlotte to install decorative cement curbing
entirely around the plant beds in front of the Ferry
House. We also laid down more mulching. The curbing
will help keep the mulch in the flower bed and keep the
bed moist. Please take the time when you are at the
Ferry House and take a look! It’s gorgeous.
STONES PLACED IN THE FRONT OF THE FERRY HOUSE DOORWAY: This area of stones were
donated by Chuck and Merle Yalowitz—thank you guys! The Yalowitz's are new full time
residents who moved here from Tennessee. They say they love living in Paradise. (Chuck was
also the member who built the new BULLETIN
BOARD at the Ferry House.)
"HIT THE BRICKS" BEAUTIFICATION CAMPAIGN (Update): Betty Ann Rigg, Chair of the Campaign reports we have sold nine more Bricks; we
must hold up the order until we have a total of 30
before the Engravers do them. Forms are in a plastic box attached to the chain link fence
in the front of the Ferry House. Another box is on the beach side attached to the Left side
railing. They’re also in the office at the SVCA. Please consider purchasing a brick so we can
keep improving the ferry property. Thanks!

meeting at 12:45pm on Oct 13th to carpool to the Open Studio in
Englewood. The Open Studio is at 380 Old Englewood Rd. FYI - on

pm. We will return to the community center for a short business
meeting and refreshments after the tour.

I had attended a social
gathering. As Karen and I were
walking into the party my fellow
Rotarian introduced me to his guest. Identifying me
as the “hearing guy.” I never heard anyone actually
call me that and I am really ok with that title.
His guest owned up that she needed hearing aids
but when she tried them she could hear herself chew
and it was unpleasant. She even told the other man
about her discomfort. He said she would get used to
it.
Karen heard her and reassured her that no she
doesn’t have to get used to it.
When wearing a new technology level or hearing
aids for the �irst time, your brain can be startled by
sounds it hasn't heard for a long time (birds
chirping) or sounds that are unusual (whir of
computer fan). These type of sounds will not always
startle your brain.
Hearing yourself chew is not a sound that is new
to your brain. This is a program adjustment that is
needed.
I’ve kept in my of�ice a can of nuts for years to
allow anyone with this complaint to actually eat
while programming to ensure their comfort at all
times during their lifestyle. And as we can see, eating
is one of my favorite lifestyle moments.
It really saddened me that a business owner didn’t
look for a solution. Programming is blending your
hearing loss with what you love to spend time doing,
your best lifestyle.
I’ve met people who love playing bridge, �ishing,
boating (which is different), tennis, golf and guns.
Each of these activities has a very different priority
for hearing and then blend in each individual’s loss
to ensure they are experiencing the best they can for
their lifestyle, that is proper programming.
Report of the Nominating Committee
Per the SVCA by-laws, in September Board President John
Bowne appointed Board member Jeanne White to chair this
year’s Nominating Committee; Laraine Jansen and Steve Suau
made up the rest of the Committee.
The September issue of The Wave had invited willing SVCA
members to put their names forward to the committee. Jeanne
is proud to announce that quite a few did and we now can present a full 11-member slate for the 2015 Board of Directors. If
there are no further nominations, this slate—again according
to our by-laws—will be declared ‘elected’. They are:

The by-laws lay out rules for submitting more names for nomination following publication of this list in the October Wave:
Nomination by Petition. Additional names of candidates for directors can be nominated by petition bearing the signatures of at least five (5) voting members
of the SVCA. Such petition shall be filed with the chairman of the nominating committee within ten (10)
days after mailing of the South Venice Beach Wave.
The determination of the nominating committee as to
form and timing of the petition(s) shall be final.
If further nominations are submitted, an expanded slate will be
published in the November issue of The Wave:
Names of additional qualified candidates shall be arranged on a ballot in alphabetical order. The new slate
of candidates will be published in the November issue
of the South Venice Beach Wave with instructions to
vote for the total number of seats. The deadline to
receive ballots will be November 30. The board at its
December meeting will tally the votes and declare the
candidates with the greatest number ELECTED.

A glimpse into our history
A South Venice history:
“Our Little Corner of Florida”
In 1990, long time South Venice resident Vida
Davis Hoffacker self-published a history of the
area titled “Our Little Corner of Florida”. It’s full
of delightful reminiscences by those ‘who were
there’ in the earliest days of South Venice, stories
of the early families and of what life was like .
Here are a few excerpts from the book:
1955—Early settlers decided they needed to devise some form of self government. On New
Years’ Eve a group met at the Suncoast Trailer
Motel. (At the time, there were only 125 permanent year-round families in South Venice.) In January 1956, 120 residents met at the Englewood
Women’s Club and reviewed proposed by-laws
after which they voted to create the South Venice Civic Association and immediately elected its
first Board of Governors. All agreed that their

first priority was obtaining a ‘community house’. And indeed they
did it, with donations and sweat equity; the SVCA building was
dedicated in December of 1959.
1967– The new ferry, the Miss South Venice, arrived and it was
placed at G&G’s Garage on the Trail for all to see. It was built at
the Venice Airport by a former Navy Commander who as then
president of the SVCA and G’s husband whom, you recall, was in
the metal fabrication business. Gene salvages parts from the circus RR cars and made the ferry seats. A 6 HP engine was installed
and the boat boarding ramp was built by the Navy Commander in
his back yard. He built it well.
1972- the SVCA banded together and defeated a developer’s plan
to construct a condominium project along Alligator Creek.
