Issue 26 2011
HCCS
The Hills Christian Community School
24th August 2011
It always delights a Principal’s heart when children take ACTION, whether the initiative comes from them, their parents or teachers. Currently, it is happening with our Year 3 and Year 4 children, who are buying a native tree or shrub from ‘Trees for Life’ with their own money. With the help of teachers, parents and Verdun Resident, Sue Milne, the trees are being planted at the rear of Verdun Hall in an area they are also weeding and mulching. Some of the students have already planted a variety of seeds and measured progress as the seedlings grew, others have potted over 60 cuttings, some have visited Manor Nurseries to ask super questions and all will visit the Botanical Gardens and Observatory soon. The students are inquiring into the big idea of, “Why are plants important and how do we affect them?” Some of their questions have included: 
How does a flower turn into a flower? Bryanna 
If you remove the petals from a flower will it die? Lalla 
Are there plants that haven’t been discovered yet? Zoe 
How do plants help the environment? Lachlan Can you speed seeds up by cracking them open, rather than waiting for a natural bushfire? Jake 

What is the weakest part of the plant? Daniel 
How come we can’t see that the plants are alive? Lucy 
What season do plants release seed? Tom 
Why does bark fall off trees? Adrian 
Do carrots have seeds? Sophie 
Why do trees have bark? Brianna 
Can animals affect trees and the way they grow? Bohdi 
Are seeds classified as plants? If not, what are they? Allani 
What is the most popular flower in the world? Caitlin 
How many parts does an average flower have? Alyssa In time, all who want to enter a ‘just for fun’ competition will be given a pumpkin seed to plant, nurture and harvest over summer to find who can grow the biggest pumpkin? It is a very rich learning environment at HCCS right now as children have their curiosity and sense of wonder aroused as they inquire into BIG IDEAS about animals, properties of air, the affect of people on plants, disasters and democracy. Action takes many forms and it is pleasing to see teachers planning learning episodes encouraging big understandings and engaged brains. Kind regards, 5 / 5-7 Union Street

NUBIAN

FEMININE
FIRE
Last week, a group called
‘Nubian Gents and Feminine
Fire’ came to School and gave
us a concert. They are from
America and they had dark
skin and one of them is a really
good singer and the boys were
really funny except they
scared the little kids. It was
really COOL! The whole
performance was GREAT!!!!
By Claire
They were talking about how we
can do things and telling us to say,
“I CAN!” They chose Claire,
Rachel and Ella to get up the front
and do a dance. They got the
teachers to do a big wave, Mrs
Boucaut to do a funny dance and
Mr Wishart did a roll underneath
the Nubian Gents. By Jacinta
The whole School was blessed last week when very talented
members of Cornerstone College Bands, Ensembles and Choirs
performed for us. It was a real encouragement to HCCS Band
and HCCS Choir members.
