The Sound of Music
One of the greatest musicals of all time returns to the stage in a
magnificent new production to enchant and enthral the young
and the young at heart.
Based on Baroness Maria von Trapp’s 1949 autobiography, this
wonderfully lavish new staging of The Sound Of Music tells
the true story of the world-famous singing family, from their
romantic beginnings and search for happiness, to their thrilling
escape to freedom as their beloved Austria becomes part of the
Third Reich at the start of WWll.
The Sound of Music features some of the world’s most
memorable songs, including Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, DoRe-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, So Long, Farewell and of course, the
title song, The Sound of Music.
Lucy O’Byrne, fresh from her success on BBC One’s The Voice, plays
the title role of Maria. She became the competition’s runner up earlier
this year, impressing the nation and chart topper will.i.am with her
stunning vocal range. Award winning actor and TV heart-throb Gray
O’Brien plays the dashing Captain von Trapp. With a career that
has spanned over two decades, he is best loved for starring in Peak
Practice, Casualty and of course, Coronation Street.

PHOENIX THEATRE PRESENTS
Legally Blonde
For our 25th anniversary, Phoenix Theatre is delighted to
present the North-east Amateur Premiere of the award-winning
musical comedy Legally Blonde.
Perennially perky, Elle Woods is a girl who loves to be pampered
and shop for the latest all-pink outfits (and matching handbags,
of course). But don’t let this seemingly ditsy fashionista fool
you, this sorority sister is smarter than she seems and doesn’t
take “no” for an answer. So, when her boyfriend dumps her
for someone “more serious”, Elle sets out to win him back by
putting down the credit card and hitting the books. Ready to
revamp her image, Elle goes where no Delta Nu sorority girl has
gone before: Harvard Law School!
With a fantastic score, the show moves at breakneck speed from
the sorority house to the halls of justice, where the daredevil in
high heels defends a workout-queen in a murder trial, defying
the odds and proving that pink can save the day! Along the
way, our heroine (who has the cutest sidekick in the world, her
Chihuahua, Bruiser) proves that being yourself and going after
what you want never goes out of style.
From the awesome opening number, Omigod You Guys, to the
fabulous finale, it’s sheer entertainment all the way!

Jackie The Musical
Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online dating and no
Facebook, when teenage girls waited with bated breath by the
letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine.
In Jackie The Musical we revisit those heady days, and tell the
story of a recent divorcée who seeks advice once more from the
pages of her old Jackie annuals.
The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on first date’
and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages are all eagerly
devoured by our plucky heroine as she revisits the dizzy world
of the teen bible. With her ex and a handsome new guy in tow,
the valuable lessons she learnt as a girl begin to influence her
future and Jackie discovers the one person in control of her
life is... her.
Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders, Fat Friends)
Jackie The Musical is accompanied by a pulsating sound
track of classic 70’s hits. Thrill once more to the unmistakable
sounds of pop idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan
and many more. Written by Mike James and directed by Anna
Linstrum, with original choreography by Arlene Phillips, this
fun and feisty night out is a must see.

NEW TO
SEASON
THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE ROCK N ROLL MUSICAL
DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER LUSCOMBE
Following a record-breaking worldwide tour Richard O’Brien’s classic is ready to thrill you
once again.
Bursting at the seams with timeless classics, including Sweet Transvestite, Damn it Janet,
and of course, the pelvic-thrusting Time Warp, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show is a
non-stop party!
Be warned, this show has rude parts!
Book by RICHARD BEAN Music by DAVID ARNOLD Lyrics by RICHARD THOMAS
Based on the Woolley/Karlsen/Number 9 Motion Picture
Financed by the BBC, BMS Film Finance, BFI and Lip Sync Productions. Directed by Nigel Cole.
Screenplay by William Ivory. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.
Inspired by a true story and based on the hit movie, Made In Dagenham is an uplifting new
British musical comedy about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what is right.
Essex 1968. Like millions of other working women, each day Rita O’Grady is just trying to get
her husband out of bed, get the kids off to school and get to work at the factory on time.
But life is about to change forever when it’s announced that the girls in the stitching room
of Ford’s Dagenham car plant will have their pay grade dropped to ‘unskilled’. Rita then finds
the confidence to lead her friends in a battle against the might of Ford and the corruption
of the Union supposed to protect them. This show is sure to have you laughing, crying and
remembering that it’s only right to stand up for what you believe in.

Flare Path
Epic wartime romance
Set in 1942, against a backdrop of heartache and quiet
bravery, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in
wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews, their wives and
sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return.
RAF pilot Teddy and his wife, former actress Patricia, have
their marriage tested to the limit by the surprise arrival of her
ex-lover Peter Kyle.
Highly charged drama with a truly authentic taste of the fear,
camaraderie and passion combine when an unexpected and
dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at the centre of
an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies.
This major revival comes from the producers behind the hit
touring production of Birdsong.

Canned Laughter
It’s the late 1970s and funny men Alec, Angus and Rory are
one of Scotland’s top comedy acts.
And now they’re hitting the big time - top of the bill at HMT

comedy trio are riding high and nothing’s going to stop them.
Fast forward to today and the three find themselves

to break the group up? Will they be able to put their past
differences behind them? And why do they still care who
gets the biggest laugh?
Starring Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott this
brand new comedy written and directed by Ed Curtis (I
Dreamed A Dream, Never Forget, Jolson & Co) tells a tale of
friendship, ambition and regret. And of course laughter - lots

A CURVE LEICESTER PRODUCTION
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Based on the novel by Truman Capote
Adaptor Richard Greenberg
Director Nikolai Foster
Designer Matthew Wright
Music Grant Olding
Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written
by Truman Capote and so memorably portrayed by Audrey
Hepburn in the iconic 1961 film, is being given a new lease of
life as a stage play with music in a sparkling, sophisticated
production starring the award-winning Verity Rushworth (Best
Scene Soap Awards 2015 for Emmerdale, The Sound of Music,
Hairspray) as Holly.
Adapted by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony and Olivier Awardwinning playwright Richard Greenberg and directed by Nikolai
Foster, this tale of vivacious, good-time girl Holly Golightly and
her fantastical existence in 1940s New York City, is told through
the eyes of a young writer, completely fascinated by this
exquisite extrovert who every woman wants to be, and every
man wants to be with.
With memorable songs from the era, this stylish production
is set to capture the hearts of audiences and sparkle like a
diamond in a Tiffany’s window.

Cinderella
Next winter discover the enchanted, sparkling world of
Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella, in the European
premiere of this most beloved fairy tale.
In her grief, the young Cinderella plants a rose at her mother’s
graveside. When her father remarries, the future seems bleaker
than ever. Her wicked stepmother is intent on pushing aside
kind and beautiful Cinderella in favour of her two nasty step
sisters. The course of true love never did run smooth but
Cinderella does meet her prince and romance blossoms.
Acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant Lord’s
luxurious costumes and extravagant sets create a glittering
fantasy world peopled with characters that are touching,
funny and real. Dazzling against the light and dark of
Prokofiev’s powerful score, this ravishing interpretation of the
timeless rags-to-riches romance is everything you could wish

The Three Dancers
plus other works
Rambert presents a triple bill full of passion, drama, worldclass dancing and live music.
Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking
true story which inspired a Picasso masterpiece. Now Rambert
springs the painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to
life the artist’s vivid Cubist imagery and the themes of ecstasy
and doom which haunt his work. Choreographed by Didy
Veldman, The 3 Dancers features music by leading Australian
composer Elena Kats-Chernin.
Two lovers meet by moonlight in Transfigured Night. Their
confrontation is shown from different points of view, revealing
their hopes, fears and secrets. Created by two-time Olivieraward winning choreographer Kim Brandstrup, it is a dramatic
love story through virtuosic dancing to Schoenberg’s achingly
beautiful score.
The programme is completed by Frames, an inventive, visually
arresting piece by dancemaker Alexander Whitley. 12 performers
skilfully manipulate 70 interlocking metal bars, forming shapes,
structures and spaces which, quite literally, frame their dancing
in a different light.

Swan Lake
World Premiere
Scottish Ballet’s breathtaking production of Swan Lake is set
to enchant a whole new generation with an imaginative retelling of the timeless tale.
Swan Lake portrays the love story of Siegfried and the beautiful
swan queen Odette. As fate has it, Siegfried betrays Odette as
he mistakenly declares his love for Odile, the dark seductress.
Eventually Odette forgives Siegfried, but the trust between
them has been broken and Siegfried is forced to face life
without her forever.
Choreographed by the award-winning British dance maker
David Dawson, Swan Lake will demonstrate his visceral and
daring work which has made him one of the most innovative
dance makers working in classical ballet today.
With ethereal and stylish sets and costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s
iconic score performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra,

After a 3 year break, Scott School of Dancing are ecstatic to return to HMT in 2016. This will be our 16th show (the 4th one in HMT), and wow
have we came a long way since then. I am a very proud teacher and delighted that some of my pupils are now dancing professionally and some
have achieved diplomas and degrees. I have fabulous teaching staff which is enhanced by my classroom assistants and helpers. It’s ‘A special
family’ and I’m left wondering where would I be without them? … My pupils range from the very cute 2 year old’s to the mature and stunning
26 year old’s, the latter are looked up to for guidance and help. My students work extremely hard at all times, but more so over the next few
months when they will be striving to where we want them to be by show time! All my students are stars in my eyes. With an array of colour,
sparkle and enthusiasm for dance, the show will keep you on the edge of your seat!!

Christmas
Show!
By Simon Puttock, adapted by Dougie Irvine
Way up in the deep blue night sky, a twinkling star hears a little girl’s birthday wish . . . she wishes she could dance with the stars.
Wanting to make this wish come true, the star tells the moon, the moon tells the sun, the sun tells the wind and the rain, and
together they dream up a wonderful plan.
Told through a magical mix of music, light and imagination, A Ladder to the Stars is a heartfelt and humorous story of what can
happen when the universe hears your dreams.
Join us at The Lemon Tree this Christmas for the perfect festive treat for a young audience aged 3-7, their parents and carers.

Bach Masterworks - The Art of Fugue
Canadian pianist, Angela Hewitt OC OBE, has become one of the
foremost pianists of her age and regularly performs in recital and with
orchestras across the globe. Following a ten year project to record
all of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, she is now heralded as
today’s leading exponent of that composer’s work, and has won a
huge following. The catalogue was described by The Sunday Times as
“one of the recorded glories of our age”, and she now brings two of
its highlights to the stunning acoustic of the Music Hall. The Goldberg
Variations and The Art of Fugue are two of the most significant works
of one of the most important and influential composers of all time.

Glinka and Mussorgsky made Russian music glitter with
the colours of a Fabergé egg; a century later in the Soviet
Union, Dmitri Shostakovich is said to have lamented
a life turned grey. But there are few more gripping
documents of that life than his First Violin Concerto; a
brooding political thriller of a piece, with a core of raw
emotion. The award-winning Moscow-born violinist Boris
Brovtsyn grew up immersed in its world; as the former
music director of the Bolshoi, meanwhile, Alexander
Vedernikov, is perfectly placed to bring out all the drama,
the spectacle, and the undercurrent of passion in both
Glinka’s ballroom romance and Mussorgsky’s fantastic
musical picture gallery.

Martin Suckling Nocturne for Cello and Violin
G minor has long been associated, in Mozart’s work, with
agitation, anguish and desperation (look to his 40th
Symphony or his first Piano Quartet for evidence). This
quintet is no different, sinking as it does into an out-ofcharacter contemplative melancholy. With the addition
of the extra viola adding that essential extra flesh, it’s
easy to see why this and Mozart’s five other quintets
are considered so spectacular, paving the way for the
romantic model…
…the model that was perfected and, arguably,
transcended by Brahms, whose second quintet was
intended as his last ever work. His Opus 111, he claimed,
had said all he could as a composer and no more works
should be expected.
Glasgow-born composer Martin Suckling’s Nocturne is
something different altogether: its feather-light, ethereal,
lingering slides and tones will stay with you long after the
performance ends.

Brahms was an utterly romantic, secretive, self-critical
and revolutionary composer, who inspired many
including Schoenberg and Stravinsky. He was, however,
fundamentally conservative, drawing inspiration from
Bach and Beethoven. Symphony No 4 closes with a
passacaglia modelled directly on Bach.
The back-story of criticism and suppression of
Schumann’s majestic Violin Concerto is at last fading
in the face of genuine fascination. Russian-born Alina
Ibragimova is a persuasive advocate of the work.

Hans Gál
Mini Festival
Sunday 13 - Monday 14 March 2016
This is very different and special: a Mini-Festival of
two concerts on consecutive days to celebrate the life
and music of Hans Gál (1890-1987). It is likely that you
may not know of this composer, a refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria who settled in
Edinburgh, where he lived for the rest of his life, and taught in the Music Department of
Edinburgh University. Although he composed prolifically throughout his long life, even
into his 90s, his music was seen as too romantic and not “avant-garde” enough for the
music establishment of the 50s ,60s and 70s. Thankfully, after the neglect his music
suffered during his lifetime, there is now a much renewed interest in it.
Sunday 13 March 2016 3pm
This concert will feature five musicians, all of whom have either recorded some of Hans
Gál’s music, or who have his music in their repertoire and enjoy the opportunity to
perform it. Pianist Leon McCauley, who recorded all of Gál’s piano music on a 3-CD set
in 2005, will play some piano solos. Sarah Beth Briggs, also a pianist, will perform Gál’s
oboe and piano sonata with oboist Fraser Kelman, the Five Songs for Mezzo-Soprano
with Judy Brown, and the Suite for cello and piano with Mark Bailey, the cellist of the
Edinburgh Quartet. Altogether this is quite a line-up!

String Quartet No. 1 op. 41,1
Since 1999, the Bozzini Quartet has been an original voice in
new, contemporary, experimental and classical music. Their
skew is radically contemporary, propelling the hyper-creative
Montréal scene, and beyond. Not content to parlay received
wisdom, the quartet cultivates an ethos of risk-taking, and
boldly venture off the beaten track.
With rigorous qualitative criteria, they have nurtured a vastly
diverse repertoire, unbiased by the currents of fashion. This has
led to over a hundred and thirty commissioned pieces, as well
as close to two hundred other premiered works.
A Bozzini Quartet concert is an art happening, with
meticulous and sensuous attention to detail.

APA’s Associate Artist Programme 2015
The Associate Artist Programme is a new initiative for APA, inviting
artists to work in residence at the Music Hall and The Lemon Tree.
The programme seeks to unite local musicians/composers/creatives
from different artforms with the aim of nurturing and developing
Aberdeen’s creative scene; while also supporting the artists in
developing their own practice and creating new work. This year
we’ve invited contemporary folk musician and composer Aidan
O’Rourke and vocal sculptor Jason Singh to work with us on
investigating the idea of CONNECT.
Since June of this year Aidan and Jason have been working with different groups from across the
area and with around 30 individual instrumentalists and vocalists, all from different musical genres,
experience and age. They have been playing and composing together, improvising and having fun.
The project is building towards a fantastic conclusion to coincide with the temporary closure of the
Music Hall.
CONNECT:ED – Thursday 31 March 2016, 7.30pm, MH
This night will showcase the new work created by Aidan and Jason through the “Connect” project with
artists from across the region.
LIGHTS OOT HOOTENANNY, Saturday 2 April 2016, 9pm, MH
Following the biggest and best ceilidh the Music Hall has seen, Aidan and Jason will provide the perfect
dedication to the hall with the premiere of their new work “Hibernation” as the lights go out for the last
time before the multi-million pound transformation.
GET INVOLVED
If you are an instrumentalist or vocalist interested in working with Aidan or Jason, please get in touch.
Or if you would just like to listen, let us know and we’ll invite you along to open sessions. Follow the
sounds being created at apaconnect.wordpress.com.

Swedish band Sabaton have been a
major force in the power metal field
since the mid-2000s, but had to battle
through significant difficulties to get
there, which may explain their eventual
creative obsession with everything warrelated. The band became increasingly
successful across Europe, witnessed on
2011’s live album, World War Live: Battle
Of The Baltic Sea, featuring a dozen
tracks and ten different countries.
Scotland’s own Alestorm’s music is
characterised by a pirate theme and
they refer to their genre as “True

By popular demand, star of stage and

Ten Good Reasons became the biggest
selling album of 1989 and remains a
massive fan favourite with two solo No.1
singles Too Many Broken Hearts and Sealed
with a Kiss. It also featured a duet with
Kylie Minogue, Especially for You, which
reached No.1.
Described by one British national paper
as “one of our finest songwriters”, Paul
was a member of The Housemartins until
they disbanded in 1988 when he became
a member of The Beautiful South, who
had great success with a series of hits
inc. the number-one single A Little Time.
Jacqui joined the line up in 1994 and
among their most successful hits during
her stint were Rotterdam, Perfect 10, Don’t

After The Beautiful South disbanded in
2007, Paul subsequently reunited with

The work of Scott Bradlee & Postmodern
Jukebox has been viewed on YouTube
well over a hundred million times. Most
of those doing the viewing, however,
are not fully aware of the method to
Bradlee’s madness.
On the surface, the method is video – clips
of full-band performances (that’s Bradlee
on piano) shot in the bandleader’s living
room with a single stationary camera.
In fact, Bradlee’s method runs deeper.
He’s educating his audience about 20thcentury song styles; he’s commenting
on the elasticity of the pop form; he’s
confounding cultural context; he’s uniting
generations; he’s breaking the rules.

Sarah Millican
Outsider 2016
In the past when you put Sarah Millican
outside, she asked things like:
‘Why? Where is the taxi? Do I need a
cardie?’ and said things like: ‘There’ll be
wasps. I’ve nothing to sit on. Is that poo?
Can we go home?’
But things have changed. Now she has
outside slippers. She can tell a chaffinch
from a tit (hey). But she still can’t tell if it’s
an owl or her husband’s asthma.
Sarah Millican is venturing outside. Bring
a cardie.
“To watch Sarah Millican is to watch a
box of comedy fireworks going off”

The Circus
of Horrors
SOMETHING DIFFERENT
COMEDY
The show that stormed into the finals
of Britain’s Got Talent & now a West End
smash is back to mark its 21st Anniversary
in spectacular style.
The latest incarnation Welcome to the
Carnevil is set in Victorian London in 1899,
Jack the Ripper was still at large & this
was the age of the Freakshow, a young girl
dreamt of running away to join the Circus
only to see her dream become a nightmare
in a decrepit & corpse ridden Carnevil,
plagued by a swamp of Killer Klowns,
Sword Swallowers, Demon Drawfs, Death
Deifying Aerialists and lots lots more, a
show ruled by the undead & climaxing in
an awesome flaming apocalypse.
