FOR YOUR REFLECTION
T
his year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday today, focusing on the theme “Open the Door of
Faith.” Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be
commissioned for their ministry. Today we have a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each
person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical
Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
The word “Catechetical” might be more familiar than you think. Many Catholics have used the word
“catechism” for years, and they know it has something to do with the compendium of the Church’s teachings. The word comes from a Greek word meaning ‘to echo or resound.” Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church’s teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the
church.
Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. This ministry of teaching in the name of the
Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is
only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think
about our responsibility to share our faith with others.
Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of
faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we
also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation.
A Prayer for Catechists
O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists
to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family.
We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs.
May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them,
a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is compassionate and consoles.
We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in
Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ
addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church.
We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Domingo Catequético
ste año, la iglesia celebra hoy el Domingo Catequético, centrándose en el tema “Abre la puerta de la
fe.” A esos que la comunidad ha designado para servir como catequistas serán llamados para ser comisionados para su ministerio. Hoy tenemos una maravillosa oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el papel que
cada persona desempeña, en virtud del bautismo, en transmitir la fe y ser testigos del evangelio. El Domingo Catequético es una oportunidad para que todos puedan volver a dedicarse a esta misión como una comunidad de fe.
La palabra “Catequético” podría ser más familiar de lo que tú piensas. Muchos católicos han usado la palabra “catecismo” durante años, y saben que tiene algo que ver con la recopilación de las enseñanzas de la
iglesia. La palabra viene del griego y significa “eco o resonancia” catequesis es el acto de resonancia, traer
las enseñanzas de la iglesia al mundo. Un catequista es uno que enseña en el nombre de la iglesia.
La catequesis es un ministerio distinto y especial en la iglesia. Este ministerio enseña en el nombre de Dios,
la iglesia tiene una dignidad profunda, la cual es porque los catequistas son formalmente designados por la
iglesia. Es lógico que dejemos de lado un día para poner en relieve el ministerio e invitar a toda la comunidad de la iglesia para pensar en nuestra responsabilidad de compartir nuestra fe con los demás.
Los padres son realmente los primeros catequistas de sus hijos. Ellos preparan el suelo y plantan las primeras semillas de la fe. En el Domingo Catequético, no solo destacamos el trabajo de los catequistas en las
parroquias y escuelas sino que también felicitamos a los padres y tutores y los alentamos en tomar en serio
su papel de hacer que sus hogares sea un lugar donde la fe se transmita a la próxima generación.
Oración para los catequistas
Oh Dios, nuestro Padre Celestial, tú has dado el don a estos catequistas para ser mensajeros del evangelio
a nuestra familia parroquial.
Los elevamos a ti en acción de gracias y de interceder por ellos con respecto a
sus expectativas y necesidades.
Podemos estar atentos a la presencia de tu palabra en ellos,
una palabra que levanta y afirma, suscita y desafía, es compasiva y consuela.
Oramos para que nuestra familia parroquial siempre sea bendecida con esos que responden a la llamada a
participar en la misión profética de Cristo como catequistas.
También podemos estar abiertos a la llamada universal al servicio que Cristo dirige a todos sus discípulos,
aportando nuestros dones en la comunión de fe, la iglesia.

Treasures from our Tradition
Although New Year’s Day has been fixed firmly on January 1 for several hundred years, Labor
Day has the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and routine. The pace of life has since picked up,
and new schedules and commitments crowd us. In the background is God’s call to consider the third commandment, still life‑giving and binding, to make holy the Lord’s Day by worship and rest. Jews see the
Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship, but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with
God by delighting in the beauty of creation and the joy of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating
the wonder of God’s creation, but not disturbing it.
For Christians in the first three centuries, the Lord’s Day, Sunday, was not for rest, but worship. It
was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and after Eucharist hurried off to daily routines. Today
we come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work, not a day of rest. The Lord’s Day is not the Sabbath, but we can enhance Sunday’s ability to transform us if we consider embracing some Sabbath values:
having a family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place, making room in our lives to open ourselves
more fully to holiness of life in Christ.

Some Thoughts on Grief and Loss
What I have found from doing previous groups
is that issues around forgiveness come up every
time we meet. It may have to do with forgiving
yourself, the caretakers, and also the loved one
who has died.
Questions such as: Did I do enough? I should
have done more? I would have done more if
…? Etc.
Grief is a lifelong process. It is similar to
waves in the ocean. They come in sometimes
softly and then pull back slowly or they can
come crashing in and pull out in a loud and
powerful way.
Gather with those who are walking
the same walk as you.

Money, of itself, is not evil. We all need sources of
income for even the most basic necessities – food
and shelter. And in our world of ever increasing
complexity, we find that money is required for various other reasons – insuring our homes and cars,
maintaining our health, paying for utilities, etc. On
the other hand, an unhealthy desire to accumulate
money for power, fame or influence can lead to a
multiplicity of evils.
In the Gospel of Luke, our Lord tells us that we
cannot be devoted both to wealth and to God in the
same way.

LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS

Todos en nuestra vida tenemos algunos momentos de gran alegría en los momentos que
encontramos algo que habíamos perdido.
Jesús nos dice en lenguaje popular que algo así
le pasa a Dios, nuestro Padre, cuando nos vuelve a encontrar. El nos busca con afán, no para
castigarnos, sino para llevarnos a su casa.
Los cristianos nos reunimos para celebrar la fe
y el camino rumbo a la libertad y la vida, teniendo a Dios como líder y autor de la vida con
plenitud para todos. El no nos rechaza por ser
pecadores. Por el contrario, nos busca incansablemente para celebrar con nosotros el banquete festivo de la fraternidad. La eucaristía es
la celebración del amor de Dios en nuestra vida “Ese hombre acoge a los pecadores y come
con ellos”. Más aún: Jesús nos acoge en su casa y se entrega a nosotros.
¡Cuidado! Jesús puede armar su
tienda fuera de la de nosotros.
Sin embargo, la eucaristía no deja de señalar
las idolatrías y fariseísmos de los cristianos: el
hecho de recibir el cuerpo del Señor no nos coloca sobre los demás. Si nos consideramos mejores ciertamente Jesús armará su tienda fuera
de nuestras iglesias y comunidades. Nosotros
no somos los noventa y nueve justos que no
necesitan conversión. Somos la oveja descarriada y la moneda perdida. Y tal vez seamos
también el hijo mayor que no ha comprendido
todavía el amor preferencial del Padre por los
marginados y pecadores.
Dios se alegra al vernos de nuevo.
El evangelio de hoy nos habla de la alegría del
retorno a Dios. El Señor nos presenta dos
ejemplos. Uno es de un pastor que está tan feliz cuando encuentra una oveja extraviada. El
otro es el de una mujer que se pone a gritar de
contenta porque dio con una moneda que había perdido. La alegría de ese pastor y de esa
mujer nos dicen algo de la alegría de Dios
cuando volvemos a El. Todo ser humano somos para Dios algo de mucho valor que aprecia en sumo grado. El Salvador viene a buscar
lo que estaba perdido, y cuando da con nosotros, proclama ante todos la buena nueva de
salvación.
Muchas veces nos sentimos culpables de algo
y este sentimiento nos atormenta interiormente. Cuando escuchamos una palabra de perdón
y comprensión, nos aliviamos y sentimos paz.
Eso les pasa a los que siguen al Señor, porque
el trae palabras que levantan el espíritu y dan
esperanza. La humanidad tiene necesidad de
alguien que traiga alegría y paz al espíritu. La
fe nos da al autor de la esperanza, a Dios que
es el Padre.
En la parábola del hijo pródigo: el hijo pródigo, hombre sin ley pero sensible a lo injusto,
es figurado de pecadores y paganos; el hermano mayor endurecido, observador, escrupuloso y carente de misericordia, representa a los
fariseos; y el padre misericordioso es, naturalmente, Dios.
El padre es la figura principal de la parábola,
seguido por la del hermano mayor y, finalmente el hijo pródigo. Los tres tienen actitudes distintas El hijo menor reconoce su error, el hermano mayor condena a su hermano, y el padre
derrocha alegría con la acogida, el banquete y
la fiesta.
Reflexión
Y nosotros ¿con cuál de los tres personajes nos identificamos? Con el padre,
perdonamos a nuestros hijos por sus
errores. Con el hijo mayor juzgando a
los demás o con el hijo pródigo, arrepintiéndonos de nuestros errores, y regresando a casa de nuestro padre.

enthusiastic people to share the faith with the young people of our
parish. We need catechists who are willing to share their faith with
our children as well as those willing to help with the administrative side
of our work.
Training and materials will be provided.
Classes run from mid September to the beginning of May.
Classes are held on Saturday and Sunday for grades 1-6

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
El santo Peruano Fray Juan Macias fue dominico. Este santo es reconocido como el amparo
de los pobres, patrón de los emigrantes y ladrón del purgatorio. El concepto del purgatorio es un
poco difícil de entender. La Iglesia adoptó la creencia en la última purificación de los elegidos
(nombrado el Purgatorio) en los siglos XV y XVI en los concilios de Florencia y Trento. Ella se
basa en las Escrituras que se refieren en la purificación en el fuego (1 Corintios 3:15; 1 Pedro 1:7)
y en la práctica de la oración por los difuntos como aparece en 2 Macabeos 12:46 y Job 1:5. San
Juan Crisóstomo dijo: “Si los hijos de Job fueron purificados por el sacrificio de su padre, ¿porqué
vamos a dudar que nuestras oraciones por los difuntos puedan hacerle llegar alguna consolación a
los que han muerto? Ofrezcamos pues, nuestras oraciones por los difuntos. Los que están en purgación necesitan nuestro apoyo en la oración. Pidamos por ellos”.

FORMATION REGISTRATION
Registration for the 2013-14 Faith Formation Classes is currently open.
Registration forms for elementary, junior high and
high school confirmation can be picked up at the RE or Parish Offices or downloaded from the parish website.
Current and New students need to register.
Remember, it is an Archdiocesan requirement to have two consecutive years of religious education in order to receive sacrament.
Completed registration forms and fees must be hand delivered to the
RE office. A copy of the Baptismal Certificate must accompany all
NEW registrations. Even if a child was baptized at St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque Parish, a copy of the certificate must be included for all
children who are registering for Faith Formation for the very first time.

RETREAT WEEKEND
Have you registered yet for our November 1-3 young adult retreat
weekend? It's going to be an amazing event! Spend some time away
from your hectic schedule and responsibilities to relax, refresh, and
renew your relationship with God, others, and yourself. Our facilitator
will be musician, composer, and presenter Jesse Manibusan.
Never been on a retreat, or not sure what you'll get from the weekend?

retreat. Space is limited so register now and get the early registration
price of $150.

Nuestro programa de Formación Religiosa:
busca personas llenas de fe y personas
entusiastas para compartir la fe con los
jóvenes de nuestra parroquia. Para que
nuestros programas sean un éxito, necesitamos el ministerio de voluntarios. Necesitamos
catequistas que están dispuestos a compartir
su fe con nuestros hijos, así como aquellos
que deseen ayudar con la parte administrativa
de nuestro trabajo. Nos gustaría tener una (1)
catequista y un (1) Asistente por clase.

Join us for our 7th annual class learning the
"piece"-ful art of quilting.
Learn to hand-piece, appliqué and quilt. Design and
make your own quilt as the class works together on
the 2014 quilt for the Retreat Center.
Class fee will be a shared donation to cover the cost
of the materials for the Center's quilt and your own
supplies. No other fees are required. Bring a pencil,
notebook and ruler to the first class.
