100 “Dear Ashley”
-From the desk of Mr. Dibble, journalism
editor
Dear Readers,
It is with great pleasure I have
the honor to announce that
Ashley Tovar has written her
100th ARTICLE for the papers.
The Selah High School junior
has surpassed all other writers
with her consistency, and
dedication! This is an
incredible milestone- she’s
raising the bar for excellence in
our program and will set the
standard to beat for years to
come!
I think everyone who wants to be a part of Senior Council
should apply. We all have so much to offer and it’s such a great
way to get involved with the school, especially since it’s our last
year. Senior year is right around the corner and our class would
love your input. I plan to apply for Senior Council because I think
it would be an amazing experience because you get to vote on
senior events and you get to know new people. Being a part of a
club is so much fun, you get to make memories that will always
stay with you. It’s worth a shot to apply, later on you can say that
you tried and made it with no fear. It also looks really good on
scholarship and college applications. I hope you apply because we
may be able to get to know each other. It’s something you won’t
regret.
From Beginning to the 100th Article~
Below is re-printed the first article Ashley Tovar wrote for the
Sentinel when she was a freshman three years ago. It’s from
Volume I, Issue XII.
I believe that everyone can make a change in the world
Congratulations Ashley! whether it’s big or small. I want to give a hand to
everyone, as much as I can. By doing "Dear Ashley," I have
the opportunity to help you. Don't be shy or embarrassed
to send me a note or a letter of something that is causing you tribulation. It will be anonymous to
me and everyone else. I will try to help as many people as I can but don't think if I don't reply to
you that I don't care, I do. Located in the SJHS Counselors Office.
Dear Ashley,
I have been having trouble
with people bullying me,
calling me names. I just sit
there because I don't know
how to stick up for myself.
What should I do the next
time?
Remember that you are beautiful inside and out, no
matter what anybody else says. And also remember to be
the better person. You should let Mr. Gallaway or Mr. Ruark
know about this because it'll stop the bullying for yourself
and anybody else who is being bullied by the same people.
Nobody deserves to be treated badly.
Coaches.
The secret weapon
behind any football team. Making plays to
help the team win and talking to the
quarterback to help him through the rough
spots. They bring teams together and make
them what they are. Yet none of them get
as much commendation as they deserve,
so I will now talk about a Seahawks coach
that really changed the way of the
Seahawks, Jack Patera. Jack was born in
Bismarck, North Dakota and then moved to
Oregon where he went to school at
Washington High School in Portland. After
graduating High School he was enrolled at
the University of Oregon where he played
college ball from 1951-1954. He earned the
All-Pacific coast conference honors as a tackle in his senior year and was inducted into the Oregon Sports
Hall of fame in 1982. In 2000 he was inducted into the University of Oregon Hall of Fame. In 1955 he was
entered into the NFL drafts and was selected by the Baltimore colts as a fourth round pick. He was
selected as an offensive guard but was soon switched to the defense as a linebacker. He played a
linebacker for three seasons under the coaching of Weeb Ewbank. Then in 1958 he was traded to the
Chicago Cardinals and played there for two seasons under the head coaching of Frank Ivy. Then in 1960
he was selected by the Dallas Cowboys. He played as a middle linebacker. In the fourth game of the 1960
season with the cowboys he ended his career early with an unfortunate knee injury. Jack returned in 1961
but only played in two games and retired at the end of the season thus ending his career in professional
football.
His days on the field may have been over but he was always on the sidelines. In 1963 he returned
and joined the Los Angeles Rams and was a defensive line coach. During his time as a coach for the
rams he was responsible for directing the Fearsome Foursome an NFL powerhouse. In 1968 he was an
assistant coach for the New York Giants but left after one year to become a defensive line coach for the
Minnesota Vikings. Jack worked with the Vikings from 1969 to 1975 and went to Super Bowls IV, VIII and
IX with the Vikings. Now is the moment you have been waiting for. In 1976 Patera was hired to be the
head coach for the NEW Seattle Seahawks team. When he arrived he had started a very difficult task of
building this team from the ground up. Jack says “I had a team that could move the ball, but couldn’t stop
anybody. I figured that to win ballgames we’d simply have to gamble more often.” But the lack of talent still
didn’t stop Patera from winning games.
In the 1976 season the Seahawks finished their season with a 2-12 record which is a normal
number for a first year expansion team. In the 1976 season he should much promise to Jim Zorn
Seahawks quarterback and also to Steve Largent Seahawks wide receiver. They started to form an
offense. Jim Zorn and Steve Largent really formed the team and ended the season with an improved
record of 5-9. Then on the third season they ended with another improved record of 9-7. Patera was voted
coach of the year in 1978 by the Associated Press and Sporting News. Jack was also very strict with his
players for example he had them hold their helmet a certain way when the National Anthem was playing.
His relationship was cloudy with the Seahawks at
times though. Then on October 13th 1982 he was fired
by the Seahawks after the second game in the 1982
season along with John Thompson. After being fired
Patera never took another coaching job again and he
is completely retired from football. Jack now lives in
Cle Elum Washington with his three dogs. He and his
wife Susan are divorced and they have four children.
FUN FACT: Patera’s older brother Ken Patera was a
former Olympic weightlifter and professional wrestler.
A Few Flying Failures by Amy Compton
Da Vinci Unlike most 19th century inventors, who thought that in order to fly you needed straight wings, Da
Vinci thought about the idea of imitating a bird. The machine built to this standard was never named. Da Vinci
compared the largest muscle in each species bodies- for a bird, it’s the breast, for man, his legs- Da Vinci
designed a machine that focused on legs as the focal point of power. In which case, his design made it so the
legs would flap the wings. In order to control the direction, straps would be attached to his arms and head. Da
Vinci clearly stated that this flying test should be done over water; be it that the contraption weighted around
five hundred pounds. It is unrecorded whether or not this machine worked or not.
Clement Ader
“An area was laid out in a straight line unturfed, beaten, and leveled out with a roller so that
one could see and record the traces of the wheels from the slightest life to complete takeoff.” Ader’s aircraft, the
Eole, took after the concept and design of a bat. It’s 46 foot wings could fold upon themselves to reduce the
amount of space it took up. The Eole weighed 727 pounds and used a two-cylinder steam engine that weighed
200 pounds and built by Ader himself. The Eole did actually create lift, although it was only a few feet off the
ground. The flight was down a secluded part of the Parc D’Armainvillers grounds in France. It was an
uncontrolled, chaotic ride 164 feet from start to finish.
Six years later, in 1897, Ader told the French War Military he could build an even better machine, in which
he created the Avion III. The Avion III had a 52 foot wingspan and weighed 882 pounds. It’s length matched
it’s wingspan at 52.5 feet. Both the Eole and the Avion III had no tail, as Ader did not see a point in one. The
wings of the Avion III had cranks to control them, but turned too slowly to do any good. The story of if the
Avion III actually took off is sketchy. Ader says it did take flight, but some historians argued it was the wind. In
the end, the Avion III was too damaged to pursue any other test of flight. It remains a mystery whether or not
the Avion III ever did create lift.

Retirement Speech
Kaelan Nettleship
The Human Race is on top of the food chain, not because we are the most physically capable
species, but because of our mental superiority over all other known organisms. Our ability to learn
exceeds all others. This mental advantage has allowed us to survive through adaptation, and
advancement. Every year new technologies are developed, new ideas that make life easier. Our race
had advanced so far since prehistoric times and it is my job to predict how much more advance we
will come 25-150 years in the future.
Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)
1. As soon as humans could conceive of artificial intelligence, they have dreamt of it someday
becoming a reality. Many people want humanoid creations that will perform tasks for them at their
command. Although we have not met these expectations we still have established similar
technologies. One of the most recent forms of A.I. is Siri which was introduced when Apple created
the iPhone 4S. I believe that this technology will progress to something that we can only dream about.
By the year 2050 we will have designed a humanoid robot that can be commanded through speech to
do a variety of things, from simple tasks to business. You will be able to have conversations with
them and they will in a sense learn your routines to be most efficient when providing services to you.
Molecular Cloning
2. Immortality has been longed for by humans for millennia. I believe that molecular cloning will
continue to rapidly develop to a point at which we will be able clone every human organ. Once this is
developed you could continuously clone a person’s organs, so that you could replace the necessary
body parts to continuously survive without being hindered by oxidation or diseases. I also believe that
this will be used as a means of age reduction.
Warp Drives
3. Many sci-fi writers throughout human history imagined futuristic spacecraft that could travel
at the speed of light. Writers like Gene Roddenberry (Author of Star Trek) and Madeline L. Engle
(Author of A Wrinkle in Time) saw it another way and that was bending time. Time and light travel on
the same plane and stars are able to bend light because of their immense amount of mass
(gravitational pull). Looking at this
principle you can conclude that if you
had enough mass you could bend time

Derek Peters
Retirement Speech 2070
We have joined together today to honor the accomplishments of Derek Peters. Many of us know him as
a loving father, an amazingly loyal friend and an engineering innovator.
Derek began his career in the engineering field just 3 days after receiving his PHD in robotic
engineering from Stanford. Even when he was just starting out, he came up with many ingenious ideas that
would rock the engineering profession. One and a half years into his professional career as a robotic
prosthesis designer/creator, he discovered how to create steel infused starfish membranes. This discovery
allowed for enormous advances in not just prosthesis technology but also in almost every other field such as
cars, bikes, and warfare.
Derek next found his soul mate, Jane Doe. After dating for 7 months they were married. Two years
later they had twin boys – Drake and Josh. And after 5 years of marriage the little angel Meagan was born.
Derek, Jane and the rest of the family moved out of their triple wide trailer house in Aberdeen, South Dakota to
their 77,000 square foot mansion in Livingston, Montana. This extensive house is dug into the side of the
mountain which is at the outskirts of Yellowstone. From his home, Derek was able to continue in his
professional career.
At this point in time in his life, Derek started his
company – DPI – Derek Peters Industries. This company
has grown from a small dream to a huge enterprise. DPI
employees 4,000,000 people on 6 continents. DPI has
helped 1.5 million people who have lost appendages with
more than half a million of them being injured veterans.
Derek has personally donated all prosthesis to the injured
veterans.
Derek spent the next ten years perfecting the
hydraulic system in the robotic prosthesis. Now because of
his work, a person with prosthesis can drink a cup of hot
coffee without spilling a drop and is now capable of lifting
up to 5 times as much as with their original equipment. The
new hydraulic system that Derek developed compared to the
few in 2018 allow the prosthesis to move smoothly whereas
the old ones were very jerky and lacked power.
For the next 20 years Derek continued on in his work
on making minor improvements on his design. At the age of
63, Derek made his second huge discovery. He discovered
the self-replenishing energy source which we now call
replenegy. DPI now had two major divisions: one – its
original robotic prosthesis and the second one – making
double A sized replenegy cells. Josh runs the prosthesis division while Drake runs replenegy. Megan is the
company CFO.
Today - July 4th, 2076, Derek Peters – longtime friend and boss - is retiring at the age of 78. He has put
in 52 years into his industry. His presence in the office will be missed but we still look forward to seeing him at
all of our future parties since he will always be the life of the party
Google Smart Contact Lens
-Trenton Murdock
Since Google’s announcement of its smart
glasses, they have continued to astound us with
their innovation. Recently, they announced a
Google Smart Contact Lens that is able to
comfortably fit in your eye, if you think contacts
are comfortable. The contact lens has a gold
hairlin
e base, a sensor that is glitter small, and
an antenna. The hardware parts detect glucose
levels that will relay the information to a smart
device through bluetooth connectivity. This
means that people with diabetes will be able to
take their glucose levels quick and pain free
because they don’t have to prick their fingers,
they just have to cry. In addition, they are
working to add an LED light to blink with
glucose level is high or low. Other companies,
like Microsoft, have introduced this technology before, but with Google’s reach, they could go even further. For
now, the features are limited, but with small hardware pieces and creative thinking, the future is open to far
more possibilities.
Tanner Rich- Retirement
Speech 2070
Today is the day we are marking the retirement of Doctor Tanner Rich. She has been with
Frankford General Hospital as an Amnesia Surgeon for more than 37 years, and everyone will feel
her absence greatly. Tanner was hired in 2029 by Dr. Benjamin J. Marshall, who discovered the cure
for amnesia. Dr. Rich trained under Dr. Marshall to learn the procedures of amnesia surgery during
her internship. Within the first 10 years of her employment, she designed a rehab clinic that uses
robotics and computers to help patients after the surgery ease back into their everyday life. She has
also trained 3 other amnesia surgeons in the hospital and has passed on her knowledge to many of
the doctors. She was on a team with Dr. Green that invented bioengineered tooth regeneration and
researched the benefits of having robotics in the
hospital with Dr. Henry. As we all know, Frankford
General Hospital was the first to use laser
treatment for wounds, but what you may not
realize, is that Dr. Rich was also a big part of
getting this program started. She has
accomplished many great things in her career
and has been an amazing leader and developer.
We will miss her great humor and the respect she
has for all of her patients. We wish her the best in
her retirement.
The life of a Robert Lince elementary student
By Amanda Graham
Every day there are students going to an elementary school. Do you ever wonder how much school has
changed since you went to school? Well, this article is about the life of three current elementary students and
an 8th grader that went to Robert Lince elementary school.
One of the fourth graders named “Charlie” says that life as an elementary student is amazing. All of the
teachers are nice and have very fun classes. His favorite class is science because of all of the fun experiments
they get to do throughout the year. With being an elementary student, the kids are nice and there are no
bullies. In fourth grade it seems like you have a huge amount of friends that really care for you. Charlie says
that he and his two best friends, Dennis, and Michael are the most popular and the nicest kids in the fourth
grade. Their favorite teacher is Mrs. Ladd. She was the one teacher that the boys always looked up to even if
they weren’t in her class. Charlie’s kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Maybe was an all-time favorite for the kids. She
treated them like they really were her own kids. Cameron is a third grader and proud of it. He has Mrs. Ladd
but his favorite teacher was Mrs. Richardson. She teaches second grade and always makes the kids have fun.

Fanfiction Four- By Kyla Ray
“Think about my offer to you, Raven. I’ll
see you very soon to hear your answer.” And like
that, Slade disappeared. It had been quiet the past
few days since the encounter with Slade. The
most action we got were small robberies and
dealing with Mammoth, Gizmo, and Jinx. It was kind of nice not having to worry about him being around, and
Robin seemed to have cooled down for the most part.
Crash! I jumped awake from my wonderful sleep and sat up quickly, looking around. ‘That didn’t
come from my room,’ I thought to myself. Pulling on my royal blue cloak, I bolted outside and into the living
room, only to find myself face to face with Slade. My heart stopped in my chest as I gazed into the one black
eye facing me, and I could tell that underneath his half bronze-half black mask that he was smirking down at
me. My question is, how come Robin wasn’t out here? Hadn’t he heard the loud crash?
“Hello, Raven. Today’s the day. Will you join me and bring forth darkness together, or will you remain
at that ignorant boy’s side?” Slade had me pinned to the doors, which unfortunately didn’t open for me.
“I won’t join you. Not now, not ever. Leave me alone, Slade, or I’ll give you a nightmare you’ll never
escape.” My words dripped with venom, like that of a rattlesnake’s fangs. I glared at him cruelly, even though
inside I was trembling with fear. He only smirked some more at me, and before I could run, he gripped my
wrists tightly and sent severe shockwaves through me. Pain engulfed me like the wild ocean does to a boat
during a storm, and soon, darkness enveloped me.
“Ugh…” I groaned, still sore from the pain Slade had dealt me, but when I fluttered my eyes open, I
only saw my 4 friends peering down at me worried. With a bit of help, I rose to my feet and looked around.
Nothing was broken, and Slade was nowhere in sight. “Where’s Slade?”
Beast Boy gawked at me like as though I was speaking a different language. “Slade? Slade’s not here,
Raven. In fact, he never was here.”
Cyborg studied me before speaking. “I think you were dreaming, Rae. If Slade was here, we would’ve
known about it.”
Robin gawked at me, as if to understand what was happening with me. The same thing had happened to
him before, when Slade had returned and haunted him. I quickly averted my eyes, pulling on my hood.
“You’re right, I must’ve been dreaming. I’m just going to go back to sleep, sorry.” I hurried off down the hall,
arriving at my door when a hand stopped me. I whipped around, eyes wide with fear at the thought of Slade’s
dark gaze meeting mine. Thankfully, it was just Robin. Even through his mask, I could tell he was concerned.
“Raven, you can talk to me. I know what you’re talking about. Remember? You even went in my head
and saw him. Is he bothering you still?” I hated to admit it, but I was kind of glad he was so worried. All this
time, I thought of myself as being a pain and burden to the team. I never really spent time with them, and as
soon as we’d get home from fighting crime I’d go in my room. “I know I can, Robin.” I spoke quietly in my
usual raspy tone. “But this is much more complicated. Slade,
Ella Peters
at the time, was never truly there. He was indeed haunting
your mind, but never physically… Slade is truly here now.

me with what would seem to be a sad look in his eyes. “Be
careful, and don’t get into too much trouble.”
I nodded to him, and before I took off, I slowly walked
over and hugged him. “You too, Boy Wonder.” He hugged me
back, and with that, I bid them farewell, taking off into the night

Can You Dunk? By Josh Steiner
The 21st century NBA players, are they the
best? Would they be able to throw down the best
dunks against previous greats? Many people
believe that in fact, most of the best players of the
NBA are not today’s players at all, but players from
years gone by.
One excellent example is Michael Jordan. After
all, Michael Jordan was in the Slam Dunk contest
of 1987 and 1988 and took first in both of those
contests. In 1988 Jordan put down one of the most
memorable dunks ever done. This was the year of Jordan’s iconic free-throw line dunk. For the
people that were privileged to watch the 1988 dunk contest they say it is etched in their minds
forever. Jordan needed 49 points to win his second consecutive Gatorade Slam-Dunk Contest; he
knew exactly what dunk he must do. Michael Jordan jogged to the opposite end of the court and
sprinted to the free throw line where he glided through the air and slammed down the dunk. The
judges called this unquestionably perfect. Michael received the fifty he needed and took home the
Slam-Dunk Contest.

Life of the Yakama
by Dylan Madrid
Darkness. Guarding the horses again. Not a lot goes on during this time. The day is only just beginning.
Normally we change off who watches the horses so that nobody can steal them. We traded hundreds of dried
salmon so that we could acquire these horses, and we would be very saddened if we lost them.
After my shift watching the horses I get into my buckskin skirt and moccasins so that we can go hunting.
Before Sunrise is the best time to leave for hunting as it takes a while to get to the hunting grounds. I’m not yet
old enough to use a spear or bow, so the adults just have me throw stones. While we walk to the hunting ground
we normally play some fun games. The women weave us hoops that we can throw stones through as we walk.
Most of the time we would hunt elk, buffalo and deer. Unless you were one of the adults of the village who got
to use spears and bows, you would hunt rabbits with the other children of the village. These provided food and
clothing for us. We would dry the meat and season it, having it as a jerky.
If it wasn’t a day of hunting we would probably work on housing. Most of the
time we would live in a pit house. These were great during the winter months as you
could easily have a fire going in the center, and have no real worry about having it
burn down. When we were on the move so we could hunt or move locations, we
would normally have a tipi set up. These were nice as they were quicker to set up than
a pit house, and easy to transport.
As it becomes later in the day, when the skies become a beautiful haze of
purple and orange, we sit around the main fire. Normally at this time we praise the
many gods that help us in our daily lives. From the Earth to the Sky, we always make

months. After eating we would listen to the Elder’s stories. They’d tell us of we
should respect the salmon as it comes back year after year for us to catch.
When it was time for rest we would head to the pit

how once the food left his hands, it was hers and he couldn’t
touch it. A lot of the time even after hearing the village Elder’s

learned of amazing hunts that him and the others used to do.
There was always adventure to be had in the village.
The Trade By Devon Garner
Robinson Cano on the Mariners? Robinson was recently traded to the Mariners from the Yankees
in December. Last season in 2013 he batted a .314 with 107 RBI (runs batted in) and 190 homeruns. For
a 10- year contract the Mariners signed him for $240 million.
They signed a five-time all-star player in 2006, and 2010-2013. At the time the Mariners weren’t
saying much. But the Yankees manager said “He was a great Yankee. He was a great player. I think
everybody tried hard to get the deal done. We just never got close enough obviously. We wish him the
best. We hope he has a long, healthy, career.”
Mariner’s thoughts
They need more than just Robinson Cano. They Mariners are also trying to sign David Price (a
pitcher from the rays). Jack Zduriencik said “We think even at this number he is going to perform and has
performed over what the contract is going to pay him”
Yankees thoughts
The Yankees have signed Scott Sizemore. Brian Cashman said “This is Robbie Cano’s first free
agency, I think that kind of explains the emotion and feelings, whether it comes out as disrespect or
disappointment.”
Even though Robinson Cano is an amazing player he is 31, 32 and when his contract ends he will
almost be 41, 42. Will he be able to keep playing the way he is even though he is the most durable player
in baseball?
The Mariners are also in talks with free-agent outfielder nelson Cruz and also looking at Fernando
Rodney.
He was just like his father. His father, José Cano also signed with the Yankees as a free agent in
1980. Cano was born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic and grew up there. Now 6 foot 210
pounds with a son named Robinson and a wife who live in the Dominican Republic. Just became a
naturalized U.S. citizen on 10/13/2012.
“I didn’t feel respect. I didn’t get respect from them… I was hoping they would come up with a better offer.
My goal was to stay there… I didn’t see any effort from the Yankees.” Robinson said.
Coastal People By MarLaena Hedberg
I woke up on a warm Spring morning, wondering what that wonderful, mouthwatering smell was. I
then realized that my mom was cooking fresh salmon that my father had caught the night before. I got up
out of my grass bed, put on my cedar bark skirt and top, and I walked outside into the beautiful sunshine
where my family was waiting for me around the campfire with my breakfast ready.
I ate my breakfast, helped my mom clean up, and went to explore the wilderness. I saw many
features my land offers. I saw the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean, where we do most of our
hunting. We usually hunt for seals, porpoises, and sea lions. We sometimes hunt for Orca or Grey whales,
but this is very dangerous and life risking. We use whale for life resources such as food and clothing.
Food here on the coast is very easy to get (except for whales of course). Shellfish, which is easily found in
the sand of the ocean, make a very easy and delicious meal. Sometime when I’m walking on the beach, I
see piles and piles of shellfish shells along the ocean shore from people sitting and enjoying the delicious
fish the ocean has to offer.
Unlike other tribes, we have a lot of free time. The other groups out of our tribe have to spend a lot
of their time hunting bison and other animals for food. We have time to create many treasures because
food in my area is easy to get. My Mom and I once made jewelry from the shells out of shellfish and gave
them as gifts for ceremonies and special events. The women of the family made the family’s clothes. My
mother and I made the family’s clothes from softened cedar bark, which can be easily split down the
middle, and sometimes animal hides we traded throughout the area in other tribes. Once in a while, the
men of the tribe will go out and hunt sea otters to make blankets and clothing. The sea otter fur is very
useful in our tribe because it has enough natural oils and is tight enough to become waterproof for
freezing waters and useful as a coat to keep warm during the Winter.
When food was good and everyone was happy, the men of the family would cut down trees to make
totem poles. They are so beautiful with different colors and designs. My father and brother made one last
year, and it sits right outside our long house. It has many different animals on it and each one represents
a different aspect of life. Other than wood carvings, our tribe is very skilled at making beautiful baskets.
The women of the tribe usually made them. We sometimes traded the baskets or gave them as gifts.
The ceremonies were very exciting. People danced, sang songs, and enjoyed each other’s company.
We would also give away gifts in a sign of status. Sometimes during a ceremony, we would worship
“Father Mystery”. Me and the rest of my family believed that if we had done something wrong that the
Father disapproved of, He would send disease to our tribe. Diseases were very bad. People usually didn’t
survive them because we had no cure. But, if we did something good, the Father would send something
good such as beautiful weather or a good whaling season.
My tribe had many values. But in the long run, family and staying alive is most important.

Aztecs
The Aztecs came from Azatlan. Huizziloopochtli (their god of war) told them to leave Azatlan and travel
until they saw an eagle on a cactus eating a snake. They had traveled for years. When they had found it in
Lake Texaco. They settled down there and made an island, by building up mud until it reached the top.
They grew their floating gardens there Natural Recourses the Aztecs used trees to make boats, they used
plants to make medicines. They used mud to make the floating gardens. Dwellings and house potteries
Jobs Women would sew clothes. Sell jewelry at the market. Or stay home and take care of their children.
Men would work on the floating gardens (farmers), be warriors fishers, hunters, or priest. Weather?
Climate the Aztecs would have long springs, filled with rain. They had no winters. And very short falls.
Their summers were filled with drought, and famine. Mayan weather. The northern lowland of the Mayan
region is hot, and the rainy season, from February to May was the dry season by air that was hot and
uncomfortable. At this time of year, the fields had been cut and had to be burned with their slash and
burn form of agriculture. The skies filled with a smoky grit, making the air even more unbearable, until
the rains came in late May to clear the murky atmosphere. The rainy season is between May and
November, with rainfall in June and October. The Aztec/Mexican were not native of Central Mexico but
migrated from north, from a mythical land called Aztlan. Historically, they were the last of many Nahuatl
speaking tribes, generally called Chichimeca, who moved towards south from what is now Northern
Mexico or the Southwest of the United States due to a period of great drought. After almost two centuries
of migration, at around A.D. 1250, the Mexican arrived in the Valley of Mexico, and established
themselves on the shore of Lake Texcoco.
Should exotic animals such as tiger
and primates be kept as pets?
By Emma Smith
They start out as sweet, huggable, soft balls of fur. You are almost like a parent, raising them into
adulthood, but they are not your average pet. They grow to be large, mean, and short tempered. They are
dangerous exotic animals and should not be kept as pets.
Many things could go wrong when owning one of these pets. Often times these animals carry diseases.
For example, primates can carry Herpes B, monkeypox, and rabies. A person could get very sick and
even die if they were to contract one of these diseases. Primates and other animals also become very
strong and unpredictable when they reach sexual maturity. This means that even the slightest upset could
make them lose it. Snakes can be dangerous as well. If an owner cannot care for their snake, or just
doesn't want it, they usually release it into the wild. This could cause absolute destruction of local
ecosystems because everything in the area would be put out of balance. Overall, exotic animals can do
much harm to the environment and the public.
Repeatedly we overlook the fact that humans can harm exotic pets as well. For example, these wild
animals are taken from their mothers so close to birth. This causes them to not know or understand some
of the information that they need to know. These pieces of knowledge could simply include basic survival
skills and socialization. Taking any animal away from their mothers causes them to feel lonely and
isolated. This is highly common with primates in the trade. As well as being lonely, the average pet owner
would not be able to properly care for them. This could mean they would be malnourished, enclosed in a
too small of a cage, not seen by a veterinarian, or lacking other basic needs. Many times, exotic animals
will show symptoms of neglect. In the end we could harm them just as easily as they could harm us.
As they grow up, tigers, bears, primates, and other animals classified as “dangerous exotic animals”
become very unstable and powerful. These animals can escape and do much harm to the human
population. They are intelligent, strong, mighty, and tend to return to their predatory instincts. Many animal
escapes and attacks have occurred. Some of these would include:
 December 25, 2007- Four year old Siberian tiger (Tatiana) escaped her open-air habitat and
stalked and attacked three young men visiting the San Francisco Zoo, where she was located. One
of the attacked passed away and the others left with serious injuries.
 Toronto- Two boys (4 and 6) were strangled to death in their sleep by a 100 pound African rock
python. The boys had been visiting a friend’s apartment and the friend’s father owned an exotic pet
store on the floor below where they were sleeping. The python was said to have somehow
escaped from its enclosure, slithered up through the building’s ventilation system, and fell through
the ceiling to where the young boys were sleeping.
 June 1, 2013- A lone tiger managed to escape from its zoo enclosure in an England Zoo. After
exiting its hold, the tiger entered and area of the wildlife setting that it should not have been able to
go into. It is not known how the Sumatran tiger was able to get into this pen, but tragically the feline
crossed paths with a woman (24) who was a staff member at the zoo. She was mauled on the spot
and died.
Although these escapes may be unlikely and not a worry to most people, they do happen. They do not
just happen at zoos either, but could also happen in a home or a place thought to be safe. Also not only
an adult, but a young child with their entire life ahead of them, could be attacked. Do you want that to be
you or a loved one?
Overall, attacks, diseases, neglect, and escapes can happen anywhere, so the best precaution
would be to not own dangerous exotic animals as pets and to be very careful and safe when you could be
near one. They can kill us and we can kill them, accident and fatalities can be caused by both sides of the
circle. Humans, would you really want to kidnap them from their freedom and their happiness? Would you
really want to possibly give up your life and your future, for an animal that none of your neighbors have?
Alex Deibold Bronze
By Jacob Frampton
Four years ago Alex Deibold was a waxer for the Olympic team, this Olympics in Sochi he got the
chance to represent the U.S.A in the snowboard cross. Alex came away with a bronze getting the U.S.A’s
only medal in the event. However his teammates Trevor Jacob and Nate Holland did not make it to the
finals or place in the event. On Monday, the fog was so thick that organizers of the biathlon and
snowboard cross events were forced to move the competition to Tuesday, this was great for Alex because
he strained his back on Sunday when doing test runs around the course.
When Alex Deibold was in the semi-finals fighting for a spot in the finals he made a photo finish. Alex
was in fourth place when coming down the final hill called “the gremlin” he surpassed the Italian
snowboarder in third at the finish by falling and wheeling his board
in front of the Italians. He was ecstatic to have carried his team
into the finals.
In the finals wearing green Deibold sat near the back for most of
the race, than another one of the rubbers (racers) made a wide
turn in a corner giving Alex a chance to pass. He shot through the
narrow gap between him and the other racer, then as approaching
the leaders Deibold held his position and gained the bronze. When
his teammates came to congratulate Alex as they tackled him in
the snow then hoisted him into the air in true winners fashion,
although the rest of the U.S team did not make it, they were able
to look past that and celebrate with Deibold.
White Wolf Aislinn Williamson
White Wolf, that is my name; given to me by my mother and clan, as children belong to the
clan that follows through on the mothers side. We are Chinook; we live by the mouth of the mouth of
the great river, we call it Columbia. And we control the land from the mouth of great Columbia all the
way to the Dales. We are the great Chinook; the name of the tribe as well as the misty sea breeze
that rolls off the ocean and seems to come from our village, Tchinouk.
I was nearing my eleventh birthday, thus nearing time to go out on my vision quest. The head
of our clan wanted to send me off on my quest when I was only eight years of age because I was
responsible and adult-like. I would have gone to but my tillicum needed me here for the time being. I
suppose I will be going out and fasting in a week or two to see if my spirit guardian will come to guide
me.
We were adding onto our longhouse; carving more log-poles, using a technique carvers of our
tribe have been using since the beginning called “relief”, and painting the walls with the pictures of my
people on the new Cedar planks. All of my mother’s clan live in one longhouse. Just as every other
clan of my tillicum. We had to rebuild the longhouse because my kinsman were getting crowded. My
father would be here too but he died on a whale hunt (which is the most dangerous hunt on the
saltchuck) when I was only three years old. So we extended the house and had room for a bigger
fireplace in the middle. It was a good thing we expanded, we have nearly seventy-five relatives in our
longhouse! Then again all clans live in the same longhouse and usually house fifty or more people.
I remember the smell of the Cedar and Fir; the cold refreshing smell that one can only get
when lying under one in the season of summer or climbing one and sitting in its branches while
staring out at what the Old Chief has given my people. All the Pine and other trees, and the bushes
ripe with berries, and the dew on the morning grass; everything smells fresh and clean. It’s almost as
if you can feel the spirits around you. From up in the trees you can see even the great mountains in
the distance, begging for you to chase after them. And if you turn your head to the west just in time
you can see the great sun spirit disappearing behind the saltchuck where the salt is in the air.
As I walk outside the shelter, the exact same feelings are in my mind. The other clans are up
too. And I see the dogs fighting over a bone they found out on a hunt. I whistled to the dogs and one
of them, Little Wolf, came running. A large dog for her age; she was only a year old. The Tyee did not
want this white pup so I raised her to help me hunt. I told her to chako and I gave her some dried
salmon my mother had made.
Salmon was a favorite of mine, but I could sacrifice some for my dog. I had learned from my
father when he was around how to ask for food; when he pierced the salmon it was his, but once he
gave it to mother it was hers and he couldn't have any unless she let him. I always heard him say
“please” which was a request to have some food.
I carried my flint knife on a leather strap that I tied to my deer-skin pants. The summer morning
was pleasurable to be in the forest; there was moisture in the air, but it wasn’t unbearable. My deerleather shirt wasn't as hot as it got in the afternoon. On top of my shirt I had my dentalium shell cover
that my father had given to me after he got it in a potlatch; he already had one. I was happy to add
two more shells after a pow-wow at the Dales with a Salish Klootchman Tenas named Shading Life.
She traded me two of the dentalium shells for a basket my mother had made for me to trade. I think
she desperately needed a basket if she traded two shells.
Little Wolf and I got down to the river where we found some of the hunters fishing with their
flint-tipped poles. I am learning to be a hunter so I try to watch whenever I can. We sat down by the
berry bushes and thanked the spirit of the bushes for the berries to feed my tillicum. I ate a handful of
berries and waited until some of the hunters were gone. then I grabbed my fishing spear and waited
by the river. Soon enough a salmon a swan right up alongside the bank; I stood there, silently. Then
in one quick movement I jabbed my spear into the fish and hauled it out of the chuck. I then thanked
the spirit of the fish and headed back home. I presented the fish to mother around noon and went
back out to the trees. I had completed my chore of bringing home some food, so now I get to go
practice until tonight's potlatch.
I loved to practice my hunting skills! That’s why I had my knife. Sometimes I will try throwing it
into a target I’ve set in my mind to see if I would hit it, but I mostly throw stones. Stone throwing really
does help my aim. Maybe someday I’ll be able to be the best hunter or warrior in the Chinook!
When it was reaching dusk, and the great light was disappearing behind the saltchuck, Little
Wolf and I started back.
The potlatch was held by another clan in Tchinouk and we were invited. I enjoyed holding
muckamucks or potlatches because it was a sign of how wealthy we are. We are one of the highest
held clans because we give away more than what we receive every time. The other family that is
holding the ceremony is on occasion of a wedding.
The round-head slaves (who were obviously different from the Flat-headed clan of the current
shaman) were serving food while everyone was dancing, enjoying the muckamuck. Even the
cheechako clan had showed up. At the end of it all I thanked the Old Chief as Little Wolf and I went to
sleep to wake up in the morning and enjoy my day all over again.
Chaka of the Yakama Tribe By Casey Beksisnki
I woke up early in the morning at dawn for a chance to have the delicious meal, rabbit. Hunting was a
skill that all men required. Ever since I was little I grew up playing hunting games with the rest of the boys in
my tribe. We played games that would allow us to get better at using are bows and arrows. We would practice
and try to catch small animals until I was around age 12 then the real hunts started to begin. The bigger game
hunts were known as the buffalo or maybe even deer. Are people of the Yakama had to travel a lot for food. We
would set up camps by the river during summer time where the berries grew and the salmons ran. During winter
the tribe would move back to the semi-arid, dry plains for the great buffalo and deer hunts.
The men would spend the day gathering food by hunting. Sometimes we would get food and other times
we wouldn’t. After we were to complete the hunt and have are meal we would then bring are prize to the
women of the tribe. The women in are tribes knew how to cook and make the food. Once the food was
transported to the women Eagle Claw are Shaman would bless the dead animal because we believe that all
living things have spirits. Are culture had intricate weaving and beadwork. Headdresses made of feathers, often
decorated with eagle feathers. We never had much time to make beautiful outfits like the Coastal tribes this is
because we spent most of our time hunting for food. We would just pack our teepees up and head of to another
area. Are houses were easy to take down and move.
As I continued to travel on my journey for a rabbit I looked up the road and saw a flash in the sky! I
slowly followed it knowing that it could be a threat. As I came over the hill I noticed that in the sky there was a
magical eagle! I followed him; eagles were magical powerful beings that could heal. Are people worshiped the
eagle as a truly amazing being! The eagle had taken off and as I looked to the left I saw another man but this
man was not from my tribe.
This man looked similar too me but had a fancy well-made basket in his left arm and a spear that was
made of bone and wood. His name was Puma. Puma was from the Coastal tribe of Seattle. He had fish in his
basket and wanted to trade. I had no idea how he came here but I was furious! No one came to this land, these
animals were are food and only for us. I threatened to shoot him and he took off running back to where he came
from.
I continued my hunt it was almost noon and I happened to see one rabbit munching on his food. I raised
my bow pulled an arrow out of my quiver aimed and released my arrow. The arrow missed by only about an
inch! I quickly drew for another arrow but when I had looked up the rabbit was gone. He had vanished into thin
air. All of the sudden I see a coyote merge out from behind a small bush. This was a big deal if I could shoot a
coyote that would feed much more than just a rabbit however the best part was in the coyotes mouth was a
rabbit my rabbit.
I raised my bow took a deep breath and released! The arrow flew with great velocity and pierced the
coyote right in the neck! He took off running still with the rabbit in his mouth. I ran after him as fast as I could,
pulling my stone tomahawk out. I noticed that the coyote had stopped running so I leaped over him and made
sure he was dead. I had put the medium sized rabbit in my bag and picked the coyote up then started my way
home after a long day of hunting.
As I returned home I was treated wonderful because of my successful hunt! I went to feed my
Appaloosa horse and got ready for the ritual. After the animals were thanked by Eagle Claw our shaman I
waited to eat the delicious rabbit. That night after the women of the tribe prepared the food I was able to eat the
wonderful rabbit that I hunted that day! I hoped that maybe tomorrow I would have as much luck as I did today.

Cartel of Mexico
The cartel of Mexico, Joaquín Guzmán Loera born December 25, 1954, or April 4, 1957) they call him
El Chapo Capturing one of the world's most wanted criminal trafficking, murder, drug lords Wanted since 2001
Spouse(s) At least 4 Children At least 10 Guzmán was captured in 1993 in Guatemala, wanted to 20 years in
prison in Mexico for murder and drug trafficking After bribing prison guards, he was able to escape from a
federal maximum-security prison in 2001. He was wanted by the governments of Mexico and the United States
and by INTERPOL. The U.S. offered a US$5 million reward for information leading to his capture, and the
Mexican government offered a reward of 30 million pesos (approximately US$2 million) for information on
Guzman. He was arrested again by Mexican authorities in Mexico on February 22, 2014. He was found inside
his 4th floor condo at 608 Av del Mar in the beachfront Miramar condominium in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and he
was captured without a gunshot being fired.
Guzmán was born into a poor family in the community of La Tuna in Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Sources disagree on the date of his birth, with some stating he was born on December 25, 1954, while others
report he was born on April 4, 1957. His parents were Emilio Guzmán Bustillos and María Consuelo Loera
Pérez. His father was a cattle rancher, as were most in the area where Guzmán grew up. According to some ,
however, he may have possibly also been a gomero, a Sinaloan word for opium poppy farmer. Guzmán has two
younger sisters, Armada and Bernard a, and four younger brothers: Miguel Ángel, Aureliano, Arturo and
Emilio. He also had three unnamed older brothers who died of natural causes when he was very young not
many details of Guzmán's .as a child are known , Guzmán sold oranges to (barely) feed himself, and dropped
out of school in third grade to work with his father. Guzmán was regularly beaten by him, and sometimes fled to
his maternal grandmother's house to escape such treatment. However, when he was home, Guzmán stood up to
his father to protect his younger siblings from being beaten. It is possible that Guzmán suffered his father’s
anger for trying to stop him from beating them. His mother, was the one who emotional supported him. The
nearest school to his home was about 60 mi away, Guzmán was taught by traveling teachers during his early
years, just like the rest of his brothers.
The teachers stayed for a few months before moving to other areas.
With few opportunities for his hometown. During harvest season, Guzmán
and his brothers hiked the hills of Badiraguato to cut the bud of the poppy.
Once the plant was stacked in kilos, his father sold the harvest to other
suppliers in Culiacan and Guamúchil. He also sold marijuana at commercial
centers near the area while with Guzmán. His father spent most of the
money on liquor and women. Often returned home with no money. Guzmán,
at the age of 15, planted his own marijuana with his distant cousins Arturo,
Alfredo, Carlos, and Héctor, who lived nearby. With his first marijuana
productions, Guzmán singlehandedly supported his family financially. When
he was a teenager, but his father kicked him out of his house, and he went to
live with his grandfather. It was during his time that Guzmán earned the
nickname El Chapo, Mexican slang. Guzmán left his hometown wanting
greater opportunities through his uncle, Pedro Avilés Pérez, one of the
pioneers of Mexican drug trafficking, he left Badiraguato in his 20s and joined
organized crime.
