caring about quality,
service and value
Quality. Service. Value. They’re three
important requirements for any healthcare
provider. They’re also three qualities that
bpi.healthcare offers in abundance.
Quality
Innovation and value
To meet the sector’s need for exceptional
product reliability and traceability, we
operate strict QA controls and are fully
accredited under ISO 9001:2008, as
well as being the first UKAS accredited
manufacturer for refuse sacks and aprons.
Our environmental commitment has also
been recognised with ISO 14001:2004
accreditation, demonstrating our
effective environmental management
systems and our continued commitment
to improving our environmental
performance.
Finally, as we know that today’s
healthcare provider is faced with the
need for ever greater cost control, we
remain focused on delivering best value
solutions. We also continue to invest in
new production technology, new material
innovations and new service initiatives to
help reduce the direct and indirect costs
of using our products.
Service and support
We’re equally committed to exemplary
levels of service and support. Wherever
you are in the UK, as a bpi.healthcare
customer you’ll enjoy access to a
nationwide network of distributors and
a team of sales managers able to offer
you added insight, advice and a more
immediate response to your requests.

caring for the
environment
With growing awareness of environmental
issues has come a growing need for
greener healthcare solutions. Today’s
healthcare provider needs to be seen not
only as caring for patients, but also as
caring for the environment.
Reduce
Greater use of recycled material
As a leading manufacturer of polythene
products we recognise our responsibility
to operate with due concern for the
environment in which we live and work.
bpi.healthcare is at the forefront in
developing products that offer all of
polythene’s benefits – such as its
lightweight, high strength and impressive
versatility – but in a more sustainable way.
Through close contact with governments and
industry regulators we are at the forefront
of legislative developments. We continually
seek to improve our environmental
performance by setting objectives and
targets combined with clear management
programmes and initiatives to minimise our
impact on the environment. Here at bpi, we
progressively reduce the amount of waste
which goes to landfill by reducing the waste
arising from our manufacturing operations.
We are also able to offer a large number
of products made from recycled polythene
thanks to our unique relationship to bpi.
recycled products. Our sister division within
the bpi group is one of the largest recyclers
of waste polythene in Europe, recycling some
64,000 tonnes of material every year that
might otherwise have been sent to landfill.

Lower carbon footprint
It’s thanks to this uncompromising
environmental commitment that we have
developed many products that set new
standards in terms of sustainability. One of
the most notable is our Green Sack range –
some of the toughest, greenest refuse sacks
currently available with a carbon footprint
up to a third lower than most other 100%
recycled polythene refuse sacks. For this
very good environmental reason most of our
products are produced in the UK.

bpi.recycled products also believes in
recycling UK waste at UK facilities to create
products with a lower carbon footprint.
It ensures the green benefits of using a
recycled product aren’t offset by the high
product miles of it being made from waste
exported overseas, reprocessed and then
shipped back to the UK again.

safe management
of healthcare waste
Segregation of waste at the point of production
into suitable colour–coded packaging is vital to
good waste management.
Regulations
—— Infectious waste
Health and safety, carriage and waste
regulations require that waste is handled,
transported and disposed of in a safe and
effective manner. The following colour–
coded waste segregation guide represents
best practice and ensures, at minimum,
compliance with current regulations.
—— Amalgam waste
It is recommended that this national
colour–coded system be embraced with
immediate effect by new facilities or
organisations that produce healthcare
waste. Existing facilities and organisations
should seek to reorder the new colour–
coded supply of waste receptacles as they
replace depleted stocks.
The following waste types are included in
this segregation guide:
—— Clinical waste
—— Infectious radioactive waste
—— Non–infectious radioactive waste
—— Sharps contaminated with cytotoxic/
cytostatic products
—— Sharps contaminated with other
medicinal waste products
—— Infectious waste contaminated
with cytotoxic/cytostatic products
—— Infectious waste contaminated
with other medicinal products
13
—— Cytotoxic and cytostatic waste
—— Other medicinal waste
—— Offensive/hygiene waste
—— Domestic waste
—— Large equipment, for example
mattresses
—— Implanted/infectious medical devices
—— Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE)
This is a comprehensive breakdown of all
healthcare waste types. Waste producers
should choose the most appropriate waste
receptacle for the waste generated in a
particular area.
Colour–coding by waste
management option
The colour–coded segregation system
outlined in this chapter identifies and
segregates waste on the basis of waste
classification and suitability of treatment/
disposal options. The use of this colour–
coding system is not mandatory and is
not specified in regulations. Producers
may wish to adopt this system to aid
the identification and segregation of
their waste. By adopting the best
practice system, standardisation can
be achieved across the UK.
Reference is made to the minimum
standard of waste treatment/disposal.
However, waste may be sent to alternative
treatment/disposal methods which operate
to an equivalent or higher standard.
Any disposal facility should hold the
appropriate licence suitable for the
waste to be treated or disposed of.
Colour–coded segregation charts
The chart shown identifies the type of
packaging and packaging colour required
for each waste stream.
Carriage in bulk
Bags which have passed the bulk tests
should have the following text printed
on them:
“This bag has PASSED the tests for bulk
transport defined in 7.3.2.6.2(c) (RID/
ADR) and 4.3.2.4.2.3 (IMDG Code). Not
to be used for the transport of radioactive
material.”
Bags which have not passed the bulk
tests should have the following text
printed on them:
“This bag has NOT PASSED the tests
for bulk transport defined in 7.3.2.6.2(c)
(RID/ADR) and 4.3.2.4.2.3 (IMDG Code).
Not to be used for the transport of
radioactive material.”
Sack size tolerances
The VCA has issued updated guidance
regarding the UN approved sack
manufacturing tolerances. The sack
dimensions have to be within 2.5% of the
approved sack size and within +/- 10% of
the approved thickness.
The chart assumes that the packaging
meets the requirements of the Carriage
Regulations (UN compliant) where
appropriate.
Proper segregation of different types
of waste is critical to safe management
of healthcare waste and helps control
management costs. The use of colour
coded receptacles is key to good
segregation practice.

transportation
of specimens
The ADR Framework Directive was
implemented in Great Britain on 10 May
2004 when The Carriage of Dangerous
Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure
Equipment Regulations 2004 came into force.
Regulations
Category ‘A’
The domestic carriage regulations were
harmonised with the controls that applied
when dangerous goods, articles and
substances are carried internationally
by road.
The highest rated risk. e.g. Ebola virus,
Lassa virus, Rabies virus, Hepatitis B
cultures, etc. There is a defined list of
infectious substances included in this
category. They are very rarely found but,
when present, are assigned to UN2814
Infectious Substance Affecting Humans.
Packing Instruction 620 applies requiring
UN performance tested packaging to be
used for containment.
The general rule for packaging used
for containment of UN3373 Diagnostic
Specimens/Clinical Specimens requires
them to be of good quality and strong
enough to withstand the shocks and
loadings normally encountered during
transportation. Packaging shall be
constructed and closed to prevent any
loss of contents that might be caused by
vibration or by changes in temperature,
humidity or pressure.
Packing Instruction 650 compliant primary
packaging shall be capable of meeting the
following criteria:
Category ‘B’
Packaging compliance
Infectious substances which do not meet
the criteria for inclusion in Category
‘A’. They shall be assigned to UN3373
Diagnostic Specimens or Clinical
Specimens and are subject to Packing
Instruction 650. This will be the case for
the analysis. Packing Instruction 650 does
not require packaging to meet full UN
performance test standard.
Specifically, compliance with Packing
Instruction 650 consists of three
components:
—— Absorbent receptacle(s) and the
secondary packaging, the absorbent
material shall be in quantity sufficient
to absorb the entire contents of primary
receptacle(s)
Whilst the rules to be followed for porting
diagnostic specimens internally within
NHS Trust sites are not revised by the
new regulations, significant changes were
introduced, related to the standard of
packaging to be used for containment of
diagnostic specimens, when transported
ON PUBLIC ROADS.
The previously used expression ‘Risk Group’
was replaced by new terminology to identify
infectious micro-organisms, namely:
27
—— A primary receptacle
—— A secondary packaging
—— An outer packaging
Primary receptacles containing the sample
to be laboratory analysed, shall be packed
in secondary packaging in such a way that
under normal conditions of carriage, they
cannot break, be punctured or leak their
contents into the secondary packaging.
—— Shall be leak proof and capable of
withstanding 0.95kPa
—— If multiple fragile primary receptacles
are placed in a single secondary
packaging, they shall be either
individually wrapped or separated
to prevent contact between them
Packaging Instruction 650 compliant
secondary packaging shall be leak proof.
Mini-grip bags are sufficient or products
which have been used for a number of
years without failure.
Secondary packaging shall be secured in
outer packaging with suitable cushioning
material. Outer packaging is subject to
satisfactory completion of drop test from
height of 1200mm and shall be marked on
an external surface with a diamond shape
sign displaying ‘UN3373’.

the ultimate in
bedding protection
The DRITECH 100 range has been
manufactured to withstand heavy use in
hospitals, nursing homes and residential
homes where the problems of bedwetting
and the risk of fire from accidents can arise.
Cost effective solutions
Ease of cleaning and handling
DRITECH 100 is flame retardant, and
products are designed to protect by
completely covering mattresses and pillows.
The DRITECH 100 range is extremely easy
to maintain. It does not stain or retain
odours – it can be wiped down in situ
using a damp cloth or sponge. The use
of detergents or disinfectants – no matter
how strong they are – does not affect the
properties of DRITECH 100. This ease of
cleaning and handling makes DRITECH 100
cost effective in any environment.
DRITECH 100 has been developed
specifically for this purpose and has unique
qualities that are not found in PVC bedding
protection products. One of the main
features enables DRITECH 100 to remain
soft and comfortable when in use. It even
gets softer under body heat, moulding to
the shape of the user and mattress
– actually providing extra comfort.
Products in the range are virtually
undetectable in use; they will not crack or
harden and split leading to user discomfort.
DRITECH 100 does not require the need for
plasticisers – whilst these assist in the soft
feel of the product they are prone to leach
out when in constant contact with urine,
perspiration and cleaning disinfectants – in
turn causing the product to harden and split
leading to user discomfort.
The DRITECH 100 range includes draw
sheets and pillow protectors, which are
secured with either a Velcro fastner or
a tuck-in flap.
DRITECH 100 is always soft and
comfortable, with the added benefit
that it prevents soiling, saving the cost
of replacement mattresses.
