November marks the end of the first Trimester (November 13) and represents completion of the first third of the school year! In the month of November, there are fourteen days of school before the Thanksgiving break and fifteen school days between Thanksgiving and the Winter Break. This time of the year can be very challenging for students with all the distractions of the holidays. Despite it all, we strive to keep our students focused on learning. Now more than ever, the partnership of school and home is crucial. Your assistance in providing a quiet place for homework and project completion is greatly appreciated. Your efforts in this regard will pay dividends in your children's academic learning and success. Please let us know if you have any questions and concerns that we can address together. We greatly appreciate your support in making sure your children are at school on time, every day. Attending school every day is essential; children cannot learn if they are not in class. Any school day missed is a day when your child cannot make progress towards the grade level standards. Make-up work is provided only for excusable absences and this does not replace the value and integrity of the classroom experience. Whenever possible, please schedule medical appointments for after-school hours. If this is not possible, please be sure to return your child to school after appointments. If your child does need to leave school before regular dismissal, putting a note in their Student Planner to notify their teacher is very helpful. This year’s Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction was held on November 3 and was another great event! The transformation of the multipurpose room by our team of TRSEF parent volunteers was amazing! We had terrific donations for our silent auction from local businesses and individuals. Both the pasta (prepared at the Coast Guard base!) and the homemade pumpkin pie (made by our 6th grade class) was delicious! This was a great evening of fun and entertainment. All proceeds help to fund our Art, Music, and Library programs which enable us to provide every grade with these valuable classes throughout the school year. In closing, I wish each of you a safe and peaceful holiday season and thank you for your continued support of our school. Respectfully, Noon Dismissal Dec. 21 - Jan. 1 Winter Break - No School Toni L. We will be discussing the 6th Grade Tamale Fundraiser. All are welcome to attend! Lost & Found The pile of unclaimed clothing is growing! Please check the clothes rack for clothes that may belong to your kids. Lost & Found items can be found in the hallway near the office. We’ll be donating any unclaimed clothes to Goodwill in a few weeks. Please remind your students to take care of their Library Books! Recently, some brand new books have been returned damaged or moldy. These books are on loan and any damage beyond repair will result in the parent/guardian either replacing the book or paying the cost for a new book. Thank you for your help with this matter! Happy Reading! Lori Frost Librarian Student Recognition Each month at Two Rock School we hold a school-wide assembly to recognize students for their personal growth and academic accomplishments. Students are presented with Citizenship Awards for being good school citizens and each teacher selects a student for the Student of the Month Award. Students are also awarded with “You Rock at Two Rock Cards” for doing the right thing for others without being asked. Awards recipients have their picture taken which are then displayed outside of the Main Office as a way of providing special meaning and tribute to those who have earned these valued awards. Finally, the students and their parents are invited to attend that month’s meeting of the School Board in order to be congratulated by the School Board Members. The last Awards Assemblies was held on Wednesday, November 4. Our next assembly will be Wednesday, December 2 at 12:45 p.m. in the multi purpose room. Everyone is invited to attend. Red Ribbon Week Celebration Thanks to our amazing TRSEF volunteers and the McDowell Drug Task Force, Two Rock School students participate in the Red Ribbon Week activities during the month of October. Jesse Carpenter decorated the school and handled out pins for the students to show their commitment to living lives free from substance abuse. On October 21, Mr. Dick Sharke from the McDowell Drug Task Force spoke to the 4th - 6th graders about the history of Red Ribbon Week and the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices. Mr. Sharke had strong praise for the appearance of our school and our highly-visible Red Ribbon displays. Based on these decorations, Two Rock earned the award for best decorations and was awarded the $1000 GRAND PRIZE! Woo-Hoo! Way to go Bobcats!!! V O LU M E 4 B O B C A T NE WS PAGE 3 Christmas Cheer Dear Students and Parents, It has been a tradition at Two Rock School to participate in the season of giving, and once again, we will work with Christmas Cheer. Christmas Cheer is a local organization that collects food and toys for needy families in Petaluma. If you’d like to participate, please send with your child canned or wrapped food or new unwrapped toys. Each class will collect the donations, and fifth grade will count the items and graph our progress. We will accept donations until Friday, December 18. Happy Holidays, and thank you for helping us spread the holiday cheer! REMINDER Your Student(s) Emergency Kit is due by December 18th! Preparing for Emergencies In the event of an emergency such as a flood or earthquake that requires that we keep your child safe at school over an extended period of time, we are asking that parents provide an emergency food packet for your child. This emergency packet will be kept in a class container that will be accessed at such a time that it is needed. Should we find that this emergency packet is not needed during the current school year, we will return it to your student at the end of the school year. Your student will receive a separate letter from me explaining the importance of this emergency packet, along with a suggested list of items to be included in the packet. We are asking that all emergency packets be brought to your student’s teacher before the winter break, that is before December 18. If you are unable to prepare an emergency packet for your student, please contact us in the school office and we will make arrangements for you. On Thursday, October 15, 2014, we held an Earthquake Evacuation Drill at school. This exercise was part of the statewide California Shakeout, a drill held each year in midOctober. All students and staff followed the Drop, Cover, and Hold-on procedures prior to being evacuated to the school playground. Each class has a designated space on the playground where attendance was taken by teachers. We also held an Intruder on Campus drill on November 4. After hearing the signal over the school intercom system, teachers locked all doors and closed all window openings. Students assembled in a quiet place in the classroom that prevented anyone from seeing them. All students remained in this position until given the “all clear” signal from the office. It was very comforting to find that all students took the drill very seriously and that our facilities are safe and secure. As you know, our greatest priority at Two Rock School is the safety of our students. We will continue to hold practice drills throughout the year in order to be prepared for emergencies. The 6th Grade students sold desserts (including pumpkin pie they made) and the 5th Grade students sold beverages to benefit their Outdoor Education funds. And last, but certainly not least, a big thank you to ALL who attended! We hope you had a great time while supporting TRSEF’s fundraising effort for the Art, Music and Music Program at Two Rock Hello, my name is Kelly Considine and I am the music teacher at Two Rock Elementary. Once a week, students come into my class and spend most of their time singing songs and learning basic music reading. All students get to participate in some instrumental music. Students are encouraged to sing solo performances for their classmates during music class. We have a big holiday concert where each class sings their own song and recites a poem. The 6th grade class performs a couple songs at their own promotion ceremony every year. This year, the fifth and sixth grade classes will perform selections from Schoolhouse Rock with choreography, singing and acting. 4th-6th grade students also have the opportunity to join band in the After School Enrichment Program. The students at Two Rock are creative and energetic and I really enjoy sharing music with them! Two Rock School’s Holiday Music Program will be on Friday, December 18th at 10:30 a.m. in the Multi. PUMPKINS Two Rock School’s garden had such a bountiful pumpkin harvest that each student took home a pumpkin! In addition, the 6th Grade Class used some of the pumpkins to bake pies for the Spaghetti Dinner & Auction. Those pies were so Yummy! Great job bakers!! Big thanks Mrs. Godoski & Mrs. Brogan for all their hard work in the garden.
