Dear Friend of White County,
Exciting things are happening in White County!
Wind turbines dot our landscape, our new
hospital offers increased accessibility to quality healthcare, leadership development has
become a focused priority, and a true commitment to arts and culture is emerging.
Passion. Commitment. Generosity. These
are the traits that make these initiatives
possible ~ the same traits shared by the
people and organizations you will see represented
in this year’s Annual Report.
In 2009, gifts to your White County Community Foundation made it possible for
over $100,000 in grants and scholarships to be awarded in our community. How
exciting! A community foundation exists solely for the benefit of the community, and everyone in the community can be a part of it. Every gift, large or small,
strengthens our community.
This fall, we welcomed Greg Kapp as the new President and CEO of The
Community Foundation Greater Lafayette, following the tragic death of Doug
Eberle. We look forward to working with Greg and are grateful for the support
we receive as an affiliate of CFGL.
We hope you enjoy learning a little more about our community in this report
and thank you for all you do to help strengthen White County through charitable
giving.

Supports Reading Junction
Reading opens doors to so many
exciting adventures, especially for young
children. Through the White County
Reading Junction program, many
preschool children are receiving ageappropriate books through the mail on a
monthly basis.
A $2500 grant from the Calvert Youth
Fund provides a 1:2 match for every
donation to the program. All donations
should be sent to White County United
Way.
In addition, Women Giving Together
Fund members elected to grant $1000 to
this valuable initiative.

Monticello-Union Township
Public Library Establishes
Second Endowment Fund
Ninety-two White County women
became donor members of WCCF’s
Women Giving Together Fund in 2009,
donating a total of $14,000 to the
fund. Half was placed into permanent
endowment and $7000 awarded as
grants into the community. Any woman
who cares about White County’s women
and families may become a WGT
member/donor simply by making an
annual commitment to the Fund.
Anyone who has visited the Monticello
Library in the past couple of years knows
that it is a busy place ~ helping patrons
The fund’s annual luncheon welcomed
140 guests who were inspired and
energized by keynote speaker Jo Ann
Gora, Ball State University president.
Former state senator Katie Wolf was
honored as WGT Woman of the Year,
and future BSU Entrepreneurship major
Heather Jacks was awarded a $500
scholarship from the WGT Fund, in
honor of Dr. Gora and in recognition of
White County’s designation as an Indiana
HomeTown Competitiveness community.
and visitors alike explore new horizons
every day…and not just in the book
stacks! It is becoming a community
center of arts and culture, offering an
ever-expanding repertoire of programs
to stimulate creative activity. In
2009, it established an Adult Services
Endowment Fund within WCCF,
complementing the Children’s Services
Fund it established in 2008.

2009 Lilly Endowment
Community Scholarships
Administered by your White County
Community Foundation, the Lilly
Endowment Community Scholarship
Program is designed to raise the level of
educational attainment in Indiana and
further leverage the ability of Indiana’s
community foundations to enhance the
quality of life of the state’s residents. Lilly
Endowment scholarships provide full tuition
and fees, plus a book stipend, for four years
at the public or private accredited Indiana
college or university of the recipient’s choice.
Breanna Jennings, 2009 Lilly
Endowment Community Scholar
from Twin Lakes
High School
A 4-year varsity swimmer
in high school, Breanna
is continuing to share
her talents with DePauw
University as she pursues
a major in Sports and
Exercise Science, on her
path to a career in cardiac rehabilitation.
Passionately committed to “giving back,”
Breanna is often found at the center of
any activity that benefits her school or
community.
Amber Mosher, 2009 Lilly
Endowment
Community Scholar
from North White
High School
A petite young woman
who decided that she
needed to get over her

things, Amber joined her
high school academic team and helped it win
second place in state competition. Equipped
with a ready smile and an eagerness to
explore new opportunities, Amber is
majoring in agriculture at Purdue, with a
focus in animal science.

Memorials and Tributes Last Forever
John Connelly
1944-2009
John Connelly began
his career as a teacher
and coach, first at Delphi
High School and then at
Frontier. He left education and spent 29 years
as a commodities broker on the Chicago
Mercantile Exchange, but his love for
education and young people never left
him.
In 2007, John and his wife, Kathie
named WCCF as beneficiary of an insurance policy, for the purpose of establishing the John and Kathie Connelly
Scholarship Fund to benefit a graduating
senior from Frontier High School who
has earned a varsity letter his/her senior
year, is deserving of financial assistance,
and who is likely to succeed in college.
They did the same for Delphi High School
through the Carroll County Community
Foundation.
John died quite unexpectedly in August. The first Connelly scholarship will
be awarded in 2010.
We thank John and Kathie for their
generosity and for the privilege of helping
them create a legacy that will touch lives
for years to come.
A. J. Wagner
1983-2006
A. J. Wagner spent his
first nine years of school at
Frontier and graduated from
North White High School.
An avid sports enthusiast, he
was particularly passionate
about baseball and softball. A loving and
caring person, A. J. cherished spending time
with his friends. A scholarship fund has been
established in A. J.’s memory; all contributions will help support a future scholarship
for a Frontier or North White graduating
senior who has participated in varsity sports
and is deserving of financial need.
Memorials and tributes are special ways to honor or memorialize a member of your family, a friend, a colleague,
or someone whose life has left a positive legacy. In lasting tribute to each of the individuals listed below, your
White County Community Foundation assures that these special gifts live on for the continual benefit of our community.

White County: Proud to Be a
HomeTown Competitiveness Community
®
White County was honored to be named one of nine pilot communities for Indiana’s
HomeTown Competitiveness® initiative, a community and economic development tool for rural communities.
The visionary program, developed in Nebraska, is built on four pillars:
Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Wealth Retention, and Youth.
WCCF chairs the Wealth Retention pillar.
HTC is about people development – focusing on one heart, one mind and one person at a time.
It’s about people who want to give back to and invest in their hometown community.
Leadership White County
Leadership White County is the first program to be
developed within White County HTC. It is designed
to develop both personal and community leadership
capacity, to increase involvement in government and
civic organizations, to influence positive change, and to
build a spirit of unity throughout White County.
