In 2014 the Lodge was fortunate enough to be able to maintain and, where possible, enhance resident
care, safety and comfort. We could not have done this without the outstanding support and incredible

The Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge
The Auxiliary continues to fund a portion
of the special rehabilitation program,
additional hours for recreation and
maintenance of the aquariums in all four
units. Through the revenues generated
by their successful Tea and other efforts,
the Lodge is able to purchase items that
improve the atmosphere of the Home, give
comfort and support and generally improve
our residents’ quality of life.

The LTC Foundation and Hillel Lodge are

I had the good fortune as a child to live next door
to Helen and Isaac Beiles (who in later life lived
next door to the old Lodge on Wurtemberg). In
the summer, I could hear the sounds of Shabbat
Kiddush coming from their home. I remember
their beautiful Friday night table and Shabbat
candles in their sparkling dining room.
Mrs. Beiles smiled a lot. She was always friendly.
I remember her bringing us food over the fence,
from her backyard to ours, when my mother was

in hospital. She wasn’t asked to bring food. She
just practised good deeds with the same ease as
breathing. It was part of her DNA. She canvassed

We are currently facing critical times in the life
of Hillel Lodge. Our Foundation continues to
work on strategies to grow, which bodes well for
the future. At the same time, our primary funder,
the government of Ontario, has cut approximately
$500,000 from our operating budget in the past
three years. The Ontario government altered their
formula for providing assistance and then added
further arbitrary downward adjustments, without
due consideration for its impact on all long-term
care homes. This has slowly put us in a financial
“choke hold.” Other long term care providers who
operate as we do are faced with the same problem.
We are collectively lobbying the government: but
so far to no avail.
You may have read a recent newspaper article
on how one Ontario Home borrowed trust funds
belonging to the residents, simply to meet payroll.
Many Homes are severely cutting back direct
care staff in order to make ends meet. We are not
interested in “borrowing” funds that belong to our
residents. This is illegal and definitely immoral.
We also believe that cutting registered staff and
personal support workers is a risky move. We are
at a time in history when the average new resident
has more cognitive and physical challenges than
ever. These people who we know as our loved
ones, require more skilled care and attention, not
less. Cutting back on care could only result in
a greater chance for catastrophic incidents that
will make Long Term Care facilities potentially
dangerous or at least difficult places in which to
live. At Hillel Lodge our entire mandate is to
honour our fathers and mothers with the highest
care and safety. This will never change.
We are doing everything we can to manage our
expenses while maintaining the highest standard
of care. Our Foundation is growing because
you are helping us grow. We absolutely need
your continued help. We also ask for your added
assistance as we try to bridge the current gap
created by the drop in provincial funding. We need
your help like never before.
We may someday be residents of Hillel Lodge.
Let’s ensure that, in future, we still have Hillel
Lodge. After all her dedication, Mrs. Beiles, along
with the other founders and tireless volunteers,
would want it that way. Please help us grow.
May we go from strength to strength.

Direct Service Award for 2014-2015 are Pinchas and
Barbara Pleet.

For thirty years, the residents of Hillel Lodge and their
families have enjoyed traditional Passover Seders
thanks to the Pleets. The story of how Pinchas came to
organize and lead the Seders and how Barbara came
to co-host with him is a lovely account of a mitzvah
based on devotion and respect.
Years ago, there was a very special tradition at Hillel
Lodge which allowed for members of the community
to attend the Lodge as guests for Pesach and other
holidays. At that time, the Lodge provided kosher for
Passover meals to some Ottawa families. The Seders
were a very important aspect of Lodge Life. Pinchas
attended Seders with his beloved parents, the late
Harry and Bertha Pleet.
In 1986, Executive Director, Stephen Schneiderman
asked Pinchas to lead the Seders. This request came
at a very emotional time as Pinchas’ father, Harry, had
just passed away. Pinchas took on this responsibility
with humility, as a tribute to his parents, and in
recognition of the respect he held for the residents,
many of whom he had known well and looked up to in
his childhood.
As Pinchas organized and performed the Seders over
the years, his motivation was and continues to be, to
ensure that there is a haimishe atmosphere and that
the Seders are as joyous and meaningful as they were
when the residents lived in their own homes. Pinchas
notes that “their joy is our pleasure, our reward.”

continued to perform the mitzvah of leading the
Seders as a tribute to his parents.
Barbara Pleet and their family have always understood
the importance of being at the Lodge for the Seders.
In recent years, Barbara has led the Seder together
with Pinchas. Barbara credits her husband with
appreciation for his sensitivity to the residents. He
assesses the situation each year to adapt the service to
the needs and wishes of the residents. For example,
sometimes more English passages of the Haggadah
are preferred, or he may rearrange the order of the
songs. Pinchas and Barbara solicit the views of the
residents, asking about their favourite memories,
foods and songs. Residents feel included in this more
personalized Seder. Barbara says: “True reward comes
from their satisfaction and joy.”
Reflecting on the contribution of the Pleets to the
Lodge, Stephen Schneiderman states “on Seder nights,
Pinchas and Barbara bring so much to the table, their
warmth, humanity, respect for the residents and the
tradition of Passover. They make everyone attending
feel welcome and included.”

Pinchas also is a dedicated Hillel Lodge minyan
volunteer, where he participates frequently,
particularly on those occasions when the Yizkor
memorial service is required. He leads Yizkor and
frequently also chants the Haftorah of the day.
On behalf of the residents and their families, Hillel
Lodge extends our appreciation to Pinchas and
Barbara Pleet for their years of loving dedication at
Passover and throughout the year and a Mazal Tov on
their receipt of the Thelma Steinman Direct Service
Award.
Only one year in the past thirty did Pinchas take a
break in the Hillel Lodge Seder and that was for a
very good reason. In 1990, when his mother, Bertha
Pleet, was a patient at Elisabeth Bruyere, he held the
very first Seder there. His mother naturally kvelled
over her son and his good deeds.

We have once again been challenged by all the Zadies of Hillel Lodge to do as
we did the last six years and bike for all our beautiful Bubbies in this year’s
Seventh Annual Biking for Bubbies event. This year’s Biking for Bubbies will
have a new route...a total of 60 kilometres starting and ending at Hillel Lodge
and following along the Ottawa River. As always, we are in need of bikers,
volunteers and corporate sponsors.
By joining us and biking or becoming a corporate sponsor, you are
paying it forward to the Bubbies (and Zadies) who have paved the way
for us in the past. As was the case last year, we are asking all individual
Bikers to commit to raising $2,000.00 for Hillel Lodge. Corporate

A Message from the Foundation
The last year has been an exciting one for the Hillel
Lodge Long Term Care (LTC) Foundation. First,
2014 was the first full year in which the Foundation
had a full time Director of Development; Jana
Rand’s contribution to the evolution of the LTC
Foundation has been huge. Second, in the latter
half of 2014 and early 2015, the Foundation
received two significant legacy gifts, one from the
estate of the late Inez Zelikovitz, the other from the
estate of the late Dr. Hyman Kaufman and his wife
the late Dr. Sylvia (Van Straten) Kaufman. These
gifts, together with monies received in previous
years, mean that for the first time the Foundation
is able to generate investment revenue in addition
to its regular fund raising activities to support the
operations of Hillel Lodge. And third in 2014,
the Foundation’s fund raising efforts – Biking for
Bubbies in particular – were very successful.
This year in which we are celebrating the Lodge’s
60th anniversary will be a busy one for the LTC
Foundation because it is undertaking a number
of initiatives to mark this milestone in addition
to its regular fundraising activities. The Lodge
membership campaign, which has just begun, is
focusing on multiples of 60. While any sum will
be gratefully accepted we are hoping current and
potential Lodge members will consider supporting
the Lodge in a way that acknowledges its 60 years.
For the first time the Foundation is organizing a
“membership week” to promote membership in the
Lodge. This 60th anniversary issue of Our Home
which you are enjoying features congratulatory
ads from a large number of Lodge suppliers and
supporters. And a special celebratory event is
being organized at the Lodge for mid-October
featuring food reminiscent of the 6 decades of the
Lodge’s history and similarly appropriate musical
entertainment.
Biking for Bubbies (B4B), the Foundation’s annual
fundraiser, will take place on September 20th, 2015.
The B4B committee is already working on the
event and hopes to attract more riders with a
60 kilometre ride for 60 years. The LTC Foundation

is embarking on a legacy giving campaign. A new
planned giving brochure was developed in 2014
outlining the various options available to donors.
The campaign will provide the opportunity to raise
the profile of Hillel Lodge as an attractive recipient
of legacy gifts. A legacy gift to to Hillel Lodge will
assist in maintaining the high quality of care for
which the Lodge is rightly renowned.
The LTC Foundation Board is comprised of eight
dedicated members –Jon Blakey, Russell Kronick,
Stan Levine, Seymour Mender, Adam Schacter,
Stacey Segal, Eric Weiner, and Norman Zagerman
(plus the Chair). I am indebted to all of them for
their energy and commitment to the work of the
LTC Foundation. Thank you also to Jana Rand for
spearheading our efforts. It is a pleasure to work
closely with Stephen Saslove, Chair of the Hillel
Lodge Board and Stephen Schneiderman, Hillel
Lodge’s Executive Director as we celebrate 60
years of care to the residents of Our Home.

Our Home for 60 Years!
2015 marks a very special year for Hillel Lodge with the
celebration of the 60th Anniversary. Since arriving at
the Lodge I have had the privilege of meeting some of
the founding families, current families and friends of the
Lodge. Together, we have discussed how we mark this
very special milestone.
The families that I have enjoyed getting to know have
allowed me to witness very personal expressions of
compassion and dedication to Honour thy father and
thy mother. In conversations you become aware of the
personal relationship the Lodge has with them. The
support they provide to assist the Lodge is fundamental
for the LTC Foundation. In order for Hillel Lodge to
maintain the high quality of programs and services that it
delivers daily to its residents, that support is fundamental.
These connections and conversations have allowed me a
more detailed understanding of what the Lodge means to
them personally as a family.
$60,000 for sixty years was the LTC Foundation goal.
We were delighted to have a major donor come forward
to allow us to reach that goal right at the launch of the
60th anniversary. With that generous donation we
are now able to match additional donor’s gifts through
membership and donations. Our intent is to raise each
and every donor’s sights and to celebrate the 60 years
and to help secure 60 more!
This Community deserves nothing less. To our
supporting organizations, the Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge,
the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation and the Jewish
Federation of Ottawa; to the Israeli Brunch Committee
and the hundreds of volunteers that make the Lodge their
“second” Home; to each donor who has chosen to buy a
leaf on the Tree of Life, open an endowment fund, leave
a bequest, or endorse the Lodge through membership or
honour someone through a tribute card, thank you!

Why should I include a bequest to a
charity in my will?
Making a bequest is a way to make a lasting
contribution to the Lodge that you are passionate
about and that will continue to make an impact
beyond your lifetime. It is the opportunity to
leave a gift that will make a difference to the
lives of those connected and to lives lived at Hillel
Lodge.
Can I leave a bequest to family and
friends as well as a charity?
Absolutely. In fact, we encourage people to
think about their families and friends first and
then consider leaving a bequest to Hillel Lodge.
Is there a minimum value to leave as a
bequest to a charity?
No. There is no minimum value and no bequest
is considered too small. Every dollar given will
help to support our mission.
Will I be able to specify how my
bequest will be used?
Yes. However, sometimes for long-term care,
the needs are very specific and are constantly
changing.
What effect will making a bequest have
on my life?
Financially, it will have no effect on the way
you live your life right now. However, many
charities like the Hillel Lodge LTC Foundation
have a recognition program and appreciate being
informed of your decision so that we can thank
you during your lifetime.
How do I include a bequest to a charity
in my Will?
Leaving a bequest to a charity is a simple thing
to do. Speak to your solicitor about including
a clause in your will with the details of your

Outstanding Service Award
The Hillel Lodge Outstanding Service Award recognizes the contributions made by a group that contributes to
the Lodge and the wellbeing of the residents. The recipient of the 2014-15 Outstanding Service Award goes to
a very generous service provider, MediSystem Pharmacy, whose approach and services significantly enhance
the daily life of our residents.
MediSystem Pharmacy’s mandate is to provide innovative pharmacy services for residents in long term care,
retirement communities, and organizations that deliver specialized care. Creating positive impacts on the
quality of life through personalized customer service is a core value of MediSystem. The relationship with
Hillel Lodge formally began in May 2014 when it acquired the previous pharmaceutical service provider,
retaining the previous staff. At that time, MediSystem President, Helen Huh, began her own relationship with
the Lodge, visiting and getting to know the staff, leadership and volunteers.
Ms. Huh says she immediately got to see how the respectful and positive working relationships had developed
between the Lodge and the pharmacy, and was pleased to continue this level of respect for the Lodge.
She observed that the staff and volunteers at the Lodge are very dedicated to the seniors who live there.
MediSystem felt it was a natural fit for the company to support the Lodge’s events and activities.
MediSystem has been instrumental in providing all the pharmaceutical needs at the Lodge. Every day of
the year, MediSystem provides medications and excellent service to the Lodge’s 121 residents. In addition,
MediSystem has donated flat screen televisions in all the Units as well as at the reception desk which serve as a
communication tool for providing announcements, activities, menus, and other useful information for residents,
visitors, volunteers and staff. According to Ms. Huh: “We are happy to support and help where we can.”
Acknowledging the importance of Biking for Bubbies to Hillel Lodge’s fundraising efforts, MediSystem not
only generously financially supported the 2014 event but also agreed to be the corporate title sponsor for the
next five years. Ms. Huh attended
the 2014 event where she was

families. She says: “I felt like I
belonged there”, and she hopes to
attend again this year.

The Lodge will hold its 60th annual general meeting on
Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Sixty years is but a blink of
an eye in the context of history. Yet in that brief time, the
Lodge has accomplished so much and has so much about
which to be proud.
At the writing of this report, I know that it is impossible to
encapsulate the contributions of all those who both came
before me and those with whom I have had the pleasure
of working over the last 30 years. At the risk of leaving
any individuals out, I would like to note that the Presidents
of the Board of Directors have taken their leadership role
to heart and through their efforts and example they have
helped make the organization and the Home what it is
today. That is, as Rabbi Bulka once stated “the jewel in
the crown of the Community’s achievement”. No one
person can do this alone and so if you asked the Presidents
they would tell you of their admiration for their Boards’
commitment to excellence and of the staff, volunteers and
Auxiliary’s dedication to making it happen.

Congratulations on your
60th Anniversary!
In 2014, the Lodge set the following objectives:
To establish a timetable for succession of departing senior
managers: The senior management staff at the Lodge have
worked together as a group for a combined total of over
150 years. They are all reaching an age when some people
consider retirement. As such, a plan is now in place to look
at a phased-in approach for departing staff whose departure
will be staggered over the next 5-6 years.
To successfully integrate a new payroll and scheduling
software program in order to better distribute information
to employees: The payroll system was put into place in
October 2014. The system while it experienced a few
growing pains will be able to give staff better information
regarding their pay and benefits.
To introduce an e-learning program in order to enhance
and support professional training and development: In
February 2014, the Lodge undertook an entire e-learning
system for staff to be able to attend inservices online from
a remote location. The e-learning system also enables the
organization to track staff’s attendance and certify that they
have the requisite training.
For those staff who do not have access to a computer, they
can access all e-learning via the Kaufman Training Centre

which was opened in the Home in October 2014. The
Training centre will have a formal dedication at the 60th
AGM.
To explore opportunities to better broadcast information
to Residents, Visitors, Staff and Volunteers through
electronic means: Thanks to the contribution of the Lodge’s
pharmacy, MediSystem, there are flat screen monitors on
every resident unit as well as the lobby that are able to
broadcast information related to activities, events, notices
and menus. This information is available to residents,
volunteers, visitors and staff.
To restructure the Bylaws of the Corporation to include
representation of the Family Council on the Board of
Directors: The Bylaws of the Corporation were revised
to include representation from the Family Council. The
Bylaws were presented and approved at the 59th Annual
General Meeting May 2014.
To enhance the coordination between the Board of
Directors/Long-Term Care Foundation, the Family Council
and the Auxiliary by having an annual event: In September
2014, a Board Retreat was held including all four groups
in order to ensure a more coordinated calendar of events
and activities and for all groups to work in concert for the
betterment of the Home.
To utilize technology in order to further enhance the
existing safety and security measures of the Home:
Security is a primary concern for the Home and the
Community and in late 2014, the camera system that
monitors the Home received a number of enhancements
with respect to additional cameras, improved lighting of
the exterior of the building and a new digital video recorder
better able to capture events. More enhancements and
changes are on the horizon for 2015.
Possibly the best way to summarize our 60th year comes
from a line in a Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two
Cities: “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times”.
Some of the best is described above. The worst is the
current operational shortfall that President Stephen Saslove
so eloquently describes in his report. What he doesn’t say
is that we will draw from our greatest resource, the people
who care about maintaining the Lodge as a going concern
and making it continue as a fine example of what people
can do, both individually and collectively.

You can support the Lodge both now and forever by
establishing an Endowment Fund in the Hillel Lodge
Long Term Care Foundation. Your fund can be set up
with a tax deductible contribution of $1000 or more
(payment plan available). The capital in your fund
will be invested in perpetuity and the annual interest
generated will support the priorities designated by you.
For example, your Fund could support:
• Priority Needs of the Lodge
• Direct Resident care – feeding program, kosher
food, new medical equipment
• Therapeutic services
• Recreational programs
• Staff education, training and/or technology
• Jewish Life enhancement –traditions and Holidays

memory or in honour of a loved one, or serve as a
living legacy of your own commitment to the mission
of Hillel Lodge.

event in your life and help ensure the future of Hillel
Lodge.
