holidays are almost upon us. As I write this the
weather is reminding me that winter is indeed
almost here and as I get older I do those “shiverin’
shoots” less and less. But I am still looking forward
to January 2015.
I am sorry that the last match of calendar year 2014 got rained out. Apologies
to those of you who showed up only to be turned around and sent home…dry
but safe. I was in northern Kaintuck at the time and if it is any consolation it
was raining there too. But when I got back from that two week road trip as
far as Virginia and back, I repacked in two days for a ride back in the same
direction to English Texas and the final Comin’At Cha SW Regional Match at
the Badlands Bar 3 Ranch. It was my first trip there and as I said repeatedly I
was just there “to see the elephant.” And a big one it was. T-Bone Dooley
does know how to put on an event. It was a bunch of parties punctuated with
opportunities to shoot some guns. A number of other Texicans were there as
well. Joe Darter captured a Winner’s Buckle for finishing 6th in the FortyNiner category and our Range Master, Nueces Slim, finished 10th in the Senior
category to also snag a Buckle. Other Texicans who competed include Dirty

Dog Dale, Sheriff Robert Love, Shooting Iron Miller and Wildcat Bob. I
think Whiskey Kid also picked up a Buckle for finishing 14th in Wrangler.
Check out the Badlands Bar 3 website, www.badlandsbar3.com, for
standings but make no mistake, the competition was absolutely world
class. Sidekick, from Alabama took first place Overall by shooting 10 stages
in an average of 16.11 seconds per stage. He did have a miss on one stage
which, I think, was the only stage for which he had a score over 20 seconds.
And he shot one stage in 8.8 seconds! The stage was rifle and pistol only
but, hey, it took me 23 seconds and then I missed the last pistol shot. Talk
about a tough match! Congratulations to you Texicans who done us proud.

Between trips I purchased more targets and other equipment for the club
from the Alamo Area Moderators as part of their process in closing down
that San Antonio club. Sheriff Robert Love provided the transportation of
the stuff from Devine to the Ranch. That action gives us an abundance of
targets for the range such that we can establish a unique inventory of
targets at each stage complete with spares to cover breakages during a
match. But that action was a sad one for me as I have been a member,
badge number 123, of the Moderators since 1999 and followed it through
two previous changes in venue. I hope that many of the members of the
Moderators and Rough Riders, who are not already Texican Rangers, will
decide to join us at the Stieler Ranch. If they decide to do so and the new
By-Laws are approved, they will not have to pay an initiation fee to join.

HOWDY, TEXICAN RANGERS
The Executive Committee has finished revising the
club By-Laws. I will be sending them out to everyone
by email in the very near future so you will have at
least 30 days to review them prior to voting on
whether to adopt them at the January match
shooters’ meeting. In summary the major changes
include:
 Expanding the defined limits of Family
Membership to include grandchildren and
removing the “same household” requirement.
 Revising the duties and responsibilities of all
the officers to include increasing the spending
approval limits for the President and
Treasurer.
 Revising the requirements for Territorial
Governor.
 Establishing a shooter fee for Juniors and
Buckaroos and eliminating the Initiation Fee.
 Establishing the exemption of active duty
military from match fees.
 Rescheduling the annual elections to be held
at Shindig in September and the new Officer’s
terms to begin in the following January. This
will allow a three month overlap between the
outgoing officers and the incoming officers to
ensure a smooth transition.
 Revising the terms of office for the Secretary,
Treasurer and Range Master so they are
staggered in a way that provides continuity
among those offices.
 Simplifying the election process to a “show of
hands” vote by the membership present at
Shindig.
 General reorganizing the format to improve
readability.
(continued from page 2)
Many of these changes serve to put into the rule book
some of the “practices” the club has adopted since
2011 without a formal written basis. Look for the
revised By-Laws to be coming to you in an email soon.
I have given a copy of our proposed 2015 Calendar to
the Ranch Owners for their review and, I hope,
acceptance. I have proposed to have our first
matches on January 10 and 11 with a workday on
January 6. Keep your eye on the website for updates
on that schedule. If the calendar is accepted by the
Ranch Owners, our first match will be on the weekend
that is the wrap-up of the SASS Convention in San
Antonio. That may provide us with an opportunity to
invite Conventioneers to stop by and shoot with us
before the Ball or on their way home on Sunday.
Speaking of events in San Antonio, there is a firearms
exhibit at the Alamo that you should check out. The
exhibit is running from October 15, 2014 through
April 15, 2015 and more information can be found on
their website:
www.thealamo.org/education/upcomingexhibits.html.
The exhibit focuses on Firearms of the Texas Frontier
– Flintlock to Cartridge (1836-1876). Texican Rangers
Jake Jones, Texas Sarge, Charlie Reynolds and I
attended the training at the Alamo in August and
September to assist in overseeing the exhibit. I have
not yet participated because of being out-of-pocket
pretty much since the exhibit started on the 15 th
which means I also missed the special invitation event
they held for the exhibit volunteers the evening
before it opened. But I am looking forward to getting
started now. I believe the exhibit is open M-W-F and
Saturdays. Hope to see you there sometime.

HOWDY, TEXICAN RANGERS
(continued from page 3)
We have already begun planning for Comancheria
Days 2015 which will mark the 20th Anniversary of our
traditional annual match. You may be approached to
help with planning or putting on the match and I
anticipate that many of you will step right up to help
as usual. It has been my experience that that is the
Texican Ranger way. I am looking forward to this
being a very special celebration.
I want to close by saying I hope y’all are fixin’ to
round up a great Thanksgiving Day and come back to
join us in January for the first match of 2015.
Texican Rangers, let’s ride!

MESSAGE FROM THE CD MATCH DIRECTOR
I hear we are in for a cold, wet winter this year.
We’re off to a good start with the recent cold snap
and moisture. We certainly need all the rain we can
get and a good cold winter will help keep the
mosquitos and bugs under control early next year.
This type of weather just makes me look forward to
the spring time. The calendar is filling up with a lot of
good shoots to choose from next year. I do hope you
are planning to attend Comancheria Days 2015. If
you made it last year, we definitely are looking
forward to having you come back for 2015. If you
didn’t make it for one reason or another, we’d love to
have you join us in 2015.
This next year we will be celebrating the 20th
anniversary of Comancheria Days and just think, you
can be a part of this very special event. Plans are well
underway and we promise it will be like no other
shoot you’ve been to before. We are going to relive
some of the history of this event and we’d like you to
be a part of it. We ask that you encourage others to
attend as well.
At the back of this newsletter you can find a
registration form. Watch the website
(www.texicanrangers.org) for all the most up to date
information on the event.

Firearms of the Texas Frontier
Flintlock to Cartridge (1836 - 1876)
In 1836, single-shot flintlock muskets, rifles, and pistols served as the primary firearms in the Battle of the
Alamo. But just forty years later in 1876, Texans carried Winchester repeating rifles and six-shot cartridge
revolvers as armament. "Firearms of the Texas Frontier" presents the fascinating story of the technological
evolution of the firearms industry. It is not bragging to say that Texas played a prominent role in the
emergence of the names Colt, Smith & Wesson, and Winchester as giants of the firearm industry.
Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to view firearms that helped settle the Texas frontier. Through
the generosity of collectors and contributing institutions, the Alamo staff has brought together historic
firearms and artifacts that are sure to please any fan of the West. For instance, have you ever seen an
authentic Volcanic or a genuine Patterson or Walker Colt? But one does not have to be an historian to
appreciate the skill and artistry of the nineteenth century firearms designers who created rifles and revolvers
so advanced that they are still being produced today.
In addition to the exhibit of the valuable authentic firearms inside the Alamo Shrine, the Alamo staff and
trained volunteers (such as Jake Jones, Texas Sarge and Charlie Reynolds) enable visitors to experience a
hands-on exhibit of modern replicas of many historic firearms. Located behind the Alamo Shrine, the manned
exhibit offers visitors the opportunity to discuss the history of the firearms as well as to see them up close. It
is an opportunity for families to learn Texas history in an interesting and entertaining way. The timing is such
that it will also afford SASS Conventioneers a unique and yet familiar experience at the Alamo!

Voluntary participation by guests may involve observing, handling, and firing various firearms of the type(s) used during the period
from 1836 through 1900. A guest may participate in handling and loading live ammunition into such firearms. During a match the
firearms are fired, using lead bullets, at steel targets. ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO ASSUME ALL RISK BY SIGNING THIS

range and that my firearms must be unloaded at all times unless I am on the firing line and under the supervision of a range officer. I
am aware of the potentially injurious noise level associated with the discharge of firearms and the possibility of being struck by
rebounding bullet particles. I will always wear eye protection both on and off the firing line, and insist that my guest(s) do likewise. I
understand that ear protection is also recommended. I grant TR the right to use photographs of me participating in TR events or at
