Open Hearts ~ Open Minds
Star of the Sea School in partnership with our community and within the Catholic
tradition provides students with an excellent foundation for lifelong learning and
the inspiration to take an active part in shaping a better world for all
From the Principal........
Dear Parents and Friends,
I hope all of our dads and other significant males in our children’s lives managed to
enjoy a wonderful father's day on Sunday and that you were made to feel special. I was
talking to a few of the children and they were telling me that they had the best Father’s
Day ever. When I asked why, they told me it was the best Father’s Day because they
went to the Royal Show with their dad. In the end it really is all about memories and
time spent with family, even if dad had to pay for the show bags!
The Dad's Breakfast morning last Friday, was a great success with over 170 fathers and
grandads and other ‘big boys ’enjoying each other's company. It was great to see the
kids having a great time on the oval and this year we finished the breakfast with a
blessing of dads. Bathed in beautiful sunshine it was a great way to finish up the week.
Thank you the Parents and Friends Committee for all of their hard work cooking
hundreds of eggs and rashes of bacon.
APRIM Announcement
I am very pleased to announce that Stella Foley has been appointed as Assistant
Principal Religious Identity and Mission at Star of the Sea school. Stella is an
experienced educator and comes to us with a wide range of experiences in the area of
religious leadership.
Stella’s substantive appointment is Director of Ignatian Spirituality at St Ignatius
College, she has been acting APRIM at Tenison Woods College Mount Gambier and is
currently Acting APRIM at St Raphael’s Parish School, Parkside. She is skilled in Liturgy
and music and was head of Music in the Junior School at St Ignatius. More importantly
Stella impressed us with her contemporary understanding of church and her
experiences connecting school families with parish. I look forward to introducing Stella
to you at our next whole school gathering. I am sure that you will make her feel most
welcome and supported as she takes on her new role at Star of the Sea in 2016.
In the meantime Kelly Manera will continue in her role as REC for the remainder of the
year. Due to the time commitment associated with the role of APRIM and her young
family commitments Kelly did not make an application for the position. However, we
are very fortunate that Kelly will be back at Star of the Sea next year in a teaching role.
How fortunate we are to have two wonderful religious leaders on staff next year.
Child Protection Week
This week is Child Protection Week 6th – 12th September. It is a time to raise awareness
that the safety and wellbeing of our children is very important and the job of protecting
children is everyone’s business. The link below contains information relating to
protective practices and behaviour guidelines for staff and volunteers working with
children and young people. This online brochure explains guidelines with which staff
and volunteers in schools must comply. It describes appropriate behaviours and also
behaviours which are not appropriate as staff and volunteers interact with children and
young people.
https://online.cesa.catholic.edu.au/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-26057
Once again I remind parents and grandparents that if you intend to be a regular
volunteer at the school, listening to reading, going on excursions, helping with
swimming lessons or working in the school garden etc, you must have a Police
Clearance and you must have undertaken a Volunteer Induction. We are currently
reviewing our procedures and processes so we can best manage our volunteer
database. Stay tuned for further news.
Class Placements 2016
In last week’s newsletter I notified families that the process of class placement will
begin in the weeks ahead. If you would like the school to consider the placement of
your child on educational grounds then I ask that you complete the proforma that can
be downloaded from the school’s website.
Each year we give parents an opportunity for input regarding the placement of
students for the following year. This exercise is about considering your child’s
educational needs. It is not an exercise in selecting your child’s teacher. It is my belief

that the class teacher is the person in the best position to make judgments about the educational needs of your child and
hopefully, all matters of concern about your child’s needs should have been expressed to the teacher early in the school
year. The school is consultative in this matter; however, the final decision rests with the class teachers. It is my
responsibility as Principal to support the judgment of teachers that I entrust with this responsibility.
It seems that each year there is increasing anxiety about this process but my experience indicates that once the year gets
underway, the students adjust to their new teacher and friends, and they get on with life in their new class.
If you believe there is some aspect of your child’s learning that requires further consideration, please put your issues in
writing on the Class Placement form you can download from the school’s website. www.star.catholic.edu.au Class
placement forms need to be submitted by Friday, 25th September.
A-thon Money
Once again thank you for the wonderful response to the Activity-a-thon Day celebrated several weeks ago. The A-thon is
this year’s major fundraising effort with the aim of purchasing new ovens for the Multi-Purpose Room kitchen, new
outdoor furniture, the mathematic staircase and the Nature Play area for the little ones. There are still several families
who have not yet returned their A-thon forms and money and we would hate for you not to be included in the raffle
draw at the end of the term. So far money counted to date is just over $14,000. A magnificent effort from everyone!
Adopt a Sea Creature
The Marine Discovery Centre has recently welcomed a number of new and interesting sea creatures from our local
waters. In last week’s newsletter there were pictures of some of the creatures that are just waiting to be adopted. If you
would like to have naming rights to one of the new sea stars, box fish or pencil sea urchins please contact Ursula in the
Marine Discovery Centre. Like pets at home the sea creatures in the MDC need to be fed and maintained and this costs
money. With every adopted creature comes free visiting rights, and you don’t have to pick up their poo! Your support
really does help.
Matt Perry is currently in New Zealand on a study tour of schools in Auckland. Matt has reported back that he is learning
a lot and has visited some excellent schools. I am sure Matt will have a great deal to share when he returns next Monday.
As for me this is my final newsletter for the term. I will be heading off overseas next week on long service leave with my
wife Anna. I look forward to seeing everyone next term. Please look after Matt and Kelly for me as they lead the school in
my absence. I know they will have your full support.
Enjoy the weekend ahead! Alas no football for some!

Mark 8:27-35
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah
Jesus and his disciples went on to the
villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the
way he asked them, “Who do people say I
am?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;
others say Elijah; and still others, one of the
prophets.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do
you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about
him.
He then began to teach them that the Son of
Man must suffer many things and be
rejected by the elders, the chief priests and
the teachers of the law, and that he must be
killed and after three days rise again. He
spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him
aside and began to rebuke him.
But when Jesus turned and looked at his
disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me,
Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind
the concerns of God, but merely human
concerns.”
Then he called the crowd to him along with
his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be
my disciple must deny themselves and take
up their cross and follow me. For whoever
wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but
whoever loses their life for me and for the
gospel will save it.
May we keep the following candidates in our prayers as
they celebrate their Sacrament of Confirmation this
evening Thursday 10th September at Our Lady of the
Sacred Heart Church.

Catholic Charities Month
September is Catholic Charities month and we are encouraged as
members of the Catholic community to support the many amazing
local agencies that help make a difference to
the lives of the vulnerable and disadvantaged
in our community. The Catholic Charities
Appeal support agencies such as the Hutt
Street Centre, Centacare, Mary Mackillop
Care SA, Catherine House, St Patricks’ Special
School, Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, Our Lady
of La Vang School and the SA Catholic Deaf
Community. To find out more about these
agencies or to make a personal pledge visit
www.adelaide.catholic.org.au. Our Church
also has envelopes if you wish to donate.
As a school, we will be showing our support
to help ensure these important works
continue to grow. On the last day of school,
we will hold an ‘odd sock day’ where
students can wear colourful socks of their
choice with their sports uniform for a gold coin donation.
APRIM APPOINTMENT
I am delighted at the new appointment of Stella Foley, who will be
our APRIM in 2016. As Joe has mentioned above, Stella comes to
Star of the Sea with a wealth of knowledge and skills and will
continue to lead us in the religious and spiritual dimension of our
school.
I am pleased that I have had the opportunity to work for a number
of years as the Religious Education Co-ordinator at Star of the Sea.
For personal reasons, I had decided not to apply because with such a young family, I feel that I
cannot fulfil the role in the way our school deserves. It will be exciting times ahead for the new
leadership team moving forward and I am excited about the new opportunities available to me
in 2016. I am thankful for the overwhelming support from the school, students, parish, families
and amazing staff that I have received over the years. We are a unique and blessed community
and I am grateful that I will continue to have Star as my beloved workplace.
