“His whole thing is simply to help the kids because
he believes in them and believes they have huge
potential,” says Taylor.
“He has been very impressed with their dedication
at training and has total belief they can pull it off
[at the world champs].He’s just an awesome guy.”
Since qualifying for the world champs, the family
has been attempting to raise the necessary funds
to travel and compete in Bangkok.
With time quickly running out to confirm their
spot on the NZ team, the young fighters still require
$5500 to reach their target of $12,000.

Child severely burned
in gas heater accident
A TE KUITI man wanted for breaching home
detention is on the run from police.
Early in June, Douglas Shane Wade removed his
home detention bracelet while living in Te Kuiti.
Police are appealing for public assistance to help
find the 30-year-old who was sentenced to home
detention on multiple charges including drug and
family violence offences.
He is described as 180cm tall of solid build.
A message was posted on the Waikato Police Facebook page on July 12 which reads: “Constable
Gary Anderson of the Te Kuiti Police needs you
to look out for Douglas Wade.
“Douglas has removed his home detention bracelet and has gone on the run. He has two warrants
for his arrest and the sooner we catch up with
him the better.”
Any information about Wade’s whereabouts can
be provided anonymously to Te Kuiti Police or via
Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

A TE KUITI child who suffered severe burns
to 35% of his body on Friday is still in a critical
condition at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital.
The five-year-old’s grand aunt, says the boy’s
clothing caught fire when he got too close to a
gas heater. Emergency services including St John
and volunteer fire brigade members were called
to the scene at 6.30pm.
Due to the severity of the boy’s face, neck and
arms burns he was transported by air ambulance
to Waikato Hospital and then to Auckland.
He underwent a five-hour skin graft operation
on Sunday and was scheduled for similar surgery
yesterday.

“At this stage he is still in a critical condition and
all we’ve been told is that he’ll be up there for at
least three months,” said his grand aunt yesterday
morning.
“While he is in hospital, his two sisters [aged 3 and
6] are staying with family in Te Kuiti.
“Hopefully tomorrow when he’s had all his operations I will take the girls up to be near their
brother, but they’ve been told that they won’t
get to see him because it’s not a great sight at the
moment.”
The boy is supported at Middlemore Hospital
by his father.

The 12-year-olds are currently preparing to
represent New Zealand at the 2016 Muay Thai
Youth World Championships in Bangkok from
August 27-September 2, having won their age and
weight divisions at the national championships in
Hamilton in March (Waitomo News, March 31).
As part of their rigorous training regime, the
talented trio have been staying in Auckland for
the past month to train at Tua’s Onehunga gym.
Their father Bevan Taylor says they met the
‘Tuaman’ three months ago while competing at
a YMCA boxing event in Hamilton.
After impressing the former heavyweight title
contender, Tua offered to help train the youngsters
because he saw “something special” in them.
“The kids remind me of me when I was young,”
he says.
“They’ve got that natural fighting spirit.
“They are very well mannered, disciplined, great

OTOROHANGA’S melting pot of cultural
diversity grew by 10 new citizens from three
countries last month.
Mayor Max Baxter welcomed the group at a
ceremony held in the council’s chambers on June
21, before they took the final step on their paths
to obtaining New Zealand citizenship.
The new citizens, including two families and
three individuals, are from Fiji, Germany and
South Africa.
Mr Baxter administered the oaths and affirmations of allegiance and conducted the official
swearing-in.
In true Kiwiana style, he presented them with a
potted kowhai tree and a book titled Choice – The
New Zealand Citizenship Story along with their
citizenship certificates.
“This was the most enjoyable citizenship ceremony I have witnessed since becoming involved
in local government,” says Mr Baxter.
“The most important aspect of a citizenship
ceremony is to create a welcoming environment
and atmosphere that is memorable.
“We wanted the 10 new citizens and their
guests to look back on the occasion as a special
day with fond memories.
“It is a privilege as mayor to be able to conduct
the ceremony here in our council chambers, in
our town and I wish them all the best in our
beautiful district.”
The ceremony ended with the National Anthem.
Otorohanga who make Otorohanga what it
is today. After living in Australia for 30 years
it is always great to come home. The town
always looks fantastic. Also to all those who
have helped our family in times of need.

THUMBS DOWN - I am fed up with
folk who walk their dogs and just keep right
walking when the dog poops. The resulting
trail of poop is unpleasant for those of
us following. It is particularly bad at the
moment in the Seddon, Queen and King
St West areas. I am sure the dogs don’t
like being dragged along when they would
rather stop. Not too hard to pick up after
them.

Soldiers’ stories to screen
REAL-LIFE footage of Lance Corporal Paul Gernhoefer’s six month deployment in Afghanistan
and its effect on his life is set to screen in Te Kuiti
on Friday.
While serving his country in the war-ravaged
nation as part of the New Zealand Defence Force
in 2012, Mr Gernhoefer from Te Kuiti, and other
soldiers were filmed to document their contribution and sacrifice.
Afghanistan: The Soldier’s Story was the idea of
Corporal Aaron Horrell, a patrol 2IC who was
on his second deployment to Afghanistan that
year, and had been given approval to record the
day-to-day life of New Zealand’s soldiers.
What resulted is a genuine insight into modern
day soldiers at war told through interviews from
those deployed including real-life footage of soldiers risking their lives on foreign soil.
Holding nothing back, the film features a candid
record of Mr Horrell’s six month tour during
which five of his comrades were killed and six
seriously wounded.
He says Mr Gernhoefer plays a major role in
bringing the documentary to life.
“The reason the documentary is coming to Te
Kuiti is because of Paul Gernhoefer,” he says.

the film and he simply tells the story how it was.
“What he talks about, I don’t think many people
even in his own township will know what he’s
seen and done.
“He did a lot of good things over there, he is well
respected by his comrades and in my mind he is

A HOODIE-WEARING burglar broke into Te
Kuiti’s BNZ Bank yesterday morning.
Police are currently reviewing video footage of the
person who forced entry into the Rora St bank
at 1.30am on Monday.
Believed to be alone inside the premises, Te Kuiti
Police Sergeant Craig Lindstrom says the suspect
was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap
and had something covering their face.

“And it just so happened that a number of serious incidents took place during our deployment
which made it all the more important to not just
tell the story, but to honour the soldiers who
paid the ultimate price and whose family’s lives
changed because of that.”
Mr Horrell says the documentary would not
have gone ahead if it wasn’t for the support of the
fallen soldiers’ families who strongly approved
its release.
“You hear the story from the soldiers and the
families to show the reality of war not just from
the frontline but from the home front as well,”
he says.
“The documentary has allowed closure for not
only those involved in this tour to Afghanistan,
but also the many others over a decade worth of
deployments.
“Lives have been lost and others changed forever,
but the importance of ensuring the New Zealand
public has a true account of what occurred in Afghanistan – from the mouths of those who served
– means their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
Afghanistan: The Soldier’s Story screens at the Les
Munro Centre at 6.30pm on Friday. Tickets are
available at the Te Kuiti i-SITE or at the door.
“We are also trying to establish the circumstances
surrounding the incident and the intention of the
person inside.”
Mr Lindstrom says the burglary is linked to a
similar incident at the Riverside the same night
also in the early hours of the morning.
He says entry to the Riverside Lane bar was
again forced and it is still unknown if anything
was taken.
“The two incidents are linked but we are still in
the early stages of enquiry,” he says.
“If anyone has any information in relation to
either of the incidents or saw anything suspicious
around the time the alarms sounded they are
urged to call Te Kuiti Police.”

key to TLC issues
KING Country electricity distributors The Lines
Company (TLC) is “not doing anything illegal nor
is it doing anything morally wrong.”
That’s according to Taranaki-King Country MP
Barbara Kuriger who says TLC has been scrutinised by the Commerce Commission, The Electricity Authority and is not in breach of any rules.
“TLC are doing everything right, nothing illegal
and the pricing model is hailed as the best in the
country,” says Mrs Kuriger.
She believes the company is acting responsibly as
a corporate citizen, and does not agree with talk
of the company putting profit over people unable
to afford TLC’s charges.
“They [TLC] have to keep the business side of
it flowing.”
As a community owned company she says TLC is
expected to make a profit and act as a responsible
corporate citizen, and in regard to its charging
regime she says legally and morally it is not doing
anything wrong.
“Everyone has a part to play in maintaining a
service and if you have an issue communicate it
to the company.”
TLC’s network length is 4500kms supplying more
than 24,000 customers throughout the King
Country region.
“The lines have to be maintained in order for TLC
to service its customer base, and someone has to
pay for it,” says Mrs Kruiger.
“If suddenly people had no power and it all started
breaking down or wasn’t maintained, we would
soon have power outages.
“People have a right to power.
“I would hate to see a situation where the cost of
it [the lines] became detrimental to the servicing
of them and we started to get power outages in
our more remote areas.
“We have to remember the coverage area of TLC
is huge and to maintain it would not be easy.”
Mrs Kuriger is due to meet with members of
the Waitomo Energy Service Customers Trust
(WESCT) and fellow MPs Louise Upston (Taupo)
and Ian McKelvie (Rangitikei) on August 4 to
discuss constituents’ concerns.

She says her office has only had three complaints
this year from constituents’ about TLC and “these
were resolved by the company.”
“I don’t see TLC as being an issue to the people
of the North King Country.”
She agrees with WESCT chairman Ivan Haines
that the company’s pricing methodology is a
“tough one to understand” and has applauded
the efforts of TLC chief executive Brent Norriss

TLC is holding me back’, and I am not seeing it
from that perspective.”
Mrs Kuriger says there is no silver bullet to fix
the issues people are having, and advocates that
communication works best.

Hats to go under the
hammer for brigades
A HAT blessed at Rome’s Vatican City is expected
to be keenly sought after at this year’s Waitomo
Caves Hat Auction.
To be held on Friday night, the second annual
hat auction organised by the Waitomo Caves
Fundraising Committee, has the ‘papal blessed’
hat as its star attraction.
While on a business trip in Italy, organiser Helen
Fortescue took her hand-knitted hat along to St
Peter’s Square and held it up while Pope Francis
held his daily blessings to the people.
“I know it’s a bit of a stretch to claim it’s been
officially blessed by the Pontiff but there is photographic evidence with the Pope and the hat in
the same photo,” she says.
Committee members have knitted 20 hats to go
under the hammer.
“This year’s range includes all sorts of designs
and colours from the traditional reggae beret to
an all-purpose ear warmer you can slide down
below the chin to keep your neck warm.
“But this one hat which has been blessed at the
Vatican is expected to fetch a high price.”
The beneficiaries of this year’s auction are the Te
Kuiti and Otorohanga volunteer fire brigades.
“Last year we expected to just raise about $50
from our auction but were pleasantly surprised by
more than $1000,” says Mrs Fortescue.
Te Kuiti Chief Fire Officer Phil New says all monies raised from the public are gratefully received
and go towards buying new equipment.

A most unusual catch
THERE is always a great yarn to be had
at the end of a day’s fishing but Aotea
man Ray Crake’s tops the lot.
Mr Crake is passionate about fishing
and hunting, and last weekend he was
able to combine both while out on the
local harbour with his five grandchildren.
Catching sight of a wild pig swimming
in the channel heading towards sea he
decided to take a closer look. He and his
grandson stuck the boar in the ribs and
hauled it onboard.
“It’s the first time I’ve fished out a pig.
Too right it’s a good yarn for the grandkids.”

Fun art challenge
in Oto township
WHILE the world is going ‘nuts’ over the Pokemon Go craze, Otorohanga is doing its own thing
with Post-it note art
Gallie Miles solicitor Stacey Heays says she became inspired to have a go at creating a Post-it
picture after seeing similar art at the Copy Centre
in Te Awamutu.
“There’s not a lot of opportunity in an office
environment to get creative and the Post-it notes
were about the most the most exciting thing to
come from our stationary cupboard, everything
else looked so bland,” says Mrs Heays.
“So, I decided let’s have some fun and see what
we can come up with.”
With her 16-year-old daughter Olivia, Mrs Heays
spent a Saturday morning putting their kiwi creation together using an estimated 480 Post-it notes.
After a photograph was posted on the company’s
Facebook page the idea has grown a life of its own
with other Otorohanga businesses also accepting
the Post-it challenge.
First to take up the challenge was Westpac Bank
staff who responded by jumping on the Pokemon
craze and 150 Post-it notes later their Pokeball
was created.

successful year ever.
She splits her time between her
family, her marae and her job and
is extremely driven by her passion to
help people into their
first home. Amongst
other things, she is
currently training
to run the Great
Wall of China
with a group
next year.

areas of my work from preparation

I’ve now found myself back in my
home town and it’s been amazing
to be close to family and friends
again. Cooking is my passion and
I enjoy creating innovative, healthy,
wholesome meals for locals,
travellers and tourists. It’s been really
rewarding to receive such awesome

Elected in 2014 as the MP for TaranakiKing Country, Barbara Kuriger was
brought up on a Taranaki dairy farm
and continued life in the industry when
she married her husband Louis and
raised their three children. Barbara has
always been passionate about the dairy
industry and has more than 30 years
experience in the agriculture sector in
a variety of roles as an industry leader,
director of vocational
training and a
strong advocate
for the business
and agriculture
sector in rural
New Zealand.
In 1987 Barbara
and Louis won
the Taranaki
Sharemilker of
the Year Award,
the first in a
plethora
of dairy
farming
awards. These included Kiwi Dairies
Farmer of the Year in 1997, and in
2012 Barbara won the Inaugural Dairy
Women of the Year award. She has
had a career of involvement within the
community and governance positions
relating to agribusiness including the
boards of DairyNZ, NZ Young Farmers,
and Primary ITO. In recognition of these
governance roles, she was recently
awarded a fellowship of the Institute
of Directors. Barbara is a strategic
thinker, enjoys a challenge, and
participates and guides others to fulfil
their aspirations. She is highly regarded
in the agricultural industry and is seeking
more opportunities to collaborate with
other industries to promote regional
growth. In Parliament she is the deputy
chair of the Health Select Committee,
as well as being a member of the
Primary Production Select Committee.
Barbara splits her time between her
electorate and Wellington, and is
extremely driven in her responsibilities as

Four year road
project starts
DESCRIBED as a vital link between the Waikato and Taranaki plans to
improve the 50km stretch of SH3 between Mt Messenger and Awakino
are underway.
But motorists are going to have to be patient.
Transport Minster Simon Bridges announced the $135 million project in
March, and even though there isn’t a digger in sight, work on the four-year
project has commenced says New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)
central region director Raewyn Bleakley.
“NZTA is currently working on the Awakino Gorge to Mt Messenger
programme. This is made up of three projects which include safety and
resilience improvements and the Awakino Tunnel Mt Messenger bypasses,”
says Mrs Bleakley.
“We are currently investigating engineering options and undertaking environmental assessments and geotechnical testing.”
NZTA will engage with local communities, landowners, iwi, district councils, road transport organisations and other key stakeholders to gain their
input on the Awakino Gorge to Mt Messenger Programme.
“The physical on-site construction activity will start with the safety and
resilience improvements next year and work on the bypasses – Awakino
Tunnel and Mt Messenger – will begin in 2018 with all completed by 2020,”
says Mrs Bleakly.

Arapuni Road Closed to Vehicular Traffic at
Arapuni Hydro Dam - 20 July 2016
Pursuant to the Tenth Schedule of the Local Government Act 1974, Arapuni
Road at the Hydro Dam headrace bridge will be closed to ordinary vehicular
traffic for a detailed inspection of the bridge and its supports to be
undertaken, as follows;
Road to be closed to ordinary vehicular traffic and date and time
of closure;
ARAPUNI Road at the site of the Arapuni Hydro Dam headrace bridge
between 9.00am and 3.00pm on 20 July 2016.
The following alternative routes are available for vehicles that would
otherwise use the closed road;
Crossing from east to west use Horahora Road north to State Highway 1,
then Maungatatauri Road, Plantation Road to Oreipunga Road.

Maungatatauri Road, to State Highway 1 south; then to Arapuni township
via Horahora Road and Arapuni Road.
Detours will be in place at the intersection of Aarpuni Road with Horahora
Road and Oreipunga Road respectively.
Note; HPMV users are advised to contact appropriate local authorities for an
alternative route during the period of closure.

Local caught in French terror
THE past week is one Christy Meads will remember for the rest of her life.
The 23-year-old daughter of Glynn and Jo
Meads of Te Kuiti, was celebrating Bastille Day
in the French Rivieria city of Nice when a truck
ploughed through the crowd killing at least 84
people and injuring many more.
On a Contiki tour around the Mediterranean,
Miss Meads was in a nightclub less than five
minutes’ walk from the scene of the deadly attack.
“It was just after 10pm when the fireworks display
on the Promenade des Anglais finished and we
decided to leave,” she says.
“It was a huge celebration with about 30,000
people at the fireworks so you can imagine the
chaos that ensued. It was terrifying.”
The truck drove for 100 metres at speed into the
crowd.
The group had been at the club for about 10 minutes, and were unaware of the terror unfolding
on the promenade, until security guards told the
band to stop playing and shouted ‘we are closed
we are closed’.
Miss Meads says she had no idea what was happening.
“But, we knew something was really wrong, people started pushing and shouting, freaking out.
“They shut the club’s roller doors straight away.
Jess [friend] and I grabbed each other and tried to
push our way to the front door which our group
was quite close to.”
After a short time, Miss Meads says their trip
manager got security to open a back door and
they fled.
“I just knew I had to run, we were thinking there
had been a bomb or shooting.
“Running back we were trying to hide near buildings. Our trip manager was amazing, at corners
she had a look first and then beckoned us to come.
“We would not have made it back to the hotel
without her, she kept us all safe.”
At the hotel the group found the glass entrances
covered with trollies for protection.
“We all huddled together in the entrance and
there were a lot of tears,” says Miss Meads.
“They then moved us up to the first floor and told
us to stay away from the windows.”
Once safe in the hotel she was able to call her
mum.
“I was so happy I got hold of Mum straight away,
it was so comforting to talk to her.”
